How could you leave out "Wipeout!" by the Safaris. Perhaps one of the first truly great drum intros of the modern rock music era. Bonus Points: The song-both the Surfaris' version as well as cover versions-has been featured in over 20 films and television series since 1964, appearing at least once a decade.

When Cozy played Stargazer live it sometimes ran for 15 - 17 minutes depending on how Richie felt on the night....within seconds of finishing he then had to launch into Still im Sad which included his 1812 Overture!!!! He was a powerhouse!!!!

When the Levee Breaks is the first song that came to mind when I saw the Title of the Video. A lot of great choices in the Rundown. Real drums add so much life and feeling to songs as shown in the Top Song as it is essentially the Lead instrument throughout the song. I love certain Solo Artists, but a Band with a great Drummer is something to experience.
Technically...there's no drum intro to the song Time. Bass, guitar and synth come in first, and the drums dance around the landscape they make. The part just before the lyrics is not an intro, as the song is already 2 minutes in. But...yeah. Play or even mimic that drum lick and many people would involuntarily sing the first line.
Heres some instantly recognizable drum intros you missed : Foo fighters - My Hero Disturbed - Down with the sickness Coldplay - In my place Judas Priest - Painkiller Queen - We will rock you Blur - Song 2 System of a down - Sugar NiN - Closer Marilyn Manson - the love song Theres enough iconic drum intros out there to make a part 2 of this video

Certainly my number one!
Yeah! It’s one of those songs you remember especially for “that drummer was just killing it!” 😎
I said the same thing!
@Power Manager He titled the segment "TOP 20 DRUM INTROS OF ALL TIME".
When my drummer let me start dabbling on his gorgeous Pearl Pro DX set, he pointed to the Wipeout roll to learn...and the entire Zep track "Good Times/Bad Times. Ouch. 😳😖🤣
My vote is for:
Judas Priest, Painkiller
You could call it more of a drum solo rather than just an intro.
I was gonna say that, I'm surprised it's not here. Best drums ever
@@glencooper43 Yeah, I was expecting it to be the #1 spot.
RUST IN PEACE... POLARIS
Most recognizable
We Will Rock You - Queen (Live only. Studio is stomp and clap)
Susie Q - CCR
Truth. We will Rock you is so simple, yet so immediately identifiable.
Maybe because it's not drums? It's foot stomps and claps. Does that count?
Another great video. I love the way the drums and bass roll together in Watching the Detectives, I might have that on my top 20.
Judas Priest's Painkiller is a must have and King Diamond's Welcome Home is another gem. Spin Doctors' Two Princes is a signature intro so unique that defines the song like none else.
Finally someone says it. Welcome Home is so good!
@@serpenth616 It does not even repeat within the song again!
I would also add SOAD TOXICITY, despite the fact that the drums join later, a very powerful drum beginning
For any metalhead, Overkill is a must! Yes I know it's not technical but so very recognizable and takes you in immediately 🤗
Yes Welcome Home is so great. And I'm not a huge Nickleback guy, but Follw You Home drum intro is badass
Other ones that could've been there:
Painkiller
The Crunge (or any zeppelin one)
Rust In Piece
Anthony Vergara Literally whan I thought when I saw the title!
Where was the following:
Painkiller - Judas Priest
We’re Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
Down With The Sickness - Disturbed
Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden
I skipped to the end to see Painkiller and I got an AC-DC drumbeat
Tyler Thederahn and Iron Maiden- where eagles dare
Joey Lavine I was trying to keep it to one song per artist
Joey Lavine that’s what I was hoping to see
@@Glizzy-Goblin 'AC/DC drum beat', sigh...
Bruford’s brief but characteristically precise intro to South Side of the Sky (Fragile) always grabbed me.
I was waiting for Bill too.
i just posted that before seeing this, thank you for mentioning my alltime fave! that is a great example of all his exceptional qualities: thoughtful creativity, agility and karate-chop power!
@@michaelshore2609 I like listening to Bill, some of the Bruford albums are brilliant, but I think Michael Giles sounded better with Crimson.
@@COIcultist we can agree to disagree....or I'd put it this way: Giles was also brilliant, and seminal. But KC 69 and KC72-74, while both Crimson, were entirely different bands. I think BB was perfect for the Larks Tongues edition, and I think his playing took a quantum leap in that unit. That's just my 2 cents.
