I think there needs to be a balance between an obsessively clean home and an over cluttered dirty home. Example, I am not going to wash my curtains weekly or clean every surface of my home daily or every second day. My home is neither spotless nor dirty or over cluttered. It’s lived in with five humans and one dog as well as a couple of fish. Life is far too short to obsess over cleaning. Regardless of how spotless our homes are, we’re still only here for a short time. Live life and be happy. Spend time with those you love the most.

My mother was obsessive about cleaning our home and yard. It’s all she did and never seemed to enjoy anything in life. She was always sweaty and exhausted living on coffee and cigarettes. Us kids basically lived outside while she cleaned away day and night. I never learned how to clean and have an aversion to it because of my upbringing. It’s odd, isn’t it? I grew up in an immaculate home but really don’t know what is normal vs excessive cleaning. I keep up with the basics but I get angry inside when I clean. I’m trying to find a balance between clean and tidy without the stress and anger associated with it.

I love this! My home is clean enough. When people stop by I don't apologize for the messes and some clutter because my family is busy and happy. I am trying to be more aware of not bringing extra things in that we don't need. Balance is definitely the answer.🥰

I have a friend who wants to emulate my home hitch I find bizarre as it’s just lived in but relatively tidy ( we do live in it), but she does have 3 teenage boys - enough said! I have no problem with people dropping by they take me as they find me, but I would love to get rid of a lot of things and live a minimalist life.

You got it! People with tidy homes don't shop as a hobby. They don't buy a surplus of items or keep a roomful of extra supplies & food. They buy only what's needed & maybe 1 back up . Whenever a new item is brought into the home, an old item goes out! It's sometimes hard to do, you don't always feel like doing it, but it is the answer to an always tidy home:)

    • @renastone9355

I don't shop as a hobby. But I do kept extra staples around - so we always have a ready package of paper towels or toilet paper, and storage bags for the kitchen, aluminum foil, etc., around. for when something runs out. (We have drawers and cupboards where these things live.) And I don't take something out when something new comes in. (More often than not, the new thing coming in is a book... ;) Although at times we do make an effort to cull - mostly so we can keep our "Free Little Library" and our neighbors' Free Little Libraries - well stocked.

I was raised extremely tidy and clean. My mum was raised the same. My grandmother too. I also noticed neuroticism building up in these females, a lack of unconditional love and peace. I learned at the end of my twenties to finally let go. I am still tidy. I still like it clean. But I can fully accept it when I am too tired to clean. It can wait a few more days. Much more love. Much more peace. No more female neuroticism.

This is a really good point. I find it hard to sit down and play with my kids or even read a book with them if the space is unkept. My mother basically said if you have a messy space you dont deserve to have free time. Dessert wasn't served on the weekends until the living room was spotless including dusting. I see that bleeding over into the way I look at my still quite young children. My husband actually raised an eyebrow the other day when they were sitting and playing a game, and I asked why are you sitting down when there's so much cleaning to do! It was 9pm. I am trying to do better now especially since we are renovating an old house and there's very few finished spaces.

@@gloriack7976What kids remember is not the cleanliness of the house (even though I am happy my mother taught me that), but they remember if they were loved, played with, listened to, encouraged. But yes, I also had to learn (I did so by living in incredibly dirty but loving communities for a couple of years). I like to use the “So what” method. Laundry isn’t done yet. So what. Hallways is dirty again. So what. Again, it doesn’t mean my house is dirty. It just isn’t a hospital 😅 And it’s cozy. I remember my mom washing my hair every day! Until I was the one in class who always got lice. Until another mother said: “Your kid is too clean. Let her get dirty” 😅 I think you are an amazing mum, you care and you love. I am sure your kids love you a lot too. And I hope you enjoy the weekly cleaning with your kids as much as I did with my mum (we always had a great lunch, we listened and danced to funny music). But I also hope you can look at the dust on the table and think… So what 😊❤

@@barbarakelly1916 this is an interesting point certainly. I think we do need to have a certain amount of "control" over our homes and personal spaces, but I guess the difference would be an extremely micromanaging manager or a calm level headed manager. Working well with ebb and flow. The more out of control we feel in other areas, the more micromanaging we get in our home.

What I do find difficult now is that my husband does something he calls "surface filing" which means leaving his stuff on tables, sofas and chairs. My daughter dumps her stuff all over the place, not much has a home... I have given her baskets and bowls to contain her stuff, but it makes no difference. But I don't want to be a nag. I'm reminded of the sayings, "Clean as you go', and "It's always easier to clean a clean house. I've mentioned before and will mention again that model/actress/author Isabella Rossellini told about her mother Ingrid Bergman telling the children, "Never leave the room empty-handed", and gave the examples of take a glass from your room back to the kitchen or return a magazine to the living room.
For myself I've given away just over 50 books that I've never read and would only have read if I lived longer than I'm probably going to live. There's a twinge of sadness in not experiencing the reading of those books, but more than that I feel better at the removal of a burden and stress and at having more space and peace.

I dislike unloading the dishwasher, complaining it “takes 10 minutes “… actually I set a timer and it took 90 seconds…..seriously…major lesson learned…what took 10 minutes was the internal emotional upheaval I put myself thru to do a job I disliked that took 90 seconds. The house has no excess junk in it! The kitchen however, has LOTS of multiples, but it's all stored away. For example, there's two dozen spatulas, 6 cookie sheets, 3 pairs of scissors, 3 veggie peelers, 6 big ladles, 2 instant pots (6qt, 8qt), 2 blenders (a VitaMix and a Ninja), etc. Plus, a food pantry bigger than my bedroom with enough food for 3 years!

