A very profound remark my husband once made after we visited the chaotic, not so clean and overflowing house of his old mother: i want a home that is small and empty enough so that I can manage it myself and not be dependent on others to help me. To me - as someone who has survived cancer but is still in fragile health - this is such a good point of departure. If you have less energy or you are growing old it's really convenient to have a simple life and overseeable home. It saves you a lot of time, energy and frustration!

Even if you have youth and energy on your side. It's much easier to have time for family, friends, and volunteer work/hobbies if you don't have a huge home to oversee.

    5. Free up closet space.

@@louannhuber2651 Yah. It helped me see that even tho I had too much “stuff,” once I cleared out the junk, I saw that I actually was lacking in some areas. I was just keeping a lot of old “useless dusties” I didn’t even like or want or need. I guess it’s the concept of “making room for better” Bcuz if we fill it all up with useless or mediocre junk, then there’s not enough room for the good stuff that really serves us better or that we just really like/enjoy. But for me mostly it’s just intention. Instead of operating from chaos and confusion, now working to operate with a lot more purpose. I found it ironic how all that junk was masking what was lacking and most needed. It’s like having ten thousand spoons when you really just need a knife. And you get lost in the the spoons (or just get used to making do with trying to cut with spoons and even if you had a great knife, you have trouble finding it. Or some folks ya know. Like me. I didn’t even realize I needed a knife-figuratively speaking, of course lol).

A junk drawer is the one thing that I refuse to have in my home. As a youngster, it was my job on a Saturday morning to tidy the ‘junk drawer’ which was fun to start with; then I both realised and worked out that every item belonged to somebody in our home. That’s when I changed the modus operandi.
I sorted everything into piles as to who I thought it belonged to. Left each pile on each bed with a note which said ‘If anything in this pile does not belong to you, place it in the cardboard box that is on the landing, anything not claimed will go into the rubbish bin’.
My parents took me to task for what I did, but eventually realised that it was the right thing to do.
I’m nearly 70 and from that day to this, I have never had a junk drawer in any home that I have lived in.
Motto: Don’t put it down. Put it away. 😂

The concept seems so simple, no nonsense. Once you start decluttering the process becomes emotional, maybe painful. Starting small trickles to the bigger tasks. Because I have a large garage I have become a depot for my siblings minamalist approach which frees up their own space but allows them to hold on from arms length. Shelf by shelf, container by container I’m eliminating. This stuff took years to accumulate so I’ve allowed myself time to sort, donate or throw away. Two generations of things, ends here!

We have other ways of thinking and feeling, some of us are artists and appreciaters , and collectors of materials for art and for future needs, for self and others, especially in these crazy times, more than “regular”people. Look at some of the interior design channels who celebrate people with rich colorful, sumptuous, and creative environments. I do want a clearer environment, but the usual ways don’t work for me.

We removed NINE 55-gallon trash bags of pure trash out of her kitchen. This wasn't even dishes or pots and pans, it was trash. She kept trash in her cupboards.
When we went through the pantry and the way-back parts of her cupboards, I found things in there that I'd put there when I organized her cupboards IN HIGH SCHOOL. Like 93 boxes of Jello, some with the purple aniline dye prices marked on them -- so, from the early '60s. Fifty-some boxes of pudding mix kept them company. I asked my mom why she kept so much jello and pudding. She said she was getting old, and she wanted to be able to offer her son something to eat when he came to work for her (in his 70s) and pudding was something she could do.
We won't even mention the feet-high stacks of reused aluminum foil, the glass and plastic jars, the paper and plastic bags, taking up the first four feet of space from the floor to waist high, in the pantry. Nine garbage bags. That was only the beginning.

