Dude I’m 42 years old and I’ve toured and played most of my life and I think you are amazing. You gotta be one of the best teachers ever and you got chops for days. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos and they help me continue to learn and grow as a player. 🤟🏻
I’m in the same boat as you man lmao. Guthrie made me realize (after years of playing professionally) how much I don’t know. Obviously you can never learn it all but this dude has got some wisdom 🤘🏻
Man if only RUclips and your lessons were available years ago. I can't even imagine how much further and how quickly I could have advanced if I could have learned this stuff, that's taken me a decade to learn on my own. You're videos should be treasured by those delving deeper into theory for music and guitar. Even now, some things that I've known for nearly 2 decades are being reenforced and even taught to me. Especially the last note played on a chord verses the first note played over the next chord in the progression. I.e. the 7th of a chord resolving to the 3rd of the next. Your musical ear is impeccable.
Sean ..... My history is similar to yours and I am currently doing the Artistworks course with Guthrie. I think you seriously need to have a look at it if you like these videos.
@@kieranoloughlin he had a few lessons, 6months+ back, on just that, the 7th becoming the 3rd. It was the ultimate eye opener for me to start connecting everything! One of those, "if someone would of just showed me this 15yrs ago" moments.
@@lancecass8997 yeah, it really connected for me. It's a concept I was learning by ear and only pulling off half the time. When I did, I knew it was awesome but I wasn't seeing the underlying theory. Now, with a bit of practice, I'm improvising licks using it all the time and it really turns heads.
This is priceless. Have been learning scale and appergio workouts separately and just could not combine them together. Now I can make music with both thanks to you!
Thank you Guthrie. Right when I felt like I was never going to wrap my head around this concept your video came along. You are really the only teacher on RUclips who is able to articulate this technique so well, and your playing is very inspiring. Thanks for all the work you've put in to teaching us on RUclips
Thank you Guthrie for being such a humble and good human being. I know, you, and a lot of people with no ulterior motives, they find it difficult to promote themselves. But take it from me we are benefitting from all your posts. Thank you and good luck in the future. Stay cool😎🎸
Guthrie this was by far one of the best lessons I have had! Definitely the most impactful youtube video I have seen. So glad that you keep sharing your knowledge with us, and even though I am sure it feels like you may be repeating yourself, please keep the great content coming even if you've told us before. I have watched you say a similar message a few times, but this lesson was filled with so many AHA moments. I really made a leap today and you are to thank for that! It really clicked, and I love that you gave some exercises to do. That helped me put it all together. I understand "what" you are doing and the "why" you do it, I just didn't realize any ways to get there or how to practice to see all these shapes. I've got a while before I am even close to sounding as fluent as your playing, but this was a big step for me today. Thank you Guthrie! I will send a tip your way in about a week.
This is mind blowing and so simple at the same time. I've been longing to figure out how Vince Gill plays the way he does and I believe your lessons have opened the door for me. Now to go re-listen to all of his music with CAGED in mind... Thanks so much!
Thank you for teaching the guitar in detail of how to create music. It's not easy to find a good guitar teacher like you, and I just want to say your a blessing to the music world. Thanks again, GOD Bless.
You are a true star and a true gentleman. I had about 3 or 4 lessons as kid and was bored shitless. I could listen to and learn from you all day and every day-and do! Thanks mate!
Hi Guthrie, Im a self taught guitarist and I’ve been looking for some good learning material on youtube for a while. I’ve never even written a comment on a youtube video but felt I had to tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I think you have a great teaching style, and you have a way of connecting with your audience on a personal level. Thank you for your videos my friend, I have learned allot from you. God bless. Greetings all the way from South Africa Christi
Christi Herbst Thanks a bunch!! I’m glad it’s working for you! I’m actually coming to South Africa next year to teach a clinic at the Black Rino Resort Safari Lodge.
You’re making a difference, Guthrie. Adding so much joy for those of us who play for fun. Buying myself the ArtistWorks program as an early birthday present.
I love your teaching style ! I’ve been watching you for the last over 2 or 3 years .. I take in all I can from your videos thanks for actually teaching and not showing off like many do on the tube .. everyone knows your amongst the greatest in Nashville yet you still take the time to teach great guitar 🎸 playing .. Thanks again for sharing the music 🎶 that’s what it’s about .. God bless you sir
2 years ago this month IIRC, my brother and I saw Knopfler at Chastain in Atlanta. He'd always been one of our top guitar heroes, and one off the few I hadn't seen yet. But, to be perfectly honest, while he definitely had some great moments, his playing has suffered a bit, and what most impressed us about the show, was how subtle and tight his band was. Laying down some of those Celtic grooves he's been into in recent years, those guys were jaw dropping !!
You have a way of breaking these concepts down, better than anyone else I have encountered, so that even musical idiots such as I can make sense of them. Thanks so very much!
