Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

All the other great guitarists out their are pretty much either solo acts (Satriani), or the overwhelming dominant stars of the band (EVH). Much easier that way. ONLY Lifeson stands toe to toe with the greatest bassist and greatest drummer in history and STILL is in the top 5 guitarists of all time. The secret is, he plays for the sake of the song, not for the sake of the guitarist.

If you meant he hasn't received the "world's best" plaudits that Ged & Neil had, you're wildly clinging on to things that don't mean anything. Alex has easily influenced as many people as Neil and Ged have in their respective instruments. And since many people don't take as much interest in bass or drums, Alex's sound has more easily arguably been more influential in their success - which would explain why people kept wanting them to get back to their guitar lead sound.
Equally arguably Neil was the weakest link because there are a few drummers who could play the same stuff. That's how ridiculous an argument this is.

They're all three incredible musicians, I'm just stating as far as ranking them amongst their peers Geddy and Neil are the best of the best. It's less a comment about Alex not being great, it's just a testament to how great the other two are.

THIS A TRIO of musicians that should be regarded as the founders of the best alternative rock music ever. Geddy, Neil, Alex, (Rutsy) are something that needs to be thought about and realized, then enjoyed, once that has occurred, then celebrated. nothing is better then this awesome realization of what LIFE AND MUSIC CAN BE.
Geddy at the peak of his vocal power. I get that some prefer his later renditions, but there's something undeniable about his ability to belt his voice into the stratosphere.

I have to say I agree with you. I don't see hardly any new stuff that is worth listening to more than once or twice. There are a few acts that are worthy, but they are so hard to find in the morass of mediocrity that is out there. I've watched this video about a half dozen times now, and I've listened to 2112 a couple hundred times over the years.

there are so many better drummers. you sound like a fan and not a musician. Neil was okay.. played pretty straight ahead parts. He was just a great great great team player. That gets points. But he wasn't doing anything many others could then, and do now.
@@morbidmanmusic he wrote the lyrics, created the narrative concepts for the albums...played a full part in creating the arrangements...played melodic instrumental percussion AND played with a tight dynamic musical style that always served the song, not many drummers have the chops to be a songwriter...Neil Peart did.
I play the drums many years Neil’s approach and attack on the trap set was pretty powerful and his imagination is what sets him apart from an average drummer

Nothing remotely close to this these days. 3 very talented men who when they came together definitely had a synergy. Masters of the time change signature music, they made it cohesive. Best of all they were always a team, no competing ego's. We were blessed for 40 years it was a great run. Thanks Geddy Neil and Alex ....... : )
As both a Drummer and Bassist, Alex just blows my mind, one of the few guitarists I can list as a favorite

Peart's passing today has led me here. Needed to pay my respects to the master lyricist and surgeon on the drums. Forever will be remembered as superb musician and resilient human being. He will be missed by many. Hail to Mr. Peart!

He led the band into the history books. Made the three of them into in my opinion the Greatest Power Trio Ever. I’m sure others will maybe dispute that but I did say it was my opinion. Saw them in Rockford twice, Madison once and Chicago three times. All totally unforgettable and each with improved skills, sound and showmanship. And most of all that I liked growing up thru those times of my youth.

Let's not look past the fact that he was recorded making this statement on Black&White videotape. I'm impressed by the stunning sound quality of this clip.
True and I caught this tour when it happened but they did have 4 studios albums on release at this time. And each record was an evolution so that, combined with the relentless touring, might have made them feel as if a song like Fly By Night was old as well as Workin Man.

It's hard to believe how good these three musicians are here in just their early 20's - just kids really - and so mature as artists too. I'm glad they never bored or tired of their craft and kept giving us great music. Thanks guys!

Amen to that. I remember seeing them in '82, Geddy's voice cracked while singing the " oooooo ooooh yeah! On 2112 overture. I, too, prefer this era of Geddy's vox. They were primo.
It's so much fun to watch Geddy in his youth, just nailing those vocals. Rush is truly one of the greatest bands of all time.

I love Rush (I've seen them 5 times), but I don't think he was exactly nailing the vocals that night. There were a few out of tune spots, and some low strength (maybe miking, maybe the mix). Nothing major. I always wondered what they would have sounded like with a different vocalist. I was always intrigued with his vocals, though. I'm impressed that he was able to sound like that for as many years as he did.
As a music teacher that I am for so many years already, I just have something to say, RUSH FOREVER AND EVER 🎼🥁🎵🥁🎼🎸🎵🎸❤️❤️‼️Neil Peart was is and will always be The Greatest Drummer of all times👏👏‼️
One of the things that always impressed me about Rush was that they always sounded as good Live as in the studio on a record.

I had their albums back in the day. I thought that they may had been using some kinds of affects. So high and gravelly.
This is a trio with youthful (all around 23-24 years of age) exuberance belting out some raw heavy progressive rock. They would continue to record and tour for 40 more years after that. 40 years!!!! Let that sink in.
We can all agree that Neil Peart has left us in awe and inspired to make the most of every day.

