Met Albert several times. One of the most congenial persons on the planet. Never know his level of talent just talking. He has been great to me. A few licks. Good interview.
I bloody love Albert. Absolute legend. And, what is often overlooked, he has a beautiful voice too. I've been lucky enough to see him live and have chat with him.
Emmylou Harris contributed to the sleeve notes on Albert Lee’s album “Heartbreak Hill”, Emmylou wrote (something like) “When I get to the Gates Of Heaven and St. Peter asks me what I did on Earth, I will say with pride - if that’s allowed, that I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee!” Albert Lee is renowned for his guitar playing, but check out his cover of Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman”. Some years ago Albert was interviewed by Lee Anderton of Anderton’s Guitars. Lee asked Albert if he would play “Highwayman” - a favourite of his late father/father in law (?). Albert obliged - singing and playing the electric piano, delivering a fine solo performance. Made Mr. Anderton shed a tear. Thanks to Zac for this video on the great Albert Lee.
I just went over and pulled up "Luxury Liner" just to listen to Albert play. I'm a 53 year old novice and could only dream of having that much talent. Really enjoyed this, thank you Zac!!
Albert Lee changed my life when I saw him with Emmy Lou Harris at Red Rocks Amph. in 1975, on a full moon night. His outrageous solo on "Country Boy" went on and on, totally blowing my young rocker mind. His playing (and Emmy's singing) on "Too Far Gone" brought me to tears, and I became a classic country fan that night.
What a legend this man is, I went to see him a few months ago just before his birthday on a cold night in Wales. He played and sang absolutely flawlessly and came to the foyer to speak to everybody afterwards.
I got a ticket this past January or February to one of his shows in NY. He said his fingers were so cold that they felt like pins and needles so he switched to the piano for a bit. That man's voice with a piano is absolutely beautiful .....he did a few Rodney Crowell tunes. After the show the theatre had cake and his fans sang him happy birthday to him.😊 What a nice guy. Thanks Zac.
That's funny I usually hear the quote he's a national treasure but with Albert being one of the few Brits to have conquered the country genre he's now a world treasure.
Fantastic Zac . I've seen Albert many times live, never miss when he come back over to the UK to play, always a fantastic night and always comes out to meet his fans at the end of the night, a true gent !!! It's amazing think of all the greats he has played with . He did a show a few night before the O 2 at a local club , to a full house . Brilliant 🎸🎸
I agree with you he is a genuinely kind acting gentleman . I met him for a few minutes got his autograph on an early album by Heads Hands & Feet . He acted totally surprised that I had presented him with an album that he played on. I was amazed and delighted that he didn’t seem to have an ego issue. Nice experience meeting him. It’s hard to believe that was years ago. He’s a totally brilliant musician.✌🏻
Agreed. I have seen him several times at smaller venues down South. He came out to greet fans after the gigs and once I asked if I could shake his hand. He was genuinely flattered, and I felt unbelievably honoured.
Hi everybody this is picker S. Burchfield. My former sponsor was in a band with Albert Lee, Buddy Emmons and Don Everly called the Dead Cowboys. I met Albert and asked him about playing with the GREAT!!!! Buddy Emmons. He said working out real fine!!! Albert had a 2 space rack case with a Korg A-3 for signal processing, mainly Delay and Comp. to my ears. Also he had a full rack space Korg Tuner. His speaker cab was a folded horn Music Man 2-12 cab and 130 Head, and a pointy A. Lee M.M. gitar. Thanks Zac for the Buddy Emmons Bio Shout. GREAT MAN and BOOK!!!! MY fave Emmons cut and maybe his was and is Special Door by Jazz Great Pat Martino. Fast Bop through all 12 keys. Buddy Smokes It!!!
I was introduced to Albert Lee on Clapton's "Just One Night" album. That is still my favorite picking of his, and what I always compare his other playing by.
Great interview! I bought the first Heads Hands & Feet album and instantly became an Albert fan! Seeing his name on Jackson Browne's first and then Emmylou albums was always a big treat. I was delighted to meet him in '84 at NAMM Chicago. I still marvel at his playing..... How could one not?!?!?! LOL
I've seen Albert play live 3 times over the last 35 years and he's always incredible. The last time I went up to get a CD signed and I was completely lost for words!
Back in 1993 Albert did a guitar tutorial/clinic in my town organised by Lee Anderton. I had just come back from a holiday in Greece and during the tutorial I began to feel my insides going AWOL and I had to leave. I still worry he thought I was walking out- and needless to say, when I got home my gut settled down but for a while I was worried I might explode so I thought it best to scram! I hope he did not think I was unhappy with his tutorial. Andertons did another with Jerry Donahue which was also great and luckily I did not have to worry about my insides. The Academy of Contemporary Music evolved from these initiatives and John Jorgenson did a similar clinic that I attended. Great to hear Albert give his insight into that wonderful album that a housemate while I was at college bought in early 1977- so I have very long period of loving the music on this record.
