9 Years later...still using this excellent tutorial. Great video, I like your enthusiasm!
Many thanks.
Im trying to do this rn. It used to work but now it said that it cannot download the additional components needed to install mac os x. Any suggestion on why this might happen???
@@gustimeidylistiananda999 What install version of Lion are you using (10.7.x)? Where did you get that install file? And what OS does your computer currently use?
I got error saying " can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x " after starting the installation, any fix?
Sorry I no longer have this to check.
grejty - got the same here, going to try taking the RAM out to 4gb..
@@Trig0r Were you able to fix it? im having same issue
@@abstractsmusic ended up downloading the El Cap (Cant get older than this) image from the Apple site, then using Transmac to create a bootable USB stick on my PC, quick install of El Cap, then used the Mac to grab the High Sierra install via the AppStore and then used Terminal to make my USB stick a High Sierra bootable, booted with that, formatted the SSD again and then did a fresh High Sierra install, arse over tit way of doing it but it was Sunday and I had time...
Make Option-⌘-R
OMG after 12 years still its the best tutorial , Thank you sir.
🤓👍🏻
@angrywhenroused No iWork is not part of the install on any Mac. If you mean iLife, then yes that would be on there.
@pepijnApaans No you don't need to, you can install direct from the download if you want.
@Stabiloseven No worries, glad u liked it.
@Fisail009 You can install just by clicking, this way just means you are getting a completely clean fresh install. You need to backup your files doing either method, highly recommended.
@mihoandmarv Glad it helped and thanks for commenting, it means a lot to me.
@thetechfixer System Prefs > Trackpad > Scroll & Zoom > Scroll Direction Natural
Excellent!!! The best how-to video on RUclips on doing a clean install of Mac OS X Lion.
@N1ghtv1s1on360 1. Yes. 2. Yes you can just wipe the partition you want to install to.
@Totes1829 Yes it is a 'clean' install - you backup your data first.
@TheConn0rz no you need Lion on a disk, or Apple will be working on a Mac App Store direct install of some sort.
@dell11700 you can clean install if you hold on ALT just before the apple logo pops up when you turn on your computer and enter the recovery hard drive and reinstall lion.
@crewsai If you do a clean install yes, it you just upgrade, no. However, do a backup first.
This was the best tutorial for Downgrading to Lion, Can't say how happy I am to have come across your video. I was tired of using Mountain Lion.... thanks again mate!
@pyote5 You can create a bootable Mac OS X Lion Installer on the external HD. I found that the bootable Mac OS X Lion installer created by Mac Disk Utility requires a minimum of a bit under 4.23 GB.
If the external HD uses GUID Partition Table, Mac Disk Utility can create a 4.23 GB partition for Mac OS X Lion Installer, plus other partitions.
If it uses Master Boot Record, it is easy to change it to GUID with Windows 7 or Linux, harder to do with Mac OS X.
Lion Installer still works with MBR.
@pepijnApaans You certainly can, but I wanted to keep a copy to boot from and install on multiple devices.
@AppleUpdatez I wouldn't put the install on the same hard drive, but if that is the only way, then yes.
@dell11700 the recovery hard drive is there just incase the main boot disk isnt working o on the recovery hard drive you can do anything and completely wipe all the data thats on your hard drive at the time
Hi . My ' preparation for install ' operation get stuck at a random time . I tried it many times , it just get stuck . I am using an extrenal USB prepared as in your tutorial . Any ideas ?
Sorry I no longer have this to check.
@jjchucho Your time machine backup will give you the option of what to restore, eg. Users
Thank you for the video. It was easy to follow. A 4GB USB flash drive was not large enough and I received an error. I purchased an 8GB and then the clean install on 2008 Macbook Air went smooth as a baby's bottom.
@RobinScott93 Weird why they changed it around.
After ten years I used of this video
It was great
Many thanks 🤓👍🏻
@RobinScott93 It kind of makes sense if you think about it. It works the same was as iOS. You drag up and the page moves down. It can be turned off if you don't like it, but so far it hasn't annoyed me, I've already gotten used to it lol.
