The cool thing about playing guitar or any instrument is that you learn something new everyday. Having someone like Guthrie sharing his wealth of knowledge is priceless. There’s always a take away from these videos and I don’t care what level you are at. Great work Guthrie keep those vids coming. The Brett Papa videos of you and Tom at the Underdog are freaking Awesome.

For those of you following along my wife had her double mastectomy yesterday! Everything went fantastic and the chemo was able to kill the cancer that spread to a lymph node! Huge relief for sure! She’s resting now and a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders! She’s high as a kite on meds but still makes fun of my playing so her mind is still solid! 😂 Thanks again for the kind words and support! Let grab a guitar and celebrate!

Tribal knowledge is an awesome concept. Like the guy that introduced the term to you I am a retired military pilot and I get it! Most folks love sharing aspects of their “tribe” to others. It’s not some closely guarded secret, it is just some unique aspects of a particular cultural or professional that’s part of the glue that holds it together. I want to continue learning more of your tribal knowledge and hope to take some lessons and an immersion experience in the future. You play the guitar - I’ll fly the aircraft…..

I almost think of Nashville as the music version of the California gold rush. Some got in early when it was a goldmine, got rich, and everyone saw their success and wanted to copy that. and now a lot of people are coming in later hoping to find the gold - only to have scarce mines. Right now Nashville is the place everyone wants to go to get their guitar career going, so it draws a lot of views on RUclips, instagram, etc. The irony is that there’s so many talented guitar players in Nashville that the new people going there are just like a small pebble in a big lake.

    • @johnmcevoy3598

I'd rather do cartage in Nashville than stay stuck where I am. Whether you 'make it' or not isn't the point. It's about the scene and the musicians you get to meet and play with, or just get to know.

Man, that segment from 21:03 to 22:34 is like a full compendium on soloing! The first minute (21:03 to 22:03) is your straight textbook diatonic stuff and then you branch into blues/jazz/fusion stuff. Absolutely brilliant, free flowing, and so phenomenally articulate.
If someone learns how to play that minute and a half verbatim, they'll get so much guitar under their fingertips!

Hey GT, could you talk a little about your picking hand on one of these episodes? I notice you play with an "Irish" feel if that makes sense. You hear it a lot in bluegrass, which I'm sure is your source, but it's sort of like your scales are flavored in triplets - even when in straight four feel. And the notes you land on and start on are always pleasing to the ears. I know that's from years of playing, but maybe you can distill the function for us mere mortals?! 😅 Hope that makes sense. Your tone is so remarkable that it's easy to see why Billy Gibbons had you bring your tele to that snare drum event! 😍 That's all anyone really needed in the world... Even ol' Billy!! 💖

Please keep it coming. Get a private lesson if you can. Even if you are getting what G is laying down, meeting him in person and being able to ask questions and get a vibe for things like how he views music will boost your playing. I've been playing for over 50 years and when I got back from my lesson last July my band mates complimented me on my playing improvement. ( he helped me with my tendency to over play, or play in every section, it's ok to let things breath like a singer or horn player.) and It will make a lot of things you already know fall into place. Know the foundation/chord of the song confidently , then apply the Arpeggios/scales and riffs musically. targeting the sweet notes. The things you already know will sound more polished when applied with the caged outlook. Learn to play the song in every area of the neck. Know the chord, know which chords are coming up in the song, apply "riffs" and arpeggios that compliment the song and further the tones the song needs. don't step on the singer or whomever is soloing. And hit the tip jar so Mr. Trapp keeps putting this stuff out.

  • @karmadave

Thanks for another great lesson. I've noticed that cords you used share many of the same notes, such as A and F#m and A and E. These sound really good in the same progression and make it easier to hit target notes as the cords change. It also allows the creative use of double-stops. I've been working on this type of stuff with my own instructor so your lesson is nice reinforcement. Love your lessons Guthrie. Keep doing what you're doing and ignore the a-holes 😃
