I read on the interwebz (so it's true) that you're not officially a RUclips channel if you haven't discussed the Caged System in a least one video... So here is my take. I really hope you enjoy it, I did my best to make it as clear as possible!
Although I've been applying this system for years now, I still enjoyed the video :) great job, buddy! I'm going to share it with a friend because you've done a better job of explaining it than I do lol
@Paul Davids Would you considere make a video of this series explaining the concept of "key" and "root". Why a musical piece or a secuence of notes and chords is in a given "key"? Can a musical piece or secuence of notes/chords be in more then one at the same time? How ambiguous or not is this concept?. Also would be nice to know how to recognize a key. Thank you. As always great videos and grrat teaching.
I started adding your useful tutorials to my 'watch later' playlist so I can go back to them...but then I realised I had added at least twenty of them and I might as well save the whole channel! I can't thank you enough for your dedication, charm and wonderfully respectful personality. You've provided real happiness and positivity in my life and I can't thank you enough. I'm signing up to the patreon today as a small token of gratitude. Thanks Paul :)
Hi Paul, I've been playing guitar mostly self-taught for 35+ years and this is the first time I've ever seen or heard anyone explain this with any common sense, plain language and a sense of humility and humour. Thank you so much for sharing. Daniel
All these years I thought it was crap I didn't feel like learning.. come to find out, I knew this. haha. But knowing that order is very helpful. Now I want to make a 35 second CAGED video. Played for 30 years bar chords and all, even some intuitive leaps... but KNOWING the next form just like that... I feel dumb for blowing it off all these years. Someone just needed to say, "Contemplate WHY the G bar chord is E shaped, it matters." I even knew about the D shape based on the 5th fret and it didn't click.
I just found your channel and have been watching and player for 4 hours. I've improved my playing more in these hours than i have the last 6 months. You explain it in detail without dragging it out. Thank you so much, Paul. Keep it up.
All CAGED is is the shape of the chord on each string where the root is: E - G shape A - C shape D - E shape G - A shape B - D shape It is important to know where each natural note lies on the fretboard. The chord will form around it depending on which string the root is found on. The scale or mode will flow around the root.
except that the G shape also has a root on the 3rd and 1st strings, the C also the 2nd string, the E also 6th and 1st, the A the 5th and D also on the 4th...
@@chr15tree The root can be found on every string in 2 places. But that's not the point. The point is where do you want to be playing that chord on the fretboard at a particular time? Low? Medium? Or high? You find where the nearest root note is, determine what string it's on and then that determines the shape. Watch good players. They aren't like John Lennon, playing bar chords jumping up and down the neck. They stay in one position and play shapes, using the root notes in the same vicinity.
@@theartfuldodger935 I think I just had an epiphany...first, thanks for your observation. I didn't realize that about "good players" playing chords in the same vicinity. I imagine that's to optimize movements or is that for voicing? Either way, I've been trying to figure out the relationship between chord shapes and pentatonic shapes. Your comment made me think that the chord shapes and the pentatonic scale shapes overlap one another in a way I hadn't thought of (I'm teaching myself how to play).... is it true that if I use a given chord shape to play a chord, that the same pentatonic shape surrounding that chord shape is the corresponding pentatonic scale? E.g. if I use the E shape to play an A chord, then the E shaped pentatonic scale is the scale around that A chord... or am I confused?
This is the first time I actually understand the CAGED system. I hope you keep making these theory videos; you seem to be the only person that explains it in a way I can understand.

CAGED is also a great way to learn chord/triad inversions up the neck, this works great for filling out a second part/accompaniment in arrangements. This is how I try to incorporate it into my playing after never using it for 20 plus years in my playing. This helps with good voice leading and trying to avoiding parallel 5ths.
I’ve been playing for about 7 months. I’ve watched your pentatonic & this CAGED video over the last few days & you’re the first instructor to explain it in a practical & easy to understand way (well for me to understand anyway). Thank you so much 😊
Hi Paul - really liked the way you explained this - especially by making some of the more difficult shapes more playable! You saying that guitar players don't play this chord like this but take this short cut ... was a huge help (and relief) - It made the whole chord shape system more accessible

Hey. I'm usually just a lurker here on RUclips but since I've been following your channel for a while and seeing your content getting even better than it used to be, I guess it's time to say thank you. This is in all honesty the #1 guitar channel ;). Keep up the music theory videos, I wish they were around when I started playing guitar. I wish you all the best !
What a help! Thank you! 5 years later and your video is still super helpful! I just recently pushed myself to get back serious about playing again. I only know a few basic chords, but a lot of theory. I've been involved in music for 11 years now. I found your channel recently and you have been a huge help!! This is the best explanation for this system I have seen. I have been so confused on how to use this system, but finally understand it and can put it into practice! Thanks Paul!
