      Davie504 gave him the eyeballs he needed - he has the talent, but wouldn't have gotten big without Davie and he could at least mention him in the class of 'people who were doing bass youtube' who were inspiring and helpful to me (and the bass on social media)

    Davie got me into watching Bass videos on RUclips. While Davie is a great bass player, Charles is among the absolute best and his musicality is stellar.

    Saw Charles in 2018-ish midwinter in a small cafe in Brattleboro, VT while it was snowing outside. There were probably only 4 or 5 of us there, but my friend and I were absolutely blown away by what he was doing and knew he deserved a bigger audience. We talked with him a bit afterwards and he was a super nice guy. I am so happy to see him on Rick's channel and with the following he deserves.

      Honestly, most people didn't even know bass was a separate instrument before Davie.

    Rick... you are the man! Way to use your platform to promote another EXTREMELY talented guy. I've watched many of Charles's videos, but not everyone knows of him. You just took his channel up another couple hundred thousand subs. He deserves to be seen/heard.

    I still remember the first time I saw him play in a Davie504 video. I had seen Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham and many other amazing players over the years and I was still absolutely blown away by how clean and how musical all his solos are. Definitely one of the best bassists playing today. Great interview.

    I have been following Charles for a long time and consider him one of the best bass players of our time. The technique is fantastic. But in this video I also saw that he is also a great musician. In pieces with a guitar where there was no need to play, he did not play and did not make an "ego shooter" out of the music, but played only what was needed. This is just top! Perfect.

    I don’t play bass, and I think he is my favorite musician. Never seen such fitness, technique, passion and musical sensibility in one guy.

    A few years ago I had the feeling that Charles was possibly the best bass player of his generation but, as times goes by, I realise that he must be one of the best musicians of his generation. Bass is just his fafourite instrument, but his musicianship goes well beyond.
    Having him on this channel is testament to his skills and creativity.

Charles's overplaying is for his youtube content, which honestly works! That's why he's here. However, if you hear his composed music, it more musical and nuanced.

Etc, so many legends most people who watch youtube have no idea. The people who inspired charles. Charles is good, one of the better. But he is not on the level of these dudes. Musically

    I am a massive fan of both of you. One of the reasons I enrolled at Berklee jazz course designed by Jim Stinnett (RIP) was Charles reference of him . Mr. Berthoud is pushing the boundaries of the language of the instrument like Jaco, Stanley, Victor and Michael Manring has done in the past.

      I have trouble finding better and I’m a proud music snob. I even put him above Wooten and Lespool in specific ways. Lespool is my personal closest since he sings while playing which is a whole other level of insane to me. People often forget that singing is adding another instrument to play simultaneously

      @@terri6854 doing both at the same time with completely different cadence is extremely difficult. Just singing is easy, I absolutely agree with you. Adding slap bass while doing so is the difference

      Agreed. I don't propose to know the solution but shorts are the nail in the coffin of attention span and diligent pursuit of knowledge. It's the equivalent of a headline and nobody reads the story like reading the title of the cliffs notes and suddenly an expert until the next title of the cliffs notes they read

    Charles' video of his version of "Barbie Girl" remains my favourite among all the other amazing videos! That one is just the best!! But that's just MY preference, of course - others will have different favourites.

      There aren't many things I thank the algorithm for, but the Barbie Girl video was how I found out about Charles. In the interview, Charles mentioned that he prefers focusing mainly on the music, and that's been great. I do miss the comedy sketches with the wigs though!

    Such a great player. He's a real pioneer. I don't know if there's another bassist today who is as well-round as Charles (e.g., fingerstyle, slap, tapping, and even pick playing.)

    For my money, Charles is the greatest living bass player from a technical standpoint. He can do absolutely any technique, at any speed, with ridiculous precision. There's a tendency to assume that everything we see on RUclips is "fake" (or at least highly edited), so it's awesome to see Charles playing something live and realize he still sounds incredible.

    Man... hearing Charles playing lead on bass... takes me back 50 years... he reminds me of Tim Bobert... when Tim first blew me away... with his bass solo's... he got my attention then... as Charles... gets my attention.. now...

    So many players have amaz9ng technique but say very little. Charles creates stunningly beautiful phrases and his technique serves the music every time.

      Yes I didn't know that. Probably 80% of the real musicians I watch on RUclips went to Berklee.
