- Here are some examples of why CAGED is so crucial, and a few of the many benefits it holds.
Also, some fun ear training tools and major scale connectors to get you playing music quicker. It’s all about the melody and the chords. More to come on this, of course.

“You HAVE to be willing to STOP on the chord tone” when going up/down the major scale, otherwise if you keep going it’s a run on sentence…. That simple thing hit home all of a sudden. Thank you GT, appreciate you and all you’re doing.
Great mini lesson for me, I’m 72 years old. Keep the slow and easy ones coming. Thank
This is why CAGED is so crucial, part 2 and part 3 PLEASE PLEASE!!!!
This guy is my new favorite. I stumbled upon him this week and I love his no bullshit approach to gear and music. Guthrie is the real deal
Mike from Birmingham. Started playing at 12 now 51. Gigged my whole life doing mostly a "rock" thing. Thanks once again for a great lesson. I discovered your first video lessons during the pandemic and OD'd on them. I refuse to get bored or stale with guitar and your videos keep motivated and have expanded my knowledge and skill. Truly a life saver during work from home "social distancing" life. One day I'm coming up there for a few private lessons. I'll bring a good bottle of red!!
Come on up, man! Anytime 👍🎶😎
Your personal growth as a person it’s so noticeable. Everyone gets your musicianship and passion. Thanks so much GT.
I see CAGED as the key that unlocks the door to a whole new world. CAGED is not the end of the journey but the beginning of a new journey.
Love the little wine glass. It brought back memories of my Italian grandfather who always drank from a small wine glass just like that one. He would also make his own wine. Another great lesson GT always a joy coming to this channel.
I love that!! I can picture it 👍
Dude, it finally clicked, this week I was playing a M1 m2 ska song bit…. Trying to find a solo… found all the shapes and starred playing the changes with the shapes under the scale noodling, I can see the targets…. Lots of mistakes but I’m not just wandering around the scale aimlessly hoping to land on something that sounds like it was done with purpose. Mind blown! Easy to over load the brain though, two chords is manageable, not sure how you track complicated changes, experience? Anyway, thank you for the keys to the kingdom, time to explore!
Fantastic! Thanks! 🙏👍🏼🎶
Thanks again man!!!
Real stuff man. Thanks
Thanks for sharing Guthrie. Much appreciated

Another great lesson.
Yup a light went off for me. Thanks
‘This is not the shit that they tell you that’s not gonna work. This is the shit that works.” Guthrie, you are awesome. I love everything you do.
Yup, no fancy glass to drink wine, salute!
This is a great lesson on the CAGED system. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, GT.

Guthrie,
Well done and very helpful!
Thank you.
that's a beautiful tone man
Hey Guthrie, just wanted to say thank you and share with you how much these short lesson nuggets mean to me. I am a 66 year old player since age 13; semi-pro, regular gig-er, consider myself an ok player…yet have felt stagnant over the past few years. For a while, watching your short lesson gems, I was thinking, “I’m never gonna’ get all this!” The past few days, however, I started noticing bits and pieces showing up in my playing, feeling really inspired by the tidbits I’ve learned and applied. I realized, I don’t have to absorb all of this at once, BUT, your tips are seeping into my vocabulary and I’ve a new excitement about pushing forward and bettering my music. Man, Guthrie, thank you very sincerely!😊 Blessings,
Jimmy

Best demo on CAGED system I’ve seen!! Thanks!
So many little gems in this lesson and everyone hungrily gobbled up, thanks as always.
Love the teaching style! Real working musician no bullshit! Thank you Guthrie! Much respect sir!
Thanks been hoping you put some more musical tips out it's making perfect sense as well
🎶C.
Fantastic 👍cheers! 🍷
Watching you is like going to church. I wonder why I don’t more often.
I have been playing for almost 15 years and not gotten very far, but this video, which I have probably watched 15 times now, has opened so many things for me. You bring it all together, not always easy to follow, but your teaching is fantastic. This is a gamechanger for me. Thank you.
❤️ huge fan
Cool to sit around with you. Enjoyed your session, man!
