- This is how to install Mac OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) on an unsupported Mac using the new MacPostFactor method. MacPostFactor is a continuation of MLPostFactor, and is much easier to use and works much better than MLPostFactor did.
Download form here: macpostfactor.t...
So I got it to work and 10.8 works fine on my mid 2007 macbook. You dont have to create a 2nd partition, if you do it'll take up space and you wont have as much room to add apps and your personal items.
If you want to use all the GB's from your target drive, after you've done the process of mac post factor, restart your computer and click on the recovery drive, click on the 1st option that says update, clean install, then click on clean install, it will install 10.8 or whatever OS you wanted. Then restart your computer and it will load up to the 0S you wanted.
Also use MAC POST FACTOR Version 1.0.1, because its simple and works fine compared to V2.0.1
This method NO longer works sadly. Gets stuck on waiting on you to click skip ad even after clearly clicking Skip ad.
Hunter Yelton.....Same happen to me.
Works fine for Me
update to 2.01
Didn't do that for me
Use an older copy primarily 1.0.1 and older
Thank you, very good guide
Installed ML on my Late 2006 MacBook Pro, runs pretty good with 4GB RAM and an SSD
this is Great. now i am running 10.8.5 on my 2007 macbook. just by follow steps of your video.
thank you very much! good work.
Haha, nice. I followed your last video on the MLPostfactor for my 3,1 Macbook and that lasted for months until I needed updates and couldn't remember how to get them. Then I did an install using this and it went very smooth. Thanks!
This method works folks. But I had a problem with booting loop. So I tried first version of MacPostFactor 1.0.1 and it works like charm! Just now installed Mountain Lion on my Macbook A1181 late 2007 4GB ram, 120GB Kingston SSD. So guys go and try first version. :)
To fix the skip ad issue.. when the blank white screen comes up hold down the mac button and left arrow u will get a blue screen with a link. Drag that link into safari open it up. You will get a skip ad screen. Skip the ad and will come to a page that says please wait with a circle l. Take that link and drag and drop it into the blue box in macpostfactor and everything will go ahead as it's supposed to. It's a temp fix for the time being but I've done it on numerous macs to test and works 100 percent. Remember to rehack your Machine after all updates. Let me know if a video is needed..
what is the "mac button" command?
EPIC, Underrated Comments. ..and username.
Kudos.
dosdude: Thanks for this. I also found another way for a clean install that worked well for me without deleting the old files - I rebooted into OS X Manager and there was a choice for Clean Install. This allowed me to use the Setup Assistant to install some or all of my old files from my other had drive. I chose only the choices for "Setup" and "Files and Folders" listed under my own "User name". This is a great way to go because it resurrected ALL of email boxes with all settings and related folders, and my contact manager, calendars, etc. It would have been a nightmare otherwise. Thanks again for all of your help with this.
+Clinton Carrington Oh, great! No problem.
DOSDUDE1: Great work man. BTW you neglected to mention a YUGE requirement --- must have a core2duo or Xeon machine to create the boot loader via the MacPostFactor method. The updated v.2.01 had lots of legacy system denial messages.
Using this method, why is it important to have Lion installed first? It appears that the target rive is erased before the installation of MacPost Factor begins. I tried with a new partition on the target iMac, and it did not work. Any suggestions?
because if your doing this for a 64 bit/ 32 bit efi mac , you need to already have a
way to manipulate the drive and give a second partition first, and lion
is fairly easy to get to boot , also maybe the last non 64 bit efi boot.
Works very well in 2019, but make sure to use macpostfactor version 1
I just noticed. Do you know where I can find macpostfactor version 1??
hi, i get "click to skip ad". but there is no button. PLEASE HELP ! thanx.
All the Patches are no longer working it appears. Do you have any suggestions, dosdude1? I would like to install Mountain Lion on my MacBook3,1 A1181 Late 2007.
