True Faith - New Order. The last one, I don't think was played on a "live" drum set though... But if it was, then that's dope.

Iron Maiden : Where Eagles Dare 05. Twisted Sister : We're not gonna take it. Thank you for the great content!
You're obviously just young and kind of ignorant regarding older music. The Police were a HUGE band from the '80s, and I've heard 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' countless times. That song has over 38 million views on RUclips.
@@mobus1603 it's just a joke based on the Loki meme. And many of the songs Rick praises have barely been in my rotation because by the mid-90s I'd heard them enough to last a lifetime and there's always songs ,new and old, I haven't heard yet.
I’m right there with you. I knew 9 of these songs. It’s all about what type of music you’re into. I’m sure I could make a list of the Top 20 Jazz or R&B Drum Intros according to my own opinion, and a lot of people would be lost.
When the Levee Breaks is the first song that came to mind when I saw the Title of the Video. A lot of great choices in the Rundown. Real drums add so much life and feeling to songs as shown in the Top Song as it is essentially the Lead instrument throughout the song. I love certain Solo Artists, but a Band with a great Drummer is something to experience.
Amazing list. I would add: You could be mine - GNR Sister Europe - The Psychedelic Furs Something - Beatles Rock'n Roll in Hight School - Ramones Whip It- Devo
I just came here to say Stargazer. How he didn't put this (or any other Rainbow) intros on here is beyond me. Especially considering some of the crap ones that were included.
When Cozy played Stargazer live it sometimes ran for 15 - 17 minutes depending on how Richie felt on the night....within seconds of finishing he then had to launch into Still im Sad which included his 1812 Overture!!!! He was a powerhouse!!!!
The drum intro to Iron Maiden’s Run To The Hills should’ve at least been an honorable mention, along with Judas Priest’s Painkiller and Megadeth’s Rust In Peace...Polaris.
and we want to talk about the intro of Where Eagles Dare? That is a "Really" drum Intro! Idk why iron Maiden are never mentioned on this channel. Greetings from italy!
There is no way 6:00 being out of the list. And he selected a Tool intro, that is irrelevant. Well, most of this ranking is more on popular intros, not great intros, definitely.
I feel the same way about "Dreaming", by Blondie. The drums just explode, then accelerate through the rest of the song, making it one of my favorite drum - centric songs, ever.
I was beginning to get ready to criticize Rick when... Oh... It's your #1. OK. However he should have included some of his echoplex explanation video in this video.
i just posted that before seeing this, thank you for mentioning my alltime fave! that is a great example of all his exceptional qualities: thoughtful creativity, agility and karate-chop power!
@@COIcultist we can agree to disagree....or I'd put it this way: Giles was also brilliant, and seminal. But KC 69 and KC72-74, while both Crimson, were entirely different bands. I think BB was perfect for the Larks Tongues edition, and I think his playing took a quantum leap in that unit. That's just my 2 cents.
Own first thought was We Will Rock You. Simple? Yes. Overplayed now? Yes. But sometimes something simple which strikes such a chord (ironic considering the lack of any rhythm guitar, heh) that it's played decades later are like that because of how great they are. EVERYONE knows what song it is after the first two drum hits and are ready to join in with the 'stomp' STRAIGHTaway!

@@jelmo1057 This song was really originally a John Lee Hooker number from 1948 called Boogie Chillen'. Slim Harpo's Shake Your Hips from 1966 has a similar beat. @@ryanjones4150 But nobody, but nobody does it like ZZ Top. They are KNOWN worldwide,as is this drum intro, and the others that recorded this, not so much. I respect John Lee Hooker. However, ZZ Top was/is a three man band that conquered the world. RIP Dusty Baker

I didn't think of that - but yes. There is a great video by the current Wishbone Ash drummer showing how to play it. of course technically it starts with the whoosh sound. Which might give Rick an out.
Technically...there's no drum intro to the song Time. Bass, guitar and synth come in first, and the drums dance around the landscape they make. The part just before the lyrics is not an intro, as the song is already 2 minutes in. But...yeah. Play or even mimic that drum lick and many people would involuntarily sing the first line.
Pretty good List Rick. Some suggestions im surprised didnt make it the sheer genius of playing the rhythm on the symbol stand.. Offspring's - Come out and Play, And how can you not have Thump Thump Crack! We will rock you lol. Iggy pop- Lust for Life. Run DMC - Take the money and run. Katrina and the Waves - walking on sunshine. The Ventures Hawaii Five O theme. Top 5 was about right though!

