How to Make a Bootable Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 USB Thumb Drive
- Purchase or Re-Download Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 from the Mac App Store
- Find & right-click the "Install OS X Mountain Lion" application in your application's folder
- Click on "Show Package Contents"
- Click on "Contents"
- Click on "Shared Support"
- Double-click to open & mount the "InstallESD.dmg" file.
- Open "Disk Utility" located in the Utilities folder in your Applications
- Click on your USB Thumb Drive or External Hard Drive
- Click on the tap "Restore"
- Drag the USB Thumb Drive or External Hard Drive to the "Destination" location
- Drag the Mac OS X Install ESD to the "Source" location.
- Hit "Restore"
DONE!

OMFG! Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I've followed several instructions on the net on how to do this and they all resulted in a "failure to restore". Your vid did the trick!! (For some reason, dragging InstallESD.dmg can't execute the operation but dragging the volume "Mac OS X Install ESD" does. Anyways, I'm so happy this thing finally worked!! I just subscribed!!

@thegoodguy253 yes, formatted my hard drive meaning it'll erase everything. If you are "upgrading", no, it will not. If it allows you to simply install/upgrade it, it won't delete your things. I did a clean instal which means to format & wipe everything on your computer & start new.

Yes I watched other videos and was getting and error before it copied over so if you watch close and do everything the same it'll work. I got stuck in the disk utility trying to figure out which one to put as the source and which as the destination. Use the exact ones he uses before clicking restore or you'll get an error message. Thanks a million.

This was great! Have had to download Mountain Lion Twice now because the original caused horrendous software problems and although Apple helped me resolve everything with updates it would have saved the 9 hour downloads each time. Lesson learned, Check here FIRST!!!
