I found I have 2 hard drives. One appear as Macintosh HD and the other one as Macintosh HD - Data, which one should I erase or what should I do? (Btw, im getting rid of this mac)
Nevermind. Already found a solution. Thanks though. It did help me too.
Silvana Rivas hey tell whats ur solution ? I havemacos catalina and then i follow the instructions until “ macos catalina eill be installed on the disk “ macintosh HD “ is it good for me ? I hope u can see this now. I need help
What’s the difference btwn “command+R“ and “command+option+R” ?
I forgot admin name or password in preferences
This is the clearest concise tutorial that I've found on YT. Your images are even the best. I really like the option where you tell your audience to hold certain keys if you are going to keep the mac or give it to someone or sell it; that wasn't included in tutorials by others on YT. Good job!
You could keep it and sell it back to yourself. I can't see the difference.
Oh MY GOD. This is THE best video on RUclips. All these other people are just trying to low-key promote other services and give extra steps that are not even needed! This was simple, straight to the point, and EASY. I have NO computer maintenance skills, ZERO, and this helped me reinstall Monterey from the most recent 12.6 update issue!!
I am a Windows based IT Professional so whatever I have learned about Mac OS and functionality is pretty much self taught, so I really appreciate this informative video to reset a iMac which I just sold. Very easy to follow and everything worked perfectly. Thanks
Thank you my dude, I thought my Mac was unusable. It’s been sitting for almost a year, and I finally decided to try and figure it out. First guy to do anything that actually let me back into my laptop.
i am a Senior Citizen in New York City I am 70 years young (Never Say Old) lol thanks for making it sooooooooosimple Vic
Good for you! I'm a New York expatriate in New Jersey and am 71-years-young!
I’m 14
I'm 16
Keep learning loving y’all!
Im 12
I had a spare Mac mini in my cupboard that I wanted to use as a HomeAssistant server but it was SO slow! This video allowed me to wipe the Mac quickly and easily. Quick note: I’m using a PC keyboard so if you replace the command key with the windows key, it works fine.
Thanks for the very clear instructions!
After going through 5 other videos, your video explained the process in an easy to understand manner. Thank you!
This is why I love youtube. I literally had my IMAC sitting collecting dust since 2018 lol I've searched up this so many times and never worked but this video got my computer back without having to wait in apple extreme lines lol. thanks 😬
Excellent instructions. I'm on Windows but my friend that uses Mac asked me to reset their computer. I did it without problems using this video.
Do i need to backup my Mac before doing this, or is it a back up copy of OS storage in my Mac?
I have been the last frustrating days trying to fix my laptop. Your video was the solution. So well explained, clear, beautiful. Thank you very much
I watched 3 videos and the was the most clear and concise. I loved how you explained the different reboot options. To anyone needing to do this.. look no further!
Do I need to back all my things up if I have everything of my Apple ID on my phone?
THANK YOU!!! I have an older Mac that I thought I would have to pay someone to retrieve all of my precious memories before I do a system upgrade. This video is a Godsend! I'm a new sub because of this video. Blessings to you
I have been trying to follow instructions of other RUclipsrs for 2 days. 5 min with your video and I got it! Thanks so much!
Very clear step-by-step instructions. On my Mac HD I don't have the APFS Format. I only have OS X Extended (Journaled), OS X Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled), OS X Extended (Journaled, Encrypted), OS X Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled, Encrypted), MS-DOS (FAT) or ExFAT. What should I do then? Thanks!
I know I'm a little late but, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) is what he says to use if APFS is not an option.
Hi cheers for the tips but can I ask what the implications are for choosing the CMD+R (decision to keep the Mac) over the CMD+OPTION+R (decision to sell) when rebooting. I want to format mine which was sold to me by a seller who didn't reset to factory settings. Am I best choosing the second/latter option in this instance? even though I intend to keep it, I want to make sure that nothing from the previous owner is connected to the PC ever! Thanks in advance
This is the clearest concise tutorial that I've found . I really like the option where you tell your audience, thank you very much and with blessing of God.
I reinstalled my mac just now but still keep the old memory. Thank God i found your video. Thank you, Sir.
This was very helpful and easy to understand. One thing though, after turning your computer back on holding the 2 or 3 keys you decided with and it’s back on now, in the top right hand corner you have to turn on your WiFi. Otherwise you will get a message says can’t contact server. Thanks a bunch for the instructions.
