  • On Day 1 of Diesel Power Challenge 2014, 10 reader-selected trucks are strapped down for the chassis dyno competition held at ATS Diesel. This event is all about the numbers as each vehicle's peak horsepower and torque numbers are added together for an overall total per pull. With Nitrous allowed, each contender is given 3 chances to score the highest and earn bragging rights as the most powerful truck!
    Diesel Power Challenge 2014 is a weeklong torture test that features 5 events, 10 trucks, 8,000hp, and nearly 15,000 lb-ft of torque. We push Power Stroke, Cummins, and Duramax-powered trucks well beyond their limits in search of the ultimate diesel. View full coverage here: www.dieselpower...

    One thing people don't seem to understand is that you can make an insane amount of power with out having to blow big plumes of black smoke. Gale Banks has proved this. I mean the 04 Ram made some good numbers and wasn't rollin coal.

    • @larryspiller15
      @larryspiller15 10 лет назад +1

      As far as I knew, rolling coal directly links to unburnt fuel so yes he is the man for proving it. But also at the same time I kind of would like to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and assume they run rich rather then risking running lean and causing damage.. one last thing though, wouldn't that black smoke pile up in your engine after time?

    • @ChargedTTq
      @ChargedTTq 10 лет назад +3

      What even more people don't seem to understand is that with a given amount of air that a specific turbo can move. To make the absolute most power you will end up smoking like a 1800's chimney.
      Gale Banks vehicles don't smoke because he doesn't want them to. He runs massively more boost and high airflow to prevent smoke. I can guarantee you that if he allowed them to smoke they could make more power. (he would of course never admit this for marketing purposes) There is also a reason GBE is a small company in the diesel performance industry. Nobody buy's his product.
      Professional truck pullers with million dollar teams smoke more than anyone. And the racing sanctions have specific restrictions on how big of a turbo you can use, that is how they control power levels for every class. Even for the most expensive builds by the premier expert engineers in the sport there is tons of smoke.

    • @hershy314
      @hershy314 10 лет назад +1

      ChargedTTq point is you don't need to be blowin black smoke to make a lot power. Black smoke isn't cool or anything. All it is is unburnt fuel.

    • @ChargedTTq
      @ChargedTTq 10 лет назад +1

      hershy314 "Partially" burned fuel.
      Actually the chemical energy remaining in soot is probably 1/1000th of the original fuel.... so "unburnt" isn't exactly true.

    Nothing exploded on the dyno? That's a huge improvement from last year! =P Nice to see what seems to be more stable builds this year. At least so far. Last year felt a bit like amateur hour in that regard. Big numbers are worth nothing if it won't hold up. As they say, if you wanna finish first, first you must finish! =)

  • @Nozerone
    @Nozerone 10 лет назад +1

    Do these guys ever consider that the loss of power isn't only due to the altitude? Yes altitude plays a hand, but with out the smoke getting vented some of it is going to get sucked back into the engine. With their closed dyno room, they are forcing the trucks to run with less oxygen due to exhaust gasses being sucked back in. I bet they would get better numbers if they would vent the exhaust out.

      TheDutyPaid
      That may be true, but in normal operation most diesel engines are lean burn, thus no unburnt diesil actully makes it out the exhaust pipe. The only problem that leaves is the excess oxygen can form nitros oxides, which is one of the primary agents in low hanging smog around cities, so many vehicles now have blu-tech or similar post combustion additives that basically eliminate this issue. However its also worth noting that in most modern petrol engines you have a catalytic converter, so you don't actually have petrol fumes in the exhaust either. This means in either case a modern vehicle is fairly clean, with the danger to health coming only from carbon-monoxide and danger to the enviroment basically only green house gas emissions. On the other hand these race turned motors aren't a example of this... they may pollute badly but are so rare they don't make up a sizable amount of total emissions, so any concerns over there damage to the environment are minimal, although some states make them illegal for road use via smog laws to ensure they don't become more common for non-race applications.

    • @Paipol666
      @Paipol666 10 лет назад +1

      i'm not an expert, but i doubt that does not pollute...that smoke is caused by bad combustion of the fuel as far as i know, so all those fine particles must go somewhere in the soil, or in the lungs of the people nearby..

    • @enigmaPL
      @enigmaPL 9 лет назад

      michael callegaro It's soot. It falls to the ground and is harmless. Don't eat it and you'll be just fine. Give so much of a shit about pollution? Try petitioning to just about every single industrial property in existence instead, as the contribution to pollution comes primarily from industrial buildings. Vehicles need to stop being the scapegoat for pollution. They're not a significant factor, even with all the vehicles on the road, showing how insignificant they are on a case by case basis.
