MAC: How To Install OS X After Formatting Your Hard Drive - Factory Reset / Fresh Reinstall OSX
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 авг 2024
- In this video I show you how to reinstall MAC OS X on your apple computer. This method should work on all apple computers and with all recent versions of MAC OS. For this guide I used a friends Macbook Pro that they had accidentally formatted the entire hard drive on, erasing all of their information but also the operating system. The Yosemite installer application (Install OS X Yosemite.app) I use was downloaded from the app store.
To follow this procedure you will need a flash drive / USB stick of at least 8GB capacity and another (working) apple mac or computer running MAC OS.
This process can take a long time depending on the speed of your USB drive, I recommend using a USB 3.0 stick in a USB 3 port.
IF YOU GET THE "This copy of the install OS X (VERSION NAME) application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading." ERROR WHEN INSTALLING...
You need to change the date / year on the computer using the command line (terminal) as shows in the video at 9:13 - The most important part of the date is that the year should be set to the same year that your installer was downloaded.
You can view this by right clicking on your "Install OS X VERSION.app" file and choosing "Get Info", then reading the year under "Created" or "Modified".
Names of commonly used MAC OS installers: (from the app store)
Install OS X Mavericks.app
Install OS X Yosemite.app
Install OS X El Capitan.app
Install macOS Sierra.app
Install macOS High Sierra.app
Install macOS Mojave.app
Install macOS Catalina.app
Install macOS Big Sur.app
Install macOS Monterey.app
Install macOS Ventura.app
Command for the terminal to create your USB stick:
IMPORTANT: Remember to modify it (as shown in the video at 3:16 ) for your version of the Mac OS X installer!

Tested and working 100%, multiple times by myself using Mac OS X Yosemite & El Capitan on Macbook Pro's.
This should work fine with all other versions of Mac OS X and all other apple Mac computers! Including Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, Mac Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, Apple Laptops, Macbook & iMac with Retina or 4K / 5K Display and more.

