  • Here's a great lesson (in my opinion) on using all the things we are learning combined to go from the one chord to the four chord. I think I even slipped in going to the five chord as well. Hope you enjoy it!

The last time I watched this I didn't know the arpeggios or the major scale shapes. Now that I do know those things I hear and see the way you are using partial shapes to spell the chords.
This is what you often talk about, learn the chord shapes (caged), then learn the arpeggios and the scale shapes.
The way you are using the major pentatonic and then the major diatonic to cycle the chords just clicked for me right here in this video.
I don't have a guitar with me at work as I watched this but I paused the video and went over it in my mind, combining what you said with the Ionian licks and excercises I've been working on over the past two weeks.
You are right of course GT when you said that it won't happen over night but repetition of these things that you HAVE to know will unlock the more interesting things that the guitar can do.
Thanks again GT, I'm getting it finally after a year and a half of working on this stuff.

Genuinely, this is the lesson RUclips was missing.
    Thousands of vids on arpeggios
    Even more on scales
Following video is always “now use these to solo (write melody, etc).
How to connect chords, actually CONNECTING the chords and how to use scales and arpeggios in conjunction with each other.... this is what I needed so badly.
    Thank you so much man.

Guthrie, there is a saying that those who can do, do and those cant, teach. You can do both. Those online doing teaching are okay but they lack the practical aspect of a professional who foremost makes his living playing music. This is why you will always win-you are teaching from the point of view of a professional musician first. Everything has value and works. Thanks man.

So for a while now, since the Tim Pierce visit videos, I've watched you fly through chord changes, so melodically, I knew you were arpeggiating, but that's it. And here you show us. Arpeggiates up, scale down. What an awesome pattern. Since the triad video lesson you did, any song I'm learning, I learn the 1,3,5 all over the neck. That was great and way more helpful than I realized at first. This is just more amazing direction to put it all together. Thank you Guthrie! I wish I could give this video multiple likes. Usually people who are among the best players in the world seem (understandably) to struggle with distilling the underlying core concepts. Even if they can do that, it's another thing to be able to convey them clearly to people who are way below their level, using practical simple examples that make the point stick - that's the teacher's gift not the virtuoso's gift. Guthrie seems to have both gifts. Thank you!

I had a piano player show me this stuff. There is so much information. You talking I to IV. The bass intro to “My Girl”is V / I
It makes me rethink how I learned music. If anyone gets bored play ‘em one of your original tunes.

Hey man I’ve been really digging your videos a lot lately. Super informative. Especially the chordal stuff. Can you please make a video about how to go from the very beginning of your approach to learning all the chords/triads and then where one should move to after that? Like a step by step fashion of if you would go learn all the arpeggios next, then scales, then pentatonics, etc...... I’ve been playing for around 17 years and have recently decided to go all the way to the beginning of my playing to fully analyze it all. Start from square one. Putting in a lot of theory work and attempting to fill any gaps I may missed over the years. Your chordal lessons have def opened my eyes to a new approach and I would love to see and hear how you would personally go about learning everything in a step by step fashion. Keep it up man. So glad to hear you mention melody.
Seems like it is becoming a lost art in pop music today and it is lessons like this that will hopefully keep us aware of the importance of a good catchy hook.
    Thanks.

Donald Butcher Thanks man!! I usually hear some sort of melody or hook in most pop muisc. It’s the blues rock / jam band genre that you don’t hear it.

Long and substantial teaching videos are great for me. Despite all these youtube-gurus are saying :) Actually I am personally very comfortable with this format 25-30 minutes lessons.

Great lesson for connecting lines through the 1-4-5 chord. I found using your idea led me to finding a lot of other cool lines. Great stuff man. God bless.

I've been enjoying your content! I've struggled a bit at points with exactly what to practice to really work on the ideas, and I think this is a video that will really help me get over that hump. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and time!

Hey GT! Sure felt like you were talking directly to me. Makes me want to get in the comment section and say 30mins of chat back at you! Keep up the great work. Again great way of explaining, and I learned this as if it were separate, could make it work, but for me this explains the why. Makes everything I have been playing for years relate. Thanks again!

Question, would you describe this technique as sandwiching the arpeggios with walking up or down the major scale?

    • @guthrietrappmusic
      @guthrietrappmusic  5 лет назад

Fishy Phish Thanks man! I would just call it playing out of the chord shape. But I call everything that. The scale comes from the chord.

I could hug you. Love you guy. So talented what a gift. I found you not letting you go. Lol My girl is one of my favorite songs.
I started watching you and so hook on you. Thank you a beginner.
If I could learn that much I would be the happiest person. Love you for doing it slow and saying the strings and chord. Manny hugs.

If it sounds good it is good! That's the lesson to be learned here. Use your ears and not a bunch of theory to confuse the issue. Guthrie is terrific putting the importance on ear training above everything else.

Started teaching this stuff to friends and soon professionally back in the 80's after I learned it from piano class (I had to transpose it to the guitar because we never had a piano at home). But I enjoy watching all of these videos from the basics onward. You're never too good to not get something from refresher courses. You can get a lot of insights into a players deeper understanding of music when they talk "too much" also. A person can see it that way if they choose, or they could just learn something instead.
So even though I personally know all the theory being taught at this point, I still choose to learn something new here each time, so I do in fact. Even it's just seeing you do something different than I do with your pick hand or whatever. So thanks for spending the time with us Guthrie, it's much appreciated. Keep in mind too that people that complain are nowhere near as many as those of us who appreciate. But also, some of those who appear to complain are in fact trying to help however awkward it may come across, and those can be tricky to spot, I know.
But besides all that, the most important thing here is that Guthrie is a man who knows how to correctly wear a hat. ^-^