The Body - Public Image Limited.
There's Something Going On - Frida.
True Faith - New Order.
The last one, I don't think was played on a "live" drum set though... But if it was, then that's dope.
Rick! Love your videos
A few intros that never made it to your list but worth mentioning(in my opinion) :
01. Deep Purple : Fireball
02. Rainbow : Stargazer
03. Judas Priest : Painkiller
04. Iron Maiden : Where Eagles Dare
05. Twisted Sister : We're not gonna take it.
Thank you for the great content!
Yes, Stargazer and Fireball.
Stargazer should be number 1.
Surprised Stargazer didn’t get a mention
“Run to the Hills!”
Exciter by Judas Priest, starbreaker
Rick: this song is instantly recognizable/one of my favorites
Me: I've never heard this song before in my life
You're obviously just young and kind of ignorant regarding older music.
Millennial!
A lot of the songs on the list I did not recognize, but I am not a big rock fan anyway.
I’m right there with you. I knew 9 of these songs. It’s all about what type of music you’re into. I’m sure I could make a list of the Top 20 Jazz or R&B Drum Intros according to my own opinion, and a lot of people would be lost.
Rush--“Animate”. I saw a post where you should make a top 20 on Neil Peart. I totally agree.
Slayer, SS-3. The first 45 seconds are drumming bliss! Love the channel, Rick!
You could probably do a top ten of Bonham alone.
When The Levee Breaks was literally my first thought too 🤣
How could I ever forget that song? Led Zeppelin IV was our holy grail...
I've read that that drum intro is the most sampled piece of music of all time
Take 5. From the Dave Brubeck quartet. The whole album Time Out has very interesting rhythms but Take 5 has an awesome drum intro 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁
Too true. What a great performance by Joe Morello! Awesome sound as well.
Yes, quite surprised Joe Morello not on the list. Glaring omission.
Take Five also has a brilliant segment featuring the drums at the last part of the track.
“Watching the Detectives” Elvis Costello should have at least gotten a mention.
Good choice! That’s a great one!
Two Princes - Spin Doctors, instant classic drum intro!
That one was my immediate pop-up from memory......
Wow yes. That song is great fun
I love that song, I didn't even think about it starting with drums. Great group too.
I replied as well and added Two Princes. Glad to know people still enjoy that group. The drummer is excellent.
Good call!
Amazing list. I would add:
You could be mine - GNR
Sister Europe - The Psychedelic Furs
Something - Beatles
Rock'n Roll in Hight School - Ramones
Whip It- Devo
“Stargazer” by Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow and “Exciter” by Judas Priest both have fantastic drum intros.
Cozy Powell of Rainbow was awesome, and Stargazer is proof.
Where is your star? Is it far? Is it far? When do we leave? I believe yes I believe.
STARGAZER…..COZY POWELL!!!!
@@ciccio_pa7592 .
I know. I ask this question all the time too.
I guess iron maiden is a little too heavy metal for Rick.
Yes, Where eagles dare needs to be on the list, but if it comes to 80s Rock and Metal Rick is like: "count me out".😅
Something tells me you like metal
To me, Trust is Megadeth's top drum intro, but I'm with you on Painkiller and Run to the Hills.
We’re Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Suster - I know the “hair” metal gets no love, but that’s a really great (and distinctive) intro!
Top 10...
But hey is TS., inaceptable!
Iconic! Good call
Agreed...instantly recognizable!
Right, didn't think of that one.
Fuck what genre it is; it's kickass; it's instantly recognizable, and it has a distinct feel that no other drummer has copied. Huge miss-out.
