    Don’t be afraid to look out of your comfort zone. I went from being a poorly paid newspaper reporter, to a highly paid electronic technician (real sharp learning curve), to a security guard, and then to a dispatcher. I’m now happily retired.

    You were just a number on a spreadsheet. It is a business arrangement, no more, no less. Giving loyalty to a company is only as good as being employed long enough to get your next pay check.

    Remember that challenges are a part of life, and they can make us stronger and more resilient. It's okay to feel scared or overwhelmed, but don't let those feelings consume you. Take things one step at a time and focus on what you can control. Surround yourself with supportive people and reach out for help when you need it. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and keep pushing forward. You are capable of overcoming this obstacle and coming out even stronger on the other side.

    I feel like a lot of people wont have warning signs because these decision aren’t driven by performance and comes down like a blunt hammer. Someone told department head there needs to be x-amount saving, go make it happen. And the easiest way is wide spread lay off, probably people with less experience or people who are about to retire will be chopped. At least from what I seen, your manager and manager’s manager are usually kept in the dark until 1-2 days

    • @theveldmanway
      @theveldmanway  Год назад +2

    It really doesn't matter how good you are at your work, you are replaceable. Smaller companies tend to be a little kinder to employees, but office politics play a larger part as to who gets laid off. Large corporations don't care about employees and everyone is expendable. I'm glad I retired early. Good luck.

    Think about pivoting. Maybe work for temp agencies recruiting / onboarding temps for manufacturing customers? Recruit Welders, Mechanics, etc for Express Emoloyment or other agencies?
    It won't pay as much as Pay Pal, but there will be steady work.
    Or try recruiting for manufacturing / industrial Business Development/ Sales / Marketing roles?

    Hello. Tonight i have seen at least 1/2 dozen vids that have poped up abt people being laid off. So….to answer your question what should you post. I think, you can start a trend of……how to survive during the lay off. Frugal living etc. in my working life i have been through 5 recessions. Each time i learned something new. The biggest thing i learned is…..recessions will happen more, corporate America does not care about people first, they care about the profit margins. I also learned how to stay out of debt , i learned to cook economical meals, ate few meal out, stopped going to Star Bucks……budget better and save for the next recession. Since doing that , here i am in a recession once again. However, this time, i have no credit card debt, i have a emergency fund, and a car paid off. You will be employed again, but this time make the most of being employed………..get rid of your debt. Good luck to you and all that this recession has impacted. God bless.

      Thanks for your comment! I am definitely going to keep doing videos about surprising a layoff. I sometimes do cooking videos on my channel and will focus on doing budget friendly recipes and I do a lot of home decor and decorating videos so I think I am going to do some more DIY decorating on a budget videos. I will also keep doing some other videos giving advice on resume writing and interviewing since I am a Recruiter and have a lot of knowledge. Since posting these videos about being laid off my channel has doubled in subscribers so I am definitely going to take this opportunity to change up my content a little bit while still appealing to my original subscribers who came to my channel for my home lifestyle content. We have been saving for years to have a good emergency fund, but it is definitely something we are going to keep up because even when I find another job, I might be in this situation again. Luckily my husband is in the disaster restoration business so his career is a little more recession proof. It will always rain and there will always be fires. I can’t imagine what we would do if we were both laid off!

    When I got laid off in 2010, I was one of the last people left and to be let go in my department. Everyone else before me was brought into a town hall meeting and told they were going to be laid off or they were told by email or text message. I was lucky the new owners had the Division Head, Head of HR, and General Counsel for the company call me into a meeting to tell me I was being let go. But I could see the signs and tried to find a job before I got let go, unfortunately, things did not work out as planned. I have learned that when the economy is in a recession, no one is safe. If you are in a position to leave before the ship sinks, by all means do it.

    Save your severance check in the BANK. Collect your unemployment benefits until you secure another job. Take time to decompress. I was given a year advance warning about being laid off and it was still very emotional that December 7th day.

      I was denied unemployment because I was eligible for a pension which I took right away because it was a lot more money (40% of my income with my 35 years with the company!) than unemployment. UE said I would be eligible in the future if I worked so many quarters and lost another job. At 56 years old in 2008 that never happened , I worked part time jobs after that.

    if you are laid off and not in upper crust tech (years experienced Software Engineer, Programmer, Cyber Security) then you will likely be boiled down to hybrid or onsite jobs if you don't have inside connections. Companies are pushing hard now for hybrid or on site again now if they aren't hiring freeze or laying off. The mini golden era of most workers able to be 100% remote with pretty good wages is over I think.

    Always ready for disaster to happen. We are planning to pull the plug on work anyway in our mid and late 50s. My company is also cutting and re-orging but I have lived my entire life through these things and shut downs, etc. So we have 4 years living expenses in cash and can cruise for a while if need be but our investments will easily get us to the next cash in flows of a pension and SS at some point. So for us it's a different boat this time since if anything happens to my position, we just call it quits and ride off into the sunset.

    Sometimes there’s nothing you could have done about it. It’s human nature to second-guess yourself and wonder what you could have done differently. If a boss or company wants you gone, you’ll be gone. They will build a case against you. Happened to me. I’m in a better place now though. All these large companies are nothing but peas in a pod now, in every aspect. Don’t beat yourself up.