“Stargazer” by Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow and “Exciter” by Judas Priest both have fantastic drum intros.
Cozy Powell of Rainbow was awesome, and Stargazer is proof.
I just came here to say Stargazer. How he didn't put this (or any other Rainbow) intros on here is beyond me. Especially considering some of the crap ones that were included.
When Cozy played Stargazer live it sometimes ran for 15 - 17 minutes depending on how Richie felt on the night....within seconds of finishing he then had to launch into Still im Sad which included his 1812 Overture!!!! He was a powerhouse!!!!
Where is your star? Is it far? Is it far? When do we leave? I believe yes I believe.
STARGAZER…..COZY POWELL!!!!
Very surprised Iron Maiden 'Run to the Hills' didn't even get a mention. Or Judas Priest 'Painkiller'
Phil Bradshaw Agreed. What about where Eagles dare
@@Kyle-bw3du : "Where Eagles Dare" is an absolutely killer drum intro.
I'm a Clive Burr fan and he definitely deserved a place in your list.
Seriously, Painkiller is such a legend that it makes the song instantly recognizable after half a second of that intro.
Run to the Hills was honestly the first song I thought of when I saw the title of this video
Rainbow stargazer was an amazing drump intro, an entire journey in itself, but that era was pretty hard to choose from
This is what immediately came to mind. Epic intro.
Absolute legend intro by Cozy Powell 🎵
I was thinking 'Long Live Rock and Roll'
Amen!
Great share
Really pleased you put Steve Gadd's 50ways intro. Also Ringo on Tomorrow Never Knows, I don't remember that much cymbal. I would add Sound Chaser by Yes, outstanding! intro All in all a super list Rick.
Song 2 - Blur
Bonus, it's really fun to play.
Yes, I play air drums perfectly to this one.
and dance to
Whoo-hoo!!!
Stargazer, Rainbow by the late, great Cozy Powell. Brilliant drum intro.
that’s what i was waiting for
Paul Cornwall one of my favorites
NonLocalYokel neither Stargazer nor Painkiller made it on. Felt like some glaring omissions to me.
Can’t believe it wasn’t featured.....not even an honourable mention....tragic as it is one of the greatest rock drum openings ever.
Saw the title and immediately thought, "When The Levee Breaks". There can be no other.
David Levin - No drum intro comes close
Slayer, SS-3. The first 45 seconds are drumming bliss! Love the channel, Rick!
“Two Princes” by The Spin Doctors goes pretty hard and is instantly recognisable.
agreed, shoulda been in there
Yes that was my first thought that entered my mind when I saw the category. Can’t believe it wasn’t even in the honorable mentions.
Came for this reply. Three beats in and you know what song you've signed up for.
Pocket Full Of Kryptonite is an amazing album
I swear I didn’t see your post and thought and posted nearly the same thing. Obviously I agree with yah.
The drum intro to Iron Maiden’s Run To The Hills should’ve at least been an honorable mention, along with Judas Priest’s Painkiller and Megadeth’s Rust In Peace...Polaris.
and we want to talk about the intro of Where Eagles Dare? That is a "Really" drum Intro! Idk why iron Maiden are never mentioned on this channel. Greetings from italy!
@@ciccio_pa7592 .
I know. I ask this question all the time too.
I guess iron maiden is a little too heavy metal for Rick.
Yes, Where eagles dare needs to be on the list, but if it comes to 80s Rock and Metal Rick is like: "count me out".😅
Something tells me you like metal
To me, Trust is Megadeth's top drum intro, but I'm with you on Painkiller and Run to the Hills.
We’re Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Suster - I know the “hair” metal gets no love, but that’s a really great (and distinctive) intro!
Top 10...
But hey is TS., inaceptable!
Iconic! Good call
Agreed...instantly recognizable!
Right, didn't think of that one.
Fuck what genre it is; it's kickass; it's instantly recognizable, and it has a distinct feel that no other drummer has copied. Huge miss-out.
Amazing list. I would add:
You could be mine - GNR
Sister Europe - The Psychedelic Furs
Something - Beatles
Rock'n Roll in Hight School - Ramones
Whip It- Devo
"NO Excuses" Alice in Chains honorable mention. Really kicks off the acoustic guitar groove.