Wonerful interview Zac, Great Player, Great Guy.....With Emmylou and the Hot Band, OMG!, Amazed and dazzled....Then with Hogan's Heroes, I was sat inthe front row, still amazed.....Actually got to shake his hand and thank him for all that he'd done...(Who me?, was so modest), got a signed DVD....God Bless Albert
Wow, wow, wow, wow!! Love his work. Such a gifted musician and wonderful gentleman! I just wish he hadn’t switched from a Tele to a Music Man Strat clone.
Didn’t Albert’s relationship with Music Man develop from his working with Ernie Ball’s son Sterling (a.k.a Biff)? I am sure Biff played bass on Albert’s instrumental album “Speechless”. Plus his Music Man Strat clone is a signature model and (apparently) the first guitar Albert ever played with a whammy bar.
The first time I ever saw Albert Lee play he was with Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder and he absolutely blew me away. I feel very fortunate to have seen him live so many times through the years. Thanks Albert!
8yrs on and one message I still have on my phone is the one from Albert tell me how sorry he was to hear my father had died. They’d played together briefly in the 60’s and he was always my father’s favourite guitar player.
I was very happy to see you had Albert Lee on! This made my day. How do you get to be so good and remain so humble? How I'd love to find myself in that position.
My dad also played on Luxury Liner. Piano, Glen D. Hardin. I met Albert as a teenager. He truly is a gentleman! Sweet man. He has the ultimate comedy recordings, as well! I had never really heard recordings of Dudley Moore & Peter Cook before him. Listening to James Burton and Albert at once is an amazing experience. I sure miss the days of the Hot Band, and beyond. Luckily for us, this music is timeless! ❤
I never thought to ask him about that album. We usually talk about cars. We live charmed lives bro. Cutting heads with Albert, and Jay Dee (who played steel on that intl submarine band record with Gram), Redd & Johnny on Dad's song King Of Kings... many of my dreams have come true. I've played Bob's guitar, he sent me a couple leftover parts for my collection, from the steel changer when he made that bender. I had no idea Albert was using Bob's guitar on Those tracks! This is another golden nugget of information brother! Thanks man! Forrest
Such a fantastic record!! Not just Albert on it...Skaggs...James Burton...Rodney Crowell...Emory Gordy Jr...Dolly and ton of other great players! Albert...fantastic player and one of my all time faves! Thanks for interview Zac!
awesome! i bumped into albert standing in line at the roxy hollywood at a richard thompson gig. cool cat, had a nice chat, he was just as jazzed as we were to be seeing richard!
Thank you so much albert lee and Zac. I have a tele signed by albert in Dortmund germany. What a great teledude he is and a wonderful person. All the best to you and him. Love and peace.
I love this album. I had recently purchased it about a year ago on a whim just trying to dig into Emmylou's discography after falling in love with her Wrecking Ball album (another fantastic album). I can't believe Luxury Liner isn't talked about more. Albert's playing on that album is incredible!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing your interview. I learned a lot of cool things, e.g. Albert using Bob Warford's Tele on the Luxury Liner album and the Gibson F-2 mandolin info.
I loved Albert Lee’s playing going back to the band Heads Hands and Feet. Saw him in Clearwater w the Everly Brothers on the comeback US tour in 1984. I got his autograph on the double album featuring the original version of Country Boy. He was a little surprised when I said hello and held out that HH&F album. He was very kind to sign it for me. He was a very sweet natured humble gentleman.
Hey zac, you probably are aware of this, but I let you know anyway. There was an English duo called Chas and Dave, Albert Lee played with Chas in the 70s. "Chas and Dave Christmas knees up 1982" was on British TV, it's now on RUclips. Albert Lee and some chap called Clapton are in it! A knees up is a party with music, booze and laughter. All the best!
Chas and Dave were great musicians too. Chas playing in the bands of both Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent as well as later with Albert in Heads Hands and Feet
Zac! My fiancee and I just saw Emmylou for the first time last night at the Wilbur Theater in Boston. It was great, she did a big run from Luxury liner which was a huge album for SHE and I early in our relationship, as it was one of only a few in my car during our first ever camping trips together. Annabelle, my fiancee, was the sole asian american holding up the fort for the dedicated country fans thereof, and we had a blast! AND, Albert Lee is my personal favorite guitarist, maybe tied with Scotty Moore, so man you couldn't have picked a better video to release for me specifically at this time. We ply country music together, and seeing Willie every year is what we call "Church." Seeing Emmylou was equivalent. Thanks for the good timing. Makes me think theres some order to the universe. Man I love country music. Here in Boston its far and few between, but if you ever wanna listen to a GREAT local radio show, look up "Dixie Bee Line" on WUMB's "weekend archive." Its my favorite radio show of all time, and sustains us northerners every Sat. night. It covers it all.
