Guthrie, I've been playing nearly 45 years from a kid. I havent really had any lessons so mostly played just by the the sound without knowing any theory. I thought I'd gone as far as my knowledge would allow. When I heard you playing the first time I became completely remotivated to learn more and now your style of teaching is so practical & meaningful that a light has come on and Im playing again-difference is I now know why I was playing what I was and the fretboard hascompletely opened up for me. Thanks. You're a star and one of my all time favourite guitarists.

This is the first time I've actually understood the concept of what notes to "choose" in a solo...
It's always been randomly through scales...
    Words cannot express my thanks.

  • @guthrietrappmusic

    Disclaimer- I actually strayed from the A D E progression I mention demonstrating over at 12:35. It is actually outlining A D A D A then to E A D A , E A D A , E A D A. Ha! I know thats totally random, but thats what it is if you listen to it.

I enjoy playing in a be-bop stabs because they are so leading. I have no theory, being a couch guitarist but I’ve found these as they inform you, or lead you to resolving the prior chord or note. Two note stabs seem to peal back the underlying structure and they are always close at hand making them easy to find and expose the fretboard patterns. My first time on your channel as you are mentioned or referenced plenty so I thought I’d give you a listen. Great tone and great explanation. Thank you!

Like lots of others have already said - many, many thanks Guthrie for taking the trouble to break down and explain some fundamental aspects of your approach to playing (out of this world sometimes like that intense jam 4-5 years with Brent Mason and the guys on bass and drums - Wow!). I've seen quite a few of your earlier vids, which while very good, were not nearly so 'user friendly' (even with the RUclips slow down function). This one and the one you posted a week or so
earlier have been really excellent. It doesn't get much better than this. Cheers.

My suspicions were confirmed by this and the previous lesson. Thanks a million been at it for many years and just dig your style and your teaching. Love to hear you say, "it's not perfect" keep it human. Thanks Willet

Along the exact same lines of anticipating the III of the upcoming change, I like to notice the root down a half step to Nat 7 connects a I to V turnaround, and the fifth to sixth melody carries a I to IV chord change.
In all those cases, it’s really great the way you point out the ways to look around, then, for the neighboring chord shapes, or fragments of those shapes, to orient on the other side of each change.
(hope that’s not rambling and confusing)

This lesson is subtle but killer.. I mean one just drops a semitone from the flat 7th to the 3rd in the 4 chord yet it makes a massive difference as it so effortlessly leads the listeners ear.. Ive never even considered this and have been playing for 30years but now am very conscious of this and Its already making a massive difference to how I approach soloing

This is a great lesson! Thanks Guthrie! For those who haven't checked out Guthrie's curriculum at ArtistWorks.com, get yourself signed up! He's got a ton of pre-recorded lesson videos and a video exchange platform which is also awesome. It has already made a huge difference in my playing after just a few months. I used to approach improvising by starting with a 7-note scale and then I'd try to pick out the important notes, which ends up being a lot to process if the chords are moving quickly. Instead, Guthrie's curriculum is all about focusing on chord tones and then the rest of the scale follows when you need it. It's a little shift in thought, but the payoff has been big!

Another great lesson and big eye opener for the b7 to maj 3rd pull on the ear....you can close your eyes and listen and hear the changes easily! So cool! Your lessons are very helpful and super clear to understand. please keep this up! Hey it would be great to go over some simple licks and phrasing to help "connect" the shapes together so they sound more like lead licks and not just 1s, 3s, and 5s....like that exercise you showed of playing the 1, 3 and 5 is awesome (Ive tried it and it works amazing!) but I mean more how you connect it all together to sound like lead licks and not just arpeggios of chords.

Great lesson. They finally got my info straightened out and I got signed up at ArtistWorks. I just saw a video of Norman:s Rare Guitars and the Scottish dude was playing a National Tricone and You, Brett PapaStach , and Tim Pierce were in the background just a few hours ago. Your feet must be as fast as your fingers, Nike needs to sponsor you. You are one busy Dude. Thanks.

Wow man, I really appreciate this. Using the b7 of a I to move seamlessly to the maj3 of the IV...not sure why I never discovered that but it was very helpful. Thank you!

So (last part of video EAEAE etc) E to flat 7(D) DOWN! to C#(3rd of A).....the A to flat7(G) UP UP UP! to G#!(3rd of E)...........the down to,and up to is the crucial bit missing, but I have it now. Descending into A and Rising into E. May help someone out there. Genius fretboard movement is difficult to get into words...but keep up the lessons they're priceless, thanks again