MCPF 1.0.1 image is downloadable and it 'll be ok to copy on USB dongle and boot install !
tip : a bug prevents the OS to show system login interface for unknown reasons on macbook 2,1. Thus be sure to enable auto session login when it's about to create the use account in system preferences !
I have an old late 2006 MacBook Pro 2,1 on lion 10.7.5 and instead of using a usb drive I used the target drive for installation and it finally. worked, I kept using the usb but always stuck on Apple logo so i switched it up and now I have mountain Lion 10.8.5. Thanks for the tips!
Did you put a 2nd partition on the target drive? And what settings did you have for Mac post factor v 2.0.1 before you click on install?
I followed all of the instructions, but when I went to boot up my MacBook pro with the external hard drive selected, it didn't pull up the Install OS X screen but instead one with "reinstall Mac OS X Lion"
@dosdude1, one more time, thanks for the video and for the links! ;) today I was able to download ML from your link and make a clean install on my macbook "early 2008". people like you are very helpful to the community. cheers!
This worked beautifully! At first I had an issue where my ATI 4870 Radeon 512 graphics card would not display my second monitor. I redid the installation but this time clicked the setting in MacPostFactor for 'Upgraded GFX Card' and it worked! Many thanks, dosdude1!!!
+Clinton Carrington For a Mac Pro, you can also use Maverick and Yosemite.
+dosdude1 : Thanks for your reply. I would like to try Yosemite but I see in your comment below that I would no longer have graphics acceleration so it might not make sense. Thanks again for sharing this great idea with all of us. I am thrilled to have my beautiful, trusty old Mac Pro running with ML!
Clinton Carrington That's only for Macs without upgraded graphics. Mac Pros with upgraded graphics will work perfectly fine with Mavericks or Yosemite, with full graphics acceleration.
+Clinton Carrington Can Mac Pros without upgraded graphics cards be used with any of these post Lion OS's?
So apparently the lack of graphics acceleration did bother me so I did use mountain lion. This was a perfect video though
hello I tried your method (mac mlpostfactore) on an imac of 2006 (core 2 duo) 3 go 667 mhz but it crashed at the end when I restarted the computer.
Have you a solution ?
You know I just realized who u were (Colin Mistr) I've been using your guide for over a year and just put 2 to 2 together when I read about your patcher tool back in July or somewhere around there.. Funny shit keep up with the great videos and tools.
Yep, that's right. Glad I could be of help!
I have a question. How long did it take between the skip? My imac 2006 is on the apple logo screen and hasn’t changed for around 10 minutes
I have the same problem. How did you solve it?
MacPostFactor stops everything its doing and just displays error 1. Anybody got a fix for it?
fixed it with installing software updates.
Hung up on the Apple logo. Used v2 to build the installer on a external Sata. Upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion.
Anyone installing DIRECT to TARGET hard-drive, download the version 1.0.1 from the site linked in description above. Before BEFORE running the Macpostfactor software, boot your computer into the hard disc recovery drive (restart + option key, select recovery drive, hit "return"), and then select disk utilities from the menu, and then select the main Hard -drive, and click on the "partition' tab. Select each partition one by one, and then click the "repair" tab, and then "verify permission". Once that's finished, then click on "repair permissions". Make sure you repeat this process for EVERY PARTITION on the target hard-drive. This was the only way I could get my MacBook 4.1 to boot into Mountain Lion after running Macpostfactor.
Hablas bien enrredao blood , tenias que poner de un principio hacer un disco de arranque con macposfactor , y lo otro es solo preparar el disco antes de la reinstalacion del sistema operativo
Hi Dosdude - I realize that this is a very old tutorial, but I'm hoping that you could help me out. It seems that there is a problem with MacPostFactor and a built -in advertisement that gets stuck and the patching cannot continue. I'm hopeful that you might see this and take a moment of your time to help me figure a way to continue to install ML on an old laptop I have. Thanks so much for all of your efforts and generous sharing!
