I had to stop it half way to add something. I started playing in 1968, with no music training at all. CAGED was my "ah ha" moment! Forget the name caged, and just think chords CAGED. Start with barr G, keep the barr and play the A position and you get a C, that is also the #4 chord in the key of G! Keep that and move up 2 frets, you get a "D", or the #5 position in the key of G! If you go back to the original G barr 3, move that up 2 frets, you get the A, or the #2 position in the key of G. Now you have a box, with G, C, D, A, or the 1, 4, 5, 2 in the key of G. Starting with F baring the 1st fret, that works all the way up the neck! 1, 4, 5, 2 !! When you understand that, you just move the A position, or #4, up 4 frets, make it Am, and you get the relative, or 6m, in the key of G that would be the Em. I also used an exercise consisting of the chords that made 1000's of songs. We even called it the C, Am, F and G. It's just 1, 6m, 4 and 5. Then later the 2 is added in the bridge. When you can play the 1, 6m, 4, 5 (or C, Am, F, G) in the CAGED positions, your well on your way to understanding. That is also knowing little about music, and just using letters and numbers! I think that is part of what GT is trying/showing here, I hope. 8) He is tying scales into those positions, and that is helping me! Some of that I never thought about that way before! I'm no expert, just trying to help friends if I can. Peace --gary
The caged system should be called fucking caged system due to people not understanding that the f is used more than e due to 4th string root. Hendrix I don't have to say any more

Not sure about anyone else but this video just gave me a lightbulb moment. I have spent so much time learning chords up the fretboard and never put this together. Thank you for this video.
Hey GT I was just listening to your awesome guitar work on Nobody’s Fault but Mine, you nailed that Pops Staples guitar vibe. Your pocket on this song along with the rest of the band is deep. You took us to church on that one brother. I had to pull my truck over and text you to let you know how much I appreciate what you do.
The people of NY do not know how lucky they are to have all those amazing musicians on the one stage for 3 nights. How blessed are they. Keep up the good work Guthrie.
Thanks, Guthrie. I like the exercise of being able to outline 1 4 5 in each position of the CAGED system. That is an assignment that I will add to my list as a guitar teacher. Most of my students really need me to outline this stuff in a fine tuned, step by step process.
@@guthrietrappmusic From the foundation up. I wrote a book on this after teaching for like 10 years and just not having the material needed for the guys (and gals) who want to improvise but don't want to learn the note names. It's all about the shapes, mystery they open, and leading them to the deeper knowledge behind it all once they are into the waters and swimming a bit.

Dude, did you ever see El Mariachi? No, it was Desperado. Yea, that opening scene. So much rhythm knowledge needed for that. Kinda like some stuff you played. Yea, I need to get better at rhythm. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Man I don’t know if you did more explaining in this video, or it’s finally starting to click. Either way, thanks for sharing your knowledge brother. I absolutely want to play like you when I grow up. God bless.

Thanks a bunch. They are NOT the same at all. The Dom7 is using the flat 7 (in G that would be F) Maj7 is using the 7th degree of the major scale. So F# if in key of G. Think of Mister Sandman for Maj7 and Sky Is Crying for Dom7.
I love the Spanish sounding tones and exotic flavors. Exotic to my ear anyway. You never disappoint by playing things a little outside the box and different from the usual and in the sweetest grooviest ways.
you’re the best Guthrie thanks for sharing your knowledge, i have learned so much from your youtube and artist works courses , meeting you and getting a personal lesson is on my bucket list ! cheers my friend !
Great video. As always. Fluid guitar chops. As always. Side note. My In Stereo vinyl is due to arrive later this week! Side side note yesterday my uncle brought over a Alesis drum machine that he wanted to gift me and we got to jam together for the first time. I shared one of your videos with him cuz he had no idea who you were. And now down the rabbit hole he goes! If he doesn’t find Uncle Larry on his own I’m sharing that with him next
Thanks for another great lesson. Especially the part that starts around 12 minutes in where you unlock those target notes that indicate the chord changes.
People keep saying "don't learn the caged system" then they go to show you something that they think is better, and its not! I teach the CAGED because its just a better way to see the guitar fretboard, its not a feckin Piano, with the notes all laid out! It's more difficult to learn and to get people to understand. And your intro was a masterclass in how to apply it!
Just received the signed vinyl yesterday! I am forever grateful for the years of content you and tom have posted. I am happy to be able to support you guys for all that you have given the community.
