    Coming from a Mac user that's migrated my djing production from a PC using Acid, this video singlehandedly sold me on getting Logic Pro X. I've been looking for 6 months on what's a great beat stretcher. Acid uses the simple Elastique method (marking your own beats) which has worked for many years and Ableton which is overly fiddly for produced dj sets in 'arrangement' view - the others don't seem to add this functionality in a user-friendly way. Trust Apple to do it built in with no effort at all, and it's customisable after the fact.Thanks dancetech, subscribed.

I can only get it to playback the audio normally by turning the whole thing off, which defeats the object because it's not aligned to the grid.

    @ dancetech You mentioned early on that there are two ways to do this - map your audio to a fixed tempo or map you tempo to the audio, which may or may not vary in tempo. Your video only delved into the former i.e fix a tempo and allow the audio to warp itself to hit the beats. I'm really interested to know how you can do the latter. I like to import audio of songs i like and then copy them. Most of my songs are from the 70's so no click track - recorded live etc. . At the moment i have to import an audio file of the song and then ste tempo changes so that transients etc. hit the grid. It takes ages. Can you please help me with this?

    Hey this vid is great, but I'm searching desperately for how to do the reverse: I played in a beat as audio (not as a loop) from LoopDrum app, then recorded keys & vocals on separate tracks. I want Logic to recognize the tempo of the loop drum audio so I can edit on a grid. per LoopDrum it's 110, but on closer analysis the tempo is about 108.8 BPM. My problem: I can't get Logic to change to the tempo tho I have it set to "Adapt tempo" I don't want to re-import and re-record the percussion track, now that I've learned I have to set to on+align bars. • @dancetech
      @dancetech  2 года назад

      it'll work IF the music has a solid repeating beat, if not then Smart Temp cant work. You're only option that might work is to trim a perfect loop from the playing, 4 or 8 bars, adjust the project tempo to fit that loop, then you have derived the basic rough tempo of the playing (assuming the players keeps good time) then use FLEX to try and force the entire length of playing audio to that fixed tempo derived from the loop.
      If you want to send me the audio i'll try and do it on video and show you if it can be done, and if it can be done the video will show you how to do it for future reference.
      If you want to send the file over, reply here and i'll drop give you an email to send it to

    Hello! 1 question please! :) I am in the process of "fixing" all the beats on my older disco/rock/live tracks that don't keep a steady beat (have drifting tempo), so that they're all easily "mixable" with each other - and with newer tracks that have steady beats (as they are made with software, and not a live recording where the drummer keeps an approximate tempo). So far it's going great using smart tempo (although some tracks are quite time-consuming as Logic hasn't identified the correct downbeats' start and the beat markers that it has placed need manual dragging).
    Now, I have noticed something that I think must be a bug in Logic, and it's really annoying as I have to start a track's fixing over and over everytime this happens. UUURRRGHH. Please let me know if there's some kind of setting that I have to select so that this stops happening as it would really save me a lot of time.
    When I've finished checking (and manually correcting, if needed) that all the beat markers have been placed in the correct places, in the Smart Tempo editor window, I then bounce the track (CMD+B) in order to export an mp3. I then import the new/"fixed" track into my Serato DJ (DJing software) to analyze it and then set my beatgrid markers there. I then play it back in Serato to confirm that all the beatgrid lines are indeed on-the-beat. 8 of 10 tracks have been perfectly fixed! :) But, in the odd occasion that a beat or 2 are off the beatgrid lines, I just go back to the track in Logic to fix that/those specific area/s. (I have NOT closed the Logic project in the meanwhile - until I have verified that all the beats are perfectly aligned to the beatgrid in Serato). BUT, the problem is that when I double-click the audio file in Logic (to enter the Editor -> Smart Tempo tab again, to fix those areas), Logic WILL NOT just open the Editor window that was open a couplee of minutes ago, so that I can just pick up from where I left it and just continue my editing!!! Instead it gives me this "horrendous" message that says "This file contains the tempo at which it was ORIGINALLY recorded. Click "edit" only if you wish the file to receive a Smart Tempo analysis, REPLACING THE ORIGINAL TEMPO"!!!! And there's no other option other than to click on the "Edit" button in order to (re-)enter the Smart Tempo editor!!! WTF is its problem?? Is this a bug??
    Needless to say that if I click on Edit to re-enter the Smart Tempo editor window and correct 1-2 areas ONLY, EVERYTHING I had been doing up to that point is LOST. the beat markers are in the ORIGINAL positions that they were BEFORE I had fixed their positions!! This means that I have to start ALL OVER AGAIN!!
    This is REALLY frustrating!! Please tell me that there's some option to click so that this stops happening!
    Thank you for your time & help!! :) :)