I would advise using NexPostFactor instead, found here: parrotgeek.com/npf/
@@dosdude1 Thanks so much for your reply, Collin! Unfortunately, I have tried that and am getting the "prohibited" symbol when trying to boot my MacBook 2,1 with the USB drive created. I really appreciate you bothering with my questions, as it is rather trivial for an old laptop and I am certain your time is much better spent elsewhere! Also, a big thanks for all the efforts you have done with the recent macOS versions and enormous respect for your abilities!
I tried it several times, my C2D MacBook just stucks at the apple boot screen. Hasn't worked at all for me
Great video dosedude1! I followed your steps and it seems to work just fine on my late 2006 iMac :) I have read many comments to see how well this works and it seems like many people don't listen when you said that you have to use the Mountain Lion installer from the APP STORE (10.8.4 or lower) to get it to work properly. Other then that the people who listen seem to be very happy with this. I do have a quick question if you don't mind me asking? Is it worth upgrading to 10.8.5 over 10.7.5? I am fairly new to the Mac world ( been using Macs for about a year no ) so is there any performance increase or memory management improvements? The main reason why I upgraded my late 2006 20 inch iMac was to download a fun app at the app store to requirers 10.8 but other then that don't know if anything is improved. Thanks for the badass video!! :)
+Warren McClure Mountain Lion is MUCH better than Lion. It's more lightweight, the animations are quicker and less laggy, and the memory management (a major problem in Lion) is much improved. Overall systems running Mountain Lion are much quicker than they are with Lion.
Sweet! Thanks for replying. Im glad I did this update because even thought the late 2006 iMac is older its still usable with the right upgrades and now this update only helps it out even more.
How long did it take for your 2006 iMac to boot from the new system? Mine has been on the apple screen for about 45mins and nothing is happening, I followed all the steps correctly etc
+Toby Bartholomew not long at all. I want to say like 3 or 4 mins since it is using a hard drive disk. Also did you make sure to download 10.8.4? It has to be 10.8.4 because if its 10.8.5 it wont work since its to new. Sorry for the late reply I thought I already replied but I guess not
How long did it take to boot once you booted into the external drive?
+Hi-Tech Casio Around 2 minutes.
When I reboot, I'm getting a "Your computer restarted because of a problem." error continuously, and I can't seem to boot into ANY OS?!!
Is there any way to get that installer without paying? (os installer)
I'm getting stuck where it saids skip ad , tried to drag to safari but nothing happens
No idea. I created 4 times the stick on a sierra hi mac. Then the program gaves ‚successful created‘ vut skipped to copy the os x packages... than tried on. A 10.7 mac, and finally i created the stick, but on boot the hd poots over and the serup not starts. Than i tried the verson 1.0.1 of the softwarey same thing. I don‘t understand :(
After several failed attempts, I read a post in a forum that suggested creating the installer on 10.7 was problematic. We tried two different external drives and both resulted in a white boot screen with no disk activity detected. I downloaded MacPost Facto on our newer mac, created the installer, returned to the 2006 imac and now installation is underway. The only difference I noted was an ad that popped up on the newer mac. I waited to skip it and proceeded. Hope this helps someone else!
Huh, interesting. Didn't realize it had issues on 10.7, as technically that's what it's designed to run on.
Hi, I’ve purchased Mac OS X Mountain Lion in the App Store but I can’t install the installer on any of my machines (even my 2014 Mac Mini). Is there any way to get it?
It just sticks on Skip Ad on a blank white screen.
Quick question, i have a mac mini 2,1'and i upgraded it at 10.8.5 but when i restarted the mac it shows only the apple logo flashing with the question mark folder and it wont start mlpost factor.
What to do in that case?
Can see the partitions when start back up
i have mac 6.1 and i dont have any of those can you make a video about that?
Great! Just a question:can I use the same process to install it to one of my internal ssds (on a hackintosh) an then directly swap it into my late 2006 macbook pro? It would be straightforward
hi when i would like to boot usb whith this method i have loading circle and nothing show , why?