It is possible to use the imac 2013 without using an i cloud account or without an account in general
Brother, you saved my day. I was trying to reinstall this Mac for a long time and your explanation was clear like crystal. Thank you very much and I just Subscribed to your Channel.
Will reseting update the OS to a newer version?
Hi Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial but I got a problem with my Mac. after I reinstalled macOS, now software update option is not available in system preferences. Could you please tell me how do I get it back? Thanks a lot
Thanks- How to you do this, but then restore the imac to the original (different from what is currently on it) operating system?
Thank you, was the only video I found that was very clear and to the point.
The Apple tech told me I would have to take my Mac Book in because he could not help over the phone, but this walked me through it with ease. Thank. you!
Can you explain the difference between the two key combinations?
I wanna know too
can we use time machine to restore the files and setting to erased computer
how do you do this if you have forgotten the password and dont have the screens you show?
ive had my computer since 2015 and lately to install simple updates takes forever. I think i should do this. whats your opinion?
Thanks for the clear instructions. On my late 2009 27" iMac, Cmd+Opt+R stubbornly refused to work, but Cmd+R took me to the Utilities menu, and I could proceed from there. High Sierra is the best my machine can run and should give someone else good use for quite a while. It's reloading as I type this. Thanks again.
do I need usb flashdrive for this reinstall process?
thanks so much for the video, will this work if my Imac 2011 stop booting?
Thanks mate in 10 minutes I've reset the iMac because of your video keep up the good work 👍
Great video - does this also include an old MacBook from around 2010-2011?
Great video, I used it to sell a mac on eBay. One thing you didn't mention was how to SAFELY SHUT DOWN your computer from the welcome screen; to do this press COMMAND + Q.
Thanks for the very effective tutorial, as you definitely know your subject matter! Great job!
Is this still valid for 2024 Mac studio running Sonoma - or should i wait to go Sonoma until bugs worked out?
CLEAN & CLEAR guiding...THANKS A LOT my friend!!!1
2 questions.
Can I use this method to upgrade the OS?
What’s the best way to retrieve the data from the bootable backup I made with CCC? Can I use migration assistant?
very good video. When I went to erase I had Macintosh HD as well as Macintosh DATA, I just erased the HD is that correct or was I supposed to erase both?
How did it work out?
@@carloscadenas1152 i erased both and everything worked out fine
Thanks for the video. Is it possible to reinstall an older version as my iMac is not supporting the newest version of the IOS ?
I have a question, I bought an older iMac at a garage sale. If I do your instructions, will I be able to reinstall the OS back?
Dear Full Speed Mac & PC, how do you back up your data and be confident you haven't backed up malware? Thanks!
If this is for ourselves, should we sign in to our Apple ID in the beginning before it takes us to the homepage or once we already get to the homepage and check if our software is up to date? Thanks!
Thanks! But can you please explain how to do that with a windows keyboard? “Windows” key + R?
If you didn’t sign out of your Apple Music but you did erase the whole iMac will it still have you sign into your Apple Music
Hey man. Thanks so much for making this video. It was so easy to follow screen by screen as well as concise. Really appreciate your help! Have a great day!
What's the difference between resetting for keeps or resetting to sell, in regards to which keys you hold down ?
Thank you!finally I got peace of mind with your easy to understand step by step guide.
trying to wipe the imac after buying it and did the steps. I get a spinning globe that says it may take a while. do I hold control, option, R the entire time?
Do I need a mouse to do this because I am stock at the macOS Utilities and can't select the Disk Utility.
Please help!
Does factory reset also delete all licensed programs like pro tools or adobe programs
what do you do in disk utility if you don’t have APFS or Mac OS extended journaled as options?
Does this way required bootable usb
Great video. The only thing I would recommend adding to your video is how to enable TRIM for those who are reinstalling Mac OS on a SSD drive.
Hello, I have a mac keyboard hooked up to an older imac through usb. I need to reset the password on the imac so I need to hold down the command key = R. Well , it isnt working because I cant get the imac to recognize the usb keyboard on startup. How can I solve this issue?
I had success with these instructions but while i was holding down the three keys it asked me for the wifi code and later for my startup code. Both times I had to lift my fingers and enter the code and then put my fingers back on the keys and hit go and from there it went just as you said so thank very much
Hi, first of all thank you for clear explanation on how to reset iMac. But i have a question, why do i need to sign out on iTunes, find this Mac, and iMessage before doing the factory setting? Will i loose something if I didn’t sign out on those apps? I greatly appreciate for your answer.