I thought the same Sean Kinney is an amazingly underrated drummer, him&Matt Cameron along with dave Grohl are all amazing drummers,I love Charlie Watts,Stewart Copeland&Remi from the Stone roses,But the King of all the drummers 4 me is of course Mr John Henry Bonham may he rest in peace🙏💕🤘💜
Definitely!
Agreed!
Totally agree!
Needed to see this.
What about Hawaii Five-O, by the Ventures? It is instantly recognizable and spent a pretty big chunk of time on the Billboard charts.
It's a crime this isnt on the list.
The University of Hawai'i marching band plays a great version of this.
Book 'em Dano!
Yes!
got to see them in the late 90s
Am I the only one who’s missing Wipeout by the Surfaris? That intro is classic
Yep, that one's killer!
That and Hawaii Five-O.
No you're not.
Apparently "all time" only goes back to 1970
You’re spot on. First intro I thought of.
5:25 Tomorrow Never Knows is such an underrated song. It’s one of my favorite songs by the Beatles. So beyond its era.
"Are you ready, Steve?" "Uh-huh!" "Andy?" "Okay..." Man, thank you for throwing in The Sweet and BALLROOM BLITZ! Made me smile!
should of been ☝🏻easily, still robert plants favourite songs🥁

Rick! Love your videos
A few intros that never made it to your list but worth mentioning(in my opinion) :
01. Deep Purple : Fireball
02. Rainbow : Stargazer
03. Judas Priest : Painkiller
04. Iron Maiden : Where Eagles Dare
05. Twisted Sister : We're not gonna take it.
Thank you for the great content!
Yes, Stargazer and Fireball.
Stargazer should be number 1.
Surprised Stargazer didn’t get a mention
“Run to the Hills!”
Exciter by Judas Priest, starbreaker
Painkiller - Judas priest.
Fireball - Deep Purple.
6:00 - Dream Theater .
I missed those 3 here
I'd put Honor Thy Father over 6:00
Sark right??? 😬😬 man painkiller was the 2nd drum intro I thought of, so big & so powerful, with the riff👊🏼💥
Oooh yeah! Ian Paice, Fireball.
dude ! in high school i Iearned how to do the intro to pain killer on my desk and I still do it to this day.
6:00 is iconic.
Jack Jones is a delightfully amazing drummer.
You could probably do a top ten of Bonham alone.
When The Levee Breaks was literally my first thought too 🤣
How could I ever forget that song? Led Zeppelin IV was our holy grail...
I've read that that drum intro is the most sampled piece of music of all time
I thought all the time painkiller was going to be number 1 🤷🏻♂️ and any Portnoy intro to be on the list, like 6 o clock
6:00 is my absolute all time favorite!
Bigtime miss by Rick!
Honor Thy Father
Mate con mote que haces aquí!!!!, Soy sub!!!!!
Absolutely the first song that came to mind with this topic
Nick Mason's Intro to Pink Floyd's Time. Now THAT'S an Iconic Drum Intro.
YES
That drum intro is so good it spans time and space... Pink Floyd is outta this world
If you count the paper tearing and cash register sounds as “drums” money would be sick too
Technically...there's no drum intro to the song Time. Bass, guitar and synth come in first, and the drums dance around the landscape they make. The part just before the lyrics is not an intro, as the song is already 2 minutes in. But...yeah. Play or even mimic that drum lick and many people would involuntarily sing the first line.
More of a "drum opening"... probably the only one in its category
one of my all-time favs is Rush/Peart "Lakeside Park"
simple, melodic, and that sound! gets me going every time i hear it..!
Painkiller, Judas Priest - eats all of these intros. Arguably the most iconic and recognisable Metal intro of all time.
For sure, also Rush's By Tor And The Snow Dog!!
@@robertosharplesshecht7805 Hey Bob, you are heading that way dude! Every day that passes.
After about a dozen comments I went to RUclips and checked it out. Your are all correct, intro to Painkiller is killer.
I'd throw Over the Mountain by Ozzy on that metal drum intro list for sure.
Heres some instantly recognizable drum intros you missed :
Foo fighters - My Hero
Disturbed - Down with the sickness
Coldplay - In my place
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Queen - We will rock you
Blur - Song 2
System of a down - Sugar
NiN - Closer
Marilyn Manson - the love song
Theres enough iconic drum intros out there to make a part 2 of this video
Undone by Weezer. I can't believe he didn't say it. Nobody in the comments is saying it either and that's crazy!