Great interview with the great man. Albert has been one of my guitar heroes ever since I heard Country Boy on the radio - maybe it was originally released as a single in the UK? I've been lucky to see him three times and each time was brilliant. Once was in a little club when I got to sit in the front row about 8ft from the stage. I was like a kid in a sweet shop. The previous night he'd been playing with The Everly Brothers at The Albert Hall!
Many many years ago I saw Albert Lee play two consecutive nights at the Tramshed in Woolwich in south east London. The first night everyone looked very smart in matching shirts and ties and the second night was jeans and t shirts. The first night was brilliant but the second was even better. It was like the first one was duty and the second was kicking back and having fun. And he also played piano and was amazing. Every bit as good as his guitar work. It was a magical experience and I have to say thank you to Albert for two of my favourite ever gigs.
Ahhh Albert. Thank you. One of my drummer buddies gave me a cassette of Heads Hands and Feet in the early 90's and I've been in awe of your riffage ever since.
I have a ticket to see Albert on Sunday June 9 at Melbourne Assembly Rooms in Derbyshire. The fact that I will be seeing Albert at my small local village venue is just magical...
Saw the Luxury Liner band many years ago. My friends and I were in shock after seeing them. 'could not believe how effing "hot" this band was, amazing! I remember it like it was yesterday, it is imprinted in my mind, forever, which I certainly don't mind.
Albert played my mum and dads music venue several times always a lovely guy I asked him one time to sign my Earl Scruggs and friends album he said sure but you got to listen to this first upon giving me his new cd ,my dad was also on the phone with Chas and Dave that day booking them for the pub when Albert realised he asked to speak to them he’d been in a band with I think Chaz hodges many years previously and hadn’t spoken to him in years my dad reunited them that day on sound check brilliant guy my dad as is Albert. X
Very recently watched on YT Albert Lee, James Burton, and Chet Atkins playing I Gotta Woman - all I can say is - WOW!! Absolutely superb - although the image could be a bit better.
First time I'm hearing that Albert and Jerry Reed got to jam a little bit !! What I wouldn't give to see a video of that !! I have been a fan of Albert's since he was part of The Hot Band. I guess that's where I first heard him. In all these years, I NEVER heard a single negative word about him. Would it not be cool if he spent a few weeks in Nashville making a country flavored CD/DVD with Duane Eddy, Richard Smith, and some of my other favorite Nashville pickers.
Bought my first Telecaster on the mid 70s because of Don Rich and Steve Cropper. Then I got a Jerry Lee Lewis double album called London Sessions with many high profile musicians on it. There was this guitar sound on several tracks that just grabbed me . Back in the good old days when we had albums with liner notes I was able to decipher that all of these songs had a guitar player named Albert Lee. I was hooked. Then Luxury Liner, Rodney Crowell, Dave Edmonds Repeat When Necessary (if not familiar find the youtube of Sweet Little Lisa ), Marc Benno Lost in Austin, etc, etc, etc. Did get to see him twice with Clapton and on the Everly Bros. Reunion Tour. Also check out the video of him playing with Val McCallum and Jack Shit. Thanks Zac!
I have been fortunate to see him play with Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. Find a video of him playing Country Boy, stunningly masterful. Safe travels.
I never noticed all the Country Music Guitar players but Roy Nichols, and then came the early 90s, my Dad and I seen Albert Lee for the first time on the Nashville Network hosted by Ralph Emery and he sang and played Luxury Liner, he was out of this world when he started to pick, wow. Then a few years later, I noticed a younger guy, Brent Mason, he was REALLY out of this world when some songs he had the chance to pick with a faster up beat songs off of Alan Jackson's albums and Brooks and Dunn, and even some of Keith Whitley's last few albums. Both Albert Lee and Brent Mason are the best. Albert Lee and my Dad both 80 years and both still play their guitars, my Dad plays more like Chet Atkins style.
Never gets a mention in the same breath as Mott The Hoople or the Pretenders but Albert is a Herefordshire boy who more often than not gets overlooked.Deserves far more recognition.
While on tour in Japan, Eric Clapton was asked “What is it like being the best guitarist in the world?” He replied “Don’t know, you better ask Albert Lee”
I appreciate the humour, and this isn't a criticism of you - but Clapton would never indulge in the kind of, 'best guitar player in the world,' nonsense that punters are so bloody fond of. It's utterly meaningless - particularly in the light of the all the brilliant guitar players that were souly studio men, and were rarely if ever credited on albums in the 50s/60s.
Apparently Hendrix was asked exactly the same question when he first came to this country, his reply was you had better ask Rory Gallagher. I think this was a common myth going around at the time, did Eric and Jimi actually say that? I very much doubt it, I believe Jimi new very little of Rory Gallagher.
Met Albert several times. One of the most congenial persons on the planet. Never know his level of talent just talking. He has been great to me. A few licks. Good interview.
What a great man Albert Lee so humble and remembers all the details. Thanks Zac !

