You know it. The other huge task I see I have yet to even begin to learn, is just musicianship. Players like Trapp, Pierce, and them, they are far more creative. Not complaining, just saying it is inspiring to see them do their thing.
The appeal to me of your videos is that they are unscripted, unedited and authentic. I'm a guitar player and guitar related info is why I'm here. Unless you learn to survive setting your hair on fire every week you will probably continue to attract musicians and not casual viewers. I'm glad you know your lane and you stay in it. Of all the RUclips music teachers I've watched (dozens over the years) you have been my biggest influence. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
THANK YOU, GT! Your explanation, and the fact you share all of this wonderful information with us is SO appreciated!! To all who struggle with this, just keep at it, your playing WILL go next level if you put just a little bit of time into this kind of study. Seriously, just 15 minutes of playing with purpose per day will have you understanding this stuff all over the fret board. The thing that helped me the most is learn all the shapes in one key first. (I started with C) Do that and nothing else until you can play that comfortably up and down the neck in all the shapes. Then add the fifth of that key and play those two keys in all of the shapes and nothing else. In just a couple of weeks you won't believe how much knowledge of the guitar you'll have. Outstanding stuff I wish I knew 30 years ago!! God bless you, GT and everyone embarking on this amazing journey!! 🤠👍
Brother I'd rather listen to you record on your iPhone then 97% of these other guys out there! You keep doing you cause at the end of the day you need to be able to close your eyes and open your ears for this stuff! I hope to see the trio tomorrow night my friend as I will be in town! Keep putting out those sweet sweet sound waves my friend!
I have tried to learn and understand CAGED for years. It was never explained to me more than just the C chord voicings up the neck. I have learned more from three of your videos than I have in years of lessons. Thank you!
My playing has grown exponentially since finding GT's vids here on the RUclips. I am signing up for his Artist works stuff as it is mind blowing to be able to watch a vid like this and his last one and be able to start ripping Samba-like solos and rhythms. I cannot wipe the smile off my face. Thanks as always GT. You make us all better guitarists.
Best player and for advanced guys they benefit tremendously and learn additional features of the the system. For them this video is amazing. Beginners to guitar who know cowboy chords C Mag A Maj G Mag E Mag and D Mag need to understand that starting with cowboy C at 5th string 3rd fret root open chord, the next C barre chord between 3 and 5 fret uses the A shape at the 5 fret barring D,G and B string with 3rd fret A string C riot note. CA so far. Then we play a G open chord shape at 8 fret 6th string and barr the 5th fret to cover the D, G and B strings. The we played the E shape 5tg string 10th fret, 4th string 10th fret, 3rd string 9th fret and Barre the 6th string 8 fret to cover open strings 6, 2 and 1. So far CAGE and now the D shape at the 1,2, 3 string 12, 13, 12 frets and then play the D string at the 10th CaGed. That order and relationship of half steps with 2 chord voicings covering 1 root note on 5th string, 2 voicings covering 1 root note on 6th string and 11 voicing covering root note on 4th string with 3 triads comprised of a root. M3rd and perfect 5 on the first 3 strings 1-3 (root low note triad, first inversion 3rd low note triad and 2nd inversion 5th low note triad all occuring on G string, then on strings 2-4, 3-5, 4-6. All shapes are pieces of the caged chords. The system all applies to B and F but they lack open chord voicings unlike 5 whole tones comprising the CAGED. The order and principles still apply. This is confusing but it will get you started
Been absorbing all of these lessons like a sponge. Finally able to improvise a simple lead break over a 1 -4- 5 instead of freezing like a deer in the headlights. A sincere thank you to you for helping me get to this point! The journey continues!
So refreshing to have someone give basic, fundamental musical information in an unpretentious easy to understand way. And your observation about RUclips videos, editing etc. etc. certainly resonates. Thanks for all the time you spend helping us be better players.
Guthrie, you are one of my real hero’s here on RUclips. Along with Jack Ruch, you guys have helped me dig deep into triads and I have completely changed the way I solo and improvise within a couple of months. It’s so awesome to hear that you are now friends with a common Hero, Billy Gibbons! I just learned Fool For Your Stocking the other day!
