Social media does a great job at making us feel like if we aren't constantly engaging there, then we're missing out. This talk does a great job of giving us the perspective that it's quite the opposite. Choosing where we give our time takes self-control and practice. Social media destroys that ability.
What I've realized after being away from social media apps (outside of watching RUclips videos) is that I don't even feel like I'm missing out. Most of the folks I actually care about I talk to on the phone or text, and it's a lot more meaningful/personal communication.
This is fantastic. The part where he explained what books and letters do compared to what TikTok and Instagram do was deep. I should watch this every morning.
A correlation I thought of while hearing that part is how meaningful well written letters can be. You'll often see situations where elderly people have a shoebox of letters they've received decades ago from family, love interests, and friends. I haven't seen a situation where somebody has a box of mementos with printed out Tweets.

I think its the other way around… games back then were made on the thought of “how can we make this as fun as possible?” Now its “how can we charge as much as possible on this game?” Addiction/time spent gaming is just a result of some of this ideology
The early 2000’s were the perfect middle ground. 80/90s games had soooooo much Grind built in but they did force us to build communities around the puzzles and issues we couldn’t solve.
@@AstrotamtvI literally asked other gamers if they spent money on passes, currency, etc. Almost all of them that could, did. I said I didn't because I liked the challenge. If you have to pay for everything its not much of a game.

"figure out what it means for you to get a good deal out of social media platforms", i like this... being intentional with the value these platforms can bring if used correctly.
This talk has at least 10 so powerful and mind-bending statements delivered by Dino that I literally had to pause the video to let "that" sink in so that the enxt time I rush to "avoid FOMO", I don't forget to miss on "living". We definitely need more discourse on this topic before it gets too late. ❤
I am leaving my comment here during travelling and I promise I will discord all the social media distraction and change my life ...if someone like my comments I get the notification about what I promised to me 😊
This made me realize my actual life is very short. I can't get lazy and push off what I should do today because today will never EVER come back. 90 is too optimistic. I've seen some people die at 50 or even younger. Even if you live to 90, you have to start accounting for surgery and recovery times, funerals, mortgage, raising children, your deteriorating health, alzheimer etc.
i’ve come to the conclusion that for most people the only thing it’s going to be able to take is to get rid of their smart phone. It’s an extremely hard habit to break and when it’s there it’s like having a pack of cigarettes there in front of you when you try to quit smoking.
Everything he said was just common sense yet I found it to be enormously informative. This just tells me how much of my time I was wasting on social media for nothing.
I have been watching this kind of videos once in a while and get highly motivated ,but I would repeat scrolling the next day, so from today onwards I am taking oath that I would not waste a lot of time in insta and stay away from other social platforms ,wish me luck😭 I would give the updates in January of next year!!
Thank you man!!! The most incredible and truthful speech I’ve heard after ages. I admire your bravery for sending this dark message to the world. The world needs to hear it. At least me! Thanks again! 🎉
I agree ❤ ... However I believe his message represents light and this world represents what is dark. And it's getting darker. Thank God for this message ❤
I never liked social media, but this talk misses a point: my focus time is valued at 20 dollars per hour, but my relax time should never be valued in dollars, but in happiness achieved. I plan spending most of that relax time playing board games, computer games, sports, watching TV series, spending time with friends and family... Probably 50% or more of that will be "screen time", because the computer games part of it will take a big chunk of that, but I think that's totally fine, and I'm not doing anything I will regret. I think the problem is that people are doing this out of being distracted, instead of choosing it consciously, and that's problematic, but saying that you should value each hour of your free time 20 dollars is the best way to feel like a failure and burnout, or just waste your life chasing the hassle instead of building your future happiness.
Thank you. I thought I was the only one thinking this. By this logic, anything that I do is a waste of time if it’s not “pursuing a future goal”. I had an anxiety attack after seeing this, especially considering that one of my hobbies is gaming once in awhile.
I'm glad for once my comment actually helped someone instead of triggering people like it always happens on youtube 😊 Good luck with your life: don't let others decide what you do with your time!
Well said. It's good to play a game or watch a reel once in a while, if you have a bad day, or if you want to relax. I think that's the point he makes though. He says that you need to make use of social media *moderately*.
Screen time doesn't bring happiness. Some momentary pleasure yes, but when it's over, we usually are frustrated with ourselves at how much time we spent, more than we intended...and yet, the dishes still need to be done.
@@rebeccajacklin3976 when I stop playing games I don't feel frustrated with how much time I spent doing that. I feel recharged and ready to get things done. When something upsetting happens, I normally think about it for some time to see if I can find some solutions or learn something from it, and then use games to get distracted and not overthink. Maybe if instead of demonizing screen time we would just accept it, people wouldn't become so addicted to it, because it would lose the charm of a forbidden thing to turn to when feeling bad. It still takes discipline and we are bound to make mistakes some time, but most of the people around me who see games as a way to relax are much happier than those who see unproductive activities as a time waster, and end up getting stressed and getting less done instead of more.
Let me just say that even if I quit social media, most of the people I am with are glued to their phones instead of being present in the moment. So there I am, either staring at my plate on a table or groups of people passing by. This is just inevitable. Whenever I say something, it does not come across at times because their attention is elsewhere. 😢 I long for an era I have never even been in. Life was simpler with beepers haha. When I was a kid, my mom had a beeper and I would just tell her if I was going out with friends in the neighborhood so she would not have to worry about me. That was life. ❤
We are living in the age of distraction and learning how to control your attention and choose what you focus on is an epic struggle that requires a high level of mental discipline. But the alternative is to let the machines win and lose our chance at an authentic, meaningful life.
00:00 We have limited time in our lives to do everything we want. 01:34 How you spend your time determines the quality of your life. 03:07 Excessive screen time has cognitive consequences and affects mental health negatively. 04:34 Social media platforms influence our mental health, relationships, and ability to pursue important things. 06:01 Social media encourages shallow communication and undermines deep understanding. 07:24 Social media platforms profit by monetizing users and influencing their behavior through targeted ads. 08:50 Social media platforms profit from your time 10:15 Most of us are overpaying for social media.
The stories that I could've write that i did not because my head always says that "Let's go find some motivation while scrolling through social medias" then just when I realized that I should be writing, I already wasted hours and and that made me feel unmotivated. It's a cycle really.

