@@leonardyardley771 2112 my favourite album by rush the more hear it the more I like. It was a bit before my time but I still discovered it probably by being Canadian and living in Ontario for a bit. Kids today are missing out that’s why I like to share stuff like this with younger people who don’t know it. Kinda how I got into it actually. But your comment is spot on my friend
RIP Neil. You're a genius, a legend, and the standard I have measured every drummer against for the past 40 years. "Suddenly, you were gone . From all the lives you left your mark upon".
My brother and I used to talk about an animated version for this song 35 years ago. My brother saw the priest jumping off the bench and smashing the guitar.
My 19 year old son who is a pre professional ballet dancer was listening to 2112 when I came in from a walk. He was working out choreography to it. He said, “someday I’m going to create a ballet around this. It’s perfect for a ballet!”
Neil Peart was more than just the greatest drummer. He was a poet, lyricist, author, traveler, and philosopher who was kind enough to share his stories with us all.
I don't know why, but I don't think most people have noticed Alex Lifesons use of the wah pedal in this song. He used it heavily to make a lot of white noise during his solo to represent the guitar being smashed into pieces by the priests.
"this is majestic" words from a dream theater member while sitting outside a rush concert listening to rush. and thus began the bands first name Majesty...
Imagine how lucky we are that Geddy and Alex brought Neil into the fold. Three amazing artists in their own right and together they give us works like this. RIP Neil, you live on through the art you created and left in our care.
The truth is they had no idea that Neil had such astounding lyrics writings skills. Actually Neil didn’t either. He was just auditioning to be a drummer. He got the job, then blew them away with his mind blowing lyrical skills. An incredibly coincidental, or blessed set of circumstances.
i just love how it is the younger Rush (circa 1976) who "left our planets long ago" and then it is the older Rush who are the ones who "assume control"! Absolute perfection!
And I just love how they preserved the feedback on the final note. I've been listening to this album since it was on vinyl, and that's how its supposed to end!
An epic about defiance in the face of totalitarianism. A love letter to all of rock. Arguably one of the greatest songs ever written. RIP, Neil. I still can't believe you're gone, even 4 years later.
2112 was written to combat the record company that was trying to control them. The priests are the record company. When you understand their back story it makes this epic album even more brilliant. They would not be controlled. They could not be controlled. Thank you RUSH for standing up to them and giving us what we needed; the beauty of music in its purest form.
When my son was in high school he started listening to rap and one night we were alone and I asked him if he wanted to hear some real base I put rush in my stero and he was never the same .
Whovian1029 In reality its a bit pointless to care if people like him or not, but when i see certain players being mentioned all the time i cant help but think of players like Alex. In every top list theres always Slash etc. Alex destroys most of them!
I was once woke up at 2 am, everything was quiet all around. For some reason I couldn't sleep. Decided to listen some prog, I plugged my headphones and played the new album I bought , titled "2112. " This was the night I listened to Rush for the very first time. The encounter was so epic that even after I finished the album, I could feel chills just by thinking of the music. I don't have enough words to describe this beauty, no one has.
I was 13 in 1976, I heard bits of this album from a friends brother and soon spent some hard earned mowing cash and bought the album. Many, many, many nights I sat in a chair next to the stereo in my folks living room at night, all lights off, headphones on, looking out the window at distant slowly blinking red lights from broadcast towers, and played this music as loud as my sanity would allow. I know (knew) every note, every lick, every strike of Neal Peart's sticks to the point of distraction in the real world as I replayed side A in my mind. I did the same with many albums (Kiss-Detroit Rock City, Styx-Equinox, Steve Miller) but 2112 was the leader by far. I ache for that time.
Similiar memories, but early 80s discovering Rush, ELP and Yes. And no bong, I wouldnt dare at 13 in the living room, but bet your ass I walked the dog and blazed up before I got set up in the living room.