Watching you is like how I learned to play 50+ yrs ago back when there was no RUclips, digital media, etc. The "Mel Bay" era. But I learned from listening to or watching good players and copying what they played. The mimicking came fast, understanding what I am doing continues today. And with that, you are a great help. I am a huge fan, GT!
Never apologise! You’re the man! Would love you to talk about how you hold the pick, angle across the strings, and how light etc to get such good tone ❤. Keep em coming maestro
Together with Uncle Larry, the most inspiring guitarvideos on YT these days. Period. A little bit off topic but is it possible to do a video about your live rig , amps, pedals…Thanks for all this good stuff GT🙏🏼
Stay in your own lane!!… love it buddy. I don’t cut my own hair, I don’t do my own dental work…I can text, take pictures and make phone calls on my phone… I just want to play guitar and fun doing it!
You, Tom Bukovac, and Ask Zac are my top 3 RUclips guitar channels to watch because of everything you mentioned. Thank you for doing you! Great lesson btw.
I appreciate how you focus on teaching & playing. Your IPhone is perfect for that setting…. Simple amp setup is great. I’ve spent $1000 of dollars trying to find the perfect amp sound through all the multi effect pedals .. and that distracts me from actually learning guitar playing techniques. Keep on keeping the gear setup simple !!
Personnally, I watch and learn from the guitar work and musicianship that I hear and see on this channel. What we get here is straight/to the point/no bullshit advice and lessons from someone that knows his shit...so...THANK YOU!!
Nice lesson you nailed the explanation and demystified “CAGED” so I just can get on with playing it opposed to thinking more about it-look forward to more lessons
To me … you and Tom are my go to guys for inspiration. You have both revived the love of guitar for many players that lost their way. Appreciate you guys.
You can say that again. The jam they did on Brret Papa's channel turned me on to these cats and everything else J have seen from Tom and Guthrie continues to blow me away while teaching me something more about something that I thought I knrw if teaching something new altogether. I have been playing for 40 years and thought I was pretty decent until I watch these guys who not only have chops but the best chordal and melodic vocabularies this side of the Steely Dan sessions players.
I appreciate you GT, and I agree with you about the main thing . . . I just want to play the guitar, with and for other people, and get better doing it. That's our lane and the "RUclips guitarists" can post their gear talk and let the onlookers watch whatever channel floats their boats.
Motivated, inspired and heartbroken.. all in one video! Amazing to witness that, and in the best setting relatable to the rest of us... sitting in a room, alone, trying to figure that instrument out! Your lesson was pure gold for me. Thank you.
I gotta say how much I’ve enjoyed your content lately. I’ve been playing off and on for 15 years & watching your stuff has really got me interested & motivated to pick up the guitar again for 20-30 mins a day. And I can tell the difference. Hold on to payday, but I’m gonna buy you a beer or two. Could you do a video on common chord progressions? Whether 251 or 146 etc.
Dude, I'll be 54 yrs old on the 24th of this August, born and raised in Detroit, and I grew up listening to that incredible rhythm section and playing by the funk brothers laying down all those Motown sessions for Mr. Berry Gordy and whoever Smokey Robinson wrote a song for, and Guthrie Trapp, you are one Badass, a cool laid back mofo and you inspired my old ass to get my guitar back out and play again and learn my instrument...along with an inspiring video by Rick Beato that I seen recently...I can still learn things at my age...an older age...He started his youtube channel at 54 yrs old and look at him now. I actually understand what the caged system is now and how it relates to the fretboard...it helped my ear develop also, I became a better player just learning that C shaped D Major chord right there between the 3rd and 5th frets and everything is right there...my hand doesn't go know where all the same Cowboy chord tonality for D G C chords right from the C shape D chord...I had no clue on what I was doing previously and it wasn't like I couldn't play songs from beginning to end prior. I became a better player instead of just playing on it like a toy.
You're frickin' awesome Guthrie. A lot of what you say and show goes over my head but the more I watch my understanding of these chord inversions makes a little sense. Don't dumb things down for my speed, I'm hoping to catch up!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, chops, and for generously giving of yourself and your valuable time! Not to mention that you seem to be good human being. God bless!
