These are golden tid bits for us old "mis-taught" slingers...by far one of the best youtube guitar channels in exisitence.....thx GT....especially admire your other life observations in between tid bits...totally relatable....
This is good. I did not understand caged really until I did a triad study and just realized, hey - if you have the 135 in any key, you’ve got the major/minor chord, and the guitar is set up in a way where you get basically three main ways and two alternate ways to do that but give you five hand positions for the same chord across the whole octave. Then I had to learn all the notes on the neck to figure out how to get the three notes. Then I realize what spread triads were. Then I realized you can overlay the pentatonic and the full major scale in the same hand positions. Then I had to practice this for like six months in every key. Then I asked myself why I put off doing this for like 35 years! It’s because I was scared, it was easier to just fling my fingers around and play intuitively, but I really like this now. Anywhere I end up I can kind of pick up a shape from there and I’m not lost.
Thanks for everything Guthrie, you’ve helped my playing tremendously! I know CAGED well but I’m picking up other valuable stuff in every video. Keep em coming mate!
I have a long way to go. Been a life long player. But your channel and Uncle Larry’s as well as others Brett Papa, Ford, etc…. Have allowed me to improve immensely over the last couple of years. Thank you!!!!
Me too. Been playing forever and I know CAGED very well but I’ve picked up tons of very useful pieces from both GT and Uncle Larry. Valuable stuff that has really improved my playing.
Life Pro Tip: If you want to “get it”, take the time to really memorize the notes on the fretboard, to the level of instinct. This all gets SO much easier, to see these note patterns, when you’re literally seeing (and thinking) “in notes”, rather than in string numbers and fret numbers.
Yes, learn the notes and also intervals. It all goes together. Intervals are to me the foundation and learning the notes really sets you free in a lot of ways.

Thank you for this amazing lesson! Your explanation of the CAGED system and how chord shapes, arpeggios, and the major scale connect really opened my eyes to the fretboard. Greetings from Morocco ☀

Been playing ever sense. move from California to Florida,I was in Nashville for four months took some lessons wish I would’ve known about you then. You have open the door for me with the cage. I’ve used the cage system over the years, but could never see it like you explain it. I should say the doors just cracked open, but you really open my eyes. Thanks so much. Renold Victor
Guthrie, You inspire me SO much that I just want to play all day and learn, learn, learn. I want to take private lessons but the cost doesn't work in my budget. I would be So happy when I take a lesson from you , even if it's just one lesson a month.
I took a bunch of those lessons, Guthrie but this one just laid it out perfect even though I knew it there was small things that just made sense the way you described it in that video I’ll never forget it. I got a long ways to go and I’ve already traveled 1,000,000 miles studying. Thank you for all your help.
Guthrie I commented before I saw the last 6 minutes of your video. I’m 2 + years into playing. I’m working through pentatonics vertically. Happen to be working on G and you laid out the chord shapes within the G scale. K’Boom! Lightbulb moment. Thank you so much!!
Hey GT, Thanks to you a fire was lit. I now understand triad shapes are repetitive within the bar chords and each is its own inversion. Super cool sh!t man. ThAnK yOu immensely for that and the ever inspiring way you talk to us. Never forget you are making a big difference in the world bro! Hitting the tip jug. 🙏🏻
Hey Guthrie, I understand that some people are struggling with this concept, however I find your instruction very clear and appreciate it. Since having watched your first video on the CAGED system about 5 months ago, I've been having so much fun with it, ever since. And when you add a video on how you apply the system, I learn something new to add to my playing. Thanks so much for your uploads! Suzi V.
Jordan and Tim are phenomenal in every sense of that word. Magical stuff, GT!! You guys have redefined the way I understand music by orders of magnitude.
Remember a few years ago when people were asking if guitar music was “dead”? Well, it’s back to life and bigger than ever thanks to selfless guys like this spreading their knowledge online for FREE. So life-affirming. Thanks Guthrie.
Great intro. I've been listening to In Stereo and can hear some similarities. I love that album; it's great to listen to on my morning walk. I'm seeing it. I'm just trying to get the fingers, right and left hands, to believe it, lol! Peace, I love your insights.
OMG! GT, more o' rhat 6-string goodness! The stuff you played opening today's video was really awesome! I can only hope that I'll be able to play that well someday! I always wanna watch your hands so i can learn technique...but it's hard! Cuz I just wanna close my eyes and listen to that 6-string goodness. I guess it doesn't matter, because your damn hands are movin' too fast to watch 'em anyway.... I'd sure love to come and listen to 'the trio' some Monday eve! Can't wait. Keep this shit comin' dude! It's great! Love the lesson, it means so much! Just listenin' to ya play is great. 👍👍👍 BTW: You're right! I DO know who i am! Thanks, GT.
I bought it about a year ago. I have learned one and a half of his tabbed songs! Lol! He takes you places on the guitar neck you have never gone. You are right, such a great value.
Thanks, Guthrie!! Very clearly explained. Valuable knowledge. At this point, I have about 90% of the fretboard connected under my fingers, thanks in large part to you.
After just being a decent rhythm player and a awful lead guy since the 90s this year 2024 I decided to truly learn the guitar. 3-5 hours practice everyday. Enrolled into a year long program. I have had so many epiphany moments. All the info is out there you just gotta practice. GT rocks, dude you just flow, i absolutely love it. Thank you from Maui 🍍🤙🌴😎🎸

Thank you for these last 3 videos. The problem I had connecting the shapes was skipping the D shape. I just was going straight to the C shape from the E shape wondering why it didn’t flow. That D shape, as you explained in this video, is such a necessary piece to the puzzle connecting E shape to C shape. Explanation I needed 30 years later! Now I see where one of those flows into another shape. I see this now! Subscribed to your course. Thanks!

This videos are fantastic. I love how GT shows the best way to approach "D Shape" and "G Shape" up the neck. I'm working on it all. One thing I'm have some trouble getting my head around is playing the changes. Hitting the common tones as the progression moves. Also, I'm working on developing a rock steady rhythm. I like to call it a musical pulse.
