HOW TO: Do a Clean install of Mac OSX 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, And 10.11

- This is my How To Video for installing Mac OSX 10.7 on a MBP early 2011 but this will work on any system that currently has Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, or El Capitan on it.
All you need to do this is a system that already has 10.7-10.10 on it because as part of your original install it created a recovery partition and that is what we will be using.
REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR DATA! Following this tutorial will wipe your hard drive clean and you will loose all your data YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
IF YOU GET "THE ITEM IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE"
The reason you get this message is YOUR apple id is not associated to an apple operating system.
In the 4 choices you get click "GET HELP ONLINE" This opens Safari.
Click icloud and sign in with your apple id.
Now you can go back to installing screen and the downloading will finally work because you have now shown apple id you've logged in from your computer.
DO Not use someone else's apple id. You'll get all their apps.
Here is the method to use if you have 2FA turned on. answer is straight from Apple's site:
What if I use two-factor authentication on a device running older software?
If you use two-factor authentication with devices running older OS versions-like an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)-you might be asked to add your six-digit verification code to the end of your password when signing in. Get your verification code from a trusted device running iOS 9 and later or OS X El Capitan and later, or have it sent to your trusted phone number. Then type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field.
Just done the clean install following your instructions and it worked perfectly thanks.

you may be able to use the internet recovery to (Command + R during boot)
I have an iMac early 2013 that came with Mountain Lion. Unfortunately, I upgraded to Yosemite and now I want to completely restore it back, I follow the steps in the video and it still lists Yosemite as my Default OS. I also tried making a bootable USB with Mavericks on it and it still doesn't work. Any thoughts?
you must use the apple id and password that you downloaded the operating system with (or the origonal owners if it is second hand)
When I go to disk utility there is no Macintosh hd on the left side

yes just make sure they sign into the app store after they buy the system so the os will be linked to there apple id!!!
I do all the sets when i go to download Lion it say no enough storage?
the ? doesn't always mean that you need a new hard drive sometimes it just means that you need to reinstall. granted that doesn't help you without disks. you only have 2 options. either Download a copy from a torrent site (if you do this you have to download the one that came with your system) or you can try to buy/borrow a copy of snow leopard.
so I followed your instructions to 4:30 that's where I actually got stuck and its been hours with "Signing in to the App Store..." Is this normal?

I have MacBook Pro mid 2012 came with Yosemite installed, but it also has Lion, Included. i haven't been able to install it through Internet Recovery, i took it to Apple Store Genius Bar.And they asked what I wanted installed, I said "Lion" cuz that's what it also came included, and they tried the first attempt regular wifi no go, then they plugged in I'm guessing with Ethernet, and it was good to go. so is that what I would need instead of regular wifi????? if anyone knows please reply thank you.

So I bought a brand new hard drive and installed it, but it didn't work because I don't have the disk from apple to format the new hard drive. What would you recommend me to do now???
did your system come with lion? if so connect directly to your internet modem then hold command + R and power it on. keep holding command + R for 30sec to 1 min and it will boot the internet recovery
no but if you have a hard line connection you can hold command and R then power it on and keep holding cmd R until the apple logo shows up then let go and the internet recovery will boot

yours came with snow leopard, you should have gotten disks with it as the OS that is installed on that mac technically belongs to the guy that bought and installed it and not you, your options are to get a hold of a snowleo disk (10.6.x) or to follow the steps described below to get mountain lion (10.8.x)

I bought a used macbook pro from the local pawnshop and tried to follow the instructions but was unsuccessful. The recovery option was "locked" so I could only use the Hard drive option. How do I bypass the "locked" option??
if you have a friend's id and pass use that otherwise you will have to goto the app store and buy it.... or use the disks if your computer came with some
if i did this procedure and didnt back up my files on time machine or any other program does that mean i can never get back all my old files ?

try holding command+r instead of options and just keep holding it untill you see the apple