"The key is finding these shapes a logical thing to play as part of a chord progression." That's the part I struggle with. It's really hard for me to visualize.
So, the confusion comes from the fact that while the CAGED system is simple, it is not EASY. Meaning, some of the shapes are very difficult for beginners (or intermediates). Thank you for all your great videos.
Interesting... Im at work, and just got myself a cup of my favorite dark roast coffee, and I thought to myself "Im going to learn about the CAGED system." Thanks man! Very informative!!

Gotta love him.
For many years I had wanted to play music but thought it was only for the few talented and gifted people. Now, I am learning everything about music by fantastic teachers like you and others. I had zero interaction with real humans when it comes to learning music from theory to playing. I have begun to play piano and guitar on my own, albeit not well, but at least I am not afraid. Thank you all teachers on RUclips. Darn, thanks to the internet and RUclips, physically joining a class is a thing of the past.
Thank you my brother, am updated with your lessons so frequently. Another take away for me here..Thou it may seems old to one but its my first time am being introduce to: " CAGED SYSTEM" and i like it. Thank you so very much. Watching from the South Pacific.
I'm a coffee junky, I'm in a nursing home with Emphasema and I feel fine. I'm at peace, quit cigarettes 10 months ago and I bought a Fender Squier Affinity SSS and a Fender Mustang Lt25 modeling amp which is AWESOME. So I'm fortunate to be here and I have the cafeteria send 2 cups coffee on my trays and the nursing assistants get me more if I need it. Paul said coffee first and reminded me I've been so busy screwing around on my tablet I forgot to drink coffee. I always have joked with my friends I like it strong and black, the way I like my women...ok back to the video.
Jij ben a schande vor je zoort. Picked up a little Dutch in my day. Had wondered if Paul was Dutch. Now I know. Great vids Paul. My Dutch sentence was by no means directed at anyone. Just trying to share knowledge with my fellow guitar brethren. You never know when you might need it.
You know what’s crazy I have seen a lot of Paul David’s videos and even though I know the caged system I’m like where was this video when I was learning it. No one I have seen has compacted so much applicable knowledge in such a short amount of time. And as a person with severe adhd I get distracted but Paul your voice is so alluring and calming and you are amazing at what you do so I’m not even mad
this was a very helpful and educational video. Your concept of not having to play every string, but use it as a reference, really helped me understand how i can use this.
I've been playing Guitar for 14 years and by no means am I as proficient as I wish I was, but I just never understood the application of the CAGED system. I simply learned all the chord shapes up and down the fretboard and always thought the CAGED system was complicating the whole process. I now finally understand the beauty and simplicity of the CAGED system not only in learning these various shapes but the application of these shapes that help shape a holistic perspective of the entire neck. Thanks so much for this lesson, it was really awesome!
Go have a premium good quality coffee and you dont need a liter of it. And I'm not talking about Starbucks go to Europe and you'll never look at coffee the same again
Your explanation was crystal clear. I stopped playing for a decade after my band broke up in my mid 20s. Starting to pick everything pack up again now again, and these lessons are just amazing at bringing me back to the fundamentals. Thanks so much!
Man. Paul using dental floss probably still sounds better than me playing guitar. He's also the first guy who made an understandable CAGED video. At least for me. :)
Be aware, some people really rock the dental floss. The legend says Paul Gilbert learned to shred on dental floss, even before he learned to shred on the guitar. Later, he refined his dental flossing with a drill. A true prodigy!
Yeah, it just sounds so much like common sense to me. If you know the notes on the neck, you can instantly apply the shapes. Making it a whole system to explain such a simple idea is unnecessary.
Paul basically used the hipster aphorism that he was doing caged before it was cool. Not only before it was cool, but before it even had a name. Hipster achievement level unlocked. 😉😁
But he's right, this understanding of open chord shapes being transferable down the neck was understood by many guitarists before it was given a catchy name. On a separate note I don't understand why people feel the need to take positions on different ways of understanding the fret board. I like to mix and match 'systems' personally.
If I am honest you are the best free teacher you act like a friend and explain things in a beautiful way. You take considerably complicated topics and break it down to sound simple. At a slow pace and a calm voice you are honestly the best RUclips teacher in guitar. I am intermediate player and you explain I didn’t even know. You cover a various amount of topics in guitar and you cover them each very slowly and a nice pace

I never knew that's how it works. I'm gonna stsrt doing that
Just discovered you, subbed after the sip of coffee for some reason I can’t explain. Look forward to checking out your channel
You’re a great teacher and we love your videos, we specially love the way you explain theory in depth... great job mate!
Rockstar lessons. So logical. Stylish. Intuitive. Easy to follow. Rock on.
Great lesson. These chord shapes just pushed me past a lull in my playing.
Interesting... Im at work, and just got myself a cup of my favorite dark roast coffee, and I thought to myself "Im going to learn about the CAGED system."