      @@dancetech actually i just saw that i can go in and out of the smart tempo window, as long as i dont apply a limiter! I just edited another track's smart tempo markers, when I was done i closed the edit window and was in my main project window. I double-clicked on the audio track again, and no problem, I was back inside the editor (everything was just as I had left them). But then I went back out, applied a stereo limiter (right clicked on audio wave file -> selection based processing -> limiter -> stereo) and when the limiter had been applied, I tried to double click again on the wave file to re-enter the smart tempo editor window... NO CAN DO! Same shit! So it looks like a bug in Logic. RIDICULOUS. (Unless you have a solution for me?)

    • @dancetech

      @@nounix apply the limiting after the bounce down? I don't think it's a bug; applying selection based processing changes the original file

    • @nounix
      @nounix 4 года назад

      @@dancetech the limiting changes the volume output of the track - it doesn't (or shouldnt, as i understand it) change the beat markers. I mean, everything should stay as was; it just all gets louder.. No? (And, no, when I apply a limiter BEFORE I bounce/export the track! So if you try add any track to logic, double click on the track to enter the editor, fiddle around with the beat markers any way you want - something that you'll remember you did so that you can see if it's still there later), then close the editor window to return to the main logic window. Then if you double click on the audio file again, you'll be able to enter the editor again and see that your marker-changes are still as you left them. Then, exit the editor window again. Then apply a stereo limiter to the track. Then, you'll see that if you double-cliick on the track again to go to your editor window again, it will not allow you to! It will only give you the option to press the Edit button to go into the editor. If you do you will see that all your changes to the beat markers have been disregarded (as if you never made them!) so you'll have to do the work all over again!! CRAZY!

    I don't think this works unless the audio already has tempo data.

  • @nounix
    @nounix 5 лет назад +1

    Hello! Great video! :) :)
    I need to import old tracks and just "fix" their beat-lines so that the beats don't drift off the beatgrid. And then export the file as a new, "corrected" version of the original track. So, say, i import a disco track (or a live track) whose tempo is, approximately, 126 bpm (as it wasn't made using software, the drummer is never really "on" the beat).
    So I want to do is quickly import the final tracks into the LPX window, have LPX analyze the downbeats (transients?), and then snap them to their "correct" quantize locations/grid bars (in whatever tempo I choose: maybe also at 126 bpm - exactly - or even to make a whole new version at 110 bpm. Again, exactly, at 110 bpm). And finally export the new, "corrected" track that each beat throughout it sits perfectly at the correct grid positions. :)
    How do I do that?
    In your video it's unclear if the tracks that you imported (which had already saved info in them which you chose not to import) had saved info which would positioned in the correct beatgrid positions, and whether they didn't have a drifting tempo to begin with. So I can't understand whether I just follow your video at certain points, while ignoring some entire parts of your video; or whether it's a different process for what I'm trying to do).
    Meaning, with this method can I just drop any old track into LPX and it will automatically, and correctly, correct all the beats in it?? If yes, what if LPX has made mistakes? Can I then manually correct them?

    • @dancetech

      @@dancetech i have 2 tracks, one is the acapella and the other is the instrumental. They are EXACTLY the same length. If you place the one on top of the other they will play in perfect sync (although their tempo is drifting as its an old track so that's why I'm trying to fix my them both together, so that they REMAIN in perfect sync with each other, but also them to both be perfectly positioned on the beatgrid). I followed your import instructions and settings, but when i import them together, something weird happens and one is shorter than the other (and of course they're completely out of sync now...). It seems like LPX cannot detect the beats' positions (where the beat WERE) in the acapella and will not place the acapella correctly. Isn't there a way to "tell" LPX to take the instrumental track as a "guide", and to "whatever you do to the instrumental file/track, do the exact same to the acapella track"? I can't see how else I'm going to do this otherwise...
