Estimating Higher (Second) Order Models in smartPLS

In partial least squares structural path modelling, the hierarchical component models (HCMs) (also known as Higher-Order Model or second-order models) have become a popular choice for researchers. However, current approaches to estimate the HCM are ambiguous.
My very good friend and an upcoming star/expert in PLS Jacky Cheah has kindly agreed to talk to us about five different approaches (repeated indicator, two types of two-stage, hybrid, and improved repeated indicator) with two different estimation modes (Mode A and Mode B ) when modelling a HCM. Watch Jacky discuss these approaches and the reasoning behind them.
Thanks so much to both of the Profs. It is very informative for me who was using HCM, I used repeated in a year ago. But now I am double checking so with this updated knowledge, I can do my supplementary or robust check analysis. God bless both!

I really enjoyed your RUclips Channel as I am doing my PhD study and this helps a lot. I have a small query which I thought I should ask you or someone who can answer.
My research model consists of three types of HOCs: reflective- Reflective, reflective-formative and formative-formative. I am interested in using a two-stage embedded way to assess my HO model. In stage one, I did all validity assessments for the measurement model, but now I am stuck in stage two because of following (1) In stage 1 my understanding was I do not need to consider higher-order constructs when assessing measurement model. i.e. Ignore all second-order reflective and formative constructs. Is my understanding is correct? (2) In stage 2 my understanding was, we use the normal approach (as like we did in stage 1) to assess higher-order reflective constructs with other reflective constructs but based on stage 2 results. Am I right (3) In stage two, when it comes to formative second-order construct assessment is not so clear to me. Do I need to use the same approach as I used in stage one to evaluate the formative model with stage 2 results ? or use the three-step procedure as outlined by Hair etal (2017)? Would you able to give a bit of help to clarify these three questions?

Off course you can use a 3rd order reflective-formative construct one your thesis. It’s the same idea like 2nd order; only you will have to do an additional step. Good luck with your thesis.

Another question if all iv,s and dv,s has sub dimensions is it necessary to perform second order cfa for thesis or we should use unidimensional scale so that our analysis seem easy for us

What if the higher order variable have their own items? Should I put both, their items and the items of the lower order variables.
Mauricio Santos it’s a good question but I do not think it’s possible. Higher order models are a way to measure abstract constructs which are too broad to be measured as a uni-dimensional construct. As such it’s broken down into dimensions so all measurement items should be loaded on dimensions and not to have it’s own measurement items.

I have a 2nd order construct (formative-formative)...in case of repeated indicator approach, all items measuring first order formative factors when loaded on 2nd order in the first step: this mode of loading will be REFLECTIVE or FORMATIVE ? pls suggest.
2. after first step, we can get the latent variable scores (standardized scores) and then use them for checking effect of the 2nd order factor on any other theoretically connected factor for establishing Criterion/ Nomological validity of 2nd order or even the reflective measure of its own self for redundancy assessment?
Sir, I have one issue my model contains one independent variable with four dimensions linking to dependent variable, but not equal number of items whether I use only repeated indicator approach or should I go for two stage ? and in second stage whether my items should be reflective or formative towards second order in formative case I have rho_a=1 only and nothing else.

Hi. I am confused about the formative 2nd construct and reflective 2nd construct. Even the same variable varies in different articles. Does it mean that it belongs to formative and reflective variables depend on the authors' understanding?Thanks!
Thank you for your comment. Yes the decision for choosing between formative and reflective construct is nit straightforward. Normally it should be based on literature. However, If literature has mixed findings, then please decide based on the recommendations in Jarvis et al (2003).

Hi, I have a an issue when saving the latent variable data to csv. When I import the CSV file, always get error in smartPLS. Do you have any idea about this?
Thank you for your comment. I do not really know. Your best course of action should be reinstalling the software.
Check the csv file in text readers. Sometimes there are separator characters in our data that results in unequal number of columns for each data point.
Dear Dr Faizan... In my study, I have a construct named "political knowledge". This construct have two dimensions "perceived political knowledge" and " factual political Knowledge".5 point Likert scale will be used to measure perceived political knowledge, whereas, for factual political knowledge statements like "Who is the president of the country?" will be used with four options one among these options will be the right option. I am using smartPLS. How can I analyse the "factual political knowledge"?. My second question is If a construct has more than one dimensions, can we use only one dimension in some specific context or it is mandatory to measure both dimensions and come up with a higher-order model on smartPLS.
How about if the mediator construct is reflective-reflective, can I use this 2 stage approach?

None of the papers say that. There are four types of conceptualizations for higher order models
