  • How to TEMPO MAP in Logic Pro X 10.4 - SMART TEMPO
    In this video we look at how you can force the DAW to follow your drifting tempo in your midi / audio performance. This is a great DAW feature if you are working with a sloppy drummer. It's also great if you just want to have the tempo map perfectly to your intro accelerando, or your outro deaccelerando.
    Smart tempo was introduced in Logic Pro X 10.4 and is really a helpful audio tool. Simple to use and yields very good results. Hope you enjoy the video!

    How did u record the shaker into the beat

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад +1

      Hey Kahyyam, I show that in the video. I didn't record to any metronome. I just recorded free-style (rubato) without any defined metronome click. Then used the Logic function Smart Tempo to create a tempo map and adjust tempo to what I played. This is useful if you want to play without metronome and have a more "free" tempo. Usually it's used in orchestral music, filmscoring etc. At the end you can hear it's a drifting tempo, and the "drummer" follows my free shaker tempo. Hope the info helps. Thanks for writing!

    Thank you so much for showing this feature, Mattias! I've never heard before, but it looks quite useful - after watching this video I needed to put down orchestral part from the audio, and this smart tempo facility was the first thing I thought :) Does it have a possibility to extract something like tempo envelope or automation curve from the existing audio clip or it is more for a live playing, like you've shown? I think, it could be very handy to use it for every genre with floating tempo, varying rhythm, as it's quite a big amount of work to guess every single tempo change manually.
    Oh, I'm a little bit under the heap of different tasks again now, it's spring holidays time here in Russia (late in February some kind of man's day and now it's women's day), flat construction and all this. But little return to the music a little bit now. It's always so pity to pass the spring without music, I think, this is the season absolutely devoted to music, art and all the inspiring things. So I must return to it, definitely :)

    • @MattiasHolmgren

      Hi Alexey, good to see you! The adaptive tempo in Logic can be really useful, especially when working with more free tempo recordings. But in reality I never use this mode myself. That said I wanted to showcase the possibility to those recording bands and other artists (which I rarely do anymore).
      The tempo curve can not be converted to other automation as far as I know.
      I've tried to copy a tempo-curve to a volume-automation but obviously it doesn't work. It just pastes the automation into the tempo lane. So it's kind of it's own thing entirely. Would be cool as you mentioned to use this curve for other purpose (like regular automation).
      Yeah spring usually is full of inspiration. I've written tons of melodies. Mostly by playing the piano and singing. But haven't recorded too much. Wish you an inspiring evening over in Russia! HOpe you get to dive into the music soon Alexey!

Yes, indeed, it looks so useful for free playing recordings and probably not so first-class instrument for absolutely-exact precise electronics :) Until you start editing those hybrid snippet in the breakdown, haha) But yes, very interesting and fresh feature in general, it's hard to come up with something new in terms of DAW these days, so that's good. Hope it would be developed further.
      Oh yes, I've also collected a bunch of scratches these days, especially when returning from running in the park =) Forest makes me create! =) So yes, it's just to find enough time to put it all down to something. Anyway, hope the creation influence won't leave us!) Have a nice week!

    This almost answers my question. How would you even out on inconsistent tempo? Let's say you wanted your keyboard region to not speed up and slow down but stay at a specific constant tempo. I'm asking because I have a vocal track where the artist back phrases and throws off the tempo of the rest of the piece.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад +1

      Hi David, oh that's a though one. I guess you have to work with transient onsets and get your hands dirty and edit the keyboard (or vocal) track manually. With Flex Edit it's quite easy to move phrases around. ;) Sometimes it can sound aweful, but most of the time it works out great.

    Hi Mattias I’ve mapped the tempo of my session to an acoustic guitar track. Then I added MIDI drums and bass. I flattened out the tempo changes slightly so they’re not as extreme. I then rerecorded the acoustic guitar. Now I’m trying to do acoustic double of this track, but I can’t get the second acoustic guitar to line up with the other guitar track or the MIDI parts in a way that is clean and precise enough. Would you have any recommendations? Thank you

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 года назад

      Hi Patrick. Is there a reason you don't record with a metronome first off? I read you even re-recorded the acoustic guitar again on the tempo-map created from your first acoustic guitar. Why not just re-record the whole thing from scratch, but this time you use a metronome and play against that. That's what I would do. It's probably what saves the most amount of time, if you notice there is a big problem adding new tracks to an already floating tempo. That's probably the only recommendation I can give for this question. It's always best to begin with a solid "backbone". It saves time and headache. 😀
      The only time I would use smart tempo is when I record solo piano pieces (maybe with some rubato / accelerando / ritardando), and later realize I want to add some programmed midi on top.
      Back in the day of analog tapes, we used to record albums without metronome. I think we did the two first Embracing albums "I bear the burden of time" & "Dreams left behind" without metronome and it was much harder to layer guitars when drums where not nailed to a metronome. 🌞

    I've been trying to figure out if I can record guitar parts with my drums playing and have Smart Tempo tighten some simple parts when needed? But some videos say Logic won't work if there is ANY time based things playing... even click. Why would Apple handicap a great feature like this if true? I'm sure it's just a bit of programming to make it work that way too.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад +2

      Hi Eric. You use Flex Edit to tighten guitar parts up against the drums. Even if it's live drum audio recordings. Just use Flex Edit for all that kind of stuff. It works great most of the time.

