Connecting Pentatonics To Chord Shapes - This Is A Must!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 мар 2024
- After an unbelievable few weeks of running hard and playing hard all over the place, I thought it might be good to get grounded and back to the basics here for a few minutes.
This is a little insight to linking the framework of the chords and pentatonics. It’s all directly connected and when you can see it and hear it is when the light bulb moments will start coming in.
Have some fun with it and take some chances!
Thanks, always.

Don’t forget this guys.. the “CAGED system” is nothing new and it’s not going anywhere. It’s simply the chord inversions up the neck. Once you get those and the framework around them, it all comes together a LOT quicker. That foundation is everything!
This is all new for me thanks
Always like your info.
Anyone else want to quit their day job and just watch/learn from guys like this?!
That's the secret!
Yes
That’s what I did 😁
@@clayfinley Oh man that awesome!
Would start actually getting really good that way
9 am in Sydney and I know what I’m doing for the rest of the day
And 6 months!!
9.45 pm in Sydney and I know what I’m doing for the rest of the night
10.15am in Sydney .. I’m on it 🤣
This is the framework:
1 - The chord is the concrete slab foundation
2 - The arpeggio is the framework
3 - The pentatonic is the sheet rock
4 - The major scale is the wallpaper
5 - The improvising is the artwork
When I stray off into the wilderness of mindless noodling, it's always good to return to the fundamentals. Thanks for being the anchor and keeping us on track.
I would give up much to go back in time and have someone teach me this when I was 14. At 60, it almost feels like learning a different but very important language. Thanks for the generous lesson!
Ditto!! Damn!
I hear that!! !
“Make sense and say something” probably the single most important philosophy I’ve ever heard to help evolve into a palatable guitar player. You’re a GOAT Trapp. Preciate you sharing your knowledge.
I have been playing guitar for 60 yrs, self-taught, and I have learned more from you that connects the fretboard to my brain....anyway thanks ! 😊
Same. such a blessing
Best lessons in the business. These concepts seemed foreign 2 years ago, but now I play it (not quite like Guthrie), and it is so nice.
Thanks for showing me different ways to play the stuff I have been playing the same way forever. It only took 60yrs, but I finally thinking beyond that, lightbulbs going off everywhere!
Just sat down after work day to practice and boom. Thanks Brother 👊
Great help! THAT was my lightswitch video Thank you for your help!
This. This is how the guitar is played. I loved the architecture reference too. Thanks once again!
Over 13,000 views and 70 plus comments in less than 24 hours. Nicely done, Guthrie!
GT, that's one of the sweetest sounding Gibsons' I think I've ever heard, and I've heard a few. I reckon it has a lot to do with your technique, you're a rare talent.
Best regards from NZ ❤
Best fretboard basic lesson of connecting the scale notes to the chord I've come across , Thanks GT 😎👍
Hey GT! I think you finally broke through my thick skull on the hand positions!! Many thanks!!
Brilliant analogy at 15:12!! It's clear that this structure needs to be "built up" as it were. Really love the idea of framework. Thank you!! OH do I love that 335!! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!!
Right on, brother. I feel exactly the same way about New York. It's an amazing town.
AWESOME. Thanks
This really helps a TON whrn it comes to connecting the freatboard to my brain.Thank you, really.
Thank you GT.
Amazing!! Thank You for this video!
Thank You...❤
This was gold! Thank you brotha!
Thank you Guthrie good man good info
I have the same teaburst es335 from 1970. Love it. You’re doing it justice good sir!
Footage from NYC was great! I think you’ve gotten many more admirers there too.
You da man Guthrie!
Congratulations dude. Stoked for ya…
Thanks for the great lesson!
Great stuff!
Mr.Trapp always sounds so good!
GT THIS STUFF IS THE MEAT OF THE MEAL!!!! GREAT STUFF!!! THANKS FOR POSTING!!!
You're awesome GT!
30 years ago an old man told me it's all about the chords. I wish I had listened back then but I'm listening now.
Thanks GT
That clip from Bitter End is absolutely sick!!
Another great video Guthrie!
Nice!
Love this stuff. So helpful. Thank you.
I quit my day job and doing just that! Also never forget Guthrie Trapp playing at the 11th street bar in NYCity. last year. Great!!!!!!!!