I did exactly as you did in the video and everything seemed to work fine. The only issue im having is that my mac seems to get "stuck" on the apple verification screen and all I get is a spinning icon with loading installation information next to it. In the video your mac got pass the screen quickly and went to the download but my mac seems to be taking an awfully long time. PLS HELP
normally it means that it does not have good connection to the internet. use a hardline connection and not the wifi

couldn't tell you exactly as it downloads everything so it depends on your internet connection but normally between 1 and 4 hours

How would i go on about if I partitioned my HD to install windows and i now have 2 partitions but want to have it back as 1 complete partition? Is it still the same process?
no you would want to delete both partitions and make one large one!

how could you reinstall an os that you never installed? this vid is for 10.7 you have 10.5 leopard... for your pop in your disk and instead of selecting the recovery partition select the disk then follow the instructions
.... you likely have snow leopard or an air.... if you have an air let it sit at that screen till it says internet recovery

Yep, what you do is shut down the MacBook Air then turn it on and immediately press on command+R, choose a wifi and go into the utilities

The only way you can do it is you have to have an apple ID that has Lion in it's app store. Basically you have to prove that you have the rights to use the software.

@Dove Evenson Victor your gonna need to use a hard like connection (that means buying a usb to Ethernet cable)
@ Dave Esposito Yes you will loose everything. if you want to give them just those apps here is how to do it: first make sure you have youjrmicrosoft office key! that can be installed at any time. as for logic pro if you have a disk copy then it's the same as office. if you bought it via the apple store then it is linked to your id and you can not transfer it however if you do a clean install (like in this video) then reinstall JUST those 2 programs they will be able to use them until they decide to do a clean install
@TheSuperIdentity only if it has 10.7.0 or later on it otherwise you will need a disk
@Ricardo Miranda and @ Jeiry Pena: this means the apple ID your using either did not purchess the software (this is normal if it came with it) or that you never logged into the app store using this ID... if you have never loged into the APP STORE with that ID then it will not be associated with your ID.... here is the only thing i have ever found that will solve this
1. IF you can still boot your system then do so and log into the app store click on purchases and make sure it shows the current operating system (lion, mountin lion, or maverick) after it has linked it to your account you can go back to your computer and continue the install
2. if you don't have access to the system you will need to find someone who has a system running the same OS as you (best buy is good for this) to see what it is running click the apple at the top left and click about this mac it will say something like OSX 10.7.X (lion), 10.8.x (mountin lion), 10.9.x (maverick). if it has the same OS as you log into it's app store and click purchases and make sure the OS is listed. after it has linked it to your account you can go back to your computer and continue the install
I need help, every time I followed this video step by step, and did everything it said. I erased everything on my main HD, and then I went to try and reinstall Mountain Lion. and when I try and do that, I get an error message saying
''An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.'' No matter how many times I try, I keep getting the error message. I am connected to Wi-Fi. You said, that I have to sign into my Apple ID for this to work, IF I bought the os. which I did, when upgrading from Snow Leopard. I DO have the Snow Leopard Install Disc, and I tried to just put that dvd in my laptop, and I was just going to install Snow Leopard, and just upgrade to Mavericks when everything is up and running. But my laptop isn't loading to dvd in, it just sits in the disc tray, the mac doesn't even load it. and I tried going back into my main HD, and signing into my apple id, buut... I deleted everything, and now the only hd that shows up is the recovery one. I need help please.

i have problems with my mac book pro 17 inches the model is a A1151 old model i tried to install Mac os x 10.7 lion which i believe is compatible i using a USB in the past with new models i created usb with the latest like Yosemite,el capitan, but for some reason this one is given me headaches i sure I'm not missing nothing ..but the system is running mac os x 10.6 without no issues but i want to upgraded it!! can you give me some directions maybe a firmware or something that i missing..
you can go to 10.7 but because that version has a 32-bit EFI you need to either modify your flash drive heavly, or put a clean 10.6 on it and then upgrade from there using the app store. this way it will download the 32-bit version instead of the standered 64-bit one
nope you can do it without disk 2 BUT that has iphoto imovie and grageband on it
