Just got “furloughed” for 2 months from my tech startup. Tell your sis to be glad she doesn’t live in AZ! Max unemployment benefit here is $240/week vs. her $660/week. That cut makes for a rough transition with a stay at home mom and 3 kids coming from a salary of nearly six figures! 😅
Yeah but in AZ we pay little taxes, with more tax cuts coming. Those tax savings were supposed to be saved up for this reason. Compared to CA where everything is taxed. Plus in AZ the RE prices are much cheaper, meaning it's easier to pay for housing. Where as in CA, if you get laid off from your big tech job, a small tech job won't pay you enough to even cover the housing payment every month.
These are NOT Tech Workers. These are people working low skill/overhead jobs in tech companies. There's a clear difference. The certified engineers and coders were retained in most cases.
To prevent from panicking of layoff, I live a frugal life, paying off all debts (car, house, credits), having an emergency fund and investing in the stock market.
I remember when I was last laid off. Hurricane Sandy in 2012. 😆 First I went sailing in the Caribbean for six months, as I'd been living in my van for the recession. Then came home as my tenant was leaving, so rented rooms out and did gig work ever since 😄. It's wonderful not having a boss and part time work. Never go to restaurants, or paid concerts. Mint mobile for phone. Old car is paid for and low insurance. As prices go up I simply raise my gig work rate and housemate rent. I did do a spell of yacht work to pay down the mortgage and refi. So that helps $300/mo. What's going on now with the economy is nuts. Hoping for another recession so my daughter can afford a place.
I’m a software engineer in Brazil got laid off too, American investors stop coming hahah, but I got another job at my previous company as tech lead, the work is more and pay is less but at least I’m an associate, followed jake advice and now I “own” a piece of a business
Unemployment is taxed you must pay that and if you recieve a job offer and turn it down the unemployment stops She said also you must apply at 4 places a week They do not care is less money or farther to drive
This is such a helpful and relevant video! I’m sure so many people are benefitting from it! Did she or anyone else you know receive a severance package? I’d love to learn more and why it’s taxed so high.
It’s weird seeing one of these where the person’s financial situation seems pretty reasonable, like no $500/mo for candles or anything. I’m glad she went for unemployment though, when I got laid off I knew people that were like “oh I’m not gonna go through the hassle.” Like dude you have $0 coming in, get that money it’s yours! Funniest part for me was getting the notice from the unemployment office where they were like “you NEED to come in we MUST discuss how to search for jobs and fill out a resume” so I just showed up with my (multiple, industry specific) resumes and they’re all like “oh… uh… okay, enjoy your day.”
Im un construction management and got laid off in the beginning of December right before the holiday. Got another job in the states with roughly 50% pay increase.
I don't know how I got to your video with your sister...It was brave of her to put all her expenses online...I'm sure it helped many people...I was just wondering how it worked out for her...did she get the job she was looking for??
Ok, for all the people in the US, getting laid off while on maternity is not normal. Fight for employee rights, I am shocked that people will fight for the right to own a gun, but not for the right to not be treated like trash by your employer
I hope that Carly could find next job soon. I know it is tough, I have been laid off before in oil and gas industry during oil price crash downturn so I know how stressful it could be. In the process I learnt that everyone is replaceable, doesn't matter our performance was because that's how it works in corporate world run on capitalism. Thus we should never be dependent on our job as a single source of income. Best to diversify and create another source of passive income whether it is online business, shares, divident, renting out property, deposits interest, etc so you get peace of mind. Because there will always be fluctuation. In fact every 10 years we always have financial crisis so we need to be versatile at any time. Also see if your technical skill can be transferable to other sector that not so niche. Dont forget to be discipline with your expenditures. Anyway good luck on your next journey as I'm sure you will find something soon!! All the best!!
Always best to like frugally. I like to think of life like the seasons in nature. Its not always going to be sunny in your employment. You have to prepare for the winters that inevitably crop up.

