As has been said in the comments, this is rooted in the A harmonic minor scale. The only difference between A harmonic minor and A minor (aka A natural minor as A minor is the relative minor to C major and shares the exact same notes) is that the 7 is sharped in the harmonic minor scale.
I'll try to write out the A harmonic minor scale for us CAGED folks in the E Form of A minor (AKA the G Form of C major, confusing, I know) using fret numbers and string names:
E: 4,5,7,8
B: 5,6
G: 4,5,7
D: 6,7
A: 5,7,8
E: 5,7,8
Here's the G Form of C major starting on the 5th fret so you can see that the only difference is that G gets replaced by G# in the harmonic minor scale:
E: 5,7,8
B: 5,6,8
G: 4,5,7
D: 5,7
A: 5,7,8
E: 5,7,8

Diminished chords are the upper part of Dominant chords.
Each diminished chord can be named from any note in the chord.
Widen any ONE of those intervals in the chord to a major 3rd, and now you have 4 possible dominant chords.
That one little diminished chord can be seen as at least 8 different chords, and they can resolve in many different directions.
(Take just one Dim. chord shape and see what happens when you lower just one note at a time. You will get 4 Dominant chords. Easy?)

Try this:
1: Think of the guitar as being tuned to an Em7 chord (EGBD) and at the same time an E minor pentatonic scale (EGABD).
2: Learn/explore/practice just about everything in that key of Em, and all this will be as easy as moving an E bar chord to different keys.
3: There are 5 CAGED shapes/pentatonic boxes. Think of EAD as having similar shapes (1-5-1-3), and GCF also related (1-3-5-1).
4: Start with the E-Em box, down at the 0-2 fret area and using open strings (repeat at 12th fret without open strings).
5: Begin to systematically naming every note in the 0-4 area that can be easily reached. Give them all letter names (C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb).
Now start giving interval names for each note in relation to the root/1. Start with the 3 roots in that E shape, now find the 4ths and 5ths, then the two 3rds and two 7ths, then the two 2nds/9ths, then the two 6ths, then the mighty b5, and you’re done.
6: So now that you can give every note 2 names, letter and interval, start playing licks you like and say things like “I like bending from b7 to 1” or “I can pull off from 5 to b5 to 4” or “I’ll play that chord’s tritone, the 3 and b7”.
7: Do that exact same thing for D-shape of E (frets 2 to 5), C-shape of E (frets 4-7), A-shape of E (frets 7-10) and finally G-shape of E (frets 9-12).
The 5-shape pattern (always in the same order, A always next after C, C next after the G in CAGED, G after A, etc)
repeats itself after the 12th fret.
8: The end goal is to be able to play in the keys of E-Em, all over the neck,
and always be able to IMMEDIATELY give any note a letter name and an interval name.
9: Start with minor pentatonic, add in b5 for the Blues scale, add in 2-6 for Mixolydian, add in 3 (always resolve b3 UP to 3 over a major or dominant chord), and now the “stragglers” like b2-#5/b6, major 7 (to be used as chromatic passing tones).
10: Every single note/interval can be played over any chord; it’s just that some can be sustained longer than others. In the end, “it’s all chromatic” meaning you can play anything over anything. Just start moving what you learned in E to the other keys.

It's probably in part due to him being an awful teacher. LMAO. Not trying to be a dick....dude is a great player but he's god awful at breaking stuff down. This is coming from someone who gets what he's saying. I think unless you have a pretty good handle on theory, most of this is going to be lost on you because he jumps around so much from one thing to another.

Awesome lesson as always Guthrie. I've been a huge fan of Cuban and Latin music all my life. As a child I would almost always pick out Santana from my moms wonderful album collection that consisted of everything from R&B and blues, bluegrass and rock to more eclectic music from all over the world.
Note: You may want to experiment with your mic placement for these videos. The last one was too loud in general and distorting the louder notes of your guitar. I hear you fixed that, but now it's not picking your voice up very well. I'm fairly certain this is just a mic placement issue though. From the presence of the sounds, it's likely the mic is directed at your speakers as opposed to you.
I understand why though, because directing the mic away from the speaker and towards your voice more would cause us to hear the string sound of the guitar before it hits the amp, resulting in a less appealing guitar sound, and as a guitarist/engineer myself, I completely understand. The fix then would be to use separate mics. It's more wok of course, and I am nit picking too. I personally don't mind this myself, but it would help with increasing your channels popularity, and I am interested in seeing your channel grow.
Edit: If you want to keep just using your iPhone, I think just try raising it up higher. I was typing this while listening and heard you say that just now. I'm pretty sure that if you simply used a taller box, it would raise the iPhone to a height that would pick up your voice better and be less drowned out by the speaker witch is closer to the same height as a normal sized box would be.
On a side note, I was just listening to Lightning Hopkins and wondered if you might talk about his style a bit sometime. If it strikes your fancy of course. I'm sure you have a lot more insight into his style than I do and many of us would learn a lot from that imo.

Harmonic and melodic minor. Yes, a raised 7th (G#) gives you the harmonic minor: voice-leading / resolving to the A. Melodic minor is unique in that it is different ascending vs. descending. Melodic minor has a raised 6th and 7th (F# and G#) ascending and is diatonic (according to the key... so G and F) when descending. Great stuff. Cheers! Nobody switches up the ascending and descending melodic minor anymore - it's a like a major in every way save for the b3. The raised 6 and 7 characterize the harmonic minor.

I love that Guthrie emphasizes the ear over scales. Although he doesn’t diminish scales ( see what I did there. Lol.). Guajira by Santana is a great progression for this kind of melodic feel. There is a diminished and also an Bm flat fifth I think.
I was just going to write that the Santana song most relevant to this lesson is not Oye Como Va, but Guajira! The whole song Am to E7 with the diminished substitution all over the place.

Awww, its all good. If you are in A minor, then play A minor chord and then the E7 chord. those two chords, back and forth. Playing he A harmonic minor scale over those two chords will give you a cuban sound. What I think Guthrie's focus is to pay close attention to the notes of any given chord you are playing, and LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN to what each chord sounds like. If you know where all of your chords are, then your solo will sound more natural. Scales are great and all, but chords and ears are the best. Cheers, guitar brother.
I totally agree with what Max just typed. You can also get a better grasp of using the diminished by thinking of it as a stepping stone between chords. Any note in the diminished chord can be resolved up one fret to either a Major or minor chord (same goes for scales of course). Imo this is the magic of the diminished.

Like the man says that was a Tito Puente composition. A great Timbale player and orchestra leader. Was lucky enough to have seen him live once with full orchestra in small venue. Santana is a great doorway to Cuban and Afro Cuban music. Some Latin cats will get offended if you compare them or even mention Santana. I had a few moments where I got funny looks as I naively mentioned that band. But to me it’s all good. Music is like food there is no accounting for taste. That’s why Guthrie is such a great musician first and a great guitarist second. Either way he is humbling.

This is referencing like we are in C major, not the relative minor we are actually playing in.

If you're playing F# over Am then you're playing Dorian minor- which would make the major key Gmajor- but if Am is the one- then you're playing Dorian. If on the other hand you're playing the F note- then it would be Cmajor- but really Aminor (Aeolian mode or Natural Minor mode they are also called) because the flat minor six in the scale is Aeolian- the major six note is characteristically Dorian. That's the only difference between Natural Minor and Dorian.
