I’ve been playing guitar for shoot…. 40 years now…. And this is one of the best things I’ve ever worked through on guitar…. I took this Corp. progression and I ran it through all 12 keys over a period of about two months. Running the triad all over the neck and then practice soloing all over the neck and I honestly can say this transformed my guitar playing not only from a neck awareness and visualization perspective, but also my ear started thinking ahead and hearing Melanie notes before I played them…. Thank you for this Guthrie…. anyone who reads this take two months of your life and do what I did. It will change you as a musician forever.

Took Guthrie’s course on Artistworks, for a year, and learned ALOT. The major sticking point for me is I need to learn the caged system, after that, will be signing up for another year.
Just in case anyone is wondering, a secondary dominant is a dominant chord of the next chord. Ab7 is the dominant chord in Cm. It sounds good because the dominant chord (the V chord) always leads your ear back to the I chord. Another example is E7 to A. In the key of A, E7 is the dominant, or the V chord. You can do this for any chord, just insert the V of the next chord you’re going to play before it and you’re in business.
I have been avidly following GT since the first Brett Papa video that I was introduced to him, and it took me a year or two to realize that if I want to understand his improv, I had to learn what he said to learn....knowing the chord shapes of CAGED is only the basic foundation, you have to dive into the arpeggios found in the shape, triads/pentatonics/major scale....but if you havent really studied triads and the major scale the way you should alot of info will fly over your head. Once you dive into those topics as well as relative minors....it all starts to make sense, It just doesnt happen all at once from a free video or three....I would love to afford some one on ones with Guthrie, but im good at taking what I get and knowing what I need to learn, and I use GT videos to that extent....and now im still just intermediate, because the more you learn, the more you realize you dont know. Guthrie has taught me so much in the last 4 or so years, and I havent been able to pay for it, but hopefully I will some day

One thing I learn from GT's videos is patience. Sometimes I think I should watch a 25 minute video with a lot of information and grasp it and apply it immediately. This is funny since I've been playing 35 years and it has taken 20,000 hours to get where I am today as a player. My advice is take a 5 minute "chunk" of material and focus on it for 20 minutes. Then move on to something else like learning a song you've wanted to learn. I've found if I spend too long on one thing I get distracted, bored, and I don't retain what I've learned. Thanks Guthrie. I'm a better player today because of your RUclips stuff and the 2 courses I've purchased.
Oh, and it is ok to give a "teaser" on RUclips for free in hopes of selling your videos. I've learned to eat 3 squares a day and like to get paid for my work too.

This past week I've been playing the triads in the key of D below around the 5th fret. Each set of three strings has three different triad shapes, so I'm kinda getting D and E with one shape, F# and G with another and and A and B with the third, C# with whichever one is handy, then moving on to the next set of three strings and so on, deriving the shapes as I go and accounting for minor and diminished. Sounds tedious to write out, but has been great fun, and watching Guthrie's videos is what makes me think of doing stuff like that when I'm noodling. Now, seeing this video, and seeing how he's doing the same thing with the chords from his progression is very interesting. My buddy Kent and I used to play "Blues for Dixie" (chords on the Internet), and its progressions are a lot like the one Guthrie is using here. I'm motivated to go figure out how to play Blues for Dixie all over the neck using triads... thanks for another blast of inspiration Guthrie!

I played guitar 20 years ago, and I have picked it up from time to time because I've been busy driving trucks getting by for the sake of my family surviving , but after watching Lions like you and uncle Larry Bret Papa etc ... etc... man, I had to get to know my guitar again, and I thank you all for that !! .I am pleased to say today I thought f it I love this so much and I feel I have something to give to people man I had to start a channel of my own. Knowing you're a very busy guy working on several projects at a time, as a 66 year old guy I would like to call your attention to trying to juggle too many things at one time. I would like you to use caution in spreading your time and effort too thin. Don't burn yourself out and lower your immune system. You sure as hell don't want to become sick from overextending yourself!
Been watching mr. Trap since since he went on with Brett papa/ Marty , he is usually way to advanced for myself, but this video breaks it down like no other , when of his best instructional vids, although just sitting back and watching him noodle is awesome too!!!

Frank Vignola has TrueFire lessons showing how to do comping rhythms on just the 3rd and 4th strings with complex chords changing a lot. Remarkable how much the ear hears the chords change with only two notes. Guthrie is showing a variation on this.

Yet again, you're pressing on such a good point, Guthrie. Thank you. I think so many of us learned 'chords' as an entity unto themselves, never registering that the exact same notes of the chord/triad, are what makes lead and soloing possible, never mind, imaginative rhythm playing. It's all the same cake as you mentioned. Only seeing 'chords', shortchanges the value of the notes that comprise the chord, especially where intervallic playing possibilities are concerned. When we know chords and triads, and especially, when we know them all over the neck, that's when scales, arpeggios, and intervals can begin to make so much more sense. Their point of origin -- literally starts to fall under our fingers -- from what we once saw strictly as 'chord or triad' shapes. It's how we choose to connect the dots (notes of the chord/triad) that expands 'playing chords', into roadmaps for soloing and chord leading. It's a beautiful eureka, when we can both see, and hear, this truth. Peace always, Guthrie.