one of my all-time favs is Rush/Peart "Lakeside Park"
simple, melodic, and that sound! gets me going every time i hear it..!
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare and Run To The Hills
Guns ‘n Roses - You Could Be Mine
Dream Theater - 6:00
CoffeeMatt indeed, Pain Killer definitely deserves to be there
6 oclock should here
Definitely painkiller. It's the first song that came to mind when I saw this video.
I'd say Honor Thy Father more than 6:00
There is no way 6:00 being out of the list. And he selected a Tool intro, that is irrelevant. Well, most of this ranking is more on popular intros, not great intros, definitely.
Song 2 by blur and Come Out and Play by Offspring would be great for this list.
Song 2!
Or Gone Away by Offspring too
Ur totally right come out and play is a classic drum song
My tought's exactly.
Yes, for sure.
Okay, he played Hot for Teacher without an overdub. That's insane.
Alex's kit was all roto toms
Ha ha! I knew it was going to be when the levee breaks. Just started watching your stuff a month or two ago. Love it baby.
Pornhub intro is the best one
Yes
@Haku "OmG ThAtS SoO GrOsS". Grow up kiddo
@Haku 🤡🤡🤡
@Haku .......stfU
@Haku 🤡🤡🤡
Wipeout? The entire song is carried by the drummer. Instantly recognizable.
I suppose he disqualified it because the song starts with a vocal.
wipe out is made for drummers certainely. i love so much this tittle, it's a fabulous song for all who had rythm in their skin :)
I feel the same way about "Dreaming", by Blondie. The drums just explode, then accelerate through the rest of the song, making it one of my favorite drum - centric songs, ever.
When he said drummers learned it when he was growing up, I immediately thought it was Wipeout. Anytime drum sticks are in my dad's hands he plays it.
@@willer3399 You could argue that the vocal cord is a drum. It's a membrane stretched tight and the air molecules hitting it are little "drumsticks".
When The Levee Breaks is the perfect drum intro and there's no changing my mind
Gonna need a bigger bass drum.
I completely agree…. But I think Trust by Megadeth should’ve been in the top 20 if not the upper top 10
First one I thought of when I saw the title ...
I was beginning to get ready to criticize Rick when... Oh... It's your #1. OK. However he should have included some of his echoplex explanation video in this video.
@@craighenebury259 Gonna need Bonham, Or his reincarnation Yoyoka.
Bruford’s brief but characteristically precise intro to South Side of the Sky (Fragile) always grabbed me.
I was waiting for Bill too.
i just posted that before seeing this, thank you for mentioning my alltime fave! that is a great example of all his exceptional qualities: thoughtful creativity, agility and karate-chop power!
@@michaelshore2609 I like listening to Bill, some of the Bruford albums are brilliant, but I think Michael Giles sounded better with Crimson.
Judas Priest - Painkiller. How many asked for this piece?
i was waiting as well.
Me too ..
i was just about to say that song
Every-fucking-one.
Maybe its too much for the drummer?
My first thought was Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare, totally iconic and instantly recognisable.
Or painkiller by Judas priest
Not a popular song, but you should check out Varga - Greed for a cool drum intro.
Not a well known song
Run to the hills?
Jack Jones did an amazing job, despite appearing to be in near constant pain. Hope he gets better soon.
Someone get that man a laxative!
@@godwantsplastic I was wondering what was up with him too, then towards the end I saw that massive key light and I was like, "Oh, I wouldn't look up either."
Particularly thought 50ways was absolutely spot on…but Rock n Roll started right but didn’t exit right.
