- Rice is very important to Korean cuisine. It’s the center of pretty much every meal and in fact the Korean word for “cooked rice” (bap: 밥) can also mean “meal.” Most of the time Korean eat white rice or multigrain rice, but on special occasions we prepare rice mixed with red beans, called patbap.

I love watching your videos, Maangchi❤ .. you're super cute and lovely. I will cook the red bean rice next using your recipe. Sending thanks and well wishes from Singapore! ❤
Thanks a lot! Good luck with making patbap! Your message makes me think of red bean rice now! : )
There's a Korean grocery store opening up in my neighborhood and I'm so excited to buy ingredients to make more of my favorite Maangchi recipes!!! :)
yeah! heading to korean grocery store now!
You will have so much fun with a local Korean grocery! It's wonderful shopping and trying out all sorts of different things. There is an Assi Supermarket not far from me, and I treasure it.
Made this tonight. But cooked the beans for 60 minutes then put everything in the rice cooker. This came out perfect Maagchi! Served it with a shrimp, zucchini, and cabbage stir fry. The sauce had fish sauce, oyster sauce, gochugaru
, gochujang , and soy sauce. Was perfect with doenjang jjigae.
Awesome!
Simplemente , espectacular !!! 👏🏼 en nuestro país Costa Rica adoramos el arroz y los frijoles , es una receta maravillosa !!!
I'm actually eating southern red beans and rice as I'm typing this. I'm from Louisiana
mspatti similar bean flavor, different texture, but I'm only talking about the beans themselves as I never eaten either of those dishes,
Azuki beans are sort of nutty flavor. They are used a lot in sweet dishes. Like dango or mochi or dorayaki
I just had that too, haha.
Yum! Do you also add a little bit salt to the red bean rice?
I know where I am in the south I can get Azuki red beans at my local grocery. The closest asian grocery is about 3 hours away so it's one of the only things I can get consistently. I remember my Grandma cooking with them when I was young, we have a lot of dried beans as main dishes around here.
I just adore that little yellow pot. I want one, but it's a La Cruset and I know those are pricey!!! Maybe someday!
Thank you Maangchi! I never knew the official name of this rice dish, but always love it at the Korean Restaurants. I used to always ask, "Do you have that purple rice with beans?" Now I can make it myself, and also ask properly at the restaurants PAPBAP!!!! Red rice, not purple. haha
Ma'am I dnt know about that food taste but when u eat after cooked it Luks so delicious I also want to try it ..... U r too good ma'am 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Maangchi! My Name is Maria, I am from Brazil and love your videos. Saw them all during my vacation time
Hello Maangchi! I'm from Pakistan and even though we're also Asian, we cook rice differently! ^^ In my culture the rice should be fluffy and every individual rice should be seperated, not sticky. So how we make rice is we boil on medium high heat with the lid off, then when the water is bubbling and rice is 75% cooked, we drain the water and put the lid on. Then we cook on veeeerrrryyyy low heat until we can see steam coming from the edge of the pot. Then it's done! Nicely separated rice. :D
Just thought it'll be interesting to share with you~ I really like sticky rice, tho. :D
all menu is very very yummmmmmmmmmy
Maangchi, did you make this for Mardi Gras?
Red beans and rice are a very traditional New Orleans food, and it is Fat Tueday (the last day of Mardi Gras) today! Good Timing!

How do I cook the rice in the rice cooker? Because I can't turn my rice cooker to low or high.
I grew up in Trinidad and my mom got up early to fix our lunch kits. Even on school holidays when she had to work. By the time she woke us up at 5 or 6 am, lunch kit was packed, dinner was done and hot breakfast was being placed on the table. There are 3 of us kids (one is autistic), and she worked a corporate job. Lots of hard working moms out here.
😇💗 God bless your wonderful Mom!
Wow!!! Amazing mom!
So many wonderful side dishes pickles and spicy kimchi lucky red beans and rice. What a lucky family to have you in there lives.
I can already tell you're spoiled and entitled. She a mother not a maid.
tytytytyty how do you get spoiled and entitled from someone saying their mom was great . It’s normal for a mom to wake up and make her kids breakfast and lunch and look after them. She made them of course she will want to take care of them. Unless your mom was different.( don’t mean as an insult but I don’t know ,so sorry if it I offend you. ) Most kids even though their moms cook ,they help with chores .
Hey! I'm from El Salvador and we call red beans and rice "casamiento" -(marriage) how cool, a totally different country using the same base for a different recipe, truly cooking bring us all together :)
In India we make spicy red kidney beans and rice- rajma chawal
I was thinking the same thing