You’re the best, Guthrie. Your channel is a pot of gold and your videos are perfect as they are. We learn so much from you and your talent and generosity. Don’t change a thing ever!
Thanks for the honesty Guthrie! good explanation and time on the instrument. No one can play what they can not here.Learning the instrument is the key here.A.M. Love hearing about your life in music.
You’re doing great man! Don’t feel like you have to defend or explain to folks your approach vs. how others approach their channels. Now, on the playing- I think the problem a lot of us have is - Ok so we learn all the inversions on the neck, and I get that allows you play your 1-4-5 anywhere on the neck.. but beyond that the light bulb just hasn’t popped on for me on how this whole concept is APPLIED to an actual song, or lead playing, etc. It just feels like an exercise and sounds really “scale-y” to me…
Good on ya, Guthrie. Maybe for those other guys not living in Nashville, having a polished video is how they get the opportunity to play for an audience 😊
Hey man. Subscribed to your channel. Really enjoyed this video. You say its overwhelming and there is a lot.. But it was really cool to see all the inversions in 1 video. I think I am gonna watch this video quite a few times. Many thanks.
You set a high standard in everything you play and everything you are Guthrie. Polishing the presentation would detract from what we love about you. Thank you for your generosity
Guthrie, your instructional videos are some of the best I've ever watched. I've been playing guitar for 16 years and I know that I'll always be learning something incredibly useful whenever I flip to your channel. I highly prefer your barebones approach to making videos as well. There's no need to worry about "high production value" when it comes to this sort of thing. Much love!
Hey Guthrie - totally agree on many points here, from buying local to this guitar thing we all enjoy. I'd love to see a Truefire from you be just on Caged...chord construction, etc., and really dig in to how you think about it in a practical way. I'm a reformed bluegrass banjo and hotshot rock player turned engineer, years later now delving back in and actually learning the "whys" of the instrument more fully...mostly leaning toward Chet stuff and pretty chordal stuff these days...thanks for the vid and say hi to Billy 😎
Thanks for another really interesting and useful lesson. You always have a fabulous tone from the your guitars and amps. In a future video, cam you talk a bit about the pedals, amps etc. that you're using in your videos? Thanks!
You are so refreshing for us intermediate players, you don't bore us to death like many others. Thanks so much brother for your sharing your brilliant licks and knowledge. God bless ❤
GT, youre the MAN! These videos help so much. The guitargate masterclasses...amazing. its a dose of real talk! Love it all and theres always so much hilarity! Keep it up!
Hey Guthrie thanks for being real and sharing your life knowledge in the guitar. With all due respect, I hope you are blessed with a signature guitar. I tried the J rocket GTO and love it so I'd love to see a guitar in any form that meets your specs and prefs. Much respect, Brotha!
GT,,,your video quality is more than good and sufficient,,,what makes is special is how simple it is and most of all it works..,,..simpler the better,,,,who the hell has time to edit anything,,,lol,,,not me,,,,not today,,,lol,.,,,the meat and potatoes of your totally free content, your guitar spirit, matter of fact honest presentation, solid stewardship and selfless sharing is unmatched, thank-you!!!!!!. you have changed my playing skills and fretboard knowledge forever.....
Guthrie. You are some player - been watching a lot of your live playing which is just amazaing - and some of the stuff you show us on this channel is gold. Thanks a lot.
thanks for this video, when I learned the caged system I already knew the pentatonic scales pretty much all over. when i learned the caged system, it really opened up guitar for me, and kinda connected everything for me in a way.
The biggest misconception about CAGED I see is that people think it's a method of some type - like it's a verb, when it's really just a noun. It's not a particular approach, it's just a thing;the observation of how the fretboard is laid out and how root notes (and therefore chord shapes) relate to each other. Maybe I should say CAGED model or map. Anyway, just understanding how the chords relate give you 5 ways to make a chord. For me, the next thing to work on is all the triad inversions. Thats how you learn the fretboard. Man, I wish I knew that 30 yrs ago! Great Stuff Guthrie!
Great info. This knowledge really expands your guitar playing, and learning all the chords in relation to your scales. It probably takes years to master but even starting down the road makes you seem light years ahead of where you were.