wow I live in the San Francisco Bay Area... each day, I eat out, and for one person, the total bill is any where from $60 to $80... but it is for 2 meals... I order 2 and eat half of each, and then take home the rest... so my monthly bill for food can be $70 average x 30 = $2100 per month
I feel for your sister. I was laid off during the pandemic working as a Talent Sourcer for a top healthcare firm and felt my world was collapsing in 2020 after losing my well-paid recruitment and sourcing position. After re-grouping and making several mistakes (accepting low paying recruitment jobs out of desperation). I was fortunate enough to get back to my firm. Shortly thereafter less than year or so left, now work for the top healthcare firm and feel more stable. I suggest looking for non tech companies try to avoid start-ups or companies who are not well capitalized. Instead look for non-for-profit firms in needed such as governmental entities such as public hospitals college or universities, mainly public colleges if private ensure they have are well funded with large endowments, if not try to get an employment contract. Just my two cents.
This, I work for a company where their core service isn't tech, but use tech to complement the core service. We only laid off 4% of our total workforce and most core engineering functions are not impacted, mostly just contractors and problematic employees.
I am sorry to hear about the lay offs, I have been told that there was a shortage in tech, is that still the case and if so. How could that be the case whilst there also mass lay offs in tech? I am not from the USA so I am not sure how that all works.
That's my question too. Where is her partner? First of, she just had a baby if she has a partner she would never stress out on looking for a job until feel confortable. I don't know her marrige dinamics but it's weird.
I got laid off from my job as well too which is a public business one so I'll have to wait until my boss gives me a call or a send me a text to rehire me back to my previous job. I can't move on to a next job not yet because I don't feel like moving to a better opportunity because my boss said him and the others would love to have me there.
It's tough, I'm in Louisiana and max Unemployment benefit is only $247 per week. This number hasn't changed since I worked in a claims call center for them in 2010. At some point I switched to working with veterans - if a veteran finishes his contract and has his DD214 (was honorably discharged) - and wants to get Unemployment while he is looking for a new civilian job - they don't have to use the State that they lived in (grew up in). They can actually call up ANY state and file unemployment. So they can pick the state (back in the day that meant walking into one, but seems most are remote call centers now) that pays the most weekly benefit which currently is Massachusetts at $823 per week, or $3,292mth. So for all veterans - don't pick your home state! ;)
It's because of the interest rate. Most of these companies were over leveraged and bloated during low interest rate, but now the FED has increased the interest rate to fight inflation by killing demand, if most people are unemployed they won't have money to buy things anymore, so inflation will come down, hence the layoff. Companies can't have cheap loans anymore.
As a Swede, I appreciate the Swedish system where we pay higher taxes and get benifits from the government. Parents gets 480 days paid leave for their newborn and your employer can not fire you because you're on maternity/paternity leave.
I got laid off and have a disability. That’s also why. My brother in law was on sick leave when laid off. This is a crazy time. Then, everything happens. Things break down more it seems. Or maybe more noticeable. The simple life is easier for me. I’d rather eat good meals at home and have a roof over my head. If I spent a lot of time eating out and shopping for clothing, I wouldn’t be able to survive, now. I dropped my magazine subscriptions, doing my hair and nails. You do need at least a 6 month to year’s money, in case you can’t find a job. Unemployment is hard to deal with. People are losing their shirts. I’m lucky, other than the multiple repair bills, I have a place to live. However, my next door neighbor is having trouble making her dues to live in the condo. But, I can’t worry about everyone else. I have multiple repairs bills , right now and have to worry about myself.
The employer paid 50% and the employee paid the other 50% from your biweekly paycheck for the unemployment insurance to the state. Each state is different in the weekly amount paid to the recipient.
Unfortunately it happens all the time even 20 years ago. The company does a "restructure" and change your job specs and proof your job is eliminated even on maternity or sick leave
2700 a month in unemployment!!! Here in TX it tops out at 2000 (500/ week). Also that's gross so watch for taxes owed later. Your sis is in a dual income household?