I was there with the woman who is still my wife. The bill was Montrose/Rush/Foghat and Foghat was who we came to see, having seen them do a tremendous show at the Wollman Rink in Central Park that summer. I remember that we hated Rush probably because of the unfamiliarity of the high pitched vocal. They had a following that took up the first few rows to the right side of the stage who were very enthusiastic. You know, people who wanted everyone to know they were the first to discover something. Turned out they were right and while young Geddy's vocals are at first,, still jarring, the musicianship is impressive. I own Rush's greatest hits, introduced my son to them as the inspiration of Coheed and Cambria and appreciate Geddy's turn with the MacKenzie Brothers and Alex appearance on Trailer Park Boys. I was watching a documentary on their farewell tour which led me here to 40 minutes of my youth. Mind blowing and unexpected. Thank you Rush and yes I did applaud that night because anyone who puts themselves out there with honest effort deserves our appreciation. I still go out and support live music, you never know what you might find even 41 years later.

Go figure, yox465 we were under the same roof at the same time as I was at this show also..I was left picking my jaw up off the ground. I quickly got in tune with Geddy's vocals, but it was the musicianship that really floored me. Having said that what a 3-band lineup though eh. Montrose (post Sammy H) and the boogie rock of Foghat who put on a great show as well. Memories...good ones!

I was born too late, missed all these classic shows. Glad I saw Rush in 1992 and 2004 though. But if I was a teenager in 1976, I would have been climbing the walls at this concert.
I think the most impressive thing about this performance is that Geddy Lee is wearing heels the entire time.
Can't believe I'm seeing this in 2020. "2112" is one of the greatest rock songs ever made.
I got to see the 2112 tour at the Auditorium theater in Chgo. Unbelievable and probably the last tour they ever played the entire 2112 side of the "album".

@@dez3332 actually, the Test Fo Echo tour featured the ENTIRE album side, which for the first time included the Discovery and Oracle parts. It was amazing, and I was lucky enough to be at the show where they recorded it for the Different Stages live album. Check it out!

I've always loved how Bastille Day sounded at that time ... Rush in its purest, wild and hard rock state.

COOL! I loved the 70's! I saw Rush - had to be before this because 2112 wasn't out yet - in INDY for the 'Christmas Concert' - about 5 bands. Blue Oyster Cult was headliner, but RUSH got delayed for some reason, and CULT had to come out before them. By the time RUSH came on, everyone was almost burned out and RUSH didn't sound too good that night either, honestly. Probably due to the logistical problem or whatever it was. They were always great when I saw them after that - 30 more years or so, haha!

Rush the most professional band ever. Was turned on to them in 1976 and they stayed my favorite band forever, with Alex, Geddy, and Neil who could ask for more. These 3 guy's were the best 3 piece band ever and were absolute consummate pro's. They will be dearly missed.

This was my first concert . I was 12 . They were the opening act for Kansas. 2 of they great rock drummers ever in one night . It was a life changing experience. R.I.P Neil

My God, this is an absolutely breathtaking, almost unbelievable performance - especially Geddy's vocals. One of VERY few singers who actually sang better onstage than in the studio. I'm so glad we can go back and hear him sing while in his prime.

I never got to see Alex with long hair. Damn! This sounds so good. I saw them 22 times -- starting with Grace Under Pressure Tour to R40. But watching this, I really wish I had experienced some of this live classic Rush. 2112 Grand Finale had me in tears.

Welcome to the discovery of something truly great! I was 13, this was my first album (Live, "All the World's a Stage"). Wow! Saw them four times, that still wasn't enough. Check out all you can from them. Their DVD Rush in Rio from 2003 (I think) is a good one. Any of their earlier performances is magical IMO... Geddy's vocal range was higher back then. But it's all very special. I think this is recorded in Camden, NJ.

Imagine seeing Rush for the first time at this concert. Sure, they are a bit rough on the edges compared to how they played in a few years. But then you hear Geddy tell you "we want to play a song off our new album. This is called 2112". Then they proceed to blow everyone away with a 20-minute behemoth, face-melting shredding by Alex, and Neil drumming like a technical beast!
Don't have to imagine it, Christmas concert,'76. Rush headlined with Bob Seagar and ARS.

Unfortunately they only played the full 2112 song live during one tour. I believe during the Test for Echo tour. And yes I was very lucky to experience it several times during that tour.
I'm sure this will be controversial, but I feel this is when Rush peaked. They were young, raw, energetic, powerful and fearless!

