Everything you do here is a pure goldmine... unfortunately, folks just don't want to work for anything anymore. You got to dig deep if you want to hit that motherlode, peeps!! Thank you, ALWAYS, GT!! You are a dear, dear treasure to those of us that know. God bless you, brother!!
Dude! Just to be able to watch you play and see the fretboard is lesson enough! I’ve gotten heaps of chop from you. Keep em coming and thanks so much for sharing!!! 🙌🙌🙌
As a long time player (40+ years), and lucky enough to gig every week, I can tell you Guthrie is the real deal. I've been following your channel for a few years (I found it as far back as the Corona Lessons!), I've just got the Truefire course and it's fantastic, I'm waiting on my daughter to give me In Stereo for my birthday tomorrow, and I'm saving up for a day with you hopefully next year. Both you and Uncle Larry are absolute legends. Thank you....
I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we watch these videos for 2 reasons. 1. To hear your stories. It feel like catching up with a friend. 2. To see what idea you throw at us to work on until the next video. Keep this stuff comin! I certainly look forward to it!
All these years I've been learning licks instead of the basics were WASTED. Yeah, I got in bands, and played gigs, and had fun, but I'm back-pedaling madly now, trying to learn how to build THAT HOUSE, instead of this pentatonic shack that is caving in on me. There is no youtube video that substitutes for hard work, but yours inspire me, and have set the bar high. I needed that. I will be at that 3rd & L gig, one way or another.
Good stuff Guthrie. This is why I love Garcia so much. He played the chord tones with passing notes and chromatics etc. to weave his beautiful solos. RIP Jerry..
Nailed. I read a lot on the internet about people analyzing JG's playing with modes. While not incorrect, I'm of the mind set that he'd make his primary choices from triads. I'm getting in deep with players here, but I did the Artistworks Bryan Sutton course to get my picking hand back in shape (lost a finger tip) and I feel like that strong connection to bluegrass, like Garcia and Guthrie have, is thought this way. For me, it's just putting words to describing music. But I "see" the guitar better in chords and this way of explaining has really helped me out quite a bit. It's actually connected all the other stuff for me in a much more compact way. I'm not sure if GT is interested in that sort of thing, but damn, would he be a good fit for one of those Dead things.
ITS THE CHORDS, THE CHORDS, THE CHORDS GT,,,,,,PLAYING THE CYLES,,, WHAT,S WRONG WITH PLAYNG THE CHORDS.....CAROL KAYE,,,,,EXCELLENT STUFF GUTHRIE. THANK YOU.☀
Dude, the opening bit with your eyes rolling back in your head half the time is a frikkin clinic all on its own. So glad I found you on the inter tubes! I love your playing. Never mind the gripes, there’s always someone having an off day somewhere. You inspire me every time I hear you play 🎸 Much gratitude 🙏. Much love ❤
Great content, as always. The more you work at it the more stuff makes sense. One big moment in my learning was realizing that major, minor, dominant, diminished and the 7th's were really the functions of the chord notes as they relate to the key you are in (D min is the 2 in the key of C major, D-F-A-C may be the 1-b3-5-b7 of D but they are the 2-4-6-1 of C and that is actually what they relate to when you are playing that chord in the key of C major)........ When you look at the actual notes of the chord in the context of the key you are in instead of relative to the chord root, you see how all of the notes are from the key you are in and also why 1-3-5 are major chords, 1-3 are major7 chords, 5 is a Dom7 chord, 2-4-6 are minor/min7 and 7 is Diminished / min7b5 / half diminished.......... those chord configurations fall within the 7 scale notes of the same key. When you see that it becomes easier to build some good sounding things outside the "rules" on top of that framework. I know in my case I got hung up on major, minor, dominant, diminished for a long time. I guess I didn't tie the chord into the key signature and was always confused about how the pieces all fit together. I drifted from I major to ii minor thinking more in terms of key signatures of the chord roots rather than how they all fit together in a single key. Though it's not a topic of much discussion among working musicians, that is modes at work. It's kind of something that just happens without a bunch of talk. I-Ionian, ii Phrygian......... vii Locrian. Each contain the same 7 notes and produce chords that go together in a single key.
What's up GT. Your lessons are exactly what they need to be for people who are willing to do the work over the course of a few months. Your demos show what's possible by mastering the fundamentals. Then you explain EXACTLY what the fundamentals are in each video. Guitar is really simple, discipline is the challenge. To all you undisciplined folks, that's not a GT problem, its a YOU problem.