Theis expense breakdown is so relatable! Honestly eating out for $400 a month seems reasonable to me. Frankly even grocery shopping costs quite a bit too.. If only money would go further!
Listen, I was once hired and going through my two week training when HR swept through and the entire team of 12 off, and that was AFTER being laid off my main job! I will never put down unemployment! Unemployment helps you find your footing and bounce back quicker, faster. You shouldn't have to lose everything because your job dumped you unexpectedly when you done nothing wrong to lose the job! Give yourself some room to know that IT WASN'T YOU THAT CAUSED YOUR SUDDEN UNEMPLOYMENT! Some people are so brainwashed to think they're living off Uncle Sam even if it wasn't their fault! You use it if you have to then move on with life!.... Life is a series of ups and downs. If you're living an entire ups life you are indeed blessed. Even Jesus had his bad moments, Hello!
Congrats on the baby! I hope and pray for the best for yall! I wanted to say that I pay almost $400 to $500 in groceries in my state and month and my state is considered low income... there are 4 people living in my house, 2 adults (including myself l) and 2 children... how do I cut back? We can't even afford the good food. Thats all the cheap food... meat Is really where alot of that money goes but in order to have a decent meal you have to cook meats with your other meals.
My daughters income is the main in her family too. She left California 5 years ago and moved to Raleigh but still works from home for a California company. She had a few offers when she left and we together figured out what the best job and we picked the right one because she is still working there and makes good good money. Eating out, Starbucks, subscriptions all the crap will eat you alive. I am retired, make 75k a year, own two properties and still save 30k a year that gets mostly invested in Ecuadorian CD's at 8 percent interest. I spend more on food than your sister when I am in the USA and I am single but I cook everyday and have for many years and I only eat healthy. I tell young people all the time to live under your means and on a budget and save save save specially when things are good. In 25 years you will have so much money it will make your head spin. Even in the USA, you can get 5% on a CD and I think that will climb to 6% in the next few months.
I'm glad I was smart enough to buy houses when I was in the military instead of staying in base housing, now that I'm out I can at least count on disability and rental income if I get laid off. I also have a 1 year of living expenses emergency fund for this reason. Also, the costco pizza is good for the price, I get it all the time lol
When companies figure out the cost of an employee to the company, they include the unemployment insurance as a benefit. You pay it each month, so it’s not free money. Don’t forget you owe federal taxes on that $2,700 a month unemployment.
unemployment is 40% of past income? Does that mean if you are a software programmer, and is about $20,000 per month income, then you can still take $8,000 per month for unemployment? Does it last at most 6 months or 12 months? You know in California, for the past 30 years, it stayed at $1900 max per month, which is highly unfair, because the price the things went up 3x over 30 years but they don't increase that amount.
@@winterheat Yes there is a weekly max. Normally unemployment only lasts for 24 weeks or 6 months; but in the past congress has extended (back in the Great Recession they extended it to max 99 weeks.)

To prevent from panicking of layoff, I live a frugal life, paying off all debts (car, house, credits), having an emergency fund and investing in the stock market.
I remember when I was last laid off. Hurricane Sandy in 2012. 😆
First I went sailing in the Caribbean for six months, as I'd been living in my van for the recession.
You are awesome, thank you so much for your videos! 😊
Thank you for sharing. I was there before. Unemployment is an amazing benefit when used properly.
Unemployment doesn't pay out though
Unemployment is taxed you must pay that and if you recieve a job offer and turn it down the unemployment stops She said also you must apply at 4 places a week They do not care is less money or farther to drive
Thanks! I’d be curious to know more about how she cut her food budget so drastically
what a sweet sister
This is such a helpful and relevant video! I’m sure so many people are benefitting from it! Did she or anyone else you know receive a severance package? I’d love to learn more and why it’s taxed so high.
Your taxes was only $369 on $5700 gross paycheck?! ..And unemployment is $2700 per month?!...WOW...Utah for the WIN!!
Great video. Very informative
Thank you for sharing.
Can they do a 3 month or 6 month update? How are they covering med bills?
