My biggest tip is to keep a daily, brief journal, page a day, on what you did at work that day. Often you are acquiring new skills, or taking in new roles, that you get so used to not thinking about, you forget to put these in your resume. The journal is also really, really important to note any interactions that seem either really positive (again, reminding yourself you did good work) but also jot down in a few words any events or interactions that made you ho, “Hmm…”. Not gossip, just your own direct experience/observation.
Ugh, Im' so sorry to hear that, that blows! Mine was continued through COBRA, but it was not done very well and the company made updates to their insurances without letting the laid off folks know, so I essentially ended up losing dental & vision anyway.
you seem a few years out of college, let me share my experience. it is easy to tie your identity to your job so it hurts being laid off. with time the hurt heals and you will be in a better place in the future. keep skilling up and networking.
Thank you so much for this. This is literally my exact same situation. I should’ve applied for jobs months ago when they announced the company wasn’t doing well. Watching this video gave me a lot of guidance, as this is my first time experiencing getting laid off
Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing parts of your testimony. I’m in the soul searching (phase? Doesn’t seem right to call it a phase. Feels like every day 😅) and actively trying to lean into the unknown. Helpful video!
So glad to hear this helped you, Annie❤ I'm permanently in a soul searching phase so I know exactly what you mean - leaning into the unknown is probably going to be my lifelong thing. 💫
Although it may seem like it, getting laid off is not the end of world. Treat your job search as your job. Take whatever training you can get or need to keep your skills up to date. However, if you are manager or owner, don't inform your employees they have been laid off over voicemail. That's the coward's way out and it can impact you when you are trying to retain or hire new employees since they can do the same background check that you perform on them. It would be better to tell the person ahead of time and in person. If that's not possible then at least try to tell them directly over the phone. I have been laid off a few times over my career, but at least none of my managers did it over email or voicemail.
Before you go off in vacation or buy that expensive personal symbol of success you always secretly craved (whether it’s by Prada or Mercedes) make sure you have savings equivalent to at least six months take-home pay. At least! As well as being a safety net, it gives you a feeling of freedom that you need not put up with an awful workplace or colleagues, or pay lower than you feel your work is worth.
Take it from a 60 year old: if you are an employee, you are only an employee. You are ALWAYS dispensible. And often times, interchangeable. It has nothing to do with you as an individual, however good your work was. Once upon a time, companies only sacked groups of when the company was in trouble. Now, it is often because someone new to management has decided to look as if they are making changes. Maybe a startup knows what “roles” - which people or departments - to cut. With corporations, usually nobody in management has a clue what anyone actually does. The euphemisms like “sunset” and “laid off” only make it worse. Do not ever invest your sense of self, or self worth, in a company
Thank you for the thoughtful comments & advice! Hoping others reading this can take away especially the last thing you said here which is separating our self worth from any outcomes, especially outcomes related to careers that are sometimes out of our control.
I worry about people in the Tech field… I think AI is going to just gobble up all those jobs… It doesn’t ask for time off doesn’t ever sleep and it doesn’t need a paycheck
Omg when I saw the title of the video I read it as "I got laid from a startup & this is what I learned" I was like that sounds like interesting story, how did that happen? Smh🤦♀️😂

Do this. It is invaluable and helpful in the most surprising ways (both during the job and after you leave)
Thank you for this video Jenn. I have been out of work for a long time from tech. There are things here I can incorporate going forward.
6 months of health insurance..... I got 2 weeks when I was laid off
Ugh, Im' so sorry to hear that, that blows! Mine was continued through COBRA, but it was not done very well and the company made updates to their insurances without letting the laid off folks know, so I essentially ended up losing dental & vision anyway.

Dang, I read the top of the thumbnail and was like " WOAH" then read the rest and was like " ok..makes sense" lol
Omg. I got laid off right before my birthday too! But unfortunately there's no such thing as unemployment benefits where i live.
Thank you
I worry about people in the Tech field… I think AI is going to just gobble up all those jobs… It doesn’t ask for time off doesn’t ever sleep and it doesn’t need a paycheck
The way the thumbnail reads is "I got laid" and then after a bit your brain sees the rest