My MacBook is now stuck at the Apple logo after i’ve clicked on reboot in macpostfactor. What can I do?
I have this exact hardware .. doesn't work for me hangs on reboot .. please help!
Is the erasing of the destination drive required if I already have something like Lion installed already?
Very good video. I have a question however. Can I somehow use my ML install that was turned into a bootable USB/DMG? I don't have the original app. If not, will the version that is being sold right now by Apple work? Thank you in advance, trying to install ML on Macbook 4,1 for compatibility reasons.
+Garirry Unfortunately, anything newer than Mountain Lion will not work, and you can't just use the BaseSystem DMG. You'll need to download the official App Store copy, which can be easily downloaded using a torrent. I'll probably upload a copy and post a link here at some point.
***** That's what I thought. Yeah, no, I'm not planning installing anything higher than ML. Just for compatibility for certain programs and maybe stability. Thanks for your reply.
+dosdude1 I downloaded the app you posted here in the comments and I successfully upgraded my computer. I couldn't place the installer on my USB, so I had to directly install onto my computer. The update process also went smoothly. I appreciate your help!
Just wanted to let you know that after many pulling out my hair nights I finally have mountain lion installed on my Mac.
And to say thanx for your help.....it finally worked with a copy of Macpostfactor 1.01, Thx again. Dave
Hi Dave could you share Macpostfactor 1.01?
all you have to do is go to "free macpostfactor download" at the top of the page is an option for older versions. click on that and select the build you want! 1.0.1 worked really well. please let me know how it works out.
Also if your still having problems with the hack feel free to give me a call. I know what's it's like not having any luck.
So if you want call (609) 408-7166. Keep my number a secret.......lol
Hi Dave it didn´t work... have skype?
no i don't …just give a call. i can tell you what i did.
thank you first download that actually worked :D
Hi Dosdude1, My Mountain Lion DVD is totally scratched up. I would like to install on a Mac Pro 1,1 with a GPU I removed from a Mac Pro 5,1. Is it available on your web page? Thanx...
Why do we have to install Wine on the Mac?
I get stuck on "fetching adfly URLs" it says "Ad fly URLs are empty! This shouldn't happen!..." any suggestions?
I did this with the 10.8.4 app, and then I try updating to 10.8.5 then it said update failed restarting.. But.. It never reboots, then I force restart, then it won't boot.
How can uninstall ml post factor?? i can not do a partition for windows after install it and now I need it...
mine was when booting the apple screen, and it didn't come out of that
I am stuck in boot loop, when it reboots after rehacking it won’t boot back into OS X
Wonder, if I can get some help over here.
I see the OS X Hackers and it loads
Than I get the Your computer restarted of a problem. Press any key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up.
got it up and running after i replaced my bootcamp partition with the macpostfactor instsallation.
I'm trying to install an nvidia gt710 but keep getting the "you must restart this mac" error before it boots. any thoughts?
gentle dude1 I have your same mac mini mid 2007 , the M.lion is ok but no wi-fi , It see the line but after the key password it doesn't work , can you hepl me . I do 90- to arrive a 100 with your help .please answer soon . I used Mpost factor V0.2.2.
Hi. My Mac Pro 2008 (3,1) that I updated to Mountain Lion using this about a month ago is now reporting that Mojave is available to update. I assume I cannot install this update from the App Store but must instead download your new installer for that? Thanks
Which Mac OS hack will run well on my MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (Black-08); and is it worth the expense to upgrade to an SSD and max out the RAM to 6GB?
Its Not Starting Setup Installation after boot please help me
How do I change the weird looking dock? It's now grey/black.. Installed with MFPostFactor
After you use MacPostFactor to upgrade, can you restore from a time machine backup taken from the older OS? Anyone done this successfully?
dosedude1: Very cool, thanks for setting me straight! I will give it a go. I assume that the way to do this upgrade is to download the Yosemite file from Apple and then go through the same exercise with MacPostFactor that I did with ML (?)