This is a very useful video lesson for all musicians!
My favorite YT guitar teacher. Thanks so much Guthrie🙏
I wake up on the weekends, grab my phone, guitar and coffee and say let’s go Guthrie!!!!
Everything you need right where you are. 🔥
Hey Guthrie, that was one of your best lessons, thanks so much for sharing the music and knowledge. That really helped, these simple ideas are the best ❤️❤️
Thank you! I always struggled connecting the chords. This really helps.
Guthrie, I really enjoy your videos and especially your playing. I’ve followed you for awhile now and have watched your trio show every time my wife and I are in Nashville. Keep it up and I hope to see you early may at the underdog again. Thanks man!
Man! What a great way to start the day! You are kickin' 2024 in the butt! This is really good stuff, man.
Guthrie! This was the one! I've been following you for a while, and have been doing some TruFire stuff. I learned the caged positions a few years ago and that helped me be able to chord up the neck but still struggled with melodies to connect chords or compliment them. I tried arpeggios and scales but it all felt so random. There was just a disconnect. I couldn't figure out what to do with them musically. Thought I would be a lifelong chorder. I can learn songs with melodic lines but never felt any freedom to improvise. Ive been playing since I was a teen. I'm 61 now and I can't begin to tell you how much fun I have had since this jewel of a video turned on that light bulb. I think it finally clicked! Thank you!!!!
Guthrie, Thank you for helping us and you are super inspiring. I believe you are a master musician with an open heart, and that is a rarity on this planet. I love that you keep bringing us back to simple yet complex understandings of the guitar with caged and major scale relationship. I am a Guitarist in the Bay Area with 50 year hands on and you help us see the instrument so great. Blessing!!!!!!!
Thanks Guthrie! Enjoy your dinner man!
Good choice on Desanos! I have it anytime I’m in town. Thanks for the great lessons! You and Jack are my favorite teachers!
What a great lesson man! Next time you come to Spain ,you get a good bottle of red wine from me.
Guthrie I found you several years ago when I was recovering from surgery. I watched listened and learned a lot from you. It took a while for the caged system to sink in to when I could visualize it on the fretboard. One of the biggest breakthroughs for me was triads. Once I saw them the chords around them magically appeared to me . Before that it was endless noodling trying to learn scales but never retaining the information. Found myself all over the place wrong notes, not staying in the key, just notes that didn’t really work over the chords.
Thank so much and keep preaching the gospel of caged.
Thank man, this is eye opening for sure. Im having trouble connecting all the dots with chords and there relative scales. Definitely cant wait to dive in more!
Big 10-4 on the Pizza and wine! It’s religion where I’m from. Used to have a wine press in my basement. Played many a Bitter End gig, the only real gig left in the village. The thought you put into your videos is much appreciated bro or as we say in Brooklyn Cuz.
Another great Lesson Guthrie! Your previous lesson on transitions from 3rds to 7ths has opened up a whole new world of blues that isn’t minor pentatonic to me. Thanks
thanks for all you do, be fun to work in some dom 7 and jazz approaches too.
awesome man, drilling home the caged system, youve made me a better guitar player and really appreciate it Guthrie. The funny thing is, it actually simplifies everything once you get it flowing it frees up your brain to put more emotion and feeling into it all.
Guthrie - I literally stumbled across you on YT, searching Tom Bukovac vids, and I am so glad. You share so many music types - melodicism with country, rock and jazz, AND practical tips on everything important for guitar players. You have a new follower for life!
My light bulb’s getting brighter! Thx , man!
This video hit home for me. I've seen hundreds of videos regarding the CAGED system and I understand it but this one clicked......finally, how the system works together is more clear.
Another awesome lesson. Thanks for all of the musical nuggets of gold.
Thanks for listening
Without a doubt, nothing made as a much of a difference in my playing as getting the CAGED system into my head. I'm not even close to mastering it but it sure does help!
Just when i thought you couldn't get any better!😂..Been watching you since vhs days!.. thanks for this!!