Thanks Man, You made my day and your steps are clear. It's working
i cant find os x lion on appstore what can i do help pleaaaaaase
Mine not working I’ve try many times
Please it keep saying
The request timed out.
lol 5 years on and i finally found you. you my friend is a GOD. i had the exact problem. i’m new to mac and i totally destroyed it. i spent the whole week trying many so called solutions that i found on youtube but none worked. it was the terminal code that many had missed to mention (i using transmac) that never made the usb bootable. i borrowed my friend mac then run the sudo command
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I've been looking all over for a tutorial to install El Capitan and I couldn't find it. Thanks to you I was able to install El Capitan on a MacBook Pro 2008...I can finally enjoy this computer. Thank you very much
The best instructional video on RUclips!! I was able to salvage an old iMac by reinstalling Yosemite from another Macbook via usb. I followed every one of your steps, and solved the issue.
Thank you so much. You’re awesome!!!!
You have no idea, not only how easily you explained this but showed the alternative ways of going about installing the os. I watched most and when they got to the part where the time needed to be changed, they left that part out or literally didn't know what to do. They had to go and find out and ended up cutting the video. Thank you soooooo much! It was so stressful until I found this video ❤
Simple, clear and easy to use. I've been struggling with this for weeks and all other videos were highly technical and confusing I had given up until I saw your instructions. Now, I know how to do it thanks to you. Great work. thank you very much for your time and efforts
I am not a computer guy by any means but after my hard drive died in my 2008 MacBook Pro I thought I would try swapping it out and figuring things out since I had nothing to loose. I followed your steps one at a time and everything worked perfect. Thank you for taking the time to do such a great video, worked perfect!
Key is in the Date the Apple was created/Modified. Especially if you are trying to make this work on the pre 2010, using a pre 2010. Clutch man. Was looking all over nothing fixed it until this!
a lot of video about this process but you are one of the few showing the 'date' error and hot to solve it. Thanks a lot.
Amazing video man, bought a 2010 MacBook Pro on eBay, put an SSD and installed it with a USB. Installer worked a dream thanks to you!
Did you formatted the SSD before installing an OS on it or just installed it as it is?
THIS GUY IS AMAZING! It absolutely works I can attest. I did something stupid to my iMac 2007 it was running Yosemite. I followed his steps, I ran into a few kinks, i.e I had to use a 64gb flash because my 16 gb wouldn't work for whatever reason but once I got it going, it worked like magic! My Mac is now up and running again.
Thank you!! Been trying all sorts to get this sorted, and you the first video that I've seen that gives great instructions! It worked for me.... 4 years later since posting your video! Thank you
Really useful video, I have just bought Macbook A1432 and i will be upgrading the RAM to 8gig and changing the hard drive to a SSD so i will be following this tutorial closely.
Worked perfect! Thank you, I had never installed a new hard drive before and this video was way simpler than the other ones I found on here about reinstalling operating system. Great Video!
Hi, Just read your message and saw you managed to install the Mac OS. I was wondering if you might be able to send me a copy of the OS or point to in direction you got it from? Thank you
Nathan, thanks a ton for your video, for several weeks after a gray screen and failing to get OS X El Capitan after I had wiped the hard drive for a fresh install I followed you video to the "T", perfect, concise, accurate and most importantly my wife is stoked she gets a working MacBook Pro again.... AWESOME!!!!! PS.. yes I too waited for 10min at the "1 second" left mark lol.
Thank you so much Nathan. Just did it for my mac mini (2015 model). For anyone facing issue. Simply change the date in command section for the mac that you are facing issue and click on install OS (internet compulsory).
If you cant do it via pen drive coz even for me pen drive did not give an option to Partition. Just do what he says from 9.45 till end
Love this video - I was about to send my 2012 Macbook Pro to the B1N file because all i needed to do was change the date to make the USB works - Great video and thanks once again
Last 2 week I am trying to set my MacBook but nothing work everything I did now finally u save my MacBook thanks a lot.
I love the level of detail you included in this video. Thank you!
I could easily follow your instructions here. An erased hard drive could be in my future. Ha!
'The more I learn, the less I know...' Paraphrased quote from some smart guy. So true.
I want a bootable USB with both OS X Yosemite and El Capitan. So, I made 3partitions ~10 gigs each on a 32 GB flash drive.
I accidentally copied Yosemite extended (not journaled) on partition1. Oh well...
Then, El Capitan wouldn't fit on partition2. Opportunity knocks again.
I reckon I start again... Thanks
Wow... I've been watching so many videos until now. Only yours helped. Tears of joy. Thanks lots
great video. Im trying now to install a OS X High Sierra on a MacBook Pro from 2010. I have some problems to changes date in terminal. The terminal message is: no command. Is it other ways for us in Norway with UTC time. And the second fail I got, is after rebooting 2 times and trying to startup, I got a message that a message of Cernel fail. Any tips
omg YOU ARE MY LIFE SAVERRRRRR! I followed so many tutorials for the past few days but only this video works for me😭😭 so simple and easy to understand! THANKYOU SO MUCHHHHHG❤️💕
this is soooooo helpful I feel like hugging you. I love the detail in this video. I am trying to do this on a 2006 Mac Pro that had been formatted, will it work on that?
It should do! Give it a shot.
Thanks, Nathan.
This comment is so adorable aww
Thank You. After wasting days and days I came across your video. Exactly what I needed!
Thank you so much for your video. Three days ago I upgraded from El Capitan to Mojave because I heard it would improve performance of older Macs (I have a 2015 Macbook Air) - although I have been totally happy with El Capitan. Well, big mistake - Mojave drained my battery like crazy. I've been trying since then to create a bootable El Capitan Install USB drive and thanks to your video I was able to do it, and I'm happily up and running with El Capitan again!!
the battery is ok now??
since u downgraded to el capitan?
Yes, my battery is running fine again with El Capitan. (When I upgraded to Mojave, I could almost watch the battery % go down.)
I am downgrading today then...my battery is 4-5 hrs with web browsing...
I dont rem how it was with El capitan....bt surely better ...
Sad..that i love Mojave ..but will give it a try after 6 mnts ...❤️
thank for the feedback brother ....
You bet! I hope your battery improves with El Capitan. I've had my Macbook Air 18 months and with Firefox I think I get about 9-10 hours.

YOU ARE THE BEST!!! I LOOKED THROUGH EVERY VIDEO ON RUclips AND COULD NOT FIND ONE THAT WORKED. YOU HELPED ME SO MUCH!!! THANKYOU.
Thanks my mac pro was not working for more than two years after sending to apple technician telling me that i have to change the mother board and better for me to buy a new one but now it's working.
Nathan, you are the man!
The date setting in termnial, was prohibiting me from doing any install of Mac OS , after clearing the HD to factory setting. A truly annoying situation.. However current date was set to year 2000, and thus changed to current time.. If it wasn't for your video, and the little tip of checking date settings trough the terminal, I might just have threw the laptop in the bin!
is there an accurate shortcut to find this date or is it purely trial and error ?
I did it trough trial and error. Asked myself the same question back then..
I've spent hours looking for tutorials. The best one by far. Thanks so much! :D
2021 and still relevant. Thnx mate
what macbook?
Thank you so much Nathan. Your video was the most helpful out of all the information I have been gathering all day trying to reinstall OSX on my imac.
THANK YOU so much. Incredible resource, you saved us!
this is very helpful been trying to figure out the problem of my installation process in my mac late 2010. I cant install the HS on it. been encountering “firmware need to update”. i think i need to install a lower version and youtube let me see this video. thanks a lot.
Your simple instructions and guidance are the best I have come across, many thanks !
Thanks man! in Terminal i get following message "media: command not found". I followed pricesly the changes of system name and usb name name but still...any suggestions?
This guy saved my 1000$ macbook thanks a lot I am crying
Enter the text in terminal and get 'command not found' ....... Please help 🥺🤗
Thanks a lot Nathan. Your video helped me to recover my MacBook.
Amazing video! Great job on explaining in such detail. One thing I did run into was my button for the partition was grayed-out. It is a new hard drive to upgrade storage.
Fix: I had to erase the HD (I’m guessing this is formating it) then I was able to partition the drive. Thank God for those two computer science classes or I would’ve never figured it out 😅😅😅
TaeterTot thanks for the info
Cheers pall worked a treat, I've been clawing my hair out trying to fix this.
Great tutorial. The setting the date back to different years corresponding with the date I bought the OS was key to unlocking the unverified version that I kept running in to on the OS install. Thanks and cheers.
Thank you for your feedback and watching.
I find it ridiculous that they lock you down like this because of the date. It's a pathetic move in my opinion but who am I to question the 'all-mighty Apple' and their decisions.

