    What he said - break down your goals into small managable tasks.
    What he didnt say - dont have too many goals at the same time.
    Notice how he achieved most of his goals by focusing on one goal at a time.

      He didn't say a lot of things. In fact it's like he hasn't analysed what he's done and tried to distil why it works down. He probably doesn't even know that he doesn't know why he got to where he got. He thinks he's passed on a philosophy that works but he's barely communicated anything about the how, at all. Mostly he just gave a random list of achievements. Such an annoying talk

      Stephen used time blocks. He focused on one goal for a specific amount of time, and then after the time he set was over, he would immediately stop what he was working on and move on to work on a different goal.
      You can never have too many goals [at least that's what I believe]

    *Summary: Marginal improvement is the key to success*
    Speaker says that what stands between us and our most ambitious dream is not magical skill or talent but more with how we approach problems and make decisions to solve them.
    Marginal improvements are the key to be better. Stop becoming a spectator and become an active participant of your actions and decisions.
    Take big assignments and break them into smaller tasks. Speaker says in college he used to not think of completing 5 chapters but reading 3-4 paras at a time for 5-10 min then do something else for couple minutes and then come back. He was a straight-A student all through college- dean's list.
    You have to break big goals into smaller achievable goals.
    The talk includes many personal stories about the speaker's life which I recommend you to watch for yourself. I also found the oratory skills of the speaker to be very good. A must watch video.

    The Japanese Call it Kaizen, which is to do something that is in congruent with your goals, even if it is just for a minute. This technique changed my life in just a few months. Goals that I failed to hit for years, habits that I failed to break since childhood, I achieved in a span of just 8 months

    • @ojsympson35
      @ojsympson35 6 лет назад +59

      @Ayandolos if you set a goal, like let say to loose weight, it will be difficult to be consistent in effort especially when you are not used to excercising. So the way Kaizen works is that you put in effort everyday by being consistent and breaking down the task into something more accommodating to the mind. If you are supposed to run for 1 hr, and you fill tired, or not in the mood, just decide to run for 5 minutes instead. If you get up and run for 5 minutes, you will have manipulated your mind to take the first step, as a result, you might be able to run for maybe 20 to 30 minutes. It eliminates Procastination and laziness. The key is to be consistent no matter what, even in days that you don't feel like doing the difficult task.

    • @ojsympson35
      @ojsympson35 6 лет назад +21

      @Ayandolos the secret is consistency, that is more important than putting so much effort in a task but failing to be consistent. Kaizen will get you to be consistent, then you will be able to increase effort and output in time

    • @ojsympson35
      @ojsympson35 6 лет назад +26

      @Ayandolos exactly, when you don't feel like doing, just set a goal to do just 1 push up. When you are on the floor and doing just one, you will reignite your momentum and push to even 5 or 7, and that's how you will remain consistent

Once we reach the small successes we want more and become more productive. Some people become workaholics. Absolutely no magic pills just small adjustments. Just like another reader here I had a BIG million dollar question... how to work on something for 5 minutes, then take a break, NOT get distracted, and return to the task?? I purchased his book that came out a few days ago called AlphaBrain and he explains several concepts in detail. Doing the task is just a small part of the big picture and supposed to be the easiest. He puts in a lot of time before the task in planning and making decisions about what he is going to do and why? That's the toughest part that 95% people just don't do because it's hard to think through that stuff. They start at a task, get distracted and don't complete it. Steve breaks his goal down into tiny little pieces, plans out when, how and why he's going to do it, even planning for when he won't feel like doing it, and how to address that state in advance. Overall, he advises on how to improve the process of making the minute to minute decisions we make in a day and not fall into same old traps. Most of us don't approach problems that way and that's why we fail. I'm still trying to re-read, absorb and implement the advice in his book. I see how it can be life changing.

      its worked for him...to not to get distracted and return to work
      if its not working for us...there is something that worked for us...we have to found that out by observing ourselves
      in my case...i put a timeslot...i.e.,at 6 am every morning i should do this..like that

      Yeah, the key takeaway is to plan before you put in the work. Like a programmer would first get a feel of how the program should be build, work through some pseudocode with some examples etc.

      I was full of energy and secretly believing that I can do more, achieve more, deserve better. I was in a low paid, a bottom-of-the-ladder job, which is fine but not what I wanted to do. I was working hard but not seeing the positive outcome coming my way. Stephen changed that. He told me that I can and I will get where I want but also gave me the recipe. He told me to change the ladder and gave me the confidence and method to achieve more. He changed me.
      I'm now running my own business, doing exactly what I want, earning more than ever and not feeling I have a job.
      More importantly, I'm happy and know how to do more. It's a different question that I still need his inspiration from time to time. But since I've known him, I don't have the excuses anymore.