@Mcwiz You need to restore the .dmg file to be able to boot from the device and clean install.
@aVEzPz Yes this is a clean install, back to like having a newly purchased Mac. You can then restore your files from an external backup (assuming you have one).
@Jamiul1000 If you look at the installer screen (when disk utility pops up) there is an wifi emblem at the top, so it is connected i think by using snow leopard or something, or manually connect to your wifi
Nice video Dave! You can also make a bootable dvd using disk utility. Leave the disk in the drive when it's completed burning. Reboot and hold down the C key on your keyboard and your mac will start reading the disk and the install process will begin.
@dhp106 Yes, this video showed it being installed on a blank drive.
@davomrmac However, if you don't have many apps installed and only install the apps you need plus use CleanMyMac then then there is little to no need for a clean install on a Mac nowadays.
@CrayDesigns Yep that is what a clean install does, you don't have to do it this way though.
@Athos523 It gives you the option.
@earlbee31 With a MacBook Air probably. Though they are meant to be selling them soon.
@aVEzPz If it is a Time Machine backup you can restore apps, but I would always reinstall apps to avoid issues.
@borderline666 Thanks for watching & commenting.
@gudetaste Thanks for your comment.
@KimCheeHuu Yes, you can do a clean install after using this method.
@TalesOfWar Yes, after posting my comment I did a bit of reading online and realised that Lion takes an iOS approach to scrolling; it's as though you are pulling on the page when you scroll with the trackpad. I suppose it just takes some getting used to.
Hi mate.
What about the installation process where the copy of files is running and from nowhere, the transfer stops saying "Input/Output" issues?
I had done this process several times, with the bad result. What I'd be done wrong?
Thanks in advance for the response.
Sorry I no longer have this to check.
@sia94chin Hmmmm, not too sure. If you contact Apple & find out please do let me know.
@mmf3578 Yes, doing a clean install you lose your apps and have to reinstall them.
@dell11700 It is not supplied with the new ones.
@pepijnApaans If you have created the USB drive correctly, yes. Make sure you make a backup of your important files first. Oh and as always, this is at your own risk ;)
Worked like butter
Good to hear, thanks for your comment.
great video, very well explained, i moved from snowleopard to lion osx with no problem at all, thanks so much!
I did not have a 8GB USB so I used a dvd-r to burn the image to. I restarted using that dvd. I erased the startup hard drive and then began the installer.Which ran until about 3 minutes remaining in the install and gave me the message "Cant download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X".
So my mac is officially unusable at the minute. Really appreciate some help?. My only guess is I should try and use my external HD instead but that means moving mountains of data off it....
@jacquebona Good to hear.
@MophieZ Not sure what drivers you are looking for.
question: Why would you want to do a clean install of mac OS X Lion, what are the benefits? would you recommend doing this over just updating your system. Sorry for asking what would appear to be a dumb question. Im just unsure myself, thanks
how long does it take to install mac os 10.7 lion? im installing it on my macbook pro now n it takes me ages! the progress bar doesnt move even just a little bit!! do i have to restart it?
@sia94chin You have to redownload, after you install from the App Store download it disappears.
@kaffemax920314 sorry no idea on that one.
I would like to do the same thing. My only problem is I am running Lion on my machine already. Could I just erase the HDD, like you did, then download Lion and install it?
great video, clear and intuitive! When I need to do a clean install of OS X Lion I will refer to this video.
@TrepanationSB Thanks for watching.
So how do we get our backup data back onto our machines after the clean install?
@Saifkins You can, but that is risky, always backup.
Definitely the clearest guide I found. Thanks a lot man. Cheers.
My Lion says it will take 100 hours to download, my internet speed isn’t bad so have no idea why, it’s 120GB but usually I can get downloads for that quite fast, any ideas why?
Sorry I no longer have this to check. Might be because it’s an older version and put on a slower server.
6:40 Does the Mac have to be hooked up to the internet? Do i need internet connection to do a fresh install of lion with bootable usb?
You need internet to get the files onto the USB. Then no internet connection to install. After install you need internet again to complete setup.