Me too:( miss the past. This was my favorite album, also, along with "The Song Remains the Same" Love your description of the" blinking red lights" from the broadcast towers.

I remember being stoned out of my mind and listening to 2112. The 1st Rush album I ever bought. Afterwards I wondered why. May Neil Peart rest in peace. One of the best drummers ever if not the best.
I'm an airline flight instructor. I have my simulator students squawk 2112 as a transponder code. Very few get it but occasionally someone shouts Rush! Greatest album of all time. I had this on 8 track in my first POS car... 1979 Pioneer super tuner under the dash. It doesn't get better than Rush! Old Rush!
Oh man !!! The Super Tuner !! Forgot about that unit. I had one also. That was a great time and we had no idea just how dense the quality of media/music was as we lived it. Bring back the musician.... and the 8 track ClaChunk lol
Brad Martin sorry to correct you but in the song’s story, The Solar Federation are the evil guys. The good guys (which Neil Peart should be a part of) are the Elder Race of Men.
I’ll tell you what I’m 26 years old. My dad introduced me to rush and this has always been one of my favorites. People are blown away that I even know this but good music is good music. Hey thanks for showing this, my older brother explained this album to me years ago and with the video you've shown it's exactly what he told me. Understand he went to the concert but this was back in the day before he would this video was out.
Rush: the only band I can think of whose relevance and appreciation has remained so strong that a comic is adopted as 2112's music video FORTY YEARS after it was released.
Every time I go back to listen to this masterpiece, I think of how we're slowly getting closer to the dystopia being described. Yet I retain hope that things will work out.
I always felt like Rush's music deserves some sort of movie such as Pink Floyd's the wall. This gave 2112 an illustration very nice. Farewell to a King RIP Neil
Ever since I first heard this song, I've wanted to make a mini movie of it. It would be such an amazing movie dude, it's already all set up and everything
I wish i could go to a Rush concert. I grew up to my grandparents listening to them and it just amaze me the talent is amazing. Geddy Lee was my fave. He’s got the most beautiful pristine tone without even trying.
Personally, I preferred it more without it. I guess I like music better without or at least with minimal visual accompaniment (in terms of the lyrics, not concerts, music videos, etc.) Still, you can't deny that it's an awesome video.
Turtleturd I wouldn't really call it metal but I think I know what you mean I used to go to a school where I was also one of 5 where this girl named ebby and me would argue over if guns and roses was good with they are but she prefers AC/DC and Metallica I'm not even sher if she knows who rush is but I wish I had stayed at school there to tell her
Well, this is true for me as well, but I find peace in the fact that there is a different 2112 hidden in the song. At the very end, the message from the Elder Race of Man: Attention, all planets of the Solar Federation. Attention, all planets of the Solar Federation. Attention, all planets of the Solar Federation. We have assumed control. We have assumed control. We have assumed control. The first sentence has 7 words. The second different sentence has 4 words. Both sentences are repeated 3 times. 7x3=21 4x3=12 2112.

I don't care what anybody says. This is still the absolute heaviest thing I've ever heard, especially the first six and a half minutes. See, it isn't always about how fast or how loud you play. In fact, it really comes down to attitude. In this case, Rush were angry with how they were being told to be more "radio-friendly" and they said "absolutely not!" and made this masterpiece. The anger shows through, and that's why it's heavy.
I think I was about 12 years old, around 1981, and used to love mooching around in some woodland behind some houses nearby where I grew up. One day there was an old chest of drawers, obviously thrown out into the woods by one of the homeowners. I rifled through the drawers, they were all empty, but in one I found a Philips c90 cassette tape. Curiously, I took it home and played it on my tape player and it was a recording of this album. That was when my life changed and I became a Rush fan. I listened to that tape most nights, through my headphones, in bed, it was mind blowing. Like nothing else I had ever heard. Thank you Rush, for providing a soundtrack to my life and thank you to the guy who illustrated this, it’s fabulous.