16 minutes worth of gold! Thanks Zac!
I seen Albert play in Ontario in 2007!!! He is a guitar legend for sure!!!!!
What a treasure this man is. So humble always despite being such an important influence to so many. Thanks for the great interview, Zac!

Love seeing this pop up on my feed. Luxury Liner is an incredible work of art.
Albert Lee is a world treasure.
That's funny I usually hear the quote he's a national treasure but with Albert being one of the few Brits to have conquered the country genre he's now a world treasure.
Albert Lee was one of the luminaries on stage of the "Concert for George".. which was a wonderful video
I was lucky enough to be there in London at CFG!
Such a treat. This gets the Quality content award from RUclips. My old man cover band is about to learn C'est la Vie.
Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that album, and Albert!

Seeing Albert at Masters of The Telecaster this week. Full Moon Resort, just outside of Woodstock, NY. Thrilled!
I could listen to this all day.
Great, thanks for uploading this 😊
Thanks Zac! Albert is one of the greats. Also, thanks for asking the questions we really want to know the answers to.
I've seen Albert play live 3 times over the last 35 years and he's always incredible. The last time I went up to get a CD signed and I was completely lost for words!
HOLY SMOKES ! ! ! !! WHAT AM AMAZING GUEST ! ! ! !
A pleasure sir ! ! !!

I’ve met Albert a couple of times. He was kind and humble both times.
@@markmiwurdz2248 You are absolutely correct in all counts.
The first time I ever saw Albert Lee play he was with Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder and he absolutely blew me away. I feel very fortunate to have seen him live so many times through the years. Thanks Albert!
It may have been only a 15 minute interview but it was priceless! Great info and Albert is such a great guy. And now 80! Wow.
Lovely man. Last time I worked with him he apologised for being older and slower. If only I could play like an older Albert Lee!
Albert Lee is my idol. I strive to be more like him as a musician and in life. Great interview.☺☺☺
Really enjoyed this! I’ve always been a fan! I’d love to ask Albert about his time with Jerry Lee..
A trye legend what a wonderful gift !
Man, I enjoyed this so much. He's amazing!

I can't remember what I did last week & here's old Albert remembering what gear he used on "luxury liner". A total Brit Legend! Nice one Zac. 👍

I wonder if Albert still has the Les Paul custom that Slowhand gave him?
He does
What a treat to come across this!

Fantastic. Thank you Zac!
My pleasure!
I saw Albert Lee when he played with Eric Clapton.
Thank you zac
Albert is my absolute hero and a fantastic human being
Nice vid...and what a living legend Albert is...!!!
Never gets a mention in the same breath as Mott The Hoople or the Pretenders but Albert is a Herefordshire boy who more often than not gets overlooked.Deserves far more recognition.
What a treat! ❤
While on tour in Japan, Eric Clapton was asked “What is it like being the best guitarist in the world?” He replied “Don’t know, you better ask Albert Lee”
That says a lot about Albert Lee! What a statement from Eric!
It seems like every major guitar player says “I don’t know, ask ** insert other great guitarist here**”
I appreciate the humour, and this isn't a criticism of you - but Clapton would never indulge in the kind of, 'best guitar player in the world,' nonsense that punters are so bloody fond of. It's utterly meaningless - particularly in the light of the all the brilliant guitar players that were souly studio men, and were rarely if ever credited on albums in the 50s/60s.
That quote makes the rounds with various guitarists interchanged. Hendrix, Jimmy Page, etc.
I love Albert Lee!
Let's all take a minute to wish Emmylou a Happy 77th Birthday today.
My main amp these days is a MM RD 112. Love it!
While they have a definite following, they are still a bit under the radar.
A gentle soul. Very nice Zac ❤
Heard Albert sing "Tear Stained Letter" recently- it was sparkling!
One question: Did Albert lose 2 butcher block Tellys, or 1? I got confused....
He has 2 of them, so I guess so
Amazing Zac... always . Legend ❤Albert Lee 🙏
Thanks!!!!