    Can we do this with incoming midi ? And possibly send the tempo right back out in real time ? I have analog LFO sent to clock in on Beatstep Pro. Which converts it to midi. I want to record the tempo in real time and sync internal and external tempo clock.
    So if I slow down the analog clock, beatstep pro slows down, I want logic to respond and to change internal and external effects, while recording.... Any idea how? Thanks

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад

      Hi Matt, unfortunately this Smart Tempo only listens to incoming audio signal.
      I guess, what you are looking for is rather midi clock MTC, MMC. Check Logic Preferences. And also right click the grey area beside the transport bar and select "Customize control bar..."->and activate Modes / Functions - SYNC. This will make a sync button appear on the interface which will ease up your sync-controls. This is not something I work with though since I personally always see the DAW as the master clock. Bitwig Studio is great for working with hardware instruments. ;)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  Год назад

      Yes midi will always follow the tempo mapping since it's just data on a grid basically, and that grid can expand / contract.... It's a bit trickier with audio but with flex audio it works (for the most part) but does often require a little bit of editing.

    Hello! 1 question please! :) I am in the process of "fixing" all the beats on my older disco/rock/live tracks that don't keep a steady beat (have drifting tempo), so that they're all easily "mixable" with each other - and with newer tracks that have steady beats (as they are made with software, and not a live recording where the drummer keeps an approximate tempo). So far it's going great using smart tempo (although some tracks are quite time-consuming as Logic hasn't identified the correct downbeats' start and the beat markers that it has placed need manual dragging).
    Now, I have noticed something that I think must be a bug in Logic, and it's really annoying as I have to start a track's fixing over and over everytime this happens. UUURRRGHH. Please let me know if there's some kind of setting that I have to select so that this stops happening as it would really save me a lot of time.
    When I've finished checking (and manually correcting, if needed) that all the beat markers have been placed in the correct places, in the Smart Tempo editor window, I then bounce the track (CMD+B) in order to export an mp3. I then import the new/"fixed" track into my Serato DJ (DJing software) to analyze it and then set my beatgrid markers there. I then play it back in Serato to confirm that all the beatgrid lines are indeed on-the-beat. 8 of 10 tracks have been perfectly fixed! :) But, in the odd occasion that a beat or 2 are off the beatgrid lines, I just go back to the track in Logic to fix that/those specific area/s. (I have NOT closed the Logic project in the meanwhile - until I have verified that all the beats are perfectly aligned to the beatgrid in Serato). BUT, the problem is that when I double-click the audio file in Logic (to enter the Editor -> Smart Tempo tab again, to fix those areas), Logic WILL NOT just open the Editor window that was open a couplee of minutes ago, so that I can just pick up from where I left it and just continue my editing!!! Instead it gives me this "horrendous" message that says "This file contains the tempo at which it was ORIGINALLY recorded. Click "edit" only if you wish the file to receive a Smart Tempo analysis, REPLACING THE ORIGINAL TEMPO"!!!! And there's no other option other than to click on the "Edit" button in order to (re-)enter the Smart Tempo editor!!! WTF is its problem?? Is this a bug??
    Needless to say that if I click on Edit to re-enter the Smart Tempo editor window and correct 1-2 areas ONLY, EVERYTHING I had been doing up to that point is LOST. the beat markers are in the ORIGINAL positions that they were BEFORE I had fixed their positions!! This means that I have to start ALL OVER AGAIN!!
    This is REALLY frustrating!! Please tell me that there's some option to click so that this stops happening!
    Thank you for your time & help!! :) :)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад +1

      Sorry, I guess you have worked with this Smart Tempo feature a ton more than I do. I can't recall, but I probably mentioned in the video that this is a rare function I almost never touch. Since I either record to metronome, or I don't. And if I don't record to metronome it's intentional and the rest of the track will be recorded same procedure.
      I hope you get this sorted out, email Apple support about the issue since it's probably a bug.
      Again, sorry for not being able to help out. But this is a VERY "niche" function so I rarely touch it. 🌞

    Mattias: Great videos. I have a problem using smart tempo sometimes. I often put down a guitar track using Adapt Tempo, the track gets analyzed at about 150 bpm . . but when I add a drummer, it cuts it in half to only 75 bpm. Obviously, the drum track seems too slow or puny at that tempo. How do I get the drummer to play at the guitar tempo of 150 or so? I don't want to change the tempo of the guitar . . just have the drummer play at double the tempo it keeps giving me. Thanks for your help.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 года назад