Well, I have a lot (a lot!) of books, as well as a whole bunch of family photos. Luckily, there are bookshelves in most of the rooms of our house, so the books and pictures (the ones that aren't on the wall) have a place to live. And yes, I discovered as an adult (I'm nearly 70 now), that it really isn't necessary to have to "look for the scissors" every time you need scissors- you just have a spot where they always live. (My mother was definitely "not" organized). All that being said, I find the kitchen that Mr. Becker is recording from unrealistic, unless he just relies on take-out food. We have a toaster, a coffee maker, a coffee grinder, a Kitchen Aide mixer, a bread box, two containers for cooking tools (for non-stick pots and regular). And a knife block that holds 35 knives. And a microwave. Hauling what we need to cook a meal every time would be exhausting, to say the least. It's a working kitchen (and yes, we keep it clean), and it seems the height of inefficiency - and of caring more about form than function - to hide everything you use to cook away somewhere. (We do have a corner cupboard where our small appliances live). Just my two cents.

The COVID epidemic, economic and political conditions, and supply chain issues factor into the "hauls" habit. People want to feel secure in uncertain times, as well as to save money. My parents grew up in the 1930's Depression years; and as adults always had a stockpile of goods, behavior based on their memories.

I've always done these things naturally, but didn't realize most people didn't do this until I moved in with my gf (now wife). I remember when we started dating, she said she cleaned her place on Saturdays, and I was confused. I was like what do you mean you clean? What is there to clean? You live alone. What she meant is she had to clean up all the dishes and clothes and miscellaneous things she'd leave scattered around her place throughout the week. I've never had to reserve time for cleaning because I've always cleaned as I made a mess, or I put my clothes in the laundry basket immediately, or the dishes in the dishwasher immediately. The only cleaning I need to do is to dust furniture or vacuum. People make living in a tidy and clean space very difficult for themselves because they have the wrong approach. I guess you have to enjoy the process, which I do. My wife hates doing laundry because she wants it to be "finished", but I view laundry as just a weekly process that I enjoy. I enjoy hanging up my shirts to dry, folding up shirts, etc. I even hang my socks to dry because they're really high quality and I don't want to ruin them. I view laundry as something I get to do, rather than something I have to do. My wife treats her clothes like a stranger's clothes. When her laundry is done, she'll let it sit in a pile to be folded. Usually sits there for days at a time before she makes time to put it away.

    • @barbarakelly1916

The "I get to do this" mindset is very positive. It illustrates and promotes self care. The "chore/ I have to do this" mindset comes from a more negative, close to "victim/ poor me"identity. The degree of one's creativity is also a factor in how we view and do household management.

After watching this video I went from room to room and took three items that were “unnecessary”…put them in a box and took them to the Salvation Army before I could change my mind. I’ll do this every weekend until I get down to necessities. I did that with my garage a few years ago and it’s so satisfying to pull my car into a tidy clutter free garage with just the few tools I need for gardening, a shop vac, and car cleaning products. Amazing how clutter and excess stuff can create stress in your life.

@@Jack.of.all.learning Jack…buckle up. I did a full kitchen and bathroom remodeling job concurrently while living there. Using my 2nd bathroom to wash dishes was not ideal and felt incredibly disgusting. Plan on dining out if possible or at least paper plates (biodegradable ). My biggest advice - if you get annnoyed and ready to blow your stack due to the dust, noise, and people traipsing through your house all day: Walk away. As soon as you feel the pressure - go for a walk…a bike ride…something away from the mess. It’s a sanity saver 😉It will be worth it at the end…but it is stressful. With less clutter you've already tackled a big stressor during a remodel. The other thing…cover everything and INSIST they put down floor protection. You got this Jack!

Only a few days when pregnant/post-partum or in the case of unforeseen/spontaneous activities has our house been messy before bed-and even then it gets done asap. We care about tidiness so we just pick up super quick (and only hand-wash dishes). Deep cleaning is a different story though 🙃

I have done this for 52years.

  • @Blubes23
    @Blubes23 25 дней назад +4

It’s not that hard. Just do things right away.
Also, no, depression, adhd and those thypical «excuse» diagnoses are no excuses! Yes it’s a contributor- but you make the choise to let the depression or whatever it is to control your life each day. I know this is triggering for some to read, so I’ll add in how I was so severely depressed and suicidal for years, that things got out of hand. Aswell as ptsd and eating disorder, and a physical disability.
It thook a choice every single day then the choices multiplied by the day, and now it’s me in control, not that diagnosis in control.
And go figure, I’d rather be depressed and have a complete meltdown down in a neat, clean tidy home, than to have that upon other stresses like clutter, dirt and unhygienic environment.
You can believe it or not, but “it’s not working for everyone” is outdated, usually the ones screaming this have not even tried, or “i can’t just tell myself to be happy”, well yes you can. You can force your ass up from bed and make yourself the favourite cuppa coffee, if that makes you happy in the moment. Or other things. You control you, unless you choose to let IT Control you.
Edit; not saying your gonna be happy constantly, no one is and emotions are a part of life. Emotion, reactive and accountability regulating however is a life’s work.

Besides it, I had a new job and - it tirned out that it is a messy place. I get tired only when I step in there. Now, I should make my place tudy in my work and at home, I have eyhausted amout of repairing work to do - if I want to see what I want. Besides, I have three cats who lose lots of hair daily. When i was a kid, I'd make my bed while still in bed. Easiest clean up/tidy job to do. When i divorced, I'd tidy up the bed the same way. Why sweat the small stuff? Perfection is saved for when it's actually needed. If you're happy in your home that YOU have created, then so be it. If you want it cleaner or more organized, then do it. Dont be lazy about yourself. If your ocd, obsessed w cleanliness, worry what others think of a tiny stain on carpet but otherwise a clean home then you need to work on yourself to feel and be comfortable.