I spend a lot of time on screens. But that's also where I learn the most things. I personally don't think screen time is a bad thing. The internet is like a unlimited library. You could learn anything you want for very little money of free on the internet. It's a great tool if used correctly that is.

A correlation I thought of while hearing that part is how meaningful well written letters can be. You'll often see situations where elderly people have a shoebox of letters they've received decades ago from family, love interests, and friends. I haven't seen a situation where somebody has a box of mementos with printed out Tweets.
@@Ryan-ke5uq absolutely. I'm 29, so I've basically never written letters. I have an aunt who send hand written letters in the mail to me, and it is so nice honestly.
This has to be one of the most important speeches of our time.
“The body, mind and character that you will have in the future are being actively shaped by how you choose to use your time today.” hits to the core
"When something is free, you are the product."
10 minutes being on the screen for this Video saves me from countless hours. Thank you so much. And I will spread the news. Every minute worth it.
Something I appreciate about Ted talks is that they never have a click baity thumbnail. Sure the title may work toward that effect, but I never walk away from a video unsatisfied.
The amounts of time consumed on these platforms makes this talk one of the most important ones to hear and adjust our behaviour to. Thank you.
The irony of giving this talk and still being active in social media and showing off your life
I’ve been social media free for about a month and it’s completely changed my life. I started getting up at 5am and going to bed at 9 when before I was barely asleep by 2am
What do you do to spend the time without social media?
I quit social media 3 years ago. Best decision ever. I live my life for myself now, if you’re reading this and thinking about doing it - do it! Your life will improve. Because you’re just a product for these companies to be sold as data to other companies.
Is RUclips social media?
No it’s not
it is! you just confirmed it with your comment@@francoishenrileblanc
hey, are you american? i was wondering if you know a lot about facebook unfairly influencing the 2016 u.s elections. and do you think it's a thing everyone knows about and have thought about? I'm just working on a future video about social media dangers. thanks for your message by the way.
I did the same thing a year ago. Life feels less heavy.
"Don't let yourself get to the age of 90 only to look back on your life and realize that while you were trying to avoid FOMO, you actually missed out on living."
great TED talk, Dino

