    Neil Peart - Drums
    Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

He is a high tenor, just like James LaBrie, Claudio Sanchez and maybe Robert Plant, very thin vocal folds, therefore very delicate, that's why if you smoke or abuse the voice in anyway without resting it they tend to lose the control over the natural extra flexibility in it, like Geddy and James apparently did.

@@ehsbe1056 Geddy Lee's vocals were very remarkable in Rush's early days, particularly the Fly By Night album. A lot of other musicians back then used to diss his voice, but I always retorted, "Really? cuz I think he's great." Ged's vocals definitely had us all talking about it.
This version of "Anthem" isn't too bad- much better than any other live version I've heard. But the album cut was f***ing unbelievable, both vocal-wise and instrument-wise. I still remember my eyes bugging out and my mouth gaping open when I first heard it.

Here in South Texas, during the earlier 1970s, I guess that many Rock acts passed us up because of the amount of money that they could make in bigger venues. But from about 1972 or so, a DJ named Joe Anthony started a Heavy Metal/Hard Rock station on an AM station, KMAC-AM, which was a Farm and Ranch station out of San Antonio. At noon, the Agricultural Price Report would come on and then at 12:30, after the Hog Prices, all of a sudden the best blistering Hard Rock and Heavy Metal of those days would start, with Joe Anthony as the first DJ and then later on Lou Roney would finish up the evening. Later, Joe Anthony started KISS-FM. But this man LOVED this type of music and started Stone City Attractions, with a business partner, and started bringing the Rock groups to South Texas. The Canadian bands were VERY receptive. Moxy, Rush, Triumph, Frank Morino and Mahogany Rush and others, came down from the North. But RUSH and Joe Anthony had a GREAT relationship. The three members of Rush called Joe Anthony the FOURTH MEMBER of Rush. Thanks to Joe Anthony, Rush came to San Antonio and then down to our area, numerous times during the second half of the '70s. I was able to see many Rush concerts during the time that they were one KICKASS Rock band. They were HIGH ENERGY back then. Those were the days when the Rush albums proudly stated that "NO SYNTHESIZERS WERE USED". Geddy Lee and Geezer Butler are STILL my favourite Bass Masters of the '70s. Damn, I bet Geddy, Alex and Neal got some overwhelming CONTACT HIGHS when they played here! Joe Anthony became known as 'THE GODFATHER OF ROCK in San Antonio and South Texas and passed away several years ago at an early age. I never met him, but because of this man's love for Heavy Metal and Hard Rock music, l(and many others)was able to see many great groups, guitarists, bass players and drummer's during Rock's greatest decade, the '70s.

Imagine hearing this for the first time in 1974... These three guys were just SO FAR ahead of their time; and of course Mr. Peart was the driving force and heart beat of this band. His work really is the pinnacle of Rock/Hard Rock percussion, not to mention the basis of virtually all heavy metal style percussion. One way or another Neil influenced generations of percussionists either directly or indirectly. The world suffered an immense loss with the passing of Neil Peart, but he left us an immense body of work to enjoy forever- as well as to be studied by the up-and-coming.

The pacing, interplay, timing and “all being on the same page (STAGE!)” were on display early on! This was apparent to me with my first exposure being All the World’s a Stage (sic?), the live album recommended to me in 1976(?) by a high school classmate who loved music and later became a DJ, but who was not himself a fan of RUSH. I was captivated by the drumming, the passion of the only three players, and the “forward” presentation which resonated with my also being on the outside of mass acceptance.
My belief is that RUSH spoke to many tens of thousands of souls who found their validated voice in the lyrics and drive of this truly terrific trio!!

I think I was at this show or one close to it, it may have been '77 All the worlds a stage tour, I Believe. What I do remember was being there, and that damn every rock type drummer professional or not was down front near the stage playing air drums right along with Neil. it was F-kening amazing to see, it was the first time I've ever seen that many obvious drummers ulike that ,doing that. I Loved Rush, ever since 1975 when a good high school friend Frank L. not only turned me on to Rush but Frank Zappa, as well,of whom I was lucky enough to have seen twice thanks to my Bass playing Reichnbacher, friend Frank L. forever grateful ,Man. I played drums and guitar and with all that said, Sing on dude, Play on drummer !!

How can you focus on the shoes while he's molesting a gorgeous Rickenbacker that's as tall as he is? I have a soft spot in my heart and a hard spot in my pants for Rickenbacker 4001.

Years ago...about 1984...we were working at Mid West Pipe Coating in Schererville,Indiana. Our boss at the time let us listen to my jam box as long as we kept it hidden from the upper brass as we called them.As it was so noisey in that building....unless you were right next to radio.....you couldnt hear anything but the large ovens.I worked as the coating inspector......checking thickness of coatings on the finished product. So this line they called Customs.So....a song came on by Triumph....Lay It On The Line.....This one know it all kid says....man Rush is the best for a three piece outfit,I immeadiately said ......That isn't Rush.......The kid looks at me and laughs....wanna bet....Sure i said..we decided on a hundred dollar bill...your on.The other guys around us just smiled and said.....who cares who the band is.Well....i won the bet and had to bring in my 8-track tape of Triumph in just to prove my point. The bet was in June and it took a few months to finally get my money.

Saw them just a week before this show. Denver Auditorium Arena, opening up for Ted Nugent. I had been hip to 2112 for about three months prior, and I kept telling everyone how good they were. Tore it up that night!

I'm biased because Rush is my absolute favorite band, but this is just on another level. The power, the vocals, the drums, Alex's guitar....I don't have the words to describe how amazing it all is.