+Clinton Carrington Yep, just do that exactly.
For your opinion It could be installed in a PC?
Anyone installing DIRECT to TARGET hard-drive, BEFORE running the Macpostfactor install, boot your computer into the hard disc recovery drive (restart + option key, select recovery drive, hit "return"), and then select disk utilities from the menu, and then verify and repair the permissions for every PARTITION on the target hard-drive. This was the only way I could get my MacBook 4.1 to boot into Mountain Lion after running Macpostfactor.
Any advice for why I get a -1 and something about how my OS is too new and It disabled a thumb drive
hi i tried all og the thisng that you siad but i cannot goes thru. iam using mac mini 207nnid
doesn't work just boots back into lion when i select the drive
Intersting thing is that my backup of 10.7.5 os is booting from external hd but 10.8 not
Can you send the link for this method "on this Mac"?
When I install the os on version 10.8.4 On my Macmini 2,1 update to 8.5 and Hack it again the WiFi and Bluetooth icons disappear from the dock what do I need to do ?
(I got the installer from your site)
I'm trying to install mountain lion on the macbook hhd through v2.0.1, but gets stuck after the second skip ad and says please wait, at the bottom.
Instead of using 2.0 look up the 1.0 version he is using
hello,
I need some help to install Mountain Lion on my iMac 20'' fin 2006, 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB.
I tried MLPostFactor and it failed just for the last reboot (before install mountain lion on harddisk ).
After I tried with MacPostFactor and it failed too...
Could you help me, please ?
Thanks
Samuel Izoard (in France)
Hey, dosdude1, how are you? Thank you for all your apps and hacks, they're being useful for me for a long time!
But I had a strange problem trying to install Mountain Lion on a Mac mini 1,1. When I boot with the pendrive, it shows a blinking folder, seems like the error when HDD is missing or the OSX isn't installed, but it blinks on an odd way.
What possible happened? I'm trying to install 10.8.6 version.
I am stuck in a something went wrong boot loop any help appreciated.
Where can I get OS X Mountain Lion? I's not in the Apple appstore.
I had a Yosemite installer so I just did that on my 2007 MacBook. I'm too lazy to plug it into Ethernet and wait for that big ass download.
will the server app install OK on this? I've noticed that server app from the app store doesn't like some later patched OS's (Catalina)
I just tried this on an old Mac Pro 1,1 with upgraded video card and Intel Xeon X5355 2.66 GHz,8M,1333MHZ Quad Core Procs and was unable to get it to work. Has anyone had success with this model Mac?
Hello,
Great video.
If I choose to install on a partition on the main drive, is it required to do the erase step as you did on the video? Or it is just continue the install?
Thanks.
+André Domingues You can just make a second partition using Disk Utility.
Hey there. Is there anything I can do with my MacBook 2.1? 4gb ram, 64bit... It's still running snow leopard 10.6.8
@ 5:13 you said "Macpro", but the screen looks like it's showing MacBook; will I need a Mabook pro to do this, or will this work on the late 2007 Macbook?
I meant MacBook, said Mac Pro by mistake. It'll work fine on a 2007 MacBook, just make sure to select the proper option if it's a GMAX3100-based system (MacBook 3,1 or 4,1).
***** Oh okay, I figured as much but wanted to be sure. lol
While we're talking: just to clarify, a late 2007 [white] Macbook should be fine, right?
candiigurl7893 Yes.
Mine is a mid 2007 macbook and it worked.
Will it work on Mac from late 2013 and newer? It's because Mac from late 2013 are not supported to run 10.8 they are unsupported so will it work with macpostfactor?
This method doesn't work on my MacBook early 2008 4,1. When Macpostfactor finish the install on usb, i restart de laptop, hold the alt key, click on the installer and simply doesn't boot. Goes to my main partition 10.7.5.