That Hot for Teacher drum solo that Alex Van Halen did was crazy
Most recognizable
We Will Rock You - Queen (Live only. Studio is stomp and clap)
Susie Q - CCR
Truth. We will Rock you is so simple, yet so immediately identifiable.
Maybe because it's not drums? It's foot stomps and claps. Does that count?
I miss Dani California by Chad Smith. So simple and so recognizable. You know instantly what it is.
antiqueA true one of the most underrated drummers ever
Am I the only one who’s missing Wipeout by the Surfaris? That intro is classic
Yep, that one's killer!
That and Hawaii Five-O.
No you're not.
Apparently "all time" only goes back to 1970
You’re spot on. First intro I thought of.
I always enjoyed Ringo's intro on What You're Doing. The song also finishes the same way out begins.
I notice a disgusting lack of “Never gonna give you up” by Rick Astley
Hysterical!
Booooooooooo
@@DCAbsolutJohn1 ooooooooooß
Well played mate, well played
@Big Poppa making Larry David jealous eh?
What about Hawaii Five-O, by the Ventures? It is instantly recognizable and spent a pretty big chunk of time on the Billboard charts.
It's a crime this isnt on the list.
The University of Hawai'i marching band plays a great version of this.
Book 'em Dano!
Yes!
got to see them in the late 90s
Heres some instantly recognizable drum intros you missed :
Foo fighters - My Hero
Disturbed - Down with the sickness
Coldplay - In my place
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Queen - We will rock you
Blur - Song 2
System of a down - Sugar
NiN - Closer
Marilyn Manson - the love song
Theres enough iconic drum intros out there to make a part 2 of this video
Undone by Weezer. I can't believe he didn't say it. Nobody in the comments is saying it either and that's crazy!
NIN quote a lot better letting you❤
Honky Tonk Women R. S
I will add to your list this songs
Megadeth - Trust
Sepultura - Territory
The Offspring - Come Out And Play
Gojira - Born For One Thing
We Will Rock You wasn't a drum intro. It was feet stomps and hand claps.
Jack Jones is a delightfully amazing drummer.
I know “iron man” is a simple kick but the moment you hear it you know
sounds like a door closed by someone repetitively ;-)
@@xavier4728 sounds like my life
@@xavier4728 No it doesn’t.
Yes, BUT as soon as the REAL drums come in around 30 seconds into the song, I HAVE TO NOD MY HEAD
Also sounds like, "Go to hell" by Nashville Pussy.
ZZ TOP La Grange, sticks on the rim of the snare, totally recognizable, blockbuster hit.
LaGrange by Rock & Roll Hall of Farmer Frank Beard of ZZ Top is in more commercials, and movies than any others on the list, hard to believe it’s not on the list let alone #1.
@@jelmo1057 This song was really originally a John Lee Hooker number from 1948 called Boogie Chillen'. Slim Harpo's Shake Your Hips from 1966 has a similar beat. To me, The Rolling Stones version of Shake Your Hips from Exile on Main Street ( 1972) has the most similar drum part, almost exactly like ZZ Top's, which came out a year later.
Damn good call. La Grange should definitely be on here
@@ryanjones4150 But nobody, but nobody does it like ZZ Top. They are KNOWN worldwide,as is this drum intro, and the others that recorded this, not so much. I respect John Lee Hooker. However, ZZ Top was/is a three man band that conquered the world. RIP Dusty Baker
" Gimme all you lovin' " from ZZ TOP you mean... La Grange doesn't start with drums ..
Why is Song 2 not even in honorable mentions, the entire beginning is just drums carrying the song with a cool and inventive groove
Meme boi G this was actually the very first song that came to my mind when I read the title of the video..
Meme boi G I thought the exact same when I saw the title and thought that song 2 had to be on here
WOOOHOOOO