NIN quote a lot better letting you❤
Honky Tonk Women R. S
I will add to your list this songs
Megadeth - Trust
Sepultura - Territory
The Offspring - Come Out And Play
Gojira - Born For One Thing
We Will Rock You wasn't a drum intro. It was feet stomps and hand claps.
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare and Run To The Hills
Guns ‘n Roses - You Could Be Mine
Dream Theater - 6:00
CoffeeMatt indeed, Pain Killer definitely deserves to be there
6 oclock should here
Definitely painkiller. It's the first song that came to mind when I saw this video.
I'd say Honor Thy Father more than 6:00
There is no way 6:00 being out of the list. And he selected a Tool intro, that is irrelevant. Well, most of this ranking is more on popular intros, not great intros, definitely.
My top drum intros in no particular order
Billion dollar babies - Alice cooper
Painkiller - judas priest
Where eagles dare - Iron maiden
Crucify - the almighty
One little victory - rush
Denim and leather - saxon
Strutter - kiss
Dance on a volcano - genesis
Blackest eyes - porcupine tree
Shake hands with beef - primus
Dream Theater - 6:00
Dream Theater - Honor thy Father
Mike Portnoy just kills these openings
Franz Lüdicke agreed.
I was going to comment the same. It is so disheartening that I had to scroll 35 comments down to find someone who agrees. And why does it only have 11 likes?!
I was really waiting for these to pop up.
Uhm why 6min?
@@traviswilliamson5780 That's the name of the song, not a time stamp. And they probably weren't chosen due to their difficulty to play.
I love the intro to “No Excuses” by Alice In Chains.
What about Angry Chair?
Came here to say this.
Don’t Follow. First song I learned on guitar.
@@brennenfitzgerald I love Don’t Follow, but it doesn’t have a drum intro. In fact, the drums don’t come in until that fast section of the song when Layne comes in. Also I don’t think that song would ever be on a list like this because unfortunately it isn’t very popular. Such an underrated song.
@@mr.noride7226 True. Should be in the guitar intro list, but hardly anyone knows it.
I think Stargazer by Rainbow deserves a mention
I do so also. It should be under the the first three places.
IraqiNoob no se la sabe el baterista jajajaja
Excatly
That’s what I thought. Stargazer will be the easy pick in Japan where I grew up. Cozy Powell and the band rainbow is huge in Japan
Apparently really good drumming doesn't matter here
I always enjoyed Ringo's intro on What You're Doing. The song also finishes the same way out begins.
No Excuses by Alice In Chains is definitely one of my favorites!!
Yeah, I thought for sure it would be on the list
The first song I thought of. Classic!
Oh yes of course! Classic intro.
This song definitely worthy of being on that list. In my opinion, Sean Kinney is the most underrated drummer of all time.
facts!
"Over The Mountain" Ozzy Osbourne, Lee Kerslake drumming, great intro.
Yea I can't understand why that is not in the top 5.
I miss Dani California by Chad Smith. So simple and so recognizable. You know instantly what it is.

Top 3 for sure
The very drum intro that got me into Maiden. Clearly this guy doesn’t do metal because a whole list of drum intro,s and no mention of Nicko Mc Brain. Yet he puts two from U2 in there. Go figure…
I concur...
How about “Run for the Hills”? As well. I for one knew it wouldn’t be there but “Over the Mountain” by Ozzy has a killer drum intro.
I tought about "where eagles dare" too
Great list of drummers. One outstanding drum opening which was forgotten here is from the song “Stargazer” by Rainbow, and the drummer Cozy Powell
My top position. The first one I thought of.
I was thinking the same thing when I read your comment. How the hell is stargazer not included.
Don't bring me down ELO!
Number 1. Stargazer, and dont forgot Where eagles dare iron maiden on the 20' list!

Dave Clark was vastly underrated. Other drummers compared his unique style to machine gun fire.
It has to be "Rainbow - Stargazer", it's a brilliant drum intro!
Yup. Cozy Powell's drumming was simply awesome in this song. It deserves a Top 5, at least.
Sadly U-2 got in the way. It is mind-boggling not to have Stargazer intro here. At least Mick Tucker got honorable mention.