How are you going to "purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store" if "the Mac App Store is not available" in your area/region...?
just wanted to say thanks for the great vid. First time i have ever done a clean install on a Mac (or PC) it went like a dream. I wouldn't have attempted it without your guide, keep up the good work ;)
Thanx!! Almost finishing the instalatton here!
so why did you have to burn it on the external HD, you could go to Lion recovery by holding cmd+r, and then erase the disk,
or do you need the external HD after the erase to get Lion back from ?
very useful from India
Many thanks 🤓👍🏻
Great job Dave, thanks for the video!
I have a question, How do you do to boot with the USB drive?, I have the same than you and my mac boot in to the Hard Drive. If i push the alt when the mac is booting i can select the usb drive, but in the screen show me a "X" (similar to error) and after booting again into the hard drive. Thx for all your vídeos.
@davomrmac Unfortunately i never made a time machine backup. I guess I will have to reinstall them. Thank you for your help!
Wait so what do you mean by " Clean Install " and would i loose all my programs when I install Lion?
So awesome - thanks for taking the time to make this video!
if you install lion from the official thumb drive you don't get the restore partition on the hdd is that the case here where you make your own?
Hey my iMac makes me put in App Store user/password for Mac OS lion and says incorrect password when right any suggestions??
Sorry I no longer have this to check.
I want to do a Clean Install, and do I need two USB flashdrives if I want to backup some files so I can put them back on my Mac?
After watching about 40 videos.....your is the only one that got me through........I could hug you but I dont realy know you that well. Ty so much Mr Brilliant. Cheers Rhett
Awesome Rhett. I am glad the video helped. 🤓👍🏻
@dell11700 Time Machine or a backup.
Hey I have a macbook late 2008 model. I want a clean install of mac os x Lion. I Don't have the wifi or wired internet connection, I use Wireless 3g USB. Is it possible to skip through the startup steps where it asks for the internet connection.? Thanks in advance :)
to change scrolling is in the trackpad pref pane in System preferences
@mugan78 I always do this once per year when an OS update comes out. It clears out all the unused apps and stuff that never gets used. Gets things running sweet again.
@bynahelemaal Yes, see this video ruclips.net/video/ZAwW6BCoaOU/видео.html
Hi dave whats the pros of doing this instead of just installing normally? I dont habe windows or anything like that on my macbook pro is it worth doing it this way?
sir can i do that for High sierra too, like lion?
Possibly.
i tried doing a clean install of lion i went into disk utility to erase the disk for a clean install but it said couldnt unmount disk
Thanks Dave, I really needed that video. You saved me!
Would this work if for whatever reason my hard drivevwas completely erased? Would this install on a blank drive
Thanks for the tutorial! Just finishing the installer. Thanks again!
@lu1slpzstrfkr It doesn't keep your password, when typing one in I was setting it.
@angrywhenroused nope, this is not part of the deal.
Thanks for posting this video. One question though, Did you or do you loose all of your apps with this process?? or your applications don't get affected??? I'd appreciate your response!
Hi dave, is there an option to change the reverse scroll back to the old way?
Is it possible to upgrade straight from Leopard to Lion using this product?

No. You need to have Mac OS X 10.6 (minimum is 10.6.6, but better have 10.6.8). This is applicable in both versions of Mac OS X Lion: the app store version and the Thumb USB drive.
@RokcetScientist1 You can go into the Apple Store and they will help.
Thanks this was so easy to follow I installed Lion on my 17" iMac 2.0GHz, watching this on my iPhone as I did it on my mac great tutorial :)
@jjchucho Yes.
Hi. I got error and I need to reinstall mac os x on my mac air. Thank for your video. As I need to reinstall most of my apps, Can you kindly share some links and videos that contains apps esp ms office???
if I buy a copy of OS X Lion on a apple machine that has Snow Leopard, can I follow your steps and put OS X Lion on a flash drive and install OS X Lion on a apple machine that has only Leopard as the OS?
When I try to erase it shows disk erase failed with the error couldn’t unamount disk plz help me
Sorry, I no longer have this system to check.
Viwk Kesi same

@abby4u Yes, in preferences, trackpad.