But then I've never heard of Blur in his channel yet...
@@noursarhan8695 It's Blur's only good song. But we can forgive them b/c he went on to create Gorillaz.
Billion Dollar Babies, Alice Cooper, Stargazer Blackmore's Rainbow, Four Wheel Drive, Jethro Tull, You only have time for so many but you Nailed most on my list! Great list!!
Painkiller, Judas Priest - eats all of these intros. Arguably the most iconic and recognisable Metal intro of all time.
For sure, also Rush's By Tor And The Snow Dog!!
@@robertosharplesshecht7805 Hey Bob, you are heading that way dude! Every day that passes.
After about a dozen comments I went to RUclips and checked it out. Your are all correct, intro to Painkiller is killer.
I'd throw Over the Mountain by Ozzy on that metal drum intro list for sure.
“Two Princes” by The Spin Doctors goes pretty hard and is instantly recognisable.
agreed, shoulda been in there
Yes that was my first thought that entered my mind when I saw the category. Can’t believe it wasn’t even in the honorable mentions.
Came for this reply. Three beats in and you know what song you've signed up for.

Yaaaassss! 🤘
Awesome choice!

The intro to Rain by The Beatles is quick and straight to the point. Get Off My Cloud and Honky Tonk Women by The Rolling Stones are unforgettable intros
Honked tonk women is wanna of my favourites

Sgt. Pepper reprise should be number one
I have always loved Ian Paice's drum intro on Fireball by Deep Purple and the drum fill intro Lee Kerslake played on Over the mountain - Ozzy Osbourne
@@vetni8220 👌 best intro!!!
Yes! 13 year old me was wondering where the opening track from Diary of a Madman was!
Great call on Fireball.
Ton loc’s wild thing, instantly recognizable and easy to play for a beginner. I got a drum set, and as soon as I first hit those toms, I immediately felt compelled to learn that intro. Got me feeling like a real drummer within minutes
Also ballroom blitz is strikingly similar to one of my favorite songs: radar love
"NO Excuses" Alice in Chains honorable mention. Really kicks off the acoustic guitar groove.
I thought the same Sean Kinney is an amazingly underrated drummer, him&Matt Cameron along with dave Grohl are all amazing drummers,I love Charlie Watts,Stewart Copeland&Remi from the Stone roses,But the King of all the drummers 4 me is of course Mr John Henry Bonham may he rest in peace🙏💕🤘💜

Cannot believe you failed to include "Fireball" by Deep Purple! Saw the roadies set up a 2nd kick for Ian Paice just for that song in 1971 concert!
I was going to say that!
@@iansteel1447 me too!!!!
I find this double kick -thing difficult to believe, because Fireball is quite playable with a single kick. Perhaps it was just for the show?
+1 for Fireball from me too. My Deep Purple fav just for general drums (not intro of course) is Burn.
I didn't think of that - but yes. There is a great video by the current Wishbone Ash drummer showing how to play it. of course technically it starts with the whoosh sound. Which might give Rick an out.
Nick Mason's Intro to Pink Floyd's Time. Now THAT'S an Iconic Drum Intro.
YES
That drum intro is so good it spans time and space... Pink Floyd is outta this world
If you count the paper tearing and cash register sounds as “drums” money would be sick too
Technically...there's no drum intro to the song Time. Bass, guitar and synth come in first, and the drums dance around the landscape they make. The part just before the lyrics is not an intro, as the song is already 2 minutes in. But...yeah. Play or even mimic that drum lick and many people would involuntarily sing the first line.
More of a "drum opening"... probably the only one in its category
Stargazer, Rainbow by the late, great Cozy Powell. Brilliant drum intro.
that’s what i was waiting for
Paul Cornwall one of my favorites
NonLocalYokel neither Stargazer nor Painkiller made it on. Felt like some glaring omissions to me.
Can’t believe it wasn’t featured.....not even an honourable mention....tragic as it is one of the greatest rock drum openings ever.
Painkiller by Judas Preist has the most recognizable drum intro ever.
Yeah. I agree
I would say that title would go to enter sandman
But it doesn't start with the drums so don't even pay attention to what I said lol
Yeah totally surprised painkiller wasnt on here.
kevinpastor666 I would say the most recognizable Judas Priest drum intro has to be Living After Midnight!!
"Over The Mountain" Ozzy Osbourne, Lee Kerslake drumming, great intro.
Yea I can't understand why that is not in the top 5.
Hey Rick. Compliments for the production and playing on this one. Nothing fancy, I know, but for me they hit the nail on the head 👍👍