Try using the "on this computer" method. If that doesn't work, then I'd recommend trying MLPostFactor and see if you have any luck with that. Also a different USB drive may help also.
will it work for macbook air early 2008? original macbook air 1,1
EXCUSE ME . IS IT POSSIBLE IT ASK A PASSWORD TO CHANGE SETTINGS ? ONE PASSWORD THAT IS NOT MINE ( TO ENTER LOG-IN) BUT ANOTHER ONE ??? THANKS !!!
Great info. I do have a question. I am a Mac newbie. The Mountain Lion installs I have seen are .dmg files. Has goes one get an .app file or convert a .dmg file to .app.
Some may have the proper app file in them, however if you mount them and the volume name is "InstallESD" or "BaseSystem", then it is NOT the correct file.
Hey, I did all the steps you showed and it's all worked great until I go to boot my iMac (late 2006 20") from the macpostfactor drive I made. It's been on the same white screen with the grey apple logo for about 30mins, I know you paused your video but didn't say how long for, any thoughts? Thanks
+Toby Bartholomew It should only take about 1-2 minutes. It appears as though you've used the Mountain Lion 10.8.5 installer app, which doesn't work for some reason. Try downloading the app for 10.8.4 or older.
Can we upgrade then from Lion to El Cap, then so on to Catalina??
It works on macbook air 2008?
Hello. Where can I download the iso file of this OS out of tune appstore?
Hi. I tried to install on a 2007 white c2d Macbook it seems to go fine until I plug usb stick on Mac an boot and ML INSTALLER STARTS but then it hangs on half way. It is stuck there now since 30 minutes. Any help?
same problem here
my installer wants me to skip an unskippable ad.
Can I download a installer online somewhere
would've this work on a powerpc based mac?
This worked for me with the exact same upgraded model. Wondering how to install windows 7 on it now. For me, there is always a problem with the boot camp assistant. It's either stuck on downloading windows support, or if i skip that and try to load a win7 iso for creating a bootable media, it says it needs a windows 8 iso, spite the fact that the assistant said that "this machine supports windows 7 only" in the beginning.
Don't use the Bootcamp assistant... Just use Disk Utility to create a FAT partition, then boot off a Windows 7 installation DVD and install to that partition.
Thanks! I cloned the hdd before experimenting, but it wouldn't boot. I now realised to use clover configurator to see what the deal was with the EFI partitions. It wasn't copied, so i copied it. Hoping for cloning success now. Cheers!
Sorry for jumping ahead, topic-wise.
hi. I installed Mavericks 10.9.1 works ok but dont have WIFI anymore. As I already have a mac mini 2,1 from 2007 with Core 2 Duo, I just installed 4GB of RAM but won´t boot. That means I don´t have the proper firmware for that? Can you help with that? Please?
Note: And when I update to 10.9.5 screw everything up! Dont do it guys!
hi dude
can you tell why my Mac mini from 2007 does not boot with this tutorial.
macpostfactor says its all right after creation of the OS but when I choose that bootable partition with mountain lion nothing happens.??? just get apple logo with no loading
I'm not sure. Check your USB drive, or maybe try doing the whole process on the Mac Mini, using the "On This Mac" option in MacPostFactor.
Hey Collin, do you still use a Hackintosh as your main machine?
No, I use a Mid-2010 Mac Pro 5,1 as my main machine now.
I am unable to boot from the macpostfactor disk that I made. It hangs on the OS10 hackers splach screen and then goes back to a black screen and continues this cycle over and over again. I have a copy of ML purchased from the apple store and used the other choice as I am installing it on a 2006 macpro 1.1 with upgraded chips. I have made a MCPF USB drive from my sons mac mini and made a MCPF drive on my mac pro and they both behave the same. Any Ideas?
+paul south Try to find a copy of the 10.8.4 installer. For some reason the latest 10.8.5 one seems to cause issues.