Always a pleasure to watch and always inspirational brother Trapp! Thank you🤘🏻💙🎸
Thanks for providing me with a lightbulb moment!👏👏👏🎶🎶🎶
it was a great show at the Bitter End especially with Oz and man I Love your work with Shawn Camp, and also so much with Jimmy Stewart! Man bring those guys on up here to NYC man!! ❤
Awesome lesson! Thanks Guthrie!
Amazing. Thanks Guthrie for making this simple!
Hey Brother TRAPP!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Deciphering the C.A.G.E. and putting into application is difficult in the beginning. And then to combine that information with the harmonized scales, arpeggios, major pentatonic scales and techniques opens up a huge door to ELECTRIC LADY LAND !!!!! Again THANK FOR ALL YOU DO for the Guitar community!!!!! Take care,GOD BLESS and ROCK ON!!!!!!
Thanks GT, the perfect lesson today...keep em comming please.
Guthrie your lessons are a breath of fresh air. I used to spend so much time noodling around on scales and licks but now when I'm just messing around with your exercises my playing sounds so much more melodic. Keep it going man!
Always good advice. Thanks Guthrie...
Excellent! Enjoyed the lesson.
How many golden nuggets can you ft into a 20 minute video??
Guthrie: Hold my beer
Guthrie, you’re addicting man. I start every video being blown away by your intro and thinking I’ll never get this puzzle together, but somehow I know if I watch closely enough you’ll always pass me another few clues. I can’t thank you enough for your patience to do this, but please keep it coming. I need my fix.
best lesson EVER
Great breakdown, Guthrie! Thank you!
Update: So after watching this lesson, I picked up my guitar and having the Guthrie’s lesson fresh in my memory, I started doing his exercises. The lightbulb 💡 came on! Wow! Just knowing the connections of the 1,4 and 5 (G,C and D) and where those notes land along the scales was “ear” opening. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of this lesson. A sense of accomplishment for sure.
I'll just say one thing you play beautifully man gripped me that's for sure and that's just your help👍👍👍👍🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
I also love New York I can't wait to go back
Thanks for all you do Guthrie! You're an amazing player and a great dude. Respect 👍
Thanks, Guthrie. This is very helpful to me as a developing guitarist. I would love to see you play mandolin once in a while on the channel. Best, Allan (Vancouver, BC)
Hey Guthrie, I watched "The Song" episode on Tv with you performing with Billy Gibbons...What a treat. You guys and gal (drummer) were great. Also, looking forward to yours and Tom's record coming out on May 1st.
Guthrie! I’ve been watching your channel for a long time, and love what you put out. This particular segment open my eyes to something I never really thought about before, connecting the pentatonic scale shapes to the cord shapes. What an awesome insight! Thanks for everything you do man. Cheers, Leroy.
whoa - the Bitter End is one of the coolest places... I haven't been in years but psyched to hear you're coming back over the summer - definitely going to try to make a show ! I'm a fan (and student) of yours from up the Hudson River a bit from NYC... This lesson is super helpful, btw !
Excellent lesson. Beautiful playing..
Much thanks!
Good stuff!
Hello Guthrie, I 've been working on lead guitar thanks to you. I've always considered myself a rhythm guitarist but I need to get out of my comfort zone and learn something new. Thanks for the inspiration and the lessons.🎸🎸🎸
Hey GT! Love Your Stuff, Man! Looking forward to the release of the recording!! Take Care!!!
Whew ! Yup ! All day !❤🎸🎸Sunday in the books thanks GT 🎵✌️🎸
Loved the Bitter End show - looking forward to July!
Making practice exercises musical....Priceless!
Jesus; this is like seeing the light ....much thanks, I can see. Going off to practice it ......
Upstate New York born..lived in Manhattan for 3 years and played The Bitter End many times! It’s great that you bring such class and amazing musicality to that historic room and continue to share your passion for stressing the fundamentals of connecting the literal dots to open the fretboard. You are one of the greats!
Man, I knew you would have a good time in NY. I will try to make it in July.
Sweet sounding Ax
Wauw , you have to be in , to get out ............. Thats so true
🤠🙏
Love your videos GT!!! 🔥🔥🔥 has helped me out tremendously!! God bless you brother and keep at it!!
Glad to hear it!
You just totally blew my mind with the cord is the foundation , Arpeggio is the framework, pentatonic is the sheet rock, the major scale is the wallpaper, and improvising is the artwork/furniture! I’m gonna print that out and laminate it and put it in my practice area!