Thanks for these great little lesson's Guthrie!!!...bar none the best on the tube, I can't wait to see the collab with Brett P.
Hey Guthrie, your mini lessons are awesome. Reminds me of a college class on chord melody I took back in the mid 70’s. That’s what they called it before the internet. Once I learned that it opened up the whole fretboard.
Talk about a lightbulb moment.
Before I worked that out, I would spend hours transcribing songs by ear. Once I got that chord melody/caged system under my belt everything made sense and could figure tunes out. Or visualize a song better.
This is gold people.
GT; Thanks for what you do.
Great post! Connecting is the key. Knowing and understanding how to use the fundamentals is satisfying to hear and play. I love playing runs when it sounds “right”. Also, setting the table of predictability, makes the moments of spicy changes stand out
Great tutorial Guthrie, your lessons and style of play is the exact kind of guitar player I am attempting to be. Nice clean melodic rhythm and phrasing that has emotional meaning. Keep up the great work, fellow Aquarian.
Thanks again Guthrie! So many good little nuggets to take away. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and through process on these 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Love the shirt! Guitar house of Tulsa! Awesome place! Drew Winn and the gang
Thanks, buddy! Your videos help bring all of the bits and pieces I’ve learned over the years come together.
Glad to hear it!
BEAUTIOUS intro!
This is so great. I have been working on CAGED and arpeggios for a couple of months, and am getting more familiar with it. I have been trying to work in the shapes of a 1,4,5 progression with it, but just doing the arpeggio shapes, or even the different scales is not as musical as this is, and I need to hear musical to keep me motivated practicing. Thank you for this.
Nice teaching. I just subscribed also 👍
Thanks Guthrie.. and keep up the content. It’s appreciated. You’re one of my go to guys for getting me out of ruts. And the simplicity of your vids is refreshing!
Much appreciated
Guthrie, this is great quick lesson. There are a lot of folks teaching what to play on a chord(while your on a chord). However, search far and wide and there is not a lot of training how to phrase to connect one chord to the next closest different chord up or down the neck and I think this could be one of the most valuable lessons you could teachto help people play lead guitar. I have heard many say you play beautiful melodic phrases. I encourage you to put out some thorough lessons(maybe with Brett Papa) on how you think about and practice to CONNECT a chord to a different chord smoothly and what are your preferences on what chord tones you target on the chord your going to forward and backward. Not just the major key one - four - five but pick some other popular progressions like a 3-6 progression so we see what you think to target in the minor progression and how you connect those ideas. Maybe some minor songs that modulate to its relative major like Wayfaring Stranger. I believe a lesson like this would help a lot of people take off to play lead guitar. I believe YOU would inspire and help a lot of people with just as much impact as Pat Flynn’s homespun video had done for you years back.
Thanks. I offer tons of lesson options on all this. Just go to my website of look at the links below. It’s ALL there 👍
Super helpful! Thx! Also a Artist works subscriber
Glad it helped!
It’s so weird that I came across this today. I was trying to decide whether to start a new course series on modes or CAGED. When he says that this is what the pros use and to forget all the rest of that, it was a light bulb moment. Can’t wait to see more on this GT.
Great guitar lesson! Bonus learning that GT likes to drink wine from the same kind of glasses I like to use! 💯
Good stuff man thx gonna pick up tix to the 3/20/24 show at the bitter end since it's just a hop , skip , and a jump for me . Looking forward to checking out the GT Trio
Awesome! Thanks a bunch!
Undying gratitude that you post these lessons for us to benefit from. You are a knowledge keeper and truth teller of this instrument. Thank yoy
I must have drank too much wine because I apparently can’t type the word “you”.
@@AdamStachelekoh bro it’s that auto correct thing it seems to have gone nuts just like HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey, the movie . 😳
Triads are the key. I wish I listened to my guitar teacher 30 years ago. But, I’m trying to make up for lost time. Thanks to you for driving home the fundamentals
Chord changes, which become landing zones for phrases and double stops, perfect!
That is THE proper glass for wine!
I just drank my wine straight from the box!!
Are you my uncle?