8:53 Social media is free because you pay for it with your time.
When something is free, you are the product.
Truly, this is the most impactful RUclips video I’ve ever seen. I feel absolutely gut-wrenched and sick to my stomach but I’m so glad I’ve seen this at 22 years old because I still have a lot of time ahead of me and I can change now. I’ve always known social media isn’t good for me but he has somehow managed to get across to me the actual magnitude of this issue and I’m terrified for life! I have just deleted all of my social media profiles and apps and will just use messaging from now on and I will NEVER be tempted to redownload them ever again. Thank you for saving my life, sir.
"That free time is your most valuable resource. Do not give it away for free." Easily one of the best closing lines 💖
Updated with everything rather than deeply informed about anything - I love that. We are so focused on gather information we will eventually forget or to unimportant rather than truly get invested in a few topics
Am 25 and i hust started getting soaked into social media by 20. It got worst from 24.
This really has helped me. Now, I see the many loopholes and am really going to have to sort out the damage
Most phones have an option to set a time limit on apps, just changed my IG time from one hour a day to 10 minutes. Never installed TikTok, never will. After watching this I intend to read more books.
I request TEDx to open these speeches to general public as well because we're compelled to see these beautiful speeches on our screen.
I’ve been reading a book called “Steps To Christ” and journaling out my thoughts instead of a morning scroll through social media. Things are getting better and my appetite for reading is growing again!
Please give it a try, even if you can only read a few paragraphs or one chapter a day.
Love this idea - ty!
wow, are you Christian?
I honestly think everyone needs to see this video, ESPECIALLY younger people
Damn he is such a charismatic speaker. The confidence, the pauses and everything. They give weight to his speech a lot.
“Social media is free, because you pay for it with your time” really struck a nerve in me. There's no going back from here for me. Thankyou Dino Ambrosi.
I think everyone needs to see this video daily in the morning to get back our lives on track
Was thinking long back to limit useless social media scrolling hours to 1 hour a day max and after this eye opening talk(for the facts that I already knew) I'm sure I'll start to live in the real world once again!!!
Should be played across every high school in the world..
Thank you for this amazing and eye opening ted talk. I deleted tik tok about 10 months ago and I was shocked by how much time i actually had this whole time. I started doing things that i really had passion for and my life has never been better. Also majority of people these days don't seem to be able to make meaningful and deep conversations and that's upsetting. My friend picks on me because I don't have tik tok, but I'm positive that I'm making the right decision every day by choosing to not waste my precious time on social media.
This should really go viral
Brilliant talk. The gaming industry has picked up on this as well. They no longer want your money, they want as much of your time as possible.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say they absolutely want your money.
@@AstrotamtvI literally asked other gamers if they spent money on passes, currency, etc. Almost all of them that could, did. I said I didn't because I liked the challenge. If you have to pay for everything its not much of a game.
Life is too short to regret it. I think our current generational issue is getting back the time social media companies take from us so we can live fuller, longer lives.
This is one of the most stunning visualizations I have seen to explain the problem we are dealing with. Thank you, Dino, for this work.
You become Responsible towards your thing, nothing can dominate or take over you.... The World is changing and having control on oneself and taking care of your mental health should be primary objective to utilise your time productively❤ kudos to those who have self Control
I agree with him on quitting social media but he doesn't need to pressurize on utilizing the free time. We can as well enjoy our time spent our work, sleep, hygiene. They are productive and contribute to a fulfilled life.
As a writer some of my most meaningful time has been spent writing, which would count as work.
This talk is so underrated more people need to see this.
Thank you Dino!
Social media platforms make us chronically distracted - so real!
It's not about what you do, it's about who you do it with.
Deleted all my social media applications. l can fully focused on what matters the most. l defeated depression and the feeling of thinking " l am behind" . l am in my lane focusing on my studies, writing poetry, scripts etc love and Light to everyone reading this. I LOVE YOU ❤️
"while you were trying to avoid FOMO, you actually missed out on living" hit me hard 🔥🔥
Thank you for this. As a business teacher I showed this video to my students and the discussions there after were so powerful! We learned a lot and now have some solutions moving forward!
Bro sometimes my screen time does into the double digits. that’s a huge percentage of my life.
This video needs to be seen by EVERYONE.
Every line spoken in this talk had a lot of depth. One of the best TEDx talks I've seen so far!
i think this was one of the most serious talks given in ted so far. man the silence!!
The pacing and delivery of this talk were exceptional, as were the accompanying data visualisations that really hit home just how pernicious a force the internet is on our lives. Short, sharp, and to the point. Nailed it. 👌
I am 25 and I feel like I wasted more than 3 years, but "optimistically" it is not too late!
If social media wasn't free, would you spend money on it? So why are you spending time on it? You can always make more money. Time is something you can never get back.
Maybe real life sucks and we do prefer our screen and scrolling
Sooo true!!
@@HighTechFan_Geek yeah If only reall life wasn't as disappointing as it is. Then I wouldn't search for an escapism.