The guys just off stage watching this are thinking “omfg we have to follow them!” This is around the time I started listening to Rush, after release of 2112 Album. Incredible talent by all three of them! RIP Neil, thanks for the music and sharing your amazing talent with the world!
Jeff- me also! I was like 7 years old then. And my parents got me my first stereo of my own with an 8track player. And at that time I started to form my own taste in music. And the 3 bands that I first liked was the Beatles and kiss and rush!!!!! Fly by night was the first 8track of my own that I ever had. I remember that! And I was just blown away by rush! Especially Neil!!!! This was all before I even understood music at all. But obviously I had an ear towards legendary music!
I saw this set in Okla City. They opened for Ted Nugent. Next year they headlined Fairwell to Kings tour with April Wine opening !! Great shows !!
They were opening for Kiss alot in '76. I'm sure it went off well lol. Miss you so much already Neil. RIP
This too was when I discovered Rush. I was blown away. Instant addict. Even in 1976 Neil just roasted the rest in the day. Damn he was good 😉
when i saw this tour in Springfield, MA it was BÖC & Foghat...all for $6.50 🙂
To hear Geddy sing this stuff sharp just kills me. It's unhuman.

Just gotta work on that cold weather. I'm too old for the cold. I can't tolerate it. If they had a region with an average temp of 85c and they would grant me citizenship I'd be taking off to the Great White North in a heartbeat, eh?
Drumming is like sledgehammers, vocals so strong and Alex’s guitar playing is outstanding. Pure class, a band unlikely ever to be repeated.
I first saw Rush at the Wilfred Laurier University auditorium when they were touring their second album and numerous times at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. To the best of my recollection I favored their performances during the seventy's when they still played the smaller venues. Neil Peart would shake the foundations of the building and there was something magical about the raw interaction between Alex's guitar and Geddy's bass before the band became more dependent on loops and synth's. Older or later these guy's were amazing and had the ability to deliver the goods. It's just that I have a taste for less refined music. It has been a pleasure to experience their musical careers from start to finish. The music of my youth. Thank you and God bless.

They were ALL thrilled...Alex and Geddy (RUSH) had a recording contract before Neil got there, and they hired him!

This show was two days after I was born. Rush is the greatest band, ever! I've loved their amazing music since I was a little kid, hearing Subdivisions blasting in my uncle's Datsun pick-up. Long live Alex, Geddy and Neil, three guys that have inspired me with music my entire life!
Much of the audience had never heard anything like this before. This was the beginning of Progressive Metal.

This concert is just insane! The tempo these songs were played vs modern versions is no comparison imo.
they're so tight. Playing to a crowd of, like, 300... they're still awesome. Good stuff Maynard.
I don't think Alex gets the credit he deserves. He is a very talented guitar player!!!! One of the best. So he didn't fret board tap. Who cares!!! One of my favorite guitar players who plays for the song and doesn't show boat. Gets to the point and makes you really feel what he's playing.
His imagination and feel is what I always thought made him one of the very best!
He did fretboard tap later on the song YYZ and did a great job of it. He didn't need to do that, but had the talent
He's modest, and says he was just trying to keep up. I remember trying to work out some of his guitar parts, and kept wondering where he was getting these chords from, that just sounded so perfect in that context. Not until EVH, IMHO, did any but Les Paul and Steve Howe exceed him in popular music - and they didn't rock near as hard. In Metallica's second through the forth albums, I felt like I was hearing a faster version Alex Lifeson doing the soloing (until Bob Rock got ahold of Hammet).
What is “ Fret board tapping? I like the guitar solo in Afterimage from Grace Under Pressure that’s a great example of Alex’s creativity.
@@analogkid4957 eddy van halen is one of the most popular examples of finger tapping. Basically, just using both hands on the fretboard using hammer and pull offs without picking in between to expand the note range on one string at one time
I have watched this many times and am still blown away at the musicianship of these three guys who barely more than 20. That audience must have been blown away. What a band!

was at this show. first time I saw rush. 3000 seat theatre. the sound just exploded thru every part of the body. absolutely stunning show. my ears were ringing for days. great to see it on youtube. remember it like it was yesterday.

I was at this concert & waited with my friends in the cold for them to come out of the side door of the Capitol! Finally came out & we got to see them & off they went in there bus. Was & will always be my favorite band!
Can you imagine the COURAGE it took to take their artistic image to the stage...

It took a lot of courage for Geddy to get on the stage in front of thousands of people and attempt to sing. He is terrible.
dreams only get wings when you work them. I will Die loving Rush, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, BillyThorpe, and so many others that made me alive. Dream on youngsters.
Finally, after all these years, I get to see Rush "live". It's never too late to experience greatness.
The greatest trio to ever enter a studio or grace a stage. Long live RUSH.
I saw Rush live right around this time circa 1976. I remember thinking Neil Peart was God on drums and that these dudes must be from another plant cuz no human could play music like this! Rush is definitely one of the best bands ever.

One of the few drummers on the planet that you can hear and know immediately the name behind the thunder ... a teacher, a music genius, a legendary drummer ... I agree with others a god among drummers.

It is terrible what time does to all of us. They were soooooo young. Geddy has aged the best of the three. It is interesting to note that Geddy sang this way until Permanent Waves, where he credits voice lessons to Daisy. In Permanent Waves, there is a section in the song Free Will where he lets loose. After that...and to this day, he has toned it down. I still think he could crank it if he wanted to because his voice is naturally high pitched. The early material will ALWAYS be my favorite. It was raw and Geddy had that great voice.