I started my Rush journey with a well used cassette of A Farewell to Kings, didn't even have the case. I still have it somewhere in a closet, along with all my Rush records.
Anyone catch the images of Alex, Geddy and Neil during the video? Notice how early on when the video talks about the elder race of man left Earth (15:25) that it was young versions of the three, and then at the end they come back as older (20:00)to take back the planet from the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx. Nice trick by the Illustrator/Animator of this video.
It's oddly happening. I have been hearing the song "Twilight Zone" in my head that last few days. I guess my subconscious pulled it up as it relates to towns being empty with the covid-19 lockdown. That made me want to come to listen to all of the lyrics again with a new way of looking at them, wondering what else they may have "foreseen". First I noticed a Mandella Effect. No one played this album more back in the day, just saying and In Temples of Syrinx its " Father and Son" not common sons. Also, the oracle was a SHE, not he. Anyway, there is a "Galactic Federation" that is a negative ET bloodline posing as good, trying to take over control from another not so good ET bloodline and that is what this whole shut down is about as was the creation of Trumps Space Force. Take note that they even copied the logo symbol from the Federations in Star Trek. They are fighting up there and a lot is happening behind the scenes. They want AI to take over and the vaccine has synthetic DNA , patented voice to skull tech, that with 5G will give total mind control of all humans. The computers in the walls and temples ( our bodies) is 5 and 6 G nanotech. Humans will become good little worker biological slaves run by the AI computer and sold as such and no one will be the wiser. All human creativity will be snuffed out as the right brain will be shut down and inaccessible. AI is the only thing allowed to create music or art and it will suck as if you haven't noticed, it is already putting out much of today's garbage. And, a group called Annonymous as you all know, just called out Bill Gates and his vaccine and they called out Trump in the past. Anonymous has been calling out the whole Federation take over. Look at the album and who wrote the story of 2112. Its says - Annonymous You can't make this shit up. It's happening.

Me too. Never so much got a tiny bit watery eyed from a celebrity or artist until I woke up that morning. Greatest song ever written. Greatest band ever. Period.
Saw them play this at the Paladium in New York. It was the most incredible concert I have ever seen and I have seen over 300 bands starting back in the 60s
Imagine in 92 years I imagine this will be getting a resurgence of airplay or whatever it is then. Of course I will not stop listening to Rush until my last breath.
I love the solo in Presentation. It always sounded to me like the guitar crying and yelling while it's being destroyed, thrown to the fire, or being mutilated. 2112 is life.
This is nothing short of amazing. The whole album should be produced in this manner. More albums should, as well. When I think of just how much creativity in general -- and Sci-Fi in particular -- were embraced in my youth ('70s-'80s), and just how little is left of both now, cast aside in favor of digital media and social networks, I feel like crying.
You sound like you are a perfect fit for the "elder race of man". Music, art, imagination, all which was taken away by the priests of the new society. Don't listen to Soliloquy when you get too down! We want you to keep your lifeblood!
Kirk Dennis The sleep is still in my eyes the dream is still in my head. I think they were warning us back then preparing us for what is coming. What is now. I love how the ending is still ambiguous enough that you can't tell if the main character succeeded in killing himself and the return of the Elder Race is just his dying dream / afterlife, or if they actually returned right when he was about to.
I was just praying morning prayers and so tired of all the music that gets played a million times over and I'm depressed, drinking coffee and this song came on ! If you love this, go to Fly By Night next. I was so lucky. Back in the 70's there used to be a record store called Licorice Pizza, and they would open and play any new album you brought up to the counter. So we took fulI advantage of that policy. I brought 2112 up to the counter and the guy said I could have it if I would just leave! So I did! I was so pissed because they refused to play any of it on the radio. I used to call in and request Lessons and Something For Nothing. They never played any of it. Or anything off Fly By Night. I'm so happy they were finally recognized.

Yes R.I.P. Neil. Probably one of the top three percussionists in music history.
