    I cant seem to think clearly when I'm barraged with content from sun-up to sun-down, i walk around in a haze where I cant even form cohesive thoughts, often entering apps like rooms in my house, completely forgetting why i went there. I'm taking a hiatus and returning back to sanity off line, thank you!

      Yeah, I feel like even more than a phone addiction it’s a content addiction. Find myself so often just wanting to fill the silence with something

      Yes! :D It really is the opposite action to meditation. Social Media platforms enable us to get away with the behaviour of constantly searching and never being satisfied, rather than realising that this is a deeper problem to be solved!

      @@SonamHoani So true. That unnameable subtle restlessness is apparently one of the last hindrances to go. Fortunately over here there is little social media and the restlessness is only occasionally and mildly present, mostly for metabolic reasons. Thank you for your thoughtful videos.

    My perception of social media really changed when I noticed that using it is almost never a conscious decision. It kind of just happens and I get sucked into RUclips for hours. Very rarely will I actively decide that I want to watch a specific video, instead of just randomly browsing my usual platforms and looking at whatever is presented to me. As a very technology oriented person(I study computer science) I really believe in the potential of these technologies and even social media can be a very useful and meaningful tool but it is so hard to use it that way and not get distracted by all the meaningless stuff in between. Your step to quit for good is probably very beneficial for your mental health and overall life quality. I am still trying to figure out how I want to handle this topic in my personal life, so hearing your perspective on it is very insightful. Thank you for the video!

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  2 года назад +2

      Thanks you Lars what a lovely and constructive message! I think for me it’s that same question about meaning. And I have the same habits as you, getting sucked in and then an hours gone and none of the videos I watched were a conscious choice! I’m definitely not an expert on the topic, but I did notice that I just wanted to think about it a little more, and when I experimented with one week off I thought… damn… it was better before I got these social medias. But, for me that was the biggest question; Where’s the line? Because tech is good and I have watched a loooot of content on topics which are very important to me! I only feel I am now able to leave it behind, because on the whole, it’s now, not offering me a lot more other than distraction for the in between moments… hmmm 🤔 I should probably start writing my next video 🤣

    I like to do a social media shabbos where I stay off it from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. (I live away from my home country so I mainly use FB to stay in touch with my family and friends)

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  2 года назад +4

      I find it interesting the different ways we can come up with giving ourselves some space. I took Instagram off my phone’s Home Screen just so I’d see it and click on it less. I wish there was a less profitable social media app… that worked more like a next generation phone book. Because, I would use Facebook in the same way as you… But, I don’t want the adds and general internet culture impressions. I guess I’m on their for my friends and family and I really don’t want the extra stuff they’re offering, maybe even a FB lighter version would work! 🤣

    As you stated, the algorithms are adjusted to encourage and promote addiction. Children are most at risk of developing addiction, shortened attention span, learning disorders from overuse of social media.

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  2 года назад +4

      It’s crazy! Especially when we haven’t considered how we use these sort of technologies and in my corner of the world it’s not surprising to see VERY young children using them! Two steps forward and yet another step back…

    I only have RUclips on my phone now. I used to have Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and iFunny. However, I noticed that I would waste a lot of time on my phone. Even if I spent the time on my phone, I would still get bored. I even wanted to stop, but it was really hard to say no to just scrolling for dopamine. Good vid!

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  2 года назад +3

      Such a good point! I remember scrolling and getting that dopamine hit, but also eventually feeling dissatisfied with my feed. It was like unless every post that came up was sensational, it wasn’t enough! That didn’t stop me scrolling though, I kept on searching for a post that was good enough… like an addict. Also, I’ve never heard of iFunny? I’ll have to look that up, out of interest 😄

    The Zuckerberg point is spot on and hilarious. Great points. The moments I'm most content in life are during and just after a nature immersion, and it's because I can get bored, be more physical, and live in rhythm with nature not notifications.

    Today i deleted my instagram accounts, my facebook, my discord and everything else between. Ive tried quitting before and was so addicted i fell back into the trap. I am excited to stay strong and get through this. I only have youtube on my laptop too, that way i can be more intentional about the content i view and also so i dont spend too much time on youtube (my desk isnt the most comfortable place) im excited to view the world without a mobile phone in my hand, or photographing moments for the social media accounts, instead snapping one pic for myself and just being present in the moment. I am nervous but i think this time i will be able to stick it out and become free again.

    I have always been a slow, an cautious(!) adopter of new technology and I instinctively disliked the thought of displaying my life on a public platform like Facebook or Instagram. Plus I knew I didn't want to devote the time necessary to make my own posts. I nearly succumbed to a Facebook account at one point but drew back when I realised the above. Plus I got slightly panicked when I received a "friend" request from someone I used to know way back. I didn't know if it was real or not! So I shut it down fast... I think frankly I have saved myself a lot of time and trouble over the years. My husband used to have an account and has, inevitably, lost touch with a few friends since getting rid of it. But real friends will always be with you and will communicate with you personally. And we have time to do things that are important to us and that is sheer gold to me. I know I have missed out on a couple of opportunities because communication was over Facebook only (a local vegan society I was interested in for example) but hey, life goes on and there are other opportunities. Just getting your life back will be worth any lost opportunities there may be that's for sure.

      COMPLETELY AGREE 😃 I think if I could have thought clearly from the beginning I never would’ve gone on… But, I even remember the peer-pressure to be on there! I’m happy to now have that time back in my life for more quality moments of life 😄
