    Back in 2001 I saw Guthrie with singer Nick something (when they were Filthy Rich) do a set at this hole in the wall in Fairhope AL (Mama Ruex's) and his playing blew my friggin mind, and I remember wondering how one gets to play that good. I had only been playing a few years at that point. And now 17+ years later he's on the internet teaching us his magic. Awesome. So glad I stumbled upon this.

    7:33 - Can be treated as a backdoor dominant, a iv min6 or a ii m7b5 (D7, Am6 or F#m7b5). A melodic minor sounds great over that chord, and of course the F#m7b5 arpeggio sounds killer over the Am as well.

    Guthrie helped me understand things like this:
    World = Key you're playing in
    Neighborhood = Chord Progression
    House = Style of Chord Progression (Blues, Jazz, Funk, etc...)
    Foundation of the House = Full Chord Shapes
    Frame Work = Chord Triads (1,3,5)
    Walls = Arpeggiating the chord
    Decoration = Scale / Mode depending on the style of music

    I gotta say this video is really awesome, it can take some work but I've got tired of just trying to solo over the root chord or the relative minor and always had trouble jumping from chord to cord while improvising a solo. This is very helpful for that.

      While I agree with this statement, there are metal players out there that can shred AND still have great phrasing. Admittedly, they are few and far between but when I think of metal players with amazing phrasing, the first guy that comes to mind is Alex Skolnik. That guy can play a million miles but that doesn't make him a great player. What makes him a great player is he has a great melodic sensibility that is amazing to witness when combined with his amazing technique.

    This is great stuff. I hope to travel to Nashville this year. So many amazing musicians. Thanks for introducing me to Guthrie and Ford. I'm following their stuff now and loving it. Love your channel too Papa. I've learned so much from these videos on how to target notes over chords. Making big progress

    There are few people on RUclips that I love to watch and listen to play guitar, one is Tim Pierce and the other is Guthrie Trapp -- so fluid and everything seems effortless.

    Conocí a Guthrie Trapp en un video con Kenny Vaughan, desde entonces sigo su carrera. Gran sorpresa verlo junto a uno de los mejores maestros en YT. Una valiosa lección. Gracias por compartir su conocimiento. The best name for guitar is Practice Trapp.

    If I recall another insane player, Matt Schofield uses the same technique of playing the scale over the chord changes. Guthrie is one of my all time favorites and this video shows why. Great video, Papa. Thank you.

    Fantastic playing and explanation. I want to get good at this technique. You really have to think to play over chords like that. The challenge makes it fun. I think that's why we all like guitar. The challenge! Guthrie is a great guest to have at the 102!
