- Today I want to show you how to prepare a traditional Cantonese dessert which is called red bean soup 红豆沙.
Red bean soup is in the category of Cantonese desserts called tong sui (糖水), literally means sugar water. It is a popular item on the menu of most Chinese dessert houses in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. The red bean soup is also regularly included in the Chinese banquet package as the concluding dish to wrap up a meal.

Thank you. I must try making it.

Yes. Bro tq.
thank you sir great video :)
Thks I will try
Thanks KP for my childhood dessert with a twist!
You are welcome,. (Nostalgic indeed).
My mom adds ginger and it’s amazing
Thanks for the tips. Never though of mashing it up to make it looks thicker. Cooked this in the 60s and was told by my later mother to place a porcelain spoon in the pot to mash the beans while cooking. You mentioned 3 ingredients in the beginning. It should be 4 at least - you need water as well. Also in my old days, we add some rice to the pot from the start to have the dessert looks thicker too. Adding coconut cream is always my favorite but unfortunately this is bad for high cholesterol.
Thank you for the detailed recipe.
Thanks for watching and hope you will enjoy the red bean soup.
喜欢红豆。。谢谢老师分享❤️😁
Good looks tasty
Good presentation.
Very detailed recipe. I will try it one day. Thank you KP.
You're welcome
Thx for your detailed recipe 😊
You're welcome 😊
I'm making this dessert right now and i found your video,..thanks...😊🙏
Thanks for referring to my recipe. Have a great time.
Thank you,..it's very delicious and warm in winter...
Queen!
I followed your instruction and the soup turned out really nice and creamy. Only I didn't scrap the tangerine. I felt it was a waste of my very old tangerine peels. The bitterness is not noticeable, or at least, it suited my taste buds. Thank you once again.
Thank you for the tutorial. I tried to cook the same way without the citric skin. I put a little bit of corn starch to make it thicker. It is yummy.
You can also add sagu (sago)
that's the trick, put in starch to make it into a glue starch. 🥰🥰
I miss red bean soup! Really want to make this one day! Maybe I can because of the current situation with the world right now
Stay at home and make your red bean soup.
Did you do it?
Good job
My mom used to make this sweet soup, but using mung beans. Tangerine peels were perhaps 1 year old.
Brilliant idea to freeze the red beans overnight. I have a problem boiling the beans for so long, still can't turn soft. Thank you.
Also, only add sugar last minute. It is hard to turn soft if you add sugar during the early stages.
Soak overnight (before bedtime) next morning you are ready to cook. Easy and less cooking time.
this soup reminded me of my childhood,, although my mother do not add tangerine peel,,,,hoping more of ur recipes. thanks a lot.......
You are welcome. My mother in law used to make it. Lots of nostalgic memories.
GOOD
❤
It's too enjoyable as a meal so its reference of being a dessert is on the menu.
✌️
I've never seen any beans that have sugar.
In USA, we eat great northern, navy, pinto, etc. We usually serve with a cut-up mild onion, & a big piece of cornbread.
Always savory. I may try this recipe. Have a nice weekend. 👍👍👍
Thanks. It's also call Azuki beans (Japanese word). Hope you are able to get it from the grocery store.
You can find it on the menu in Chinese restaurants if you have any in the area you live in. This is more of a dessert item
Legend has it that if you spill and waste read bean soup, a rubber-man and a green-haired swordsman will rip you apart.
I make this in UK occasionally ; I soak beans overnight, and use brown sugar, sugar that comes in small bars from Chinese super markets.
Tangerine peels are home dried and
Saved after eating the fruit.
Yeah, it is hard to get tangerine peels.
Either, you can put an orange, cook about an hour, take it out, just for flovour.. When the beans is totally break, add sugarcane-sugar cubes, more aroma, then sagu (sago)..
if tong sui is too sweet how to save it without adding more liquid?
Can u explain use high heat or low heat when boiled it for 1 hour?? And lastly 20 minutes using low heat or medium heat?
I use low to medium heat throughout. There is a blog post for this video with more information. You can check it out here tasteasianfood.com/red-bean-soup/
What is the sweetest bean?
Hi, I dont have any rock sugar but I do have brown sugar, how much would you recommend to use?
You csn use brown sugar, same quantity.
how come the beans ive been boiling for 2hrs but still hard :-/ i soaked them in water overnight but did not freeze...
one piece brought me hereee!!
Is sago tapioka or real sagu? Thank you.
If there are no pandan leaves, can you substitute the green part of the leek?
Pandan leaves have a unique flavor and cannot be substituted. You can omit if it is not available.
big mon brought me here
What if we don't get dry tangerine peels in my city? Any alternative?
There is no substitute for it. Fortunately, you can omit it, and it will still be tasty.

Can we use maltose in place of rock sugar?
I suggest using regular white sugar instead.
big mom went crazy on this so iam gonna make this and gonna it to big mom in exchange of zeus and poromateus
I’ve bean soaking my beens for TREE hours and they still hard as wood. I believe I failed miseral-bean.
Try using a pressure cooker? It's the easiest way to soften the red beans
They should add Queen from one piece in the thumbnail
Is there a substitute for Pandan Leaves?
Unfortunately, there isn't. Just like vanilla, you can't substitute it with something else. However, you can use good quality pandan leaves extract. If you can't get it, please omit it. It will not make a huge difference.
@@TasteofAsianFood Thanks, good to know.
@@TasteofAsianFood
I've seen many recipes call for pandan leaves. I'd really like to know what they taste like.
😁
@@tciesla it's screwpine leaves.. but i think it's ok if u don't ve any.. don't buy the syrup.. it will make the taste weird..
May I know why my red bean soup is bitter after boiling?
It never happened to me before. I will update and mention this problem in my recipe if I know the reason.
Discard the water after the 1st and 2nd boil. Only then can you rid off the bitterness. This was taught by the Japanese while making azuki bean paste,
Hello may I know where are you from
Malaysia
How come my red bean alway got bitter teast.
Im from one peice
How come my red beans doesn't get soft after cooking for long time?
Many reasons. One of them is adding sugar too early. Always add sugar when it's nearly done.
Soak the beans overnight, forget about freezing or 3 hrs soak.
One piece new ep brought me here who else?
This is jackie chans favourite
Can I skip dried tangerine peels?
You can skip it. It is not a must, but it does enhance the flavor.
@@TasteofAsianFood thank you
Are red beans the same as kidney beans?
Red beans are smaller than kidney beans and are round.
I skipped the mash bean part
Big mom😂😂😂😂
Because of one piece
Can you tell me please if the 'red beans' that you use are what we in the U.K. might call 'kidney beans'? I would like to try making this as I'm curious as to how it can be a dessert! I don't want to make a mistake and maybe use the wrong beans though.
It is not. These beans are slightly smaller than kidney bean, and round. Also called Azuki beans.
@@TasteofAsianFood Ah, thank you so much for your help with this question!
Im here bc of one piece hahahaha
same xD
So much work this version having to pour out the soup then separately mesh the beans
So good that you'll rampage through a Prison Labor Camp after someone already ate it all!
