Two guys that have caught my ear due to their fluidity and catalog of music styles and their melodic expertise would be JOSH SMITH and GUTHRIE TRAPP...and this is only in the last couple of years...before that yeah you could ring out the influences of the all the greats, but these two guys have multiple styles blended with excellent rhythm, fluidity and depth of knowledge. Great players and seem to be humble and great guys!

I highly recommend getting a zoom lesson with Guthrie. I just had one yesterday and It was great! It gets recorded so you have it forever and can break it down a section at a time. There is so much that he covers in an hour it is unbelievable. I've got so much to work on now!!! I will be busy for the next year I'm sure.

Like someone else on here said, even if it's just one little idea, it has elevated my playing and gotten me out of my rut of the same old stuff I always play.

Thank you Guthrie for taking pride in your creative vibration and for being actively connected and engaged with your spirit as a guitarist. There are intangibles in playing for those who are naturally gifted. I see and hear what you're doing and even though you're light years removed from what's under my fingers, I'm still truly free at the level I'm at...because of my ear, but also because of something other people either admire or resent, depending. The intangible. You Guthrie, you remind me of what's possible. I hear and feel and see how awesomely you combine spirit and technique. Plus, I love me some of each of those four chordal worlds you just let rip in. As odd bed fellows go, man do you ever feel like Tribe where spirit and ear and heart are concerned. Thank you for every spec of what you bring. What a gift.

This is the most important lesson you’ve given yet. The four colors is brilliant. This is the first lesson you should give to intermediate players, players who know the basics up to beginning to know CAGED. Knowing the colors snaps chords into focus. It’s the moment where the learner moves from knowing what the chords are to HOW they work. This is the moment when heads explode. GREAT LESSON!!! After learning this, the rest is little decorations and flair ... we’ve got the meat and potatoes down. Again, GREAT LESSON!

I have to fully agree. 40+ years of noodling was tossed on its head by these examples, and as a musically “illiterate” player, it makes sense in a way that really inspires and motivates. I have always played from “heart”, but now I can begin to see why things “feel” the way they do within the language of the fretboard. This was my first visit to this channel and I am grateful to have landed here rather than settling my butt into the lounger to zone out on sportsball or something. Time to practice!

GT, when you previously explained the Dominant 7th as simply dropping the one a whole step I immediately started using that Idea and building chord substitutions into my playing.
Now with this information on the four sounds I have more tools to use to help me visualize the caged shapes and create tonal flavor to my improvising and rythm playing.
By the time I sit down with your artistworks Material I will have a solid foundation and be better able to digest the material and improve as a guitarist.
Thanks for outlining this and continually improving to lesson to suit the needs you see in your students.

Guthrie……thank you for posting these lessons! I always glean some little part of your teaching. At 66 years of age, I have been dinking around with basic chords etc., and it is satisfying to understand the concepts behind what advanced players are actually doing when playing all over the neck of the guitar. Even though I will never play the advanced techniques that you demonstrate, I can enjoy what I play at my level more. Blessings,

I've been playing guitar for 36 years. I did Guthrie's course on artist works and it really changed everything for me. Couldn't recommend it enough. If the technical (Lydian superimposed hydrogenated upside down scales) waffle is not for you (which it isn't for me) then Guthrie talks much more about sounds - it's more simple and, to me anyway, much more affective.

Jethro: "Homer, we've been playing music together for over 30 years, and I wonder if you have ever noticed that when I play the mandolin, I go up and down and across the fingerboard, I use all the notes, I explore all the melodic and harmonic possibilities. But you've got a death grip on that same old 'C' chord on the guitar, and that's all you ever play."

Guthrie i mapped out a chord progression of A Amaj7 Adom7 to D to Dm A to Edom7 and worked on stabbing the chord then using the arpeggio to outline that sound or even grabbed just one note like the flat 3rd of D on the solo just highlight the change from D to Dm. Very quickly you can really make very melodic sounds doings this

Or come up with a 2-3 chord progression that has a mix of major and minor maybe and practice over that loop? Looping one ambient chord is always fun for driving the wife crazy!