Yes.
Perfectly stated!
This is the first album I listened to front to back without skipping a song. This is a true masterpiece.
Privileged to see Rush open their gig with this classic many many years ago and I was literally 15 feet away from Geddy . Memorable
I think that there's a lot of dynamics, very different from heavy metal productions of the same or later times. A lot of subtle notes and softness.
That’s an awesome story. And thanks to the people who dumped that dresser !

Yes! Thanks for pointing out.
Yes, ready to save the future AND the past!

RIP Mr. Peart. One of the best drummers ever. ( also love Mr Carey)
Rachelle Meredith Danny Carey from Tool?
our great computers fill the hallowed halls
Whenever I hear this, I weep for the state of music today. Nothing can come close to this.
Crown Lands are trying.
Remember when our parents would say "Your music stinks, ours was way better." Now I'm saying the same thing to my nephews. Today's music sucks balls. The classics never get old.
"Heroes get remembered but legends never die!"💔
Rest in Beats Neil Peart 🥁
Neil is both
Legends are remembered, too.
I know you cant pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend but.....this is the only time I've ever cried like a baby when someone I have never met died. Felt a connection to this man through his life experience and his profound poetry. A kindred soul who I miss though we have never met. Enjoy your long ride Professor while you shout "bring that horizon to me!"
Same here!...
I would never be tired to listen to this absolute MASTERPIECE of progressive and rock music!!!Hats down!
And how clever to play as a beginner would in Discovery. The solo in Soliloquy cries out in anguish and helplessness also. Kudos to Lifeson.
The best declaration of independence from the top 40 record producers in history.
I still can’t comprehend how a three man band could be so awesome 🤩? I’m in my 60’s and I’m still rocking to RUSH!!!!!
bad taste taken into old age
This is nothing short of amazing.
The whole album should be produced in this manner. More albums should, as well.
When I think of just how much creativity in general -- and Sci-Fi in particular -- were embraced in my youth ('70s-'80s), and just how little is left of both now, cast aside in favor of digital media and social networks, I feel like crying.
You sound like you are a perfect fit for the "elder race of man". Music, art, imagination, all which was taken away by the priests of the new society. Don't listen to Soliloquy when you get too down! We want you to keep your lifeblood!
wingsandash don't loose all hope, I've just discovered Rush at 16 and am immediately in love
Kirk Dennis
The sleep is still in my eyes the dream is still in my head. I think they were warning us back then preparing us for what is coming. What is now. I heave a sigh and sadly smiled and lie a while in bed. I wish that it might come to pass not fade like all my dreams. Just think of what our lives may be in world like I have seen.
wingsandash nice
gotta say, i love the Pink Floyd reference on the chalkboard at 15:15, love to see my two favorite bands acknowledge each other
I love how the ending is still ambiguous enough that you can't tell if the main character succeeded in killing himself and the return of the Elder Race is just his dying dream / afterlife, or if they actually returned right when he was about to.
Jimi the Schmuck I like to think he did kill himself but his death caused the people to rise up against the priests and bring the ancient people back.
I was just praying morning prayers and so tired of all the music that gets played a million times over and I'm depressed, drinking coffee and this song came on
! I've never heard it before it was on loud and someone walking by looked over and I'm in a better mood now and this song was so great. I love Rush but I've never heard this song! They were a super great band.❤
“BY GOD THERE IS NO BETTER DRUMMER THAN NEIL PEART!!!!!!!”
Technically...... NOPE!
i mean he was brilliant, but not the best.
@@mrslinkydragon9910 And that's your opinion.
@@heyscrewyouhippies7742 and thats your opinion to disagree with me, which i respect
*snorts line of cheeto dust*
This is an amazingly illustrated video of Rush's epic song suite.
A thousand thanks to whoever is responsible for creating it!
I've drawn my entire adult life, just brilliant work. Love it.
The illustrations are moving pictures.