Thanks man! Very informative!!
Bring your guitar to work
I thought the caged system was some crazy way of seeing the fretboard, but I’ve been using it for so long... strange
Finally something that i can understand, Thank you ❤️
The CAGED system or the bleeped out swearing in Dutch?
Finally got a glimpse of the caged system, thank you for the super clear lecture
I've watched this video over 10 times over 4 days straight - I COMPLETELY understand CAGED now. Thank you PD!
12:38 is precisely when my brain exploded from the the CAGED system clicking in my head
Mine didn't "click," just exploded. I came to the comments to see if I was alone. But I'm a complete newbie, and drinking from a fire hydrant right now.
Totally. Played for 30 years bar chords and all, even some intuitive leaps... but KNOWING the next form just like that... I feel dumb for blowing it off all these years. Someone just needed to say, "Contemplate WHY the G bar chord is E shaped, it matters." I even knew about the D shape on the 5th fret and it didn't click.
“Gravity is such bull*#%”. I laughed so hard at that!
Same here!
Me too!
Loved it 😅
“Gravity is such Bullsh&t” 😂😂😂
sounds like a jojo's reference to me.
Its working against me ohwoah gravity, wants to bring me down
@@lachlanbruni8339 My favorite part is that all the lyrics of gravity are about self-sabotage, in addition to Mayer's song My Stupid Mouth early in his career where the chorus is "my stupid mouth got me in trouble, I said too much again". Then he goes crazy in 2011 or whatever and has all those insane interviews that get him cancelled for a few years... it just feels like John Mayer's career is a TV show with really good writers that know how to foreshadow well.
You had me at "Gravity is such bull***t"...
But first...coffee
Always Coffee
Agreed Paul
I love that part 😂
Lol 😆
9:07 I want to learn to swear in Dutch
Luc Verhoeven and in English?
Jesse Terpstra It'd translate to English as: Goddamnit, who the fuck is building there.
Paardenlul. Merrigan's maaar taught me that.
"godverdomme wie de fuck is er aan het timmeren"
9:08 echte Nederlander
I wonder what was said here
@@GuitarType01 "God f*cking damnit who the f*ck is doing carpentry"
@@GuitarType01 It means that he is a genuine Dutchman (man from the Netherlands)
Hammer time 😒
Finally a lesson on the CAGED system I actually understand.
thank you! great video! whats that beautiful music in the background? (0:00 - 2:00)
Best explanation of the CAGED system. 👌
I want to hear more about gravity.
I went back 3 times and watched you sip that coffee, mmmm coffee . . .
As an American, I'm offended by the small size of your coffee cup. Love your videos, please keep it up.
Go have a premium good quality coffee and you dont need a liter of it. And I'm not talking about Starbucks go to Europe and you'll never look at coffee the same again
After many attempts at learning the caged system from different resources... and how to employ it in my playing... i finally get it. Thanks Paul
Randy Marsh it's rare to find one that makes full sense, isn't it? It's nice to finally understand!
Thanks! I try my best to explain it as best as possible. This was a difficult one, because it spans so many fields of playing!
Be aware, some people really rock the dental floss. The legend says Paul Gilbert learned to shred on dental floss, even before he learned to shred on the guitar. Later, he refined his dental flossing with a drill.
A true prodigy!
ova by the dental floss
"Godverdomme, wie de fak is er aan het timmeren?" ~Paul 2018
Turns out I've been using the CAGED system my whole guitar journey and had no clue.
João Miguel Faria Same. I've heard of CAGED but never understood what it was referring to.
João Miguel Faria Same😅
Yeah, it just sounds so much like common sense to me. If you know the notes on the neck, you can instantly apply the shapes. Making it a whole system to explain such a simple idea is unnecessary.
1994savvas Exactly what I thought
Its basically power chords but like with regular chords
Wow, amazing, I’ve been playing so many years. Now I can play the chords up the neck, and I can see how they all connect. Thnx.
That trick with omitting the string on the C shape is super useful. Thanks.
Paul basically used the hipster aphorism that he was doing caged before it was cool. Not only before it was cool, but before it even had a name. Hipster achievement level unlocked. 😉😁
Haha, oh yes... I played Little Wing long before Hendrix was born dude!!
But he's right, this understanding of open chord shapes being transferable down the neck was understood by many guitarists before it was given a catchy name. On a separate note I don't understand why people feel the need to take positions on different ways of understanding the fret board. I like to mix and match 'systems' personally.
I'm not knocking him, nor discounting the truth of his admission. It was just a joke.
I know, I was not criticising you just pointing out something that might not have been appreciated by guitarists brought up on the CAGED system
Steve Soldwedel haha yes
Obviously , one doesn't need a capo with this technique...
This guy’s voice is relaxing
paul, you are a gem. a great teacher for sure but i also love that you let your personality show. the part about the neighbors cracked me up.