Love you maangchi mama ❤
Maangchi here in Dominican Republic we have a similar dish. we call it moro de habichuelas. it can be made with black or read beans and its delicious. i bet the korean version is good as well. greetings from Dominican Republic.
Ariel Baez I was just thinking that it looked like a Korean version of Moro
Your rice and beans is is this close to becoming a Jamaican dish...A few pieces of scallion, few springs of thyme, pimento, coconut milk, garlic and a little salt and you got Jamaican rice and peas....
Jamaican style patbap sounds very delicious!
Maangchi it is very delicious !
I had exactly the same thought, Princess Roxanna! Just swap the adzuki beans for pigeon peas...
Well yeah... every culture has their own recipe for rice so there is no need for cultural appropriation! Italians make rice, greeks too, then Persians , Portoricans , Indians and Serbians. All different!
Princess29 Leach so true since I am from that country
My mom would also get up super early to make us delicious breakfast. And we would get yummy dishes for our lunch box. This was every day. Korean moms are so amazing in how much they do for their families. I miss my mom so much 😭😭😭

welldone Maangchi! did u have any recipe making dwenjangjigae?
Maangchi can I cook Patbap in a rice cooker? Your recipe looks yummy
I recently went to a Korean grocery store near my house and it took all my self-control to not spend my entire paycheck there 😂
Laura Ortiz when I go to the Asian market I overspend but I am so happy, some one won’t get paid, lol ,lol,
Haha this is so true. Doesn’t help that some tend to be a bit overpriced
Hi Maangchi🙋♀️
Cooked this red bean rice today with fried corvina, bean sprouts and kimchi side dishes. Me and my husband liked it. Thank you from India.
Wow, this looks a lot like Puerto Rican-style rice and beans! The color is similar - except that we use annatto or tomato sauce instead of bean boiling water. It is also flavored with different spices since it's meant to be eaten as a big side to whatever protein you're serving.
Big fan from PR!
rosie6756 Omg YAASs !! I thought the same thing!!
One or two hours for a lunch box every morning sounds to me as if there is a huge pressure on korean moms.... o:
Well while I can say that pressure on parents here is big too (especially in regard to school performance) I must say that lunchboxes literally play no role in it at all. Just wondered. :)
In fact, at least from 21 century, school system has changed and almost every schools in korea have meal system instead of hrs of preparing lunchboxes ;) So not many moms do that these days because school feed your kids! (Except for sooneung day, the korean univ entrance exam)
Lived in Costa Rica for a year and saw similar structure there. Its something that Western civilization is breaking down for capitalism. We not only have lost the numerous benefits to children from a single focused parent, but also made our society so that those women who truly wish to devote themselves to family cannot afford to do so unless their husband happens to be a very highly paid worker.

MsChinBKMXMB99 I'm a European. I never had a microwave. Don't generalize my friend ;) German breakfast is really simple. Bread and cold cuts, cheese, and vegetables with some coffee. I normally don't eat breakfast in the early morning, more like a brunch at work ~
May I request a video for spicy Korean squid?? Ever since I had it at a Korean restaurant, I'm in love with it lol
knocknockify she has video about grilled spicy octopus
She already has a recipe. Look it up.
Bilbo Baggins Wonderful!!
That alarm gave me a heart attack;; Reminded me too much of my morning alarm clock.
This all looks so good though! I've never thought of adding cucumber to bean sprouts, that sounds really yummy.
haha, I'm sorry!

Thanks for sharing this recipe, Maangchi!
As you may know, here in Japan it’s called sekihan (赤飯) and I always loved it from the first time I tried it!
However, whenever I asked my friends to please teach me how to make it, they usually replied “I don’t know how to” or “it’s too bothersome and difficult, just buy the instant stuff”... so I’m very happy for this comprehensive recipe and video =D
You are like the Korean mom I always wanted lol. Love your videos and your personality.
kimjack1000 my mom isn't Korean so you can't compare
Thats simple rajma chawal man...prepared in every Indian household😄
Also, you dont need to boil it for that long...just soak red beans overnight and pressure cook them next morning..you will save your time
By the way, u explain too beautifully maangchi..lots of love😘😘
One of my viewers submitted Italian caption! Thank you so much!
It's pretty cool to see similarities in culinary cultures, even despite their geographical locations. That rice & beans end result is similar to many Caribbean dishes (had me thinking of Haiti, personally, lol)& other places. Great presentation & charmed to stumble across your page 🙃.
aliz (RUclips) submitted Hungarian caption! Thanks a lot, aliz!