Perfectly said. He lays out sheer guitar truth and if you actually apply it in the way he’s explaining and using your fkn brain and endure some tedium, you will unlock the fretboard.

I think some people like to be spoon-fed "licks" in super slow-mo but that I s not what is going on here. Hou are all about useful concepts which can and do improve all of our playing. I also look forward to your storytelling because you have a great sense if humor! Keep doing what you are doing. Also, I have been digesting the new CD and it is excellent!! There is a LOT to digest! I swear one of the earlier tunes would have been at home on the Dicipline record by King Crimson and I was not expecting that! Your tone throughought is killer!!
Hey Guthrie, I'm a retired veteran from Canada and I absolutely love your Chanel, I've learned more from your videos in the last 6 months then I have in ten years watching all the other clowns that promise instant results. Also going to Nashville to watch you play some where with Uncle Larry is definitely on my bucket list. Keep doing what you're doing, and screw the ney sayers.
Your advice about Major, minor, Dom7, Maj7 chords is well said. I don't understand why ppl are afraid of learning anything "related" to "theory." 😮 I think it's the word "theory" itself. Good morning, Guthrie, 6/2/24. great to wake up to hear you play, get me inspi red too for the day. Never care about the let's call the the cronies out there. . their brains, must not work correctly. Yo are a fantastic player and I got to tell you , I love the way teach and play and perform , also I really do enjoy the story telling as well. it is all about keeping the crowd. isn't ti. Weather on stage and or in these videos. to me you are keeping the crowd. You are working you are making money you are sharing, you are giving back all good karma right? and you are teaching lots of us and god will ing we will all become better and better players. You even try to direct or help the lost noodler's that are lost and may or may not care for they just love to play so much they have a blast but you are =10,000% correct you must follow the chords to sound correct as you navigate thru a song especially live on stage. if you want to keep the gig and keep a crowd and keep them dancing and the cash register ringing. Please continue to teach us, I love you man. P.S. share some Eric clapton stories to us too. Thanks, Mike in Phoenix, Az. Stay Safe and healthy and keep playing. I got to say, i know i would, sure like to get that Martin too. I bet it is a good on. I sure WOULD LIKE TO OWN ONE OF THOSE CLAPTON MODEL MARTINS TOO, AS WELL. YOUR THOUGHTS?? Please, and thank you.. Mike..
You're an awesome guy with a boat-load of talent and skill. Flush away the negativity you get about sharing your stories. Your fluent playing gives me goose bumps. I listen to every one of your videos I can. Grateful for you!
People who pretend to play guitar are the only ones who could criticize your channel or sharing knowledge brother. Shit I’m not even a country guy so to speak but I understand enough to know that music is universal and there’s only 12 notes and we all just wanna connect to something. So when a more experienced musician and player like yourself takes the time to show knowledge to people- that’s the ultimate respect and love. Cuz you can put that camera down and still keep gettin better at guitar whether or not you share. Anyone who gets music/guitar couldn’t insult another musician for sharing. Just wanted to say as someone who knows nothing about nashville- i respect your chops and I appreciate any gems that you wanna share. I humbly thank you for your time. Any true musician or musician to be understands that we all just wanna show somebody how to play music with us so that we have more people to play with, so that we can share that magic with somebody who isn’t there just yet. Anybody with any hope in music wouldn’t treat a musician like that. So again. Thanks brother, and I’m gonna show anyone who wants to learn too. The trick is that you learn by teaching too. New ways of seeing
I am mature enough to respect a highly experienced and succesfull musician like you Guthrie - a person who makes a living in Nashville and records with my hero Uncle Larry. If you say something that may seem obvious to me (at the first sight) it means I didn't pay attention enough to learn it as you did and there are always things to learn to become better. For me there is nothing more dangerous than not beeing humble and open minded to respect someones background. Thank you for all the videos. I'm rather new to the channel but trying to learn this, practice it and pass it to my guitar students. Lots of respect Man.
For what it’s worth I love this style of video. You make the viewer feel like they’re in the room and I don’t think that’s easy to do. To hell with all the naysayers.
Brother you have made my life on guitar so much simpler, learn Chord shapes, tones/ arpeggios pentatonic, major scale, in the five positions, and that will open the finger board, well it did, thank you.