Thanks, Guthrie!
thats guthrie taggart sonnnn.....sombitch can play at guitar
👍🏻
I just love watching you play Molly. True feel. Epic guitar faces too 😜
Always great stuff! Definitely a good thing when I get the “Guthrie Trapp has posted a new video!
For those of yall keeping up with my journey. My wife started the second stage of chemo. It’s been given the nickname of the “red devil”. Shit is no joke. She is doing well but it’s def a struggle to watch. A bunch of yall have reached out to send positive thoughts and I appreciate it! My little six string adventures are definitely a get away!
Man, I hope your wife is doing better and makes a full recover. Amitofo!
@@dhh488 thank you : ) it’s a process for sure.
Thank you again Guthrie. As always, just a perfect lesson on fundamentals. I've been playing for 18 months now, and your fundamental lessons have helped me land my first spot as lead guitar in a band. My first experience being in a band. And I've learned so much from your videos over the past year. I can't thank you enough for your channel.
From Bend Oregon, I say thank you sincerely.
Good luck, such a steep learning curve but so much 😊😁🫠
Hello, this is my first time seeing you on the You Tube, man I was amazed at what I see and heard. You’re playing techniques are amazing like you are from the island. That’s exactly how we play most of our island music. I love how you make those melodies sounds. I am now listening to your style of playing chords. Thank you for sharing your guitar expertise, God bless you,
I'm from NY and the best way I ever heard it described was by Levon Helms in The last Walz where he said NYC is an adult portion. You go, get your ass kicked and then come back for more.
First you take Manhattan, then you take Berlin!
Would love to see you in Berlin sometime if you ever have a tour passing by 😊
Another fantastic insight into just how to see the fretboard. You’re the only one (youtuber) so far that has ever had a way of explaining what that “visualising” the fretboard actually means. I’m going to just take a step back first and check what way my fingers are landing as I go up the board. Never gave any thought to the way you do it by always falling roughly into the chord shape. Another eye-opener I can only benefit from, thanks! Don’t forget, come to Berlin! 😊😊
Thanks man! It really does come together quite nicely when you can see it all fall into place visually and sonically. We would love to come to Berlin. 👍🎶😎
you're my favorite. as far as the canyon is wide . I. Dig .because the way you look up and see if I'm still here.
It makes me show that you really give a f*** about me.Learning because believe it or not i'm picking up so much of your stuff and rhythms match
Loved ur last few vids , more my level lol, still dope to see u rip it up tho!!
I can see the D shape, but my brain doesn't "see" the other shapes as A, C, G, and E. I have to recognize the patterns in another way. Guthrie's understanding of the neck is incredible.
That intro almost made me cry. great playing
you are my favorite.
that is great foundation to know, thanks man
Yo cool profile pic
@@gretschbasher lol 😎😎
If anyone wants to play really good lead guitar this is def a must know.
Man, thanks for providing us all with the proverbial file for cutting the jail cell bars of pentatonic Folsom!
Been dropping your name a lot lately - talking about chord shapes.
When you demonstrated adding the 4 it sounded like the great Dickie Betts! RIP Mr. Betts
You should make a video explaining, to all of us who are completely without talent, how to just listen and enjoy. LOL
Thank you…. I’ll be doing this exercise for a week or two
Great stuff
If you can do this you can make music. Great lesson for all.
Great lesson Guthrie, what is up with the logo and rose on that headstock? Did they FALL out??
Very interesting. I have known a little about the caged system. I play chords out if it. I know about triads and play some out of the caged. Connecting them to the Pentatonic scale. In your demonstration. Im lost... I better check out your earlier lessons. Hopefully ill understand better. Does seem like it could really open things up for me. Thanks great interesting lesson.
Simplicity is the way to look and sound complicated to the layman listener. My thoughts at least. 😀
Great Job. How about a lesson on the mandolin. For us old guys. Intermediate
Happy to schedule one with you!
hello Guthrie, I recently discovered your videos and I love your musicality..; the content is always very very inspiring... thank you very much !!. I was wondering what year your Gibson Es 335 is from? the clean sound is fabulous!! because we don't often see (here in France), this kind of model with this floating bridge...🤔 I'm a fan of this guitar.. best wishes.. Philippe
