  • The integration of social media into everyday life has increased dramatically in recent years. Most view it as a positive driving force for social change; however, the over-saturation of social-media driven information in society has become a negative influence with far reaching consequences on the way we interact and work. Ryan Thomas is a senior at Loudoun County High School. He intends to run track in college while pursuing an Ivy-League level education. Ryan is motivated by the impact that he believes he can have on society, and is always striving to be his best. After deleting social media, Ryan was able to see the world in a different light and immediately noticed a positive change in his life. He is an unshakable optimist, and believes that there is always opportunity for change, which he wants to help bring to people’s lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have taken long breaks, but when I go back to it, I feel progessively worse and concerned with it in the back of my mind all the time. I am finally taking the plunge and deleting it for good - as soon as my "self control" app lets me back on there. During my breaks, I feel much better, more peaceful. I do have a fear of missing out on potential video art gigs, but the truth is, I don't do that many and I will get more art made without it and go from there...

Wow. This is so true. I passed a day without social media and then I came back the other day saying ''you know, I am in control, I am gonna use it just 30 minutes'' (lol) and then BOOM, 3 hours straight. It is true I was talking with a friend and laughed a lot, but is also true that I came back to checking others' lives and my mood instantly changed for bad. I deactivated my Facebook and Twitter accounts but I'm really attached to Instagram.

Life without social media is peaceful. When you stop eyeing everything on what your friends do, what they are upto, what's going on in some random celebrity's life, it just wastes our time and we grow restless with time.
Reserving ourselves upto us is worthy. It is peaceful.

Hannah I deleted all socials (excluding WhatsApp which I hardly use) The best thing for me was my self esteem is coming back, my depression has dropped about 80%, I am less anxious and I have more time to read, watch or do something. I will say the only saddest part is realising that you have hardly any friends or family well that’s my case but it may not be for you. Once you leave and FOMO lasts a couple weeks. I’d say give yourself 30 days of no social media and see if you are happy at 30 days. Keep a messaging app if that helps you :)

When i was a kid, we had to ask permission to make a 30-second phone call on our home phone, which was not wireless, so you had to talk to your friend with your parents right there.
And, if somebody rang up, and you didn't want to talk to them for whatever reason - busy, tired, sick, whatever - you could just tell your mother or whoever picked up the call, "Tell her I'll see her at school tomorrow". And it was fine!

I see it as Aldous Huxley's version of hypnotic control over the masses, as well. Recently, after taking a break and going back on, I had the revelation that I am just part of an ever-passing, very temporary, and massive stream of mostly time-wasting information passing by, and I don't want to be part of that.

Come on we know that people's real purpose in using social media is not like they want to share their life with their friends and socializing. They real purpose is make others jealous and get attention like "Heey look I'm having so much fun I'm very happy look how cool is my new car " (sitting at home cries and eat mcdonalds) "

I don't follow those fake celebrities. Or my friends who try too hard to show how perfect their life is but in reality it is not. I also stopped anything on my Instagram since a whole month.

Every time I've deleted facebook I've felt such a sense of relief, the constant content of negativity and fighting really has an effect on your mind. After I deleted facebook I felt a day of separation anxiety and then I didn't miss it at all, I went outside and got busy doing other things, going to museums, joining meet up groups, hanging out at the dog park, I actually realized the entire time I was offline I was thinking about being online.. right there is a sign theres a problem. Get outside and look at nature, get back to basics. It will change your life.

But, I come from a poverty line family background and I want my money to work for me when I start making it. I wanna invest. Any good books that you recommend? Thank you.

Deleted Snapchat and Instagram 3 days ago and I’m honestly upset it took me until now to do so. Thinking about all of those moments I stared at my screen instead of where I was. Thinking about taking pictures of my perfectly assembled meal, OOTD, and “having fun” when I truly wasn’t. Social media is a controlling monster that has a way of controlling us mentally, behaviorally, and physically yet we don’t realize this until helpful videos like this or an epiphany hits us.

Not sure if social media can be the cause of depression but more like a trigger and something that maybe doesn't help if you are already feeling a bit low. I've never had issues with it at all, I loved insta because I'm a photographer and I uploaded my work and could see others but in may I had a relapse on depression and social media did made it worse, I started having really bad anxiety because I'd compare my low with people's edited lives. I deleted it and now I have recovered, I don't even miss it, I feel so at peace and can focus better on my tasks, started studying anatomy, doing curses, working better and starting new projects🖤🥰

That's so true! But ironically for me, the lockdown has shown me more on how toxic being online a lot of the time can be. And how I could use my time in a more valuable way instead of social media. For me the fact that basically all social interaction has been forced to online has made me feel overwhelmed and miss the feeling of interacting in person. And I'm hoping more people feel the same after Covid ends because it's insane how many people I see who are glued to their phones anytime I go outside. It's really taken over our lives.

I'm on social media break now. And what Ryan said in his video is a hundred percent true. I've experienced it myself that being constantly on social media means leaving yourself to turn into a judgemental individual and lead you to a feel of inadequate. Today marks the beginning of my journey to free myself from constant comparison and lack of self awareness, a numbness, a box that has taken over every aspect of my life, has stopped and prolonged me from reaching my goals, has made me sad, anxious, mad at myself. I no longer want to rely on social media to “give me something to do” when I have “nothing to do” because I do have things to do, I need to live my life. Maybe one day I’ll be able to manage both but for now I’m ready for a total reset. Good luck to all you can do this!