Guthrie is a godsend for me. Because of what you said. I’ve went over a decade without conceptualizing the fretboard and chord tones, and now I am, and I sound 100x better.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love this channel. The format is perfect, I always come away with something. “The videos are not what they’re supposed to be”. Wtf does that even mean. Lame. Guthrie, thanks for the free content, it’s entertaining and very educational! You’re not obligated to do this for us viewers. Bless you 😂
Your style of teaching is unique and highly effective! Keep it going! And I must say - the unedited sneeze was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while… says so much about your approach….
Your lessons are absolute gold! The people who criticize your videos or lessons, don't understand that they either are not at a level yet able to truly understand what you are teaching, or not making enough of an effort to understand them. I've been playing on and off for almost 20 years and only after I found your channel did I have a giant breakthrough, sending me on a new journey of discovery searching for more videos expanding on your little nuggets of gold. I don't understand everything and that's ok. I learn what I can learn more over time. People, remember, your panning for gold here and looking for small nuggets too. Be thankful!
I’ve watched tons of your videos and have learned a lot. I’m also on Trufire and am studying your course. Great content all around. Keep going and thank you!
I love your channel and your playing. Turn the comments off or don’t even look at them. It’s not worth it. People on the internet live to talk shit. What you and Uncle Larry do is amazing.
I started watching your channel a while ago and it’s a breath of fresh air. I love the no BS personal nature of the channel and the way you interact with the viewer. Not to mention your mastery of the instrument. Keep up the great work.
No idea how it took me so long to find this channel. I have been on my guitar journey for 20+ years and have been following Brett Papa, Tom B, Marty, Pierce, and so many more. So glad I found your channel!
Screw those guys that don't care for your vids. I was watching a video today with you and Brett Papa from 4 years ago and you're pretty much the same other than a little older and dare I say a little smoother (if that's possible). The price of success includes negative input from the envious. If people would watch and actually listen to what you're saying they would probably learn a butt-ton about guitar. Some of what you put out is over my head for now which is why I hit the archives as my knowledge level goes up. Keep up the great work!
Guthrie. This channel is exactly is it should be. The fundamentals that you “preach” on here (for free) have transformed my playing and I for one, love you sharing your pro musicians experiences
The building a house analogy is the best, absolute best, approach to the guitar I’ve ever heard. I’ve been playing longer than many of your viewers and I’ve learned enough to know that I haven’t learned enough. Your concept is one I will use to grow my knowledge. Thank you
Guthrie dude, I have a long list of guitar hero’s but you are truly my mentor when it comes to fretboard knowledge to steer me in my path as a guitarist which guess what, makes you one of my hero’s I love what you do and I thank you for your musical contributions to my list is which most paramount at this stage of my musical career
Dude! You desperately need me to give you some guitar lessons😂😂😂 j/k. Awesomw playing! Been playing bass for a while played guitar for a bit about 15yrs ago and now getting back into it. Just started watching your channel and im diggin it! Thank you for your videos!👍
you are a great teacher and musician. i m a old meatal head i m 63 years old and find your videos infromitive i have learned some much from you that has made me a better player. i have been playing for 50 years goes to show your never to old to learn your are truly one of the best.
GT - unrelated to your lesson here (which I enjoy musically and also the lifestyle chat!). But just wanted to mention (you’re probably aware) a guitarist coming to Nashville in July that I think is going to be the next great guitarist to come out of the UK…Chris Buck. His band Cardinal Black is playing 1 show at Basement East in mid July. You would really dig him and his playing if you don’t already know him.
I traveled to Nashville (brought one of my brothers with me), a year and a half ago, to check out Nashville and to hopefully meet you and catch you out performing somewhere.. mission accomplished and I have the pics and videos to prove it! If I may provide some advice.. just block the ignorant, uneducated haters and forget about them! You have an Army out here, and we Love you Guthrie! Play On, Brother!!!
Keep doing what you do - you”re consistent content and approach opened my eyes to the absolute fundamentals. No shortcuts involved - just the facts - Thanks GT
Excellent as always, Guthrie. May I add that something that helped me many years back, was understanding the harmonised scale . That is the relationship each chord has to each other . My teacher asked: if we’re playing a C blues , what key are we in if the one chord is C7? The answer is F . This changed my musical life. Love your lessons mate . Greetings from downunder.