This is the clearest instructions one can get. Job well done. Thumb up!
Tried and followed so many videos … only this worked . Thanks 🙂
Hey, thank you so much! One question tho, if i'm keeping the computer, do i need to sign out from those apps? Cheers
will factory reset reinstall it with its original garage band?
What about the 'new' person getting the old iMac? Will they be able to turn it on with the OS installed? Thanks.
does this also solve the camera problem??
Tried to hold command + option + R and a spinning globe pop up.
do you back up with backblaze before or after the factory reset?
Thanks so much for this guide. My problem has gone away after reset.
THANK YOU!! You made my school year so much better
Thank you. I just upgraded to a Mac Studio and after using migration assistant I have been trying for days to wipe my iMac. Disc erase was greyed out and I’ve gone to web sites and watched other videos with didn’t help. First try using your approach, signing out and using option/command/R did the trick. Wish I had found you video sooner 👍👍
I watched about 10 vids on here... only yours got me where I needed to be so many thanks for that ...
Thanks for sharing. Would it delete that "Other" Space as well? which is like 50% of the Harddrive, and is unknown, and can't be deleted otherwise.
thank you so so much, 3 years later and this still works
If I factory reset the OS and want to put my time machine backup on the computer would I choose the install from time machine option or the reinstall OS option? And load the time machine backup afterwards?
Will this method work for iMac Monterey reinstall?
I follow step 3 and It started internet recovery is this correct?
If I have a Fusion Drive, how do I reset to factory settings? Erasing Macintosh HD? or erasing the Fusion Drive itself?
Hi thanks for video, but what if i got it wrong and choose mac os extended journaled instead apfs?? Please help
If you make a time machine backup, can you select individual folders/files from said backup or does i have to be the entire backup?
I will be resetting my old iMac once I get files transferred to my new iMac. But, when I open System Preferences I do not have the iCloud icon. Any insight as to why?
Can I do it, if I want to get rid of all the junk on my computer ?
What would happen if I didn't do the initial signing out steps but continued with the following steps?
For macOS Catalina Users - Time Stamp 4:26:
1. Select the "Mac HD - Data'
2. Click the minus sign where it says "Volume" (Or click 'edit' at the top and then 'delete APFS' )
3. Click "Delete" on the popup
4. Select "Mac HD"
5. Click "Erase"
6. Give it a name (Recommended: 'Macintosh HD')
7. Select "APFS" next to format (Or Mac OS Extended Journaled if APFS is not available)
8. Click "Erase"
Were you using Bootcamp?
There should be an option to remove it (usually a minus sign) or an option to erase it.
Finally thank you
Does this also work for iMac 9,1
Clear instructions, thank you.
Man, you are the best!! you just save close to $100 for the "repair"
So what do you do if you get one without this stuff done ? I can reinstall os on my 2015 air I just bought
Thank you so much. A well presented video with clear and easy to understood instructions. Like others I couldn't find any other video that was so clear. Worked well for me in order to sell my iMac (yes, I've bought a new 2020 intel iMac).
what keyboard layout app you using in this video, please tell , it will useful for my course making videos
is this helpful for reducing the ''other'' space?(for some reason it uses 55 gb)
Having the same issue. I'm literally reseting my Macbook Pro 10.15.4 just to delete this "other" space. Write me tomorrow and I'll get back with the results.
@@adm1054 same situation with mine
How long doesnit take because mine has been on a white apple
Logo screen for 1 hr
So followed the steps, but I have 2 “Macintosh HD” options, the second one is “Macintosh HD - Data” should this be erased as well or kept? If kept, what does the process look like for re-installing when you get to the disk reinstall screen?
Thank you… this really helped me out after upgrading to Ventura caused my internet to become glitchy.
Great tutorial. Thank you. By the way does this method trigger IOS update? Because, I don't want the latest version on my macbook pro.
As I tried to install Macintosh HD it required that I sign in using my Apple ID to install from App Store. The issue is I’m trying to sell it so I’m hoping the person will have no issue when He signs in to install.

Why do you have to sign out from your account before formatting the disk which will however delete that type of info?
What do u do when u don’t have apfs