Love these updates, GT! Thanks ya. Gee, whizz, Guthrie! That intro sounded like something my hero Andres Segovia might've played! I can't wait to find out "what they're not telling me" (about CAGED) lol. 🤪 👌 👍 EDIT: Around ~14:52 --> This is something I figured out, way, way back when I was teaching myself how to play Classical guitar! That you could find chords all around wherever your hand position is. In fact, I figured out the CAGED thingy before I'd ever heard of it. I'd literally never heard anyone call it that, but I noticed that I could simply bar those basic, 1st position "cowboy" chords to make any chord along the neck, and that the shapes were related to each other. But, I'm still learning about those relationships, and buddy, you showed me some new things---yet again--- today! Thanks, GT! ... ... ... ... --> BTW, I am STILL WAITING for SOMEONE to explain how you get "Uncle Larry" from Tom Bukavac. Anyone? ? ? (Apparently I'm not "good enough" for GT to explain it to me....) 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢
Thanks for the detail in this CAGED video. One of your best. But a request. You mentioned in a recent video that you are considering setting up to add backing tracks for some of your videos. For me your totally solo playing at the beginning is one of the most special things you gift to us. Few others do (can?) that. It’s not easy to transcribe your solos and study your playing but with a backing track it would be much harder. So, from one of your admirers and fans. What you do now is great. Thanks Guthrie.
Thanks a bunch man. I never know what I’m going to play until my ass hits that chair. The backing tracks I was referring to are for some new Artist Works lessons we are launching real soon. Thanks a bunch!
Hey man, I just want to say thanks so much. Your videos are very informative and really really good. You’re the only guy on the Internet that is professional musician, and great player that really teaches this stuff and swears by it. Thanks so much for all your content and the information that you have in your videos.
There's at least half a dozen ideas here to seriously to work on. Also working on playing behind the note....at the note...and in front of the note. Thanks.
I mixed it with the number system and just paid attention to the half step chords the 3-4 and 7-1 to learn the intervals. 145 are the majors 623 are minors. Plus the modes are built in and you know where your at in that aspect. I have since forgotten the caged system.
Totally great stuff dude! I saved this video for later. Just got off of storm duty from Debby & I’m on auto pilot but this is great & I really appreciate it!!! Thanks again!!! 🇺🇸
Gosh damn Guthrie. I'm not even done watching this vid, but had to chime in. I love playing along to your videos Guthrie. I really learn a lot from just copying what you do and it really makes a lot of sense to play the notes in the CAGED position connected to the C major scale. I feel im finally able to play the chord changes. Thanks for taking time to produce valuable content

Wonderful. Thank you very much. That's all I can say. Thank you very much. Directly from Brazil
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic lesson Guthrie! And the pieces and parts description alone with amp settings…WOW! Thanks!!!
Glad you liked it!
Man, what a lesson !Still catching my breath !Thank you ,Thank you,Thank you
I love the Spanish sounding tones and exotic flavors. Exotic to my ear anyway. You never disappoint by playing things a little outside the box and different from the usual and in the sweetest grooviest ways.
Thanks a bunch! Me too
you’re the best Guthrie thanks for sharing your knowledge, i have learned so much from your youtube and artist works courses , meeting you and getting a personal lesson is on my bucket list ! cheers my friend !
Thanks a bunch man!
Beautiful playing, my friend!
Many thanks!!
There’s no better player or educator that’s teaching how CAGED works on YT than Guthrie Trapp. Thanks for focusing on CAGED!
Thanks man! That’s awesome
Thanks for another great lesson. Especially the part that starts around 12 minutes in where you unlock those target notes that indicate the chord changes.
Glad it was helpful!
Love listening and watching one of the best of the best out there today ! Thanks for sharing your talent with us Guthrie... I appreciate you ! 🙏
Thanks so much for listening!
One of the best musicians of this era. GT is amazing🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥
Exactly! It is THE foundation of evening laid out in a super clear way. It changed my life when I was about 13.
@@guthrietrappmusic who explained it to you Guthrie?
Thanks for this great content. Just purchased Trip The Witch vinyl to support you and Tom and get some killer guitar-based tunes. Keep it up!
Thanks so much!
Just received the signed vinyl yesterday! I am forever grateful for the years of content you and tom have posted. I am happy to be able to support you guys for all that you have given the community.
Awesome! Thank you!
Cold beans! Oh boy have I got a lot of work to do! Also got the album + the Chet album in the mail the other day! Just like Christmas! lol!
Nice!
Love these updates, GT! Thanks ya.
Gee, whizz, Guthrie! That intro sounded like something my hero Andres Segovia might've played!
I can't wait to find out "what they're not telling me" (about CAGED) lol. 🤪
👌 👍
EDIT:
Around ~14:52 -->
This is something I figured out, way, way back when I was teaching myself how to play Classical guitar!
Thanks, GT!
... ... ... ... -->
BTW, I am STILL WAITING for SOMEONE to explain how you get "Uncle Larry" from Tom Bukavac. Anyone? ? ?
(Apparently I'm not "good enough" for GT to explain it to me....) 😢
😢 😢 😢 😢
I really appreciate that!