Guthrie - Just recently discovered your videos in You Tube. I must say your teaching has reinforced concepts I've suspected for years but didn't know how to go about articulating on the fretboard. Your lessons make lots of sense. As other followers have noted, they a treasure and an inspiration. Unlike many on You Tube, your lessons are not an insult to anyone's intelligence nor a lure or bait to pick pockets, but thorough, complete, and very very encouraging. You a teacher. I'm inspired to pick up my guitar again after many years in the closet. Please keep your lessons coming. Your sincerity is awesome, no need to apologize about having to make a living. It will be my pleasure to help keep your coffee pot going, the lights burning, and lessons coming (just gotta figure out this PyPal thing). I do have one question and would a appreciate a quick response (or comment in your next video): Of your lessons on You Tube, which would 5 or 6, AND IN WHICH ORDER, would you recommend for a structured/rational approach to mastering the basics? I want to get back to playing but would greatly appreciate some direction on where to start. Thank you sir!
carlos alvarez Hey man! Thanks so much for the encouraging words. Means a lot. So these RUclips videos are not meant to be a lesson series in any sequenced order. They are random and meant to draw attention to my other ventures. Artist Works is what I’d recommend for you. It’s an amazing course where I break all of this down in sequence. That is what I ultimately suggest. Thanks man!!
Hell yeah. Congrats on getting to see Mark Knopfler. That's amazing. Thank you for the lesson, even though it's now a Saturday morning lesson. Lol. We'll take em anytime.
Hey Guthrie, I think your lessons are awesome and you're a wonderful teacher... I am currently signed up and taking lessons with your Artistswork course. I signed up because of these free lessons and I want to tell everyone, the course is put together very well and you owe it to yourself to check it out. You will not be disappointed. 😃
Mr. Guthrie you're doing great stuff here. For years I didn't feel like there was any progress on my playing, until I started to dig into Django Reinhardt. Yes, there was progress, but the plateau returned. Now after watching your videos I am starting to connect the dots bro. You're obviously a fantastic player, but I think your humble demeanor is what makes your lessons so awesome. Thanks man.
Mr. Trapp I tried to be able to navigate through the Freatboard but I just did not know where to start. You gave me a great gift with this Video. I am really making progress and I know my guitar learning will be very much positive from now on. Again, thank you very much.
Love it Guthrie, all your lessons are so easy to understand. I can’t wait until I get my laptop going so I can do a private lesson. Thanks for all your time doing this man, it’s helped me and I’m sure thousands of others so much!

These lessons are a great help im starting to see the big picture now, just wish you was playing over a backing track im sure id pick it up quicker. Thanks for another great lesson as always Guthrie cheers
Iam doing practice arpegios for a aprox. 3 weeks on a daily base..i slowly see tons of conection.. even try 1,4,5 progresion training to create melody...this stuf work and i have tons of fun..learned lot from Guthrie videos...like guidelines.. Big Thanks from Slovenija
Thanks Guthrie for putting this out for all of us to use. Theory has always been like math to me and I always hated math! Keep up the good work, & thanks again!
Thanks, Brother! These are the topics most interesting to me and watching you do your thing... to be able to mix up my playing more, using scales, triads, arpeggios, double stops ...etc. Thanks for posting, GT (if I may call you that... seems easier to type; plus it's a pretty cool nickname imho...lol)!
Fantastic exercise! I've never seen that one before.. Can you continue this exercise in the upcoming weeks by showing arpeggios in different CAGED positions (liked u demo'd in the last few minutes)?
Bret Schwartz Thanks man!! This won’t be a lesson series format. To dig deeper, I’d be happy to do a lesson or check out Artist Works. That’s how I make a living :)
Thanks for the lesson. The first few times you ran backwards through the D scale you were playing a G natural, later on you were stopping on a G# (which makes more sense to me as overall the exercise was in A). Am I missing something?

Iam doing practice arpegios for a aprox. 3 weeks on a daily base..i slowly see tons of conection.. even try 1,4,5 progresion training to create melody...this stuf work and i have tons of fun..learned lot from Guthrie videos...like guidelines.. Big Thanks from Slovenija
Thanks Guthrie for putting this out for all of us to use.
Theory has always been like math to me and I always hated math!
Keep up the good work, & thanks again!
Tim Newman Thanks man!! I HATE MATH!! No need for it with the iPhone.
I am stoked to try this lesson on my Axe. Thanks so much Guthrie man (!)
Erol Germann Thanks man!!
That was indeed awesome, thanks Bro!
I am re-watching this, and just realized I modified this lesson, and ended up with my intro music. Thanks, Guthrie
Nice man!!
That's some great information but I'd like to see you use it with a backing track and play a song.
Brilliant approach to learning guitar .
This really helped me to combine arpeggios and scales
John Celeste Thanks man!!
Tone Seeker Thanks a bunch man! Everyone calls me GT ha. Or G Trapp, G Man, Gut, Trapp, it goes on and on haha.
Thanks Guthrie! Have fun in L A brudda!
tomcoryell Thanks man!
Awesome stuff as always!!!
Michael Kates Thanks !!
Man I love u dude, great vibes n positivity always and a great teacher!
Mike Nappi Thanks man!!
@@guthrietrappmusic always brother! We will Skype eventually for sure!!!
Cool video my man. Definitely digging the process.
I have got to figure this stuff out!!! Thank you!!!!
you're awesome man
Brian Ralph Thanks man!!
Great stuff! I enjoy and learn from your lessons. Thank you!
Thanks for the lesson. The first few times you ran backwards through the D scale you were playing a G natural, later on you were stopping on a G# (which makes more sense to me as overall the exercise was in A). Am I missing something?
Geoff mania Thanks man! One was being treated like going to the 4 chord and one was just the straight major scale. That’s where the ear comes in.
Thanks again for another great lesson. Off to the woodshed......
walter higgs Thanks man!!
Nashville must be huge if you have to say East Nashville. Love these videos.