Guthrie your videos are Amazing!! I appreciate your talent , honesty, generosity of sharing knowledge, and your personality! It’s a vulnerable thing to just turn on the camera and go , that’s what we love ! The people that are critical of these videos need to open their ears and get the guitar out ! There is gold here! Thanks 🙏 In Stero is on repeat , love it !
Years ago I played with some gospel guys and the producer told me (as the guitar player) to "put the curtains on it". He was referring to the last thing to dress up a room. A phrase I've taken with me and has influenced how I approach many songs, but I haven't heard much since then.
I love the format! I get more stuff to practice watching you play at the beginning than I do from any other channel. Keep doing what your doing my friend. Fuck them.
"it's 99% your ear, if you can't hear this stuff you're never gonna be able to play it" - I am so glad he came right out and said this. This is a problem with guitar teaching these days - especially on platforms like RUclips, in my opinion. Trying to learn an instrument, like guitar, from videos and lessons that focus on patterns, etc. puts too much emphasis on the visual. Learning music needs to focus on the audio, and developing your ear. Obviously you need to learn technique on your instrument to be proficient, but learning, understanding, and practicing musical concepts needs to come FIRST. There's a reason why ear training is something professional musicians have historically had. We listen to music - we don't watch it. Instead of spending all our money on instruction that focuses on scale patterns, and/or flashy gear, we should be spending it on Music Lessons with a good teacher. Just a thought.
Thanks again for sharing glimpses into your daily life!! I don't understand why anyone would give you grief about your videos or their format ! If they want a full length indepth lesson then pay up and get one !!
Weeeellll Mr GT, who the heck would complain about all the musicians wisdom you offer FOR FREE on this channel? Its fantastic that you share not just the guitaristic stuff, but all the other real-world things that matter in the human life of an artist. Thank you, thank you....and BTW, the new In Stereo album is now on permanent rotation here in my little home. A fantastic album of real music.
Hey Guthrie, from the first time I saw one of your videos it was obvious what you share is gold. There is no ‘should’ about what you share, please keep doing what you do. That you take time out from the rest of your life to share your knowledge and experience is unbelievably generous and I can’t thank you enough for what you give. The people who don’t get it and criticize are being dicks who wouldn’t be happy no matter what you did, don’t let them bring you down.
I really been enjoying these videos. You're teaching style is nice and relaxed and right to the point, and you have opened my mind in some ways that were much needed to help improve my learning on guitar. You, JD, and Tom have really been putting out some quality content in the last few years, and I can't thank you all enough. Sure wish I could make it to the release party in August, but I have other commitments. It would be great if they were made available for paid streaming! I see 3rd and Lindsley is already set up for streaming, hopefully you can make it work. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see these awesome performances! I'm loving the new album. Keep the great content coming. Cheers from Sonoma County!🥂🎶🎸❤
These videos are a joy to watch Guthrie. The first two and half minute jam was one of the best I've seen you do. You are one musical mo'fo' with seriously nimble fingers. Did your mandolin playing influence your guitar playing? Keep up the good work man and don't listen to any naysayer.
Anyone complaining about these free videos... Yeah not much to say about that... Thanks for all the insights as always!
i don't know how anyone can criticize this channel
They are an idiot and don't know good music, if they do criticize. Me, I love this channel.
Like can't GT customize the lessons to suit just me and what I want😅
They criticize when they are jealous. Sad people.
Sad people...😢
Aah-greed.
Trapp is one of the GOATS. And he’s a damn cool cat too. Love this dude
Guthrie...don't sweat the haters.
The fact that you put these videos up and I can watch them for free is an amazing gift and I feel fortunate.
That's a mighty fine vase full of flowers ya got there, Guthrie!
Hey man my guitar was in storage for 10 years and now I play every day thanks to you and Tom. Frankly anyone criticising these channels is an idiot.
Welcome back! (It was a woman, wasn't it?)😅
@@flyballhdeg9775 Ha! That’s funny. It was coverband burn out 🙁
@@josemelrose5465 We wrote a song called "Hobby Killer" about those women. 😄
Hey Guthrie! I agree with the others saying don’t change a thing. Your mix of playing, talking and teaching are perfect.
Total agreement!!
I third this. Casual perfection.
100%
GT, teaching me the line “no extra charge for mistakes” is the cake. Everything else is just icing my dude. Keep it going and ignore the haters.
Man it’s like getting a present in the mail every time I get one of your RUclips video notices . Great stuff as always. You inspire all of us.
And for free.