Guthrie- No need to explain the iPhone and lack of editing. If folks don't understand you are doing these vids to move people towards your Artistworks and private lessons (high end audio/editing) they simply don't get it. I personally feel pretty lucky you give these "nuggets" of info out for free. I've learned a lot from your Artistworks and the RUclips vids! Thanks man!
Right ON !!! = I totally agree and Guthrie is a "Master Player" =example on the ;bues I even told him in 1 comment a while heck he sounds like eric clapton and heck you don't get any better than that plus now with Billy gibbons and joey Bonamassa. he was at my house once to by my 1966 Gibson byrdland custom color special order back in the day it is a great guitar in Joe's vault now. Coll anyway thank you Guthrie.. Very Much m.g. in phoenix, THE .land Of the hot, =- really hot in the summer also I am sadly missing half of my right lung for the past 11, 1/2 years and then sadly lost my right kidney back in 2019. hoping and praying for the Best and happy to be a live and happy to see Guthrie share with me and US, = BIG TIME. Thank you. One comment based on what I8 AM HEARING GUTHRIE SAY = I get it, = don't sweat pro tools you are in the music Capital of the world and you are good Enough to get the Master Production people so to speak = to be begging at your door, so, it is a excellent position to be in and not to worry about messing with pro tools on your own besides it is like a killer guitar player playing a 20.00 guitar irt doesn't matter the man will still sound Excellent yea the better the instr ument cool but it is the man making the music not the quality of the instrument it all helps but that is another story right? GUTHRIE? RIGHT. COOL.. MIKE............ P.S. I do own 34 killer guitars that took my lifetime to acquire and i am very proud of them all and they are each different voices to play and perform music with and god willing I WILL CONTININUE TO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO JUST T HAT . either way I STILL APPRECIATE GUTHRIE HELPING PEOPLE LIKE ME & YOU, ALONG THIS PATH. = I APPRECEATE HIM A LOT, A REAL, LOT. A MILLION THANKS, = GO OUT TO HIM .STAY SAFE AND HEATHY.. BROTHER IT MEANS A LOT TO US ALL THAT GET IT.............. . MIKE..
Guthrie, your videos are so helpful to me, a long time guitar picker that had no clue why I do what I do on the fret board. I am very grateful for the content you provide!
Hi Guthrie, I’m in manchester England I absolutely love your down to earth approach to teaching, and your superb playing inspires so many guitarists we love what you do, Thanks !
Right on man. I just went into a Walmart for the first time in 12 years last year. I do most of my shopping at True Value, Walgreens, Calranch and places like that. They got it all. And double right on with the simple vid production. Looks and sounds great. I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't say anything. Maybe I'm just here for the guitar, too!!
Hey Guthrie. Your videos look great! No need for any fancy cameras or editing. It's the player and the content that make all the difference. Speaking of CAGED, I've been working really diligently to get this under my fingers. A great player, like you makes it look and sound easy, but it really takes time and effort to make it so fluid. Thanks! 😎
Turn on your phone and be yourself. It’s golden. We are super fortunate you give us a few minutes of guitar wisdom and practical application.
Guthrie Taggart we need some new info from ya its been the same caged lesson for 2 yrs now
At least get his name right!
You know it. The other huge task I see I have yet to even begin to learn, is just musicianship. Players like Trapp, Pierce, and them, they are far more creative. Not complaining, just saying it is inspiring to see them do their thing.
In a sea of channels that just show sponsored/new gear content; its refreshing watching your channel of actual playing!
Dude the simplicity of this explanation is legendary, it's switched on a massive light bulb and connected so many things. Thank you for sharing...!!!
Jack Ruch has great videos on this subject also
I literally click on any of your videos to just simply hear you "noodle"...that's some damn good pasta
Cmon Guthrie there’s clearly an old Duo Sonic right behind you 😂

So lucky to get professional advice and lessons for free. Really is much appreciated Guthrie, you've made me a better player
Blown away you only have two guitars. Love your videos, keeps me going. Thank you so much
This is absolute gold to someone learning the instrument. In fact to any guitar player, except uncle Larry ; )
Yes I do try to make it work time is short enough to play the guitar. Fingers Get OLD etc. Best teacher of keep you head in the game.