    This is a great Ted Talk.
    At 32, I started taking lessons for Tennis and piano. I’m not thinking of the end goal, and just looking to improve marginally at every session and daily practice. With piano, I spend only 15-25 mins a day to practice. Within a month, I completed the primer level book, and it got me excited to learn even more. I am also keeping a track by recording myself from time to time.
    Amazing how daily habits and marginal improvements can make a big difference

    I watched MANY TED talks and felt, yeah thats a good speech, BUT after watching this talk a couple of times (which I just felt compelled to), I literally got up and accomplished nagging projects in a few weeks that I couldn't do in years. Usually I try to finish a task and lose steam especially with an ADHD brain. Now I can put an excited effort for a brief time and keep coming back again an again without feeling like a failure for quitting. I feel competent not weakened because I don't get bored, I can't wait to come back to work. When spending a stretch of time doing something I need to do, distractions are a relief cuz I already lost focus, but now I don't spend enough time to get bored, I get excited to switch back and refocus with intent. It goes against common knowledge that our brain can't focus on more than one thing and it takes time to get your back. BUT if you approach something with complete attention as much as you can give it before you dread it, you will come back cuz you crave not dread to complete it. This is a very different message or advice Ive received for years. I will start with basic goals that need to be accomplished and now seem "almost fun" and hope to go from tasks to dreams. wish me luck

    on her full book. Her instructor is 84 years old. No one in her class is younger than 75 years old. I had to take the first stories to her book group for publishing myself. She did consent to go with me until she realized that no matter how afraid she was of success, I was submitting her short stories for publishing.
    She took the poems herself. Her name is in the index of the second book, with all her poems listed. Never would have happened if she had not taken the first
    step by joining the local writing group. One day she will get her romance novel published. And then it will be a series, and then one of them will be made into a movie, and then she will buy her dream home at 89. It is never to late to dream.!

For eg, Let's say You are feeling lazy and don't feel like studying, but you know you have to study as it will open up more opportunities for you. So if you take that small decision of ignoring your laziness and doing what is needed , you will succeed. Eventually when we become successful in taking small everyday decisions, we develop our personality in such a way that if tomorrow some big tasks come in front of us, we won't hesitate to take action and complete it.

The point is to let the built up stress go from working and relax for a bit, then recover and return, it works very well ngl

    I agree with the overall message. Really great talk. There's really only one way to really achieve your list of goals - create and build a system that supports the goal. Don't think about the end point, but just follow the system.
    For example: Don't think about losing the 30lbs. Focus on building the infrastructure to support the healthy lifestyle that puts you at a lower rate. Eat a salad 3x a week, do jumping jacks for 20 minutes straight, drink 4 glasses of water a day. That's it. Then slowly adjust as you it become easier and your habits grow.

    This is very powerful. Marginal improvement. Similar concept to 1%. Get 1% better at the thing you're doing. Then do it again and again and again. Very powerful. I really appreciate his idea of breaking things down into the smallest bites possible. Sounds similar to what BJ Fogg talks about. Awesome. Just awesome.

      I want to raise and mange £1 billion from wealthy clients but how to break that down? The idea is in my mind for years but I stuck in a rut on that marginal improvement.

      Dawood: why $1 billion? I think this speaker's message would be:
      Start lower. One client at a time.

      Yeah, people always have this obsession with huge goals. It doesn't occur to most that this is actually the best way to freeze your brain's creativity by activating the fear/anxiety in the amigdala.

    I am inspired. Been struggling with depression and emotional instability, finally getting out of that space and realising my life is devoid of direction and meaning and purpose and the weight of all the personal issues and social issues and now career and life direction or lack thereof is the mountain weighing me down. Bounced in and out of depression for a long time. Finally last week did what the talk is all about, just went screw it and went out every night. Made plans to go out and did it, met few people talked was social. didnt do anything this weekend but hey, steps. So just starting, having self policing and understanding to put it down and move forward. Be proactive is very hard. But its doable.

    I have seen how replacing music with podcasts while driving have accelerated my learning by 2 hrs everyday. It really works

      Well, don't take everything at face value. For one thing, listening to music is a great way to distress yourself because it releases dopamine thus improving your mental health. Second, while podcasts are great and all, when you're doing an activity like driving, it takes attention away from the driving which would increase your risk of getting into an accident.

      And DOABLE.
      It doesn't go into abstract ideas like you have to be working hard constantly, consistently. The moment I hear such phrases I am discouraged.
      Like him, i cannot focus for very long. And knowing that I can take one step at a time is a huge relief. It's all about increasing the probability of achieving success by a marginal change.

    Just when I was about to give up my dreams. Now I am so fired up to start again. Tiny little decisions that must be made along the way, your approach towards your goal. Marginal improvement/adjustments that will make a huge impact in reaching your goals. From big goals breaking it down to manageable goals. Every little step you make and every little action you take matters. Love this video. Thank you. 💓

Really it is exactly what he said, a stitch at a time.
