Rest in peace - Charlie Daniels (1936-2020)
I grew up at the dirt track in the middle of nowhere, WV. My father is race fan through and through, and when he saw an opportunity to stick me in a car, he didn't hesitate for a second.
We didn't miss a race weekend for something like 7 years. Eventually, it just got too expensive, and we couldn't keep up anymore, so we hung it up. My dad shared this song with me, all those years ago. Naturally, it was our dirt track song.
As I got a little older, I left for the military in the middle of January. The summer after I had left for boot camp, the Charlie Daniels Band decided to play at our local river festival (which never has any big name artists), and I was heartbroken that I wouldn't be there to see them.
I learned about Mr. Daniels passing a few hours ago. I never did get to make it to a show, and that's one of the biggest regrets I'll ever have. But, this song is going to live on forever in the heart of that little 6 year old, dirt-slinging kid. Checkered flags, Turbo Blue, and concession stand hot dogs.
Thank you to The Charlie Daniels Band, for giving me something to attach those memories to. And even though he'll never read this, Thanks to my Dad, my once and forever crew chief.

Amen...Here's to Charlie Daniels, whose music I grew up on and loved, good ole dirt tracks in the middle of nowhere in WV (Elkins Motor Speedway) on a Saturday night, and the horrible concession stand food we ate when we could afford it, and to the beer we would carry in in our coolers (which we sat on) before everything got way too PC.

Charlie Daniels is one of Tennessees most beloved men and he loved us as he wanted to be buried here rather than his home state NC. I met him many times because he was very involved with my university. I bought his book and he signed it and gave me some very inspirational words. he died a few months later... I didnt grow up with much but i did have Charlies music and i dont think id be the man i am today without it.

@@milkhauler081 watch junior Johnson's video here on youtube. Each moonshiner worked with what they had , some had better engines and some had the best engines. The caddillac V8* was popular in the old days IIRC, as it was the biggest c.i. wise. Having a switch to turn off the moonshiner car's taillights, and additional lighting for headlights were two more moonshiner tricks.
FWIW,/as most know, moonshining is how "hotrodding" /swapping the "Big Three"production engines began, then shortly after NASCAR began, and was ultimately responsible for the 60s and 70s muscle cars later on.

My Daddy went on to build Engines for Stock car racing, then IMSA, and SCCA racing as well as Drag cars and race boats, he worked for Paul Newman when I was a kid. there was lots of moonshine/ bootlegging round here in the late 40s, best one was a custom cutter hauling it down from KS to OK pumped in Combine tires claimed he made $5,000 and never moved a combine rained every day they was there, also guys would bring it down from NE into KS in jugs under truck loads of field corn