Dude! Just to be able to watch you play and see the fretboard is lesson enough! I’ve gotten heaps of chop from you. Keep em coming and thanks so much for sharing!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Awesome, thank you!
You get perfect clarity every time Guthrie, you are one of the best in the biz !
Love the playing, the lessons, and specially the truth telling! Thanks!

Hey Guthrie man, thanks for the little scalar 6ths pattern between 0:47 & 0:57. I liked it a lot and I’m gonna have to steal it.
Guthrien nails it everytime! Thank you for being so genuine !!
I learn as much from listening to you play as I do from your explanations.

Great lesson! I need this so bad! I’m working on this and it’s so good to hear someone of your caliber teaching its importance. Thanks!
Hey man, saw you at The Underdog Monday night. Love the new tunes and as always, I’m inspired every time I hear you.
I love what he’s playing, how it sounds, tone and phrasing, vibe, omg, dreamy stuff
My experience exactly 👍
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love this channel. The format is perfect, I always come away with something.
“The videos are not what they’re supposed to be”. Wtf does that even mean. Lame.
Guthrie, thanks for the free content, it’s entertaining and very educational! You’re not obligated to do this for us viewers.
Bless you 😂
Thank You for Real Guitar Lessons! Jimmy Stevens from O.B. would Agree!
I love your approach man. Great playing too.
I love your channel and your playing. Turn the comments off or don’t even look at them. It’s not worth it. People on the internet live to talk shit. What you and Uncle Larry do is amazing.
Man, I could watch you playing that 335 all day! Thanks for such great content!
You’re the best. I always enjoy the lessons and update on your thoughts and life.
Keep doing your thing, Guthrie
Don't change a thing :) Really enjoy your videos.
I started watching your channel a while ago and it’s a breath of fresh air. I love the no BS personal nature of the channel and the way you interact with the viewer. Not to mention your mastery of the instrument. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Guthrie for doing what you do!
You give good information doc. Knowing the basics goes a long way.
Watching and listening to you play always lifts my spirits.
Keep doing exactly what you’re doing, killing it as always! You Larry and Jack are the real deal. Never apologise, your posts are fantastic! ❤❤❤
Wow. That little solo thing at the end blew my mind. That was so good.!👏 I hope I get tickets before they sell out. Amazing playing
No idea how it took me so long to find this channel. I have been on my guitar journey for 20+ years and have been following Brett Papa, Tom B, Marty, Pierce, and so many more. So glad I found your channel!
Love the great stories and lessons! Thanks again, Guthrie!
Don't listen to the haters!
keep telling it like it is! Great stuff! These free lessons and Truefire lessons are the bomb! I've improved my playing watching that stuff! Thanks!
Wow. Your playing is so beautiful.
No busting on this end! Great videos Guthrie. I appreciate them.
you are a great teacher and musician. i m a old meatal head i m 63 years old and find your videos infromitive i have learned some much from you that has made me a better player. i have been playing for 50 years goes to show your never to old to learn your are truly one of the best.
Groovy sounds, stellar playing, and fun/funny stories as always!
This stuff from GT is real and spontaneous much better than anything else. I listen carefully to everything and get loads out off it thanks GT 🎸 🎸 🎸
Keep doing what you do - you”re consistent content and approach opened my eyes to the absolute fundamentals. No shortcuts involved - just the facts - Thanks GT
Thoroughly enjoy relaxing after work with a cuppa here in UK watching you share wisdom. Eff the haters
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, GUTHRIE, LOVE WHAT YOU DO!
Love that you make these videos. Thank you.
Thanks 🙏
In Stero is on repeat , love it !
And that might be one of the most gorgeous guitars ever
Thanks again for sharing glimpses into your daily life!! I don't understand why anyone would give you grief about your videos or their format ! If they want a full length indepth lesson then pay up and get one !!
I support you Bro! Great video today.
You're a good man, Charlie Brown. God bless ya, brother. Thank you.
My family has been in the biz for a long time. Much respect. Real deal.
Love this channel!! The playing in the beginning is epic!
Dude! Love your playing and of course your tone. Totally inspiring.
Love all your videos Guthrie, never miss them. Always great musical advice and always great great playing. Keep them coming.❤
You’re awesome, I really appreciate your channel. Including the humility. It’s motivating.
Bless you and the horse you rode in on! 😂
I have been songwriter in the Van Morrison or Steve Cropper mode but I have incorporating more lead guitar thanks to these incredible lessons Thx GT
