Hey guys, I appreciate all the positive comments and encouraging feedback! I will at some point be upgrading my audio situation. These are just quick iPhone videos to get some content out there. Any tech advice is welcome. My video camera has two XLR inputs, but I think I need a mic with a preamp. I tried using an SM-57 on my amp once for another project, but wasn’t able to get a decent volume level at all.
Also, I just wanted to say that these videos are geared to drive attention to my full Artist Works curriculum and my private local and Skype lessons. The AWs school is extremely professional and is shot with 5 camera angles and studio quality audio. It’s amazing how high their bar is set for what we are doing there. They really are a great company that cares about their students and music education!!
The benefit of my private lessons is that I can spend an hour (or more) honing in on your individual needs specifically. Everyone is coming from a slightly different place wether it’s musically or the way they see it and learn. I can taylor my approach to fit any and all of these unique situations. I have been teaching people all over the world and love doing it!
I am a professional guitar player first and foremost and a teacher second. I know that these concepts work because they worked for me! I don’t know much theory, I can’t read music or tab, I don’t even have all of the notes on the finger board memorized. But I do know that the way that I’m seeing this is a very concrete and useful way to learn to become a well rounded guitar player!! It’s what the pros use and rely on every day! I am bypassing all the modes and complicated theory and getting right to what really works and is simple and clear to see and be able to apply to your playing to make music and really know the fingerboard. Just because a scale may technically work over a chord theory wise, does not mean it’s going to sound right in every situation. It’s all about seeing these shapes well enough to then forget about them and move on to the next level. Musicality is the end result and should be your ultimate goal here. This is how you get there. It works. Trust me!
Let me know if I can help in any way.
    Thanks, GT

Guthrie, the above explanation of where you are coming from is so clear, precise and exciting. That last paragraph could be on all your RUclips posts. Under the "SHOW MORE" tab The following are just a few suggestions. 1. It might be a stream of income to sell pdf's of the key features of your posts as a precise view of your fingers isn't always possible in single camera views. I like the simplicity of your content - your personality/humility and the raw musicality really shine. I don't think you need more than a single camera. 2. Short 10 minute videos are the way to go with reference to previous videos & a link. (This needs a bit of organising but may be well worth it). 3. Keep reminding people of where they are headed maybe like a peak preview type thing at the end or near the end of a post. 4. Post your amazing playing occasionally - really short 2 minute-ish check out Lari Bassillio (a master at it) and how she does it or Mateus Asato (but keep it country or in other words keep it Guthrie). 5. Focusrite 212 interface is all you need check out Tonejunkie interview with Michael Britt there the set up is sitting on the desk 2 mics & the red box. I have the Focusrite Claret 2 pre as I have a MacBook pro but the 212 is all you need. 6. Keep it about the Music and the Joy of it - your assignment in life is that thing & you "Smash it." 7. Other people do other stuff better than us and so quickly and easily - But they can never do Guthrie Trapp & His musical adventure. accept the help if it's offered. Keep to your thing. It's Awesome.

I've sent off to book a lesson. I've played guitar for a long time but there's no good teachers where I'm from. Playing any lead playing or improv has been a fricken mystery. This lesson is the 1rst I've seen that's starting to shed a bit of light... I've watched this lesson like 5 times now & I don't fully grasp it yet. But so far I'm grasping it by simply arpegiating through but I havnt been able to see how I would put the meat on the bones so to speak phrasing. I'm getting closer I think. My guess is that this idea some how connects some how with other progressions like possibly a 2 5 1 proression such is common in jazz. Idk it's still a mystery but this lesson is definitely one that has made me want a lesson as I really want to grasp where this is all leading to...

Long ago I didnt know about the caged system but had been using it but just didnt have a name for it. I learned as a beginner 50yr ago to find the notes up the fretboard by the tuning of each string changing every five frets. I love your lessons they are for people who have a good foundation already so I appreciate that.

@@guthrietrappmusic You know this was a great foundational video and you are so right. The learning of guitar is very linear, everything is built upon the last bit you learn as you describe, although I'm surprised how most teachers don't really work that way. It seems a lot more random which is a shame. That being said, I completely understand where you're coming from. For me, I would love to see how you practice these skills to really infuse it into muscle memory. For me, my regimen was taking the CAGED system and playing Chord > Arpeggio > Pentatonic > Scale > Triads for each chord up the neck. The connections between the chords got a little more free form which was where I wasted a lot of time. Maybe you could do a video of explaining your approach to building the muscle memory. Thanks.

Excellent lesson, thank you. My fancy classical music book explained how the flat 7 resolves down to the 3rd, but it's refreshing to hear you apply it musically. My book also said how the 3rd of the dominant leads up to the root of the tonic or 1 chord. Maybe you could show your approach using the 3rd resolving up, just how you did with the flat 7 resolving down. It was easier for me to remember by using the scale degrees, for ex. The 4th in the major scale resolves down to the 3rd (f to e, G7 to C). And the 7th, leading tone resolves up to the octave ex, b to c. Or the 3rd of G7 moving to C, tonic. ☺ They're both a half step apart, and sound smooth... Thank you again. Going to practice what you just showed us. Paz, gracias!

Simao Garcia Thanks a bunch man! I think you may be overthinking it a bit. There’s also a few things you mention here that don’t really work. The 3rd IS in the Dom chord. And the tonic is the 1 of the key you’re in. I’m a little lost here. I can straighten you out if you want to do a lesson. Thanks man!

The mind is a great trickster.
I've been making this whole thing much harder than it really is.
Thanks for helping me see the light.

Donald Butcher It really is! Thanks man!! Out of curiosity, how were you thinking about this?

The dreaded "M" word (modes) the Maj. Scale/w the flat7 when playing over the 5 chord but you explained it so clearly I didn't even think about it that way.
      Thanks again.

Hey Guthrie - awesome stuff man
    Everything is built around triads.
I’ve been fascinated by music theory the last year or two - to me, it doesn’t exist to teach one how to play music or how to solo melodically - to me anyway, it’s a fundamental basis and understanding of the relationships between the notes of western music and an explanation of why things sound the way they do and beyond that the theory (meaning opinion to a lesser extent, for a simplistic, quick explanation) of what sounds good (music vs noise, which is inherently subjective !)
Beyond learning the triads and fingerboard training the ear to identify intervals is essential
If you can’t hear a piece of music and have a solid understanding of what the intervals are that are being played then it’s really hard to learn anything by ear
90% of the stuff I’ve learned is by ear or a combination of ear and watching someone play a piece. But I don’t watch someone play to try and copy it note for note
Rather I listen closely to learn and also to see if something sounds “off” or could be enhanced (ie taking a single note phrase being played and turning it into a 6th or adding a 3rd or an upper extension note etc etc ).
Generally speaking the more I listen and practice the quicker and more accurate my ear becomes at identifying the intervals
Listening to wide varieties and genres really helps to open the horizons on the possibilities.
One mouth two ears listen twice as much as you speak🤣
Recording yourself and playing it back, you’ll quickly see you often hate what just came out as much as most people hate listening to themself talk 🤣
    But I digress
At 12:30 when you talk about the Tritone shape resolving up or down half steps to the flat 7 and major 3 of the next chord in the progression a perfect example of this being used is the main riff in Rock and roll by Led Zeppelin. Blues shuffle in A, in between the riff Page plays to transition from I to IV to V is that tritone lick (C#-G at 11/12 D/G strings). When the riff goes to the IV, D, he moves it down a half step to C-F# (10/11) then for E up to D/G# (12/13).
Awesome stuff man- definitely signing up for private Skype lessons with you man👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
