Whenever I go to the Korean grocery store, the woman asks me "how do you know what this is?" "What are you going to make with this?" And I tell her what recipe I'm trying to make and she tells me "I worry about you sometimes!" Or "wow even better than me!" Thank you maangchi for teaching me your ways =) you are the best.

Thank you maangchi for your videos. Especially for me. My mother left my sister and I to go back to korea when we were small. So even though our father tried his best, we didn't get that much korean food. We always had a jar of kimchi though lol. I grew up learning to cook the recipes of my hispanic father. now that I found you, I can now learn how to make korean food. You are so adorable and you make it look so easy! Now my daughter and can learn and cook together. Thank you again!

My family used to share food with our neighbors all the time when I was growing up. They would give us African food and we would give them soul food lol. We used to play with their son a lot so if the mom made food while we were there, she would hand us a spoon. It was interesting to me because sometimes she made communal dishes and we would eat together off of the same giant plate

Must. Make. I love love love sweet porridges like these with plain rice cake balls. Sometimes in the asian supermarkets, they sell packages of frozen ones that have filling like peanut paste or black sesame or red bean paste and my mom buys them all the time. She boils some water with some rock sugar (the taste is similar to light brown sugar, maple syrup and honey) and lots of ginger and adds in the balls. So so tasty. Definitely a sweet late night snack.

i love it when neighbors share food with each other. i live in nyc now, and this never happens, which i find sad (i've literally never seen the people who live in the apartment next to me, and i've lived in my building for almost 2 years... lol). i grew up in an big chinese neighborhood in the USA (i'm asian american) and every week when a family had cooked a lot and had leftovers they would bring it to the other families, and we would do the same. :) :) :)

Wow!.Like 'bubur kacang merah',a type of dessert in Malaysia. (Bubur means Porridge and Kacang Merah is red beans,so it is Red bean porridge in English).I really like that you put the sugar just before eating it,unlike the Malaysian style red bean porridge that adding sugar while it is still cooked and to make it fragrant,we add screwpine leaves (daun pandan)tied in knots!.Yummy!.And,in Malaysia..we can eat red bean porridge anytime if we want to!.

those rice flour balls remind me of what my mother used to put in a Filipino dessert made with coconut milk, various tropical fruits and some roots. so hearty and delicious, one of my fav desserts! I used to have an adorable elder couple of Cambodian neighbors that would share food with my mom and I. I never understood why exactly but their food was always so good I would have to cook them something in return. I would bake them cute little cakes and make tarts for them as thank you gifts because I didn't know what they liked and I couldn't make any cultured foods back then. I moved recently and they were very sad to see me go which made me happy but also very sad. Sometimes I am invited to their house for dinner or to go pick mushrooms or go fishing and I always make them a cake or a bunch of my cute little tarts~

This video reminds me of my grandma. Everytime during the winter season, she will make something similar to this. But, in our culture, it's called Tang Yuan. Basically it's rice balls with sweet soup. The rice balls are made of glutinous rice flour and we have traditional peanut, sesame seeds and red bean filling in them. The soup makes it tastier because its sweet with ginger and lemongrass. Hehehe now I'm craving for it :)

A couple of mods that worked for me:
    1. Soaking the red beans overnight in the fridge cut down cooking time.
    2. Using cold water instead of boiling water to form up the glutinous rice dough made less of a mess and all of the flour was incorporated, there was less wastage. I didn't detect any difference in the texture of the rice balls.

    Hello maangchi
Yes we share food (home made food)
Like majboos (lamb/chuckle with rice) or Arabic sweets ...etc
With our neighbors, families & dear friends... During Ramadan or holidays like eed al feter (the day right after Ramadan) or eed al adha (about one month after)