Friends have recently introduced to Rush... I think I'm in love
Holty The styracosaurus there isn't any thing better then these guys man
Tu viens de faire une fabuleuse découverte!
Holty The styracosaurus Welcome! Glad you found love and appreciation for what is the gloriousness of Rush's music. Rock on!
You have good friends
This is by far my favorite Rush song, Alex is one hell of a guitar player
Listening in honor of master Neil. He deserves !!! Rest in peace, your legacy remains firm !!!!!
I still remember my dad and I, flying at 80mph down a dirt road, BLASTING this out his stereo!
Scotchman That’s pretty awesome you and your dad digging Rush together! I remember taking my kids to a Rush concert! One beautiful experience!
Good times.
@Chris B My kids at 12; TURN THAT DOWN!!! My kids at 21; TURN THAT UP!!!!!
I thought its Red Barchetta
"We have assumed control". Along with "The Sleep is still in my eyes" What a fantastic album after all these years. It was one of favorites my back then it betters with time!
Soliloquy gets me every time. It’s like an out of body experience
I know dude it captures the despairing feeling so well
"Sadder still to watch it die than never to have know it."
Yeah this and a lot of others give me that same experience
I always thought they could make movie based on this story. A rock opera.
stockjonebills same
Totally and there’s enough music by them to fill an entire film not just from this one song/album
Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock actually had this implemented as a crucial story point!
It had a part in the novel ready player one
@Jack Burton Not a ripoff, Peart gave credit to Rand for the influence for 2112.
As a young kid in the 70's my older brother was my gateway to music. I remember how much different kinds of music he listened to, but he always put 2112 at the top of his stereo so I could listen to it when he wasn't home. one of the best albums I ever heard.!
RIP Neil Peart! May his legacy live on!
When did I first hear 2112? I was working as a housekeeper at a hospital and I was pretty lousy at it...I cleaned the labs, and the researchers were listened to this album, and I loved it. Coolest dudes ever...29 years ago seems like yesterday, man...good times
Happy 45th anniversary to one of the greatest progressive rock albums ever made.
12:58-13:54 is one of the greatest pieces of music of all time, that transition to the solo is so seamless and absolutely perfect. The solo kicks ass too
Cried when I heard Neil had died. I had been playing Moving Pictures all week in ignorance. never got to tell him how he sound-tracked so many important and poignant moments in my life. First heard 2112 through ear goggles in a darkened room from start to finish. First time was awesome. Still brilliant 36 years later... Thanks, Mr Peart. Thanks, Rush.
Listening to this in memory of Neil. A loss for not just Canadian music, but for the entire world of music.
The guitarest alex is incredable so simple yet creative ,as me being a lead guitarest i can see every note on the neck and its so inspiring hearing 19:47 it all put together. The leads fall into place so naturaly. By listening so hard you can easily be taken on a journey and it takes over your subconsious. And leaves you miles away. The use of the wah fits so perfectally . I love the ride it takes me on. I only wish i was that skilled. I would never stop playing. I would dive into and become the music . The vocals are so incredable this was truly the best work rush has ever done or ever will be done by rush.
lifeson's solo in soliloquy makes me cry every time I listen. best solo of all time imo. there are far more technical solos out there, but the pure emotion that comes from it is amazing
The first time I saw Rush was in stockton california they opened 4 montrose dudes killed it!!! They played "2112" live blew my socks off!!! Rush fan 4 a long time! R.i.p. " the professor"🌹🌹🎸🎸🇨🇦
The acoustic guitar that is playing when it is found always gives me goosebumps. Bless music. Bitch'n artwork as well. Thank you. May we all find the rhythm and flow.
I've been listening to these guys for decades, seen them at least 2 dozen times...and was never ever slightly disappointed in what they sold me.... They are truly the best...RIP Neil, there are few in my life who inspired me like you
Rest in Peace, Neil. Let the Spirit of Music carry you home.
