  • Here's a little video on what notes to focus on when starting and ending phrases. I'm using pentatonic and then adding some scale notes.

I will say that doing these videos and having to break down what I’m doing is making me a better player also. Practicing and listening more and focusing. So we are all in this together!! Thanks again! GT

    Sweet...Really useful lesson because so many people go wrong here. And so many beginners ask where do i start? But not thinking about where to end. So you can continue on..or the song..Ends. Which is why it's called phrasing..like reading a book.
    Root 3rd and 5th of the chord are always good notes to emphasise and resolve to. People get so sick of me banging on about intervals, but that's what this is, knowing your intervals and which is which.Chords, scales, solos, rhythm...intervals. Not just the distance between two notes, but also the time between two notes...rhythm.

      You're welcome Guthrie,And thanks for taking the time to reply. There is an excellent guy on youtube and he says music is the sound of math..Brilliant..because it is if you think about it. We number "degrees" of the scale, we talk about roots/1sts..3rds..5ths etc,we add 7ths..etc. Formulas to create Major scales, minor scales, modes. We create scale patterns which are basically geometric shapes or patterns as are chords.We count from this note to that note..chord progressions..and so on.
      All of which creates intervals..it's all intervalic..scales, chords etc all made up of intervals. Intervals are the mechanics of music. How many people are stumped trying to understand the circle of 4ths and 5ths or modes? If you understand your intervals you already know most of it. In this video most of what you're saying is simply intervals and understanding how they work. Music theory is easier to learn because it's based on intervals.
      We all know that music theory is a bottomless pit, if you want to go deep into it. But for most a solid grounding in basic theory is all you really need. There's plenty of time to go deeper if you want later.
      Quite honestly i'd rather play the thing than spend god knows how long delving into the deepest recesses of all that theory. And in reality most players are pretty much using basic theory most of the time any way.

You've got a great teaching style, relaxed, nothings too fast or the steps aren't too big, each time I take a little something. I'll never be a great player, but it's making me a better player and it means I can enjoy playing so much more, I'm sure many others are getting this to, so again many thanks.

Ever since I discovered chord shapes, and then Papa introduced me to you, I've had Ah Ha moments, back to back. I've literally watched hundreds of videos, from dozen of online teachers. I like the improv explanations! You really help me to understand how you're trying to map out where you wanna go beforehand (but in an improvvy kinda way)..unlike many of the overproduced overvideo'd demonstrations, whereby the point of feel may be lost to oversimplification of "how to" gimmes on every angle of the dangle . Kinda reminds me of ole Danny Gatton instructional video approach, but don't get the big head! jk..lol You help to keep things on track mentally, so to speak (insert joke here)...but the mental is the most important part beyond the muscle memory! That's where other videos lose touch...Your videos are on point...Much kudos and future successes!

    Diggin' the Rap from Guthrie Trapp!! *lol* If I would have had Guthrie when I started learning to play guitar in 1973, I'd probably suck a lot less!! Seriously though, it's like I finally discovered *"the big secret"* when I started listening to Guthrie. How can you argue with a guy that can play like that? Exactly, you can't!! Also, Guthrie's *'ArtistWorks.com'* course is highly recommended. I caught it on sale and paid literally pennies-on-the-dollar of what I would have paid a private instructor for lessons, and no other instructor would be at Guthrie's performance level, obviously.

    Great stuff! I've been playing for 40 years, and as much as I appreciate these videos, I hear a lot of people saying, people don't want to learn licks, they don't need to learn licks, they need to learn theory. But there are a million videos teaching Target notes, chord tones, what scales to use Etc. I have gotten so much mileage out of a good lick, applying it to whatever key I'm in, stringing licks together to make awesome solos. I wish the great players like you Guthrie would start to make videos where you show us some great licks that we can string together to create cool solos. Just look at the millions of views on RUclips videos that have titles like 100 great Rock riffs or Blues riffs or country riffs or licks. People can know all the theory in the world and still not create a great lick. Having an Arsenal full of awesome riffs is worth a million bucks. Think about it, children don't learn to speak by their parents explaining the theory behind grammar to them, they learn to speak by copying phrases, licks as it were. Are you hungry? It's time for bed. Do you want to play a game? These are "licks" that children copy and use in their own personal vocabulary. As time goes on they learn to string those licks together to create full sentences and stories. We have tons of RUclips videos on the ABCs (music Theory) but not enough on phrases (licks) that we can copy into our own vocabulary. I would love to see videos entitled 25 great country licks that you can use.

    @guthrie trapp thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge w/ us mere mortals. These lessons have been a huge help. What brand of medium picks are you using? You get a nice round tone.

    • @guthrietrappmusic
      @guthrietrappmusic  5 лет назад

      P_Lawls thanks a bunch man!! I use Fender style medium picks and I use the round shoulder edge of the pick. Not the normal pointy side. D’Addario makes good medium picks also. Just don’t want a sharp pressed edge.

    “ I got a little off the radar there. Mixed in a little blues.....I couldn’t help it.” Lol
    Again. Thanks so much for the free lesson. Loving this content. So much in there to digest and explore!
    So good. Concise. And directly to the point. Start and stop on the I-iii-Iv. Rest is accent and color. Free to explore, but come back to home base.

    do you work from the cages system? am in between learning that and individual arpeggios and scales. want to get better at improvising with chord tones that may be outside of the scale to add more flavour rather than just notes from the pentatonics! agh

    • @guthrietrappmusic
      @guthrietrappmusic  5 лет назад +1

      Yes! CAGED system BUT its all related. The chord is the foundation then the rest ..

    Once again, right on time. Great lesson!! I'm looking for some guidence on scale tones to link the chord tones other than pentatonics

    Thanks for all the great tips, this has been super helpful! Also, you may consider using a looper pedal to give folks the chords behind these leads. I know for me, that would help me hear the changes better and better wrap my brain around it! Thanks!

    Question: when targeting 1,3,5 - is that 1,3,5 of key or chord being played?

    • @loarzhapunkt
      @loarzhapunkt 4 года назад

      Chord fits best but sometmes the 3 is a Bit much tension like at the 5 chord

    Chris Stapleton must have taken a lesson from you. His solo on Tennessee Whiskey is a great example of what you’re teaching. This is also great to connect these ideas in each position to make them fluid. Great stuff man.

    Awesome job Guthrie! I found you a few months ago via Brett Pappa. I am an intermediate player trying to get over a huge hump of getting all my scales/fretboard notes/pentatonic's and CAGED knowledge transform into musicality. Your teachings challenge me to practice and grow into a better guitarist. Thank you, TY, Thank You! Keep the videos coming, you got me hooked.

    Thanks Guthrie for another great video. Would love to come to Nashville and have a private lesson sometime. A quick question if you have time. You are floating between C scale and G scale (the 1 and the 5) Could you also use E scale since it is the 3rd?..or am I way off base? Thanks man!

      @guthrietrappmusic  5 лет назад +1

      David M thanks a bunch man! Anytime. I’d be happy to do a lesson here. The scale you use is determined by the chord being played underneath it. The chord is the tonal backdrop for everything. The 3 has no bearing on the scale. I can get this all straightened out for you! G