Always a privilege to listen to you Guthrie. You and Uncle Tom are just the best, man we are lucky to have you Stay safe.
Thanks a bunch, man!
There's at least half a dozen ideas here to seriously to work on.
Also working on playing behind the note....at the note...and in front of the note.
Thanks.
Thanks man!
I mixed it with the number system and just paid attention to the half step chords the 3-4 and 7-1 to learn the intervals. 145 are the majors 623 are minors. Plus the modes are built in and you know where your at in that aspect. I have since forgotten the caged system.
That’s above my pay grade!
Totally great stuff dude! I saved this video for later. Just got off of storm duty from Debby & I’m on auto pilot but this is great & I really appreciate it!!! Thanks again!!! 🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it!
First time here via Uncle Larry!...and have subscribed - loved that intro piece!
Thanks and welcome!
Gosh damn Guthrie. I'm not even done watching this vid, but had to chime in. This is so beautiful lining up with your understanding love and masterful ability to incorporate Latin music into your web of joy, I'm talking Patricia, Huevos Al Gusto, Mambo Cheeks, and many others .. thanks man... There is a dude I don't know his name but the artist Natalia Lafourcade has this older gentlemen playing an acoustic gut string mexicano guitar behind her as a coloratura, super fantastic triads fills and melodic ideas - Natalia Lafourcade on Tiny Desk
Thanks a million. Love that stuff.
Love these videos. I feel like I know you even though we've never met. If you ever get up to the Toronto area, gotta post it. Love to see you perform live.
Definitely!!
Your lessons are great, Guthrie... and I love how real you are! Thanks man! 🤘🏻
I appreciate that!
Boy this is GOLD! Coming together like never before. Thanks Guthrie!
Thank you Guthrie, I'm slowly gettin' there!
Great! Keep it up!
Love your teaching style. Straight to the good stuff without the BS.
That means a lot!!
Ahhh the tone. The tone!
I love playing along to your videos Guthrie. I really learn a lot from just copying what you do and it really makes a lot of sense to play the notes in the CAGED position connected to the C major scale. I feel im finally able to play the chord changes. Thanks for taking time to produce valuable content
Great to hear! We are all learning!
Wow, you just really helped jump start me. So damn common sense. Thanks from Bend Oregon.
Nice! Thanks man!
Any success coming your way Guthrie you've earned 100 times over. Thanks for this. Very inspiring.
I appreciate that!
Unrelated…
Just sitting down with my fresh outta the box
“In stereo” LP.
sounds so good. Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks man!
Great show! Caught Saturday night.
Smokin band. Great vibe. Off the cuff and joyful. No surprise.
The rhythm section was relentless in the best way. Thank you all
Dude, I’m still working out the funk guitar lesson in C. You are so talented and so prodigious. There are actually RUclips channels that just explain what it is that you and Uncle Larry are doing. Hands-down the best guitar RUclips channel out there.
Thanks man! Means a lot.
ThankQ GT for the CAGED reiteration ! Spectacular as always ! We are all truly blessed !!! Cheers from Thailand ! 😎🇺🇸🇹🇭🇺🇸⚓️🎸✅☕️🤠😎
Thanks a bunch! Thailand. Wow!
Essentially the same/only lesson you will ever need which you have been giving for years now, always a pleasure checking back in to your channel when i have the time now i have kids. You really helped me level up a couple years back and set me on the right path to become a better player every day. I will be teaching this to my kids hopefully in a few years time! Cheers Guthrie once again...
Much appreciated!
Guthrie, I don’t comment on ANYTHING on RUclips but I will make an exception for you. Damn, you are the real deal! A musical genius and we really appreciate you sharing it with us. See ya in November in NYC!
Dude! I’m far from a genius of any kind, but I really appreciate the kind words! We can’t wait for NYC
You are blessed and you are giving back, God Bless you, Safe Travels, Stay safe! Thanks for sharing
Thank you very kindly!
Excellent. You're a great teacher Guthrie!!
Thanks so much!
Greetings from Ireland ...Gutherie. Haven't a clue about this CAGED stuff but you explain it real well. Thanks a mil for doing these videos!!
Thanks for watching!
Ireland is my favorite country to visit.
Guthrie that intro gave me chills
Nice! Love that sound
Thanks for everything as always. I know you guys are busy, but wouldn't it be great if you brought the In Stereo party to LA for a weekend at the Baked Potato? We have a few guitar players out here who I'm sure would make the scene.
GT .. just love your melodic approach to playing, and you taking the time to explain it to us regular folks. As a long time fan of Los Lobos, I can hear that in your playing. The Mex folk stuff in particular off the "East LA" double CD. I get a lot out of regularly watching you .. thank you! PS .. East Nashville, East LA .. must be the "East" part that I like .. ha-ha.
Hell yes. I love Los Lobos. Thanks man!