      Hi Edward, If I understand your problem correctly the only solution I can think of is to freeze that drummer track down into midi. 1.Right-click the drum-region.
      2. Select Convert -> Conver to midi region.
      Now when the drums is in midi you can easily time-compress it to be double speed.
      Just drag the rightmost handle (rightmost end of the clip) while holding ALT. Drag it to half the size of the original clip. This will compress the time so it becomes double speed.
      Let me know if that works out for you.
      I just tried clapping in a recording and it analyzed ADAPT tempo to around 107-110 BPM. If I throw in a drummer track it will play the drums 4/4 beat and follow my clapped tempo. I don't get halftime feel on the drums. But it's very hard to really know where the problem is without seeing your actual recorded gutiar track (Logic Project)
      But please try the above and see if that solves your problem.
      Cheers,
      // Mattias

      Hmmm . . I don't have an ALT key on my MacBook Pro. I tried using control, and option, and command but all I got was half of the region, but still playing at the original beat. Sorry . . I'm probably not explaining myself. I think my problem was that I didn't go to KEEP when I recorded the second track . . the new track might have changed the tempo. But I think I may be getting things confused a bit as I'm in the middle of trying to help a friend make an album and we've recorded 16 songs and I'm trying to mix several at the same time . . . it fries my brain I think! Still . . I appreciate your speedy reply. Great to know someone cares. And . . after I mixed the song at the slower drum tempo, when we add bass it fills in the gaps nicely . . . I think it sounds great . . . but being able to make the drums double the tempo would be a nice tool to know how to do.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 года назад +1

      @@FlyFrijole I feel the frustration. ALT = OPTION key. Yes if you have ADAPT and that project setting option to follow imported files it will change tempo as frequently as you import files. You need to indeed change these options when you are satisfied with "one imported files tempo". And change your project to KEEP so it doesn't change the tempo later down the line. If you render the drummer down to midi like I explained you can indeed compress / expand the midi. The midi will follow the tempo map. It might / might not sound good. As I explained you somtimes need to go in to that first imported file and make sure the onsets are correct for the mapped tempo. With onsets I mean "downbeats" = orange lines. Good luck Edward. Again, I feel the frustration. Recommend the client to record to metronome. ;)

    Is there a possibility to use the smart tempo if I import a soundfile that fluctuate in tempo, and not as you did record it in logic?
    Say I got a bass and guitar background that was not recorded to a metronome and therefore drift between 100-120 bpm (Really bad stringplayer :) ) and I want to get the metronome follow their playing so I can use that to either set to one tempo or like you showed have the auto drummer follow.

      Yes go to File -> Project Settings -> Smart Tempo. Look after "Set imported audio files to" = ON. It sometimes works directly, sometimes you need to tweak the onsets of the smart tempo detected points. But it should get you started.

      Hi Loren, Smart Tempo is for mapping against tempo changes and variations. It does a pretty good job. The gradual steps density maxes out at 1/32 steps for a tempo curve between any two value-points, but I think that's well enough. It's not a perfect solution, but I found it works pretty well for most situations. I don't use this function that much in my own work. No Bitwig does not have this feature yet. It shines in other areas. ☀️☕️

      @@MattiasHolmgren yes it does if I could somehow use both on a project I'd be very happy.

    Hi Mattias, great video. I went ahead and started recording a song with a set tempo (101 bpm), now i usually don't like playing to a metronome, but i did for this tune. OK.
    So now I have a section of the song where I don't want the tempo to be 101 anymore. I can count it out, but I really can't figure out a way to get logic to follow my tempo and then start on beat 1 (and then continue on in 101 bpm).

    Do you have any tips/solutions?

      Hi Dainis, tough question. When I need a section in Logic with free tempo / rubato. I turn off the metronome and play freely for some time (it's often at the end of a track though). If I need to readjust so that the next part starts on a 1:beat of a bar, I would change time signature to 1/4 (for as much as needed before the next section starts) and adjust the tempo at the very end so that I get a beat 1 of a 4/4 going into the new part at a good location. Maybe I can show this in an upcoming video or live stream. Dunno what the title should be though. ;D Thanks for writing Dainis.

    What you are doing is not an accelerando, it is instead increasing the tempo in steps. An accelerando is a continuous increase in tempo.

      Hmm. Right. The target purpose is to accelerate smoothly and its perceived that way. In a DAW its always steps since its digital. 😋 You can turn the square Jump into a curve but Its still going to be quantized increased. But who cares as its perceived as a gradual smooth ramp. 😄

      @@MattiasHolmgren Yes. I found a possibility to at least have more steps Edit / Tempo / Tempo operations, you can realize it then with 32 steps, which should be good enough in most situations to not hear any steps and have a wide enough range.

      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад

      @@nilsfrederking62 yeah I think the gradual steps density maxes out at 1/32 steps for a tempo curve between two value-points. You can also drag the nodes and they become curved. Which makes it easy to edit a gradual rise / fall in tempo.

    Why cant you show us how its done instead of that it can be done
    Eg. record an acoustic guitar and show us how to find the bpm

    • @MattiasHolmgren

      I did show how it works at 02:00 🌞 I did record a keyboard line and showed how smart tempo followed my tempo. Maybe I can make a sequel and show it when recording an acoustic instrument (guitar / piano) and show how Smart Tempo will create a tempo curve following that recording.