Ayo, wtf is her husband actually doing? I know I’m not the only one that picked up on all that, right?
Bro to be honest you were a bit harsh with the question
I was kind of thinking the same though
Stay at home Dad perhaps? What do you think?
They're doing pretty well for themselves though
Exactly I was thinking the same thing with the “we”
I can’t but help remember the Tech Kids of the day condemning laid-off factory workers “learn to code!” back when the Government and Wall Street were bankrolling the Chinese Communist Party replace American workers with virtual factory slave labor… as one of the few who actually code… I have to say that 2/3rds of Americans are saying now “learn to drive a truck” or work as a barista….
wow I live in the San Francisco Bay Area... each day, I eat out, and for one person, the total bill is any where from $60 to $80... but it is for 2 meals... I order 2 and eat half of each, and then take home the rest... so my monthly bill for food can be $70 average x 30 = $2100 per month
I am a Salesforce Consultant and was laid off this week
Im express " show love "to your sister she is smart and will get out of this ...right away what am i going to do now. no time for pity.
👏🏾👏🏾💯
Is there a severance package? How much is it?
I am sorry to hear about the lay offs, I have been told that there was a shortage in tech, is that still the case and if so. How could that be the case whilst there also mass lay offs in tech? I am not from the USA so I am not sure how that all works.
Thank you for sharing
Back to basics, when the fed cuts: whether interests or QE then accounting comes into do the layoffs/cost cutting to meet numbers.
🤣🤣🤣"Time for dinner " and we all hop in the car, love it! ❤️ God will provide please don't stress out!
That was funny 😆.
Any tips for freshers?? What should freshers do to get good job?
75k is pretty low for a tech job in CA. I pay 3k monthly. My wife got laid off while on maternity leave as well.
Sorry about that
We're y'all double income family?
They are in Utah, most likely Provo, 75k is enough to live on there.
is it correct to subtract all of the mortgage, utilities, and other expenses all from sister's take home pay? Her partner doesn't contribute anything?
The good news is she gets more time with her newborn 🎉❤
The employer paid 50% and the employee paid the other 50% from your biweekly paycheck for the unemployment insurance to the state. Each state is different in the weekly amount paid to the recipient.
Not many people do these kinds of videos. Wishing the best for Karly!
I am just happy to see such good looking people are re-producing!🤰🏼
I have never heard about a new Mom being laid off on maternity leave. That company has no class.
Unfortunately it happens all the time even 20 years ago. The company does a "restructure" and change your job specs and proof your job is eliminated even on maternity or sick leave
@@auntlalanyc wow, I guess I was lucky to work for a company that didn’t do that.
2700 a month in unemployment!!! Here in TX it tops out at 2000 (500/ week). Also that's gross so watch for taxes owed later. Your sis is in a dual income household?
I have the same question
In Ontario, Canada unemployment is paid by you. Unemployment insurance comes from your paycheque while you’re working. It’s basically your own money
Dude she got laid off and so brave to come on here but needed to pull her own chair!? We demand justice!
Even Jesus had his bad moments, Hello!
during pandemic my friend got laid off and made almost the same amount of money on unemployment in pennsylvania, like 85% or something
Your sister is a doll ! 😁😁
Wow! No property tax which state is that?
No severance???
I wish her the best…. She’s a fighter.
You know in California, for the past 30 years, it stayed at $1900 max per month, which is highly unfair, because the price the things went up 3x over 30 years but they don't increase that amount.
ok, I found out Utah has a weekly max of $580. California weekly max is $450. Colorado max is $618
@@winterheat Yes there is a weekly max. Normally unemployment only lasts for 24 weeks or 6 months; but in the past congress has extended (back in the Great Recession they extended it to max 99 weeks.)
Costco pizza is delicious and it’s only $10 for a whole pizza. My wife and I treat ourselves to it every couple weeks or so.
I love Costco pizza too!
Whenever I got laid off, I learned new skills and got a IT certification.
You're lucky you can afford that
Hope things going well for her. I wonder if her significant other should work as well.
