Was The Haunted Mansion a Good Movie?

  • Hey guys, welcome to another video. This one is coming to you from my totally regular filming spot.
Today, inspired by the news broken by Offhand Disney last week I decided to cover The Haunted Mansion movie from 2003. Lots of people have named this movie as one of Disney's weaker films but at the same time I personally grew up loving it so I wanted to talk about it and give you my opinion. I know you didn't ask for my opinion on a 27 year old Eddie Murphy vehicle based on a theme park ride but this, dear viewer, is one of the hazards of being a subscriber of mine.
I'd love to know what you guys think of this one. I certainly don't think it's a perfect film, but I also think it's stronger in certain areas that it doesn't really get credit for. But it's been well established in past videos that I know very little and am often wrong so feel free to express that in the comments down below.
As always, I'm very grateful to you all for being here and can't wait to hang out with you again in the next video!

I have really loved this movie as a child, it's so nostalgic for me to see it again, the only thing apart from the set design and costumes which i have really enjoyed was the story about Elizabeth and Master Gracey, i wish they would have focused a bit more on their story.

I loved this movie as a kid, I love this movie as an adult. It’s a good, whimsical, and yet scary time. The themes are incredibly interesting and perfect for kids and adults because as a kid you understand everything that’s going on but as an adult you understand that unspoken themes and messages that kids just don’t get. An example Ramsley didn’t want Edward to marry Elizabeth kids and adults understand that but as an adult you know Ramsley doesn’t want Edward to marry a mixed race woman.

My mom insisted we watch it on Halloween and it honestly still makes me laugh. There are definitely some dark themes in there that I never understood as a kid that's for sure. All in all, I think it's a really interesting type of movie to come out of Disney.

I recently watched this movie for the first time. The first time I saw the ending, I thought the Evers family had either died or unknowingly became trapped in between the realms of the living and dead. They were the lone vehicle on that long stretch of road that seemingly had no end in sight, and had Madame Leota and the singing busts along for the ride. Maybe my horror movie brain took over, and didn’t let the ending process at face value lol.

What I never understood is how Ramsley was able to control ghosts? Also the fact that heaven and hell are included in the movie for no reason when that isnt ever mentioned in the ride? Not only does that add a WAY different feel, but it also derails the end of the movie into complete random nonsense (like why hell even opened in the first place?) Not to mention why the ghosts in the graveyard who presumably died 100s of years before the curse are trapped as well?
Overall I'd agree that this movie does get a bad rep, as it has a lot of enjoyable aspects to it. Also external sources pretty much confirm that Elizabeth was a "servant" and Ramsley didnt approve of their love.

I've always thought that, Ramsey killing Elizabeth was about how happy Master Gracey was with her. Maybe he hated the fact that they were in love and happy, is what triggered him to kill her. Throughout the whole movie it seemed like his character pretty much was in total control of every ghost in the mansion, him killing her, in turn Gracey killed himself, which put a curse on the mansion, which gave him total control of the ghosts.

2003: throughs Easter eggs in your face without in-story reason, makes a joke about the things in the ride, like Madame Leota being just being a head in a ball, just speaks in riddles even when not reciting an incantation. That is just one example, among too many flaws.

This movie was part of my childhood. For all its faults I still honestly love it. I always thought that it was a decent film adaptation of the ride, though maybe that’s because I never had too much of an attachment to the Haunted Mansion (I was always a Pirates of the Caribbean guy). I think the hate that this movie gets, while understandable is a bit too much. I don’t think it’s the best film adaptation of a Disneyland ride (that’s still obviously Pirates of the Caribbean) but it’s definitely not the worst (that honor belongs to the Country Bears movie). According to the lore, the Evers family shouldn't have to worry about property taxes (21:08). Disney actually has an entire backstory of the structure itself and surrounding real estate (dating back to when the Disneyland ride first opened). Part of it reveals that when the original owner bought the sprawling lands and built the mansion, he gifted the construction of a huge, new courthouse to the County and, in exchange, property taxes on his real estate were waived in perpetuity. This concept actually exists in Law (although you never truly see it in real life); it's called allodial title. Additionally, the owner specified a restriction in the real estate deed that requires presentation of the original document for a transfer of title ("ownership"). Subsequently, the original owner mysteriously disappeared one day and nobody has ever discovered where the deed is stashed. The entangled, clouded title (who actually owns it?) arising from the deed and lack of government ability to foreclose for nonpayment of taxes are the main reasons why the property sits abandoned, in stasis essentially. The scenario's realism (or lack thereof) can be debated but I always thought it was so cool that the imagineers thought all this out. Incidentally, the backstory gives the reason for the big cemetery right next to the mansion too. Among his other enterprises, the mansion's original owner was a smuggler (one of the sources of his immense wealth). The cemetery would be empty of the living at night, non-smuggling-related people wouldn't be inclined to hang around a giant burial ground, and it stretched down to the banks of the bayou, which was used to transport the illicit goods to and from the property.

I would like to offer another perspective that is actually based on historical facts. There once lived a white man named Mr. Kelly (sorry I do not know his first name) who tried to enter into the society class after making a fortune. The people who made up this society class rejected his attempts as he was “new money” while they were all “old money”. This man did have a daughter named Grace who had a career as an actress. She was in the movie Rear Window with James Steward. She of course is famous for giving up her acting career to marry a real life prince. It was only after she had married the prince that her father was accepted into the society class. At least I heard that they accepted him. Everything I wrote about was something I heard about from old news clips before there was any internet available. Please feel free to fact check the information I provided here rather than just accepting my word for it.

The Haunted Mansion (2003): I did not care much for the plot nor the casting. Loved the special effects, set pieces, costuming, and production design (I would pay to have the mausoleum installed in my backyard if I had the money). I would rate it as a D+/C- at best. In defense of the screenwriter, the story of the attraction itself and how it came to be is very disjointed and schizophrenic. Disney always strove to “tell a story” in his attractions. There were two camps of thought when it came to the ride’s development: the scary camp which included Ken Anderson, Rolly Crump, and Claude Coates; and the whimsical camp with Marc Davis and Xavier Atencio. Many storylines were developed for the Mansion but there was never a clear frontrunner. Because of this “all over the map” quality of the Mansion’s backstory and whether to make it scary vs. funny, one ends up with an attraction with an inconsistent vibe. Given that, it’s no wonder the screenwriter had problems distilling it all down into a cohesive story. The next attempt at tackling this iconic attraction will open in theaters in July 2023. While Guillermo del Toro was supposed to lead this new production, his involvement has been minimal. Perhaps since there are so many stories behind the Mansion they need to take an “Everything Everywhere All At Once” approach and develop ALL of the original storylines and weave them together into a Haunted Mansion Multiverse...

Since it was created by WDI, I actually consider it to be the closest thing to a definitive canon we have for the Mansion. There’s also a super cute graphic novel, “Frights of Fancy” which I also recommend checking out if you get a chance!

You think the climax scene in THIS was intense? How about the video game version where the butler tells you that everything goes ro the worms in the end, then transforms into a gaint kaiju sized worm demon, comming iut a crack to hell and fights you to the..well..I guess not death. He also knocks all your magic crystals from your lantern (not the same story as the movie obviously..its actually using the groundkeeper seen on the ride) and you need to shove a protesting Madam Leona into it to take the bastard butler down!