Question 4 U. I bought a new hard drive for my MacBook Pro A1278 at Best Buy, went home, & installed it. Right after I installed it, I turned it on & got the same flashing ? Inside a file icon as the MacBook in the video did. Will using this method still work if the new hard drive I bought & installed hasn’t been formatted? If not. This video is extremely helpful, detailed, & easy follow regardless. U did an awesome job making the video.
I know hardly anything but this looks real easy to follow. I've got my Yosemite OS downloading now but now to I make it a .app? Basic language required, I have almost no idea what I'm doing!
Amazing video!! This was exactly what I needed and it worked perfectly with no hassle. Thank you so much !!
I had to leave a comment. Best tutorial, no doubt! The date trick was key! Thx
Thank you for detailed video. I was able fix the same problem I was having. But, I was working on a Mac Mini.
Thanks again!!
Thank you so much Nathan. I almost gave up on this, but your video was such a saver
Brilliantly clear and concise instructions! Great Job Nahan.
Thanks! Worked the first time, unlike other tutorials.
I downloaded to DMG OSX off torrent website then used transmac tool to create my USB. You helped me with the install 😊
One of the best videos yet. And I can understand you lol. That’s surely a plus !
Question , do you have anything for “ no bootable device”. I’m trying to fix my MacBook pro
GAME CHANGER!!! I finally found my solution! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the tutorial but everytime i try and put the file into terminal with the changes that iv made(Snow\ Leopard and the usb name)terminal keeps telling me command not found.do you have any ideas why its not working for me?
Check to make sure the install file is exactly the same name as the one he added to the stuff you copy/paste. For example, I'm doing this to install Catalina. In his instructions (which I'm sure were correct when he recorded this video) the installation program was called "Install OS X Yosemite.app", so I assumed all I needed to do was change it to "Install OS X Catalina.app" and I would be fine, but I got the same error you are getting. I then noticed Apple had called the newer installation program "Install macOS Catalina.app". It's just a little different, but enough to make the computer not know what I wanted. I had to change that in two places so it said, "Install\ macOS\ Catalina.app" and then it worked.
Great thanks Nathan! I was totally in the darkness, until I found this clip. :)
thank you so much adding info about the terminal
Thank men. Is work for my 2009 imac..
Thank you so much. Your video was my saver.
Thanks for making this video it is very straight and comprehensive. But I have a different problem, I want to create a bootable USB for Mac OS SIERRA but I don't have a Mac book laptop. Any ideas on how to solve?
Many thanks Mate. Your video with its Wide Range of information was sooooo useful and helped me Find the right way.
Thank you !!! I agree with the last poster. I forgot the partition and format disk part from another time I did this.
*In case you get the folder icon blinking with a question mark in it, after formatting, don't panic. Read this*
I had to sell my Mac and accidentally formatted the OS as well and saw videos where people are opening up their mac to get it fixed.
I pressed the power button and waited but the blinking icon would just return back.
After a while may be more than 1min, I pressed the power button and then long pressed command + R together.(10 seconds maybe)
It asked me to connect to the internet since I was not connected.
I entered my wifi credentials and then the earth rotating icon was displayed with a ⏲️0:07 timer.
After the countdown reached 0:00 The apple symbol was displayed and it started loading. Took sometime though. And then the select language page. Everything back to normal.
Hope this helps someone.
Do not panic whatever happens.
This video saved me AND its legit ASMR....
This is a very well done instructional video. You get right to the point and flow through. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for this video it really help me a lot with my MacBook 🙏🙏
Fantastic! You really saved me with this tutorial! Thank u so much!
If you have one of those Mac os x installation disc you can use that instead of the usb
Hello! I’m following your steps but I missed that info that when doing partitioning it will automatically erased the data. Is there any way to recover the data in my external drive I’ve accedentally erased? Please teach me how. Thank you.
This is the best tutorial ever! I have almost watched every tutorial, but the info in these video's were incomplete. This video learned me a lot! Thank you very much!!!
How u installed the operating system from which website?
Plz also tell me about time steps which he did
Very cool videos. I had the same problem with the install of Mavericks on a MacBook with dead hard drive and drive cable - bought for $200. The operating system executable is signed with a start and expiry date and you get the 'corrupted' image error if you install after the expiry date - setting the date before the expiry date lets it install. I also disconnected from wifi as well in case NTP updated the clock to the correct date but I'm not sure that was needed. Also found you can plug in an external slimline drive into USB, format, install the operating system and boot from that. Then pull the external USB drive apart and install inside the laptop.
I’m having a problem:
When I try to Partition my USB (Memorex 3.1 64gb), it’s not giving me the option to. It’s greyed out. I have a MacBook Pro 2011. Is partitioning necessary? And do you have any suggestions?
I have macbook pro 2011 also.. did you fix it?
hi there ive seen the video and im quite confident that this works and i appreciate that. For some reason, i type in the command exactly how you say with the correct software version but it keeps saying command not found
Hi there, What OS version are you trying to create the installation USB from? If it is a old version then I would recommend using the Yosemite or El Capitan installer app file from the app store or newer. That should work fine as shown in the video.
In some cases the older OS versions (Lion for example) don't have the ability to create USB media using the command shown in this video. Hope this helps!
--Nathan.
yeah i appreciate the reply but i tried again and it worked; i think because i force ejected USB last time and this time i did not. Thanks alot for the video, honestly so helpful :)
Awesome! Good to know you got it working.
Glad to be of assistance. --Nathan
YOU saved my day!!! Thank You sooo much!!!
This was a big help. I thought I bricked my iMac.
Thank you so much for the clear precise instructions
You guys dont need any usb, just shut down your mac and hold command + R and turn the mac on and keep holding Command + R. Then just download the given mac os over internet, if u get stuck.. change the date some years earlier if your mac is trying to install older OS but not managing to download it. Macbook pro mid 2012 here
Wassup bro I need help I’m stuck on OS X Utilities screen