I've been watching your channel for years and thoroughly enjoy it. This chord progression is something you’ve played in the past and it caught my ear big time. I practice it quasi-religiously and am currently working on the triads with some single note stuff and diads tossed in. "Gold" as you've labeled it is totally accurate. Side note...coffee is expensive and I also try to finish every bit. Just sayin'.

this is not the first time I have learned this progression from you GT. This time I got a little more into how it all works and retained a bit more on maybe trying to to solo over it some day. I wanted you to know however that when I learned it the first time I used it to write a song and that song turned out to be a crowd pleasing one. I can now tell my band to go to the dominant 7 chord passing to the minor 6 which I could not do before just now. It's true that I get lost a lot when I watch your vid's because you move thru things pretty fast but I always take away something useful. I have been a professional musician for almost 50 year now and I wish I would have had RUclips and instructors like you back when I started. Thanks for sharing your talents and have a great 2024!

You played this progression in a video a couple years ago. At the time, I was learning triads. This was a great progression to practice triads. I ended up writing a song using the progression. It was a great learing experience for me. Thank you, Guthrie.

Great video. The chords are the foundation of any song. Building solos off the chords helps to tie the solo to the song. This exercise will also help tune your ears. Hear notes that you didn’t hear before. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I would love to have been in the room when Guthrie was a beginner/intermediate player and decided to start memorizing all these triads and linked scales up and down the neck. What was that feeling like - that decision? This is a task! And I'm a pianist who can read notation and knows theory. The fretboard is like pawing around in the dark, to me.
That was at a time when there was much less noise in the world. I was in a sleepy little town on the Gulf Coast, surrounded by music and had time to work all this stuff out when I was a young teenager. But trust me that it works!
This chord progression has opened my eyes and ears to a whole new world of possibilities. Having such a killer progression to drill triads and chord shapes has literally changed my approach and in the past few weeks I’ve seen and hear my playing mature and begin to sound so much more composed. This is so great! These vids helped me so much getting out of the pentatonic prison! This chord progression and the way you handle it with the triads is so helpful. I need to practice this for a few hours when the kids are in bed, but it opens the fretboard. After a while you're not even thinking anymore, it just comes out of your hands. Just like you said when you were on the lower strings: "I can't believe I did that!". You'll probably never (or seldom) play in that register, but it's the ears that for some reason drive your fingers to the right notes without thinking too much. This takes practice, for both your fingers, but mostly for your hearing. This is a great chord progression and technique to get to a higher level of playing if you're a bit stuck like me. Thank you GT for all the great video's! I love watching them and they really help me. Besides that, I also like the East-Nashville alarm clock in almost all vids!

It's basically the same progression as bell bottom blues. Starts out sweet then turns immediately Moody. 1-3(dom7)-6-4 etc. Magical

It's all the same cake as you mentioned. Only seeing 'chords', shortchanges the value of the notes that comprise the chord, especially where intervallic playing possibilities are concerned. When we know chords and triads, and especially, when we know them all over the neck, that's when scales, arpeggios, and intervals can begin to make so much more sense. Their point of origin -- literally starts to fall under our fingers -- from what we once saw strictly as 'chord or triad' shapes. It's how we choose to connect the dots (notes of the chord/triad) that expands 'playing chords', into roadmaps for soloing and chord leading. It's a beautiful eureka, when we can both see, and hear, this truth. Peace always, Guthrie.

I've been watching your channel for years and thoroughly enjoy it. This chord progression is something you’ve played in the past and it caught my ear big time. I practice it quasi-religiously and am currently working on the triads with some single note stuff and diads tossed in. "Gold" as you've labeled it is totally accurate. Side note...coffee is expensive and I also try to finish every bit. Just sayin'.

this is not the first time I have learned this progression from you GT. This time I got a little more into how it all works and retained a bit more on maybe trying to to solo over it some day. I wanted you to know however that when I learned it the first time I used it to write a song and that song turned out to be a crowd pleasing one. I can now tell my band to go to the dominant 7 chord passing to the minor 6 which I could not do before just now. It's true that I get lost a lot when I watch your vid's because you move thru things pretty fast but I always take away something useful. I have been a professional musician for almost 50 year now and I wish I would have had RUclips and instructors like you back when I started. Thanks for sharing your talents and have a great 2024!

Great video. The chords are the foundation of any song. Building solos off the chords helps to tie the solo to the song. This exercise will also help tune your ears. Hear notes that you didn’t hear before. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I would love to have been in the room when Guthrie was a beginner/intermediate player and decided to start memorizing all these triads and linked scales up and down the neck. What was that feeling like - that decision? This is a task! And I'm a pianist who can read notation and knows theory. The fretboard is like pawing around in the dark, to me.
That was at a time when there was much less noise in the world. I was in a sleepy little town on the Gulf Coast, surrounded by music and had time to work all this stuff out when I was a young teenager. But trust me that it works!
I like how you can switchup the a maj to a min minor to give it a twist and either go back b7 or emaj
This chord progression has opened my eyes and ears to a whole new world of possibilities. Having such a killer progression to drill triads and chord shapes has literally changed my approach and in the past few weeks I’ve seen and hear my playing mature and begin to sound so much more composed. This is so great! These vids helped me so much getting out of the pentatonic prison! This chord progression and the way you handle it with the triads is so helpful. I need to practice this for a few hours when the kids are in bed, but it opens the fretboard. After a while you're not even thinking anymore, it just comes out of your hands. Just like you said when you were on the lower strings: "I can't believe I did that!".
You'll probably never (or seldom) play in that register, but it's the ears that for some reason drive your fingers to the right notes without thinking too much. This takes practice, for both your fingers, but mostly for your hearing.
This is a great chord progression and technique to get to a higher level of playing if you're a bit stuck like me. Thank you GT for all the great video's! I love watching them and they really help me. Besides that, I also like the East-Nashville alarm clock in almost all vids!
