    I worry about people in the Tech field… I think AI is going to just gobble up all those jobs… It doesn’t ask for time off doesn’t ever sleep and it doesn’t need a paycheck

    Although it may seem like it, getting laid off is not the end of world. Treat your job search as your job. Take whatever training you can get or need to keep your skills up to date. However, if you are manager or owner, don't inform your employees they have been laid off over voicemail. That's the coward's way out and it can impact you when you are trying to retain or hire new employees since they can do the same background check that you perform on them. It would be better to tell the person ahead of time and in person. If that's not possible then at least try to tell them directly over the phone. I have been laid off a few times over my career, but at least none of my managers did it over email or voicemail.

    would love to know how you would handle a situation where the company has multiple candidates past the final round, and you're not sure how far to push the compensation (in case they pass the offer to other candidates)

    • @seattlejenn
      @seattlejenn Год назад

      Great question - if they extended you an offer, there's a low chance the recruiter will simply extend an offer to another candidate immediately without consulting you after you push the comp and they say no. So I would say push as if you would if there were no other candidates, within limits (maybe just 2 rounds at most)

    Been looking into houses and saw your video! Great tips but had one concern. Regarding ARM, isn't it still risky enough where the cons outweigh the pros? Just recently, we saw how rates have basically tripled since the pandemic with the Fed still looking to raise rates to curb inflation (albeit a current pause due to bank current events). Even if my first house isn't most likely going to be my permanent house, what are the chances I would pay more if I did an ARM now over a fixed rate and the Fed kept on doing 50bps to tackle inflation (especially as Jerome Powell has made it clear that he prioritizes curbing inflation over the current economic state)?

    • @seattlejenn
      @seattlejenn Год назад

      These are good points! Since financial decisions are super personal, I can see how for some people the premium paid for a peace of mind is worth it. But looking back at my own personal experience where I initially got a 30 year mortgage for my first home, it turned out to have been a mistake as I refinanced a few times after to take advantage of higher rates. We'll see about my current house as we went with an ARM what the interest rates will be when the fixed period is over :O

I wish there is a community around my area with women like you willingly to share the career/life journey. I'm in the tech field, took a gap year, and started job hunting early this year. I'm interested in transition from a technical role ( I was doing TAM/SE) into program manager field. Would you mind to share and advise how to tap into program manager position? Before you go off in vacation or buy that expensive personal symbol of success you always secretly craved (whether it’s by Prada or Mercedes) make sure you have savings equivalent to at least six months take-home pay. At least! As well as being a safety net, it gives you a feeling of freedom that you need not put up with an awful workplace or colleagues, or pay lower than you feel your work is worth.

  • @eh1702
    @eh1702 Год назад

    My biggest tip is to keep a daily, brief journal, page a day, on what you did at work that day. Often you are acquiring new skills, or taking in new roles, that you get so used to not thinking about, you forget to put these in your resume. The journal is also really, really important to note any interactions that seem either really positive (again, reminding yourself you did good work) but also jot down in a few words any events or interactions that made you ho, “Hmm…”. Not gossip, just your own direct experience/observation.

    Take it from a 60 year old: if you are an employee, you are only an employee. You are ALWAYS dispensible. And often times, interchangeable. It has nothing to do with you as an individual, however good your work was. Once upon a time, companies only sacked groups of when the company was in trouble. Now, it is often because someone new to management has decided to look as if they are making changes. Maybe a startup knows what “roles” - which people or departments - to cut. With corporations, usually nobody in management has a clue what anyone actually does. The euphemisms like “sunset” and “laid off” only make it worse. Do not ever invest your sense of self, or self worth, in a company

      Thank you for the thoughtful comments & advice! Hoping others reading this can take away especially the last thing you said here which is separating our self worth from any outcomes, especially outcomes related to careers that are sometimes out of our control.

    Informative video! One thing I'd like to ask is if you could include more details such as job position and TC of the offers you've received (doesn't have to be exact numbers)... or would this be disclosed in part 2? It helps out knowing what the market conditions are like and what to expect. For example, I know many ex-FAANG who got laid off and had to settle for much lower TCs when they got offers elsewhere due to current market conditions. Knowing this really helps out people, like myself, on what to expect!