I'm just gonna keep on working the shapes until you tell me something new and fancy has come along. Cheers Guthrie!
There is nothing new and fancy without that. Trust me.

Together with Uncle Larry, the most inspiring guitarvideos on YT these days. Period. A little bit off topic but is it possible to do a video about your live rig , amps, pedals…Thanks for all this good stuff GT🙏🏼
The best RUclips guitar resource for keeping yourself on track.
Stay in your own lane!!… love it buddy. I don’t cut my own hair, I don’t do my own dental work…I can text, take pictures and make phone calls on my phone… I just want to play guitar and fun doing it!
You could cut your hair a little each day and it would be your land. Just be consistent
The lightbulb just went on for me! I feel like the shroud is lifted and I finally get it. Thank you!
Dude you just keep being you... No frills, just meat and potatoes. Thats why we dig you man! We will hang out someday dammit!
Amen, simple and effective. Your videos are straight no chaser. We appreciate you
Don’t let anybody get you down, I like the way you do stuff.
You, Tom Bukovac, and Ask Zac are my top 3 RUclips guitar channels to watch because of everything you mentioned. Thank you for doing you! Great lesson btw.
Man I love that you’re posting on RUclips more. Keep ‘em coming!!!
Thank you Guthrie for sharing your gift and your honesty.
Guthrie really appreciate these videos. Going back to the basics has really improved my playing immensely
THIS STUFF IS WHAT MAKING MUSIC IS ABOUT!!! THANKS FOR SHARING GT!!!
Best guitar videos on RUclips!👍🏻
GT you are an inspiration, Man - leading by example. We're looking forward to seeing you when you get up here to NY.

Just what I needed. Thanks Guthrie. This is the stuff. The stuff that helps. Keep it going. The world needs more good music makers.
GT you are such a genuine man. Thanks for your guitar wisdom.
Mind blown!!!!! Thank you Guthrie!!!
Sublime intro Guthrie! And the vids are just fine. Content is king!
Always interesting, never boring. Much respect Guthrie...
To me … you and Tom are my go to guys for inspiration. You have both revived the love of guitar for many players that lost their way. Appreciate you guys.
Who is Tom? Does he have RUclips channel??
@eduardopanameno3988 Tom Bukiovac. Uncle Larry. He has a youtube channel. Phenomenal.
@@iantaylor827 thank you very much!

Definitely my favourite RUclips channel
Great content, no need high tech recording equipment. Thank you for uploading!

God bless ❤
It's all about the content of the videos and your content /lessons are absolutely the best.
The videos are perfect brother…
Thx GT! You make a great one take instructional video.
I’m glad you don’t over-produce your videos.
thanks for this video, when I learned the caged system I already knew the pentatonic scales pretty much all over. when i learned the caged system, it really opened up guitar for me, and kinda connected everything for me in a way.
Exactly
Guthrie thankyou! You talk about your amps. Whats your live setup for small rooms. Like the Underdog? Do you mic the 2 x 12’s ?
Such a great lesson. Things are starting to click on a different level after years. Thanks Guthrie!
I have rediscovered Billy Gibbons. Those early ZZ Top albums sound so good.
The most useful explanation I have heard on the topic. Thank you.
BROTHER IT MEANS A LOT TO US ALL THAT GET IT.............. . MIKE..
So helpful and well taught! Thank you for all you do! It’s inspiring and real 💪❤️🙏
Man I’ll take raw, unedited videos over that other fluff stuff any day. The more edits, the less I watch. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s gold.
Guthrie, your videos are so helpful to me, a long time guitar picker that had no clue why I do what I do on the fret board. I am very grateful for the content you provide!
You’re hitting the sweet spot for your audience GT. I’m enjoying the lessons, the music, and looking forward to BFG stories!!!
Guthrie you are the real deal. Love your honesty and your jammin' guitar playing! Keep it up.
Hi Guthrie, I’m in manchester England I absolutely love your down to earth approach to teaching, and your superb playing inspires so many guitarists we love what you do, Thanks !
Finally a REAL opinion on what most people try to pass off as a BIG secret
Less is more, no BS. Perfect.
You're the man. Thanks for the continued knowledge and willingness to share.
Thanks! 😎