This video is very informative. Thanks a lot

HI your video was very helpfull for me to reinstall osx el capitan on a 2008 imac, thanks
Great information, but what happens if you don't have a second Mac to download the files and only have a PC?
Had the same issue with the date. Fixed it with your help, thank you!
Very well presented Nathan !
I have a similar problem where I wiped my Imac clean without having a bootable backup of High Sierra
I want to use the system you displayed here but my other available newer Apple computer will not allow me to download old versions of OS X
How did you manage to download these old versions on your computer ?
Any advice would be gratefully received ! Many thanks
Hey, If you look on your purchase history on the app store you should be able to find and re-download all the previous versions of OS X you've installed as updates.
Hope this helps!

My MacBook Pro is back. Thank You dude!
Hi mate! Can you offer any advice for a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.. Which software would you recommend is best and any advice on what year to change it to etc would be great!! I haven’t downloaded any software from the appstore in my other Mac as of yet. Cheers in advance

Hi Nathan,
Great Tutorial! Worked Great on an old Mac Book Pro 2008. I have a 2006 Mac Pro Desktop, which I successfully got El Capitan to work. A particular software needs Yosemite, so I am using your tutorial. After I successfully create the USB and use it on my Mac Book pro, I tried it on the Mac Pro desktop, I erase and partition the desktop hard drive, then I go back to Utilities, the second option doesnt say, Install OS X, it says, Reinstall OS X . When I click on that, it tries to install El Capitan instead of Yosemite and takes me to the app store. How can I get it to boot Yosemite from the USB I created from your excellent tutorial?
Thanks Mate!!!! you saved my day. The date was wrong, I changed it as you said. It worked :) cool
How do u change the the date is it from recovery mode ??
@@sharukhkhan9242 go to Utilities then open terminal use date command
Syntax:
date -u {month} {day}{hour}{minute}{year}
Something like that just check it
Good luck 🤞
@@binoop4u thanks dear x
Very interesting and informative presentation. I have the sameproblem with 2010 MacBook Pro and put away in the attic for a few years. After your video, I tried to revive it. After creating a bootable USB loaded with OS, and was able to go to the screen where USB stick with description of OS shown, and I clicked it. But it never took to the OS utility site where I can reformat the hard drive and install OS. After selecting the USB with the OS installed as described on your video, I have white screen which doesn't go to the next level. Am I missing something or this computer has more issues?
Give me a virtual hug my guy ‼️
You are justtttt the besttttt. I've liked and subscribed