This is exactly why I had to move out of the home I shared and into my own apartment. My best friend still lives in the home, and every time I visit, it just stresses me out. My apartment is my sanctuary. I’m in the process of making it “warm”. Two throw pillows (on the bare sofa I don’t like but was gifted to me), and trying to choose the right shade of warm soft velvety pink/lilac/taupe paint for the walls.
Update: Wow, it’s been a month since I wrote this? I’ve since had the walls painted a lovely soft dusty mauve (Ben Moore Rose Dust-1010), purchased two soft pink throw pillows, repurposed a lavender throw, and added two smaller print pillows, which tie in all the pinks, mauves, purples, dark blues, and greens of the room. I know it sounds like a lot on a loveseat, but I very rarely have company, and it covers most of the sofa. Besides, this is for me.

I don’t use these items on a regular basis, but like insurance, I feel it’s important to have them on hand. Do you have or store emergency items?

I do. I've decluttered a lot, and still find more things I don't have a use for anymore...
Being prepared for emergencies isn't clutter. And because it's not needed every day, you can keep it in storage boxes under a spare bed, in a storage cupboard, a laundry, cellar or garage. Yes, there's work involved in organising it, but it saves me having to go shopping more than once a month- saving both time and money- and gives me peace of mind.

He’s donated a few suits at work (he’s a substance abuse/mental health counselor; these items are for clients when they’re ready to get back into the workplace). We would like to bring the suits and shirts that are in pristine condition, to a place that specialize in men’s attire (like Dress for Success, for women). Any suggestions?

Not only does a sign used as an example discourage, me, and likely the woman who put it up, what about her husband? Does she think he will ever want to help in the laundry room with that sentiment in his face? Reminding him every time he sees it, how she continually meditates, on this seriously demeaning way she thinks about him. If she wants something different from what she has, and likes signs, a more encouraging sign would serve her far better.

"Convenience fallacy" isn't fallacy for bees and butterflies - they're visual organizers and need their everyday-used things out. Even as a cricket, there are things I always leave out because it really is too much of a bother to take them out every time I use it (I tested it, and decided it was too much work to put away and take out every time). I agree with you on the rest.

You just hit a NO GO with deleting duplicates. When others couldn’t find cleaning supplies I was fine. We never keep only one of a kind since we don’t live in the city and make a list until there are enough things to make it wise to spend the gas to go to town. Never not have spares because it is more expensive to make a trip to town if you run low on something than to stay stocked up. Sorry this suggestion may be good for people who can just walk to the stores but even they had a hard time finding toilet paper at time with Covid restrictions just to name one! If we have too much of something we use it and don’t by more until we get low on stock. Being able to find something is still touch and go even now so you have to keep a spare and buy a new one as so as you start using your spare. It has been so had to find even normal things at times that you better have more than just the 1 spare because you might run out long before the store got any again!

When it comes to duplicates- organize and combine them before tossing them- especially non perishable items. Use them up before tossing them just because you have an extra.
Also, remember that buying in bulk is not always cheaper.
While decluttering and getting rid of things that are no longer useful is such a trend now- please don’t discard things just to discard things.
Purchase and keep only things your family would be glad to own after you and keep you home so that 50 years of stuff doesn’t have to be tossed at one time.

I giggled at the laundry room sign "It's tough living life in the fast lane when you're married to a speed bump." Just to be a contrarian, consider that, instead of a negative comment about her husband, perhaps she put the sign up as an encouraging reminder to HERSELF not to be the speed bump. In our family we call it "the Eeyore mentality." 😁

So many good tips. I did the junk drawer suggestion one better. I eliminated it completely. I bought a clear tackle box type box with multiple compartments and used it to keep small tools in the bottom and hardware and related items in the small upper tiers. I have pushpins, picture hangers, felt feet, glue gun and glue. Scissors, a small wrench, pliers, several screw drivers and this box fits neatly on a shelf in my hall closet. It saves a trip to the cavernous disaster we call a garage. Living with a near hoarder of garage type stuff taught me to have my own personal tool kit so I can hang a picture or fix a broken tea cup without asking where the things I need are hidden. Living with another’s cluttered work space is trying. But finding way to adapt is healing.
