    Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

71 years old… St. Catharines born and bred. Used to spend a lot of my summers visiting Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie. Neil Peart lived not far from me. Sadly the old midway has been gone for years and years now. But you can still walk the area by the beach, and ride on the famous merry-go-round carousel . Still only costs 5 cents.

Just too brilliant. Geddy Lee and Chris Squire from Yes made you wanna play a Rickenbakker bass like a weapon. The first gig I ever went to was Rush on Moving Puctures tour 1981, remains the best gig Ive ever attended. Only thing coming vaguely close was Radiohead in 2000. Prog rock rules.

This is the album where I really got to know Rush. And this song, written from Neil Peart's boyhood memories of Lakeside Park, brims with love and discovery of a place in time and a band, just learning their chops...so new, yet to be that supergroup... just breaks my heart as I turn 59 this year, missing Mr. Peart and the words he weaved..
In all the history of man, weren't we all so blessed that we came up in the days of rock n roll, and DOUBLY blessed that we came up in the days of quadrophonic sound and in the days and night of RUSH! BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL RUSH!

That’s because Geddy has two other separate brains hidden in his nose. His main brain sings while one brain in his nose shreds the bass and the other controls his feet and the keyboards with them.
This can only explain how he sings lead vocals, often with a completely different beat structure than the bass parts he shreds. That’s my theory anyway.
I’ve seen them live on every tour since Permanent Waves and Geddy never misses a beat. It’s an amazing thing to watch. That why every Rush concerts were my favorite over all other groups from that time period that I went to.

Neil brought me here - RIP...I have been a fan from the beginning; the only poster I had on my wall growing up came from my All the Worlds a Stage album. In those days...I read many fantasy novels and was tripping with the best of them - so the Tolkien theme they were experimenting with after Rutsey left the band spoke volumes to me as a teenager. You will be missed my friend...

When I was a kid in the 70s, I had a drummer buddy who I jammed with a lot, and our favorite bands were Rush and Aerosmith. He was a great drummer and played the tenor toms in our high school marching band. This was kind of the coveted "first chair" position for percussionists in the band and he was clearly the best. But he was also like me, kind of a trouble-making rock and roller, so he'd frequently go off script and do things that pissed off the band director. One of those things was that during football games, as they stood on the sidelines and they were only supposed to play approved percussion "stings" at the appropriate moments in the action and lulls, he would catch my eye as I sat in the stands and play the intro fill to "Lakeside Park", or one of the fills from the intro to "Draw the Line" by Aerosmith. Every time the band director would shoot him a blazing dirty look, or walk over and chew him out, but he'd just smile and nod, because he knew he wasn't going to be demoted for it. He was too good.
Still love this song and this whole album, and I can't hear it without smiling and thinking of my buddy Hugh.

I was in my backyard one summer afternoon in the mid 70s and my friend Paul next door was blaring Lakeside Park out the window on his crummy little "Brand Names" stereo.. even on that shitty little nickel on the tone arm set up.. it was an absolute avalanche of chords and melody.. I was instantly hooked.. still am.. RIP Neil Peart..