i really wish social media apps were locked behind a paywall
Do what you like to do. If your dreams are big enough, you will be chasing.
"figure out what it means for you to get a good deal out of social media platforms",
i like this... being intentional with the value these platforms can bring if used correctly.
IF SOMETHING IS FREE THEN YOU'RE THE PRODUCT.
This talk has at least 10 so powerful and mind-bending statements delivered by Dino that I literally had to pause the video to let "that" sink in so that the enxt time I rush to "avoid FOMO", I don't forget to miss on "living".
We definitely need more discourse on this topic before it gets too late.
❤
I am leaving my comment here during travelling and I promise I will discord all the social media distraction and change my life ...if someone like my comments I get the notification about what I promised to me 😊
" YOU ARE THE PRODUCT " damn.....so powerful
My favourite TED talk for now 👏🏻
One of the best TedTalks I've ever watched. Really love how he shares this subject from an insightful perspective. Made me think a lot. THANKS A LOT!
Everything he said was just common sense yet I found it to be enormously informative. This just tells me how much of my time I was wasting on social media for nothing.
I have been watching this kind of videos once in a while and get highly motivated ,but I would repeat scrolling the next day, so from today onwards I am taking oath that I would not waste a lot of time in insta and stay away from other social platforms ,wish me luck😭
I would give the updates in January of next year!!
This is the most needed tedxtalks for this social media addicted generation
I'm glad for once my comment actually helped someone instead of triggering people like it always happens on youtube 😊
Good luck with your life: don't let others decide what you do with your time!
My Macroeconomics professor always says that, "If anything is free, YOU are the price."

I don't understand why this Ted talk is underated... I mean its a masterpiece!!!!!
The stories that I could've write that i did not because my head always says that "Let's go find some motivation while scrolling through social medias" then just when I realized that I should be writing, I already wasted hours and and that made me feel unmotivated. It's a cycle really.
These are the one of the best lessons I have learnt in my social media journey 😮...

"While you were trying to avoid FOMO, you were missing out on living." Amazing sentiment.
I spend a lot of time on screens. But that's also where I learn the most things. I personally don't think screen time is a bad thing. The internet is like a unlimited library. You could learn anything you want for very little money of free on the internet. It's a great tool if used correctly that is.
Absolutely 💯
When I was a kid I watched tv all day , read played a bit. But still it’s all a time waster. Phones just accelerate it now bit same thing.
Agreed, agreed
He literally said it’s a tool that can be used. The issue with constantly learning things online is when are we putting the knowledge to use if all we are doing is learning..

The calculation is mind blowing. Glad I found this video
Finally a guy giving sensible arguments against and for social media. It's good to learn that I'm using Social Media in the way that allows me to have more family time, working time (I love researching and learning and improving on my equity analysis) and thats all!
Really loved watching the video.
