  • Rice is very important to Korean cuisine. It’s the center of pretty much every meal and in fact the Korean word for “cooked rice” (bap: 밥) can also mean “meal.” Most of the time Korean eat white rice or multigrain rice, but on special occasions we prepare rice mixed with red beans, called patbap.

    Made this tonight. But cooked the beans for 60 minutes then put everything in the rice cooker. This came out perfect Maagchi! Served it with a shrimp, zucchini, and cabbage stir fry. The sauce had fish sauce, oyster sauce, gochugaru
    , gochujang , and soy sauce. Was perfect with doenjang jjigae.

      Azuki beans are sort of nutty flavor. They are used a lot in sweet dishes. Like dango or mochi or dorayaki

      I know where I am in the south I can get Azuki red beans at my local grocery. The closest asian grocery is about 3 hours away so it's one of the only things I can get consistently. I remember my Grandma cooking with them when I was young, we have a lot of dried beans as main dishes around here.

    Hello Maangchi! I'm from Pakistan and even though we're also Asian, we cook rice differently! ^^ In my culture the rice should be fluffy and every individual rice should be seperated, not sticky. So how we make rice is we boil on medium high heat with the lid off, then when the water is bubbling and rice is 75% cooked, we drain the water and put the lid on. Then we cook on veeeerrrryyyy low heat until we can see steam coming from the edge of the pot. Then it's done! Nicely separated rice. :D
    Just thought it'll be interesting to share with you~ I really like sticky rice, tho. :D

    I grew up in Trinidad and my mom got up early to fix our lunch kits. Even on school holidays when she had to work. By the time she woke us up at 5 or 6 am, lunch kit was packed, dinner was done and hot breakfast was being placed on the table. There are 3 of us kids (one is autistic), and she worked a corporate job. Lots of hard working moms out here.

      tytytytyty how do you get spoiled and entitled from someone saying their mom was great . It’s normal for a mom to wake up and make her kids breakfast and lunch and look after them. She made them of course she will want to take care of them. Unless your mom was different.( don’t mean as an insult but I don’t know ,so sorry if it I offend you. ) Most kids even though their moms cook ,they help with chores .

    Wow, this looks a lot like Puerto Rican-style rice and beans! The color is similar - except that we use annatto or tomato sauce instead of bean boiling water. It is also flavored with different spices since it's meant to be eaten as a big side to whatever protein you're serving.
    Big fan from PR!

      @mewtje3095 7 лет назад +6

      Well while I can say that pressure on parents here is big too (especially in regard to school performance) I must say that lunchboxes literally play no role in it at all. Just wondered. :)

      In fact, at least from 21 century, school system has changed and almost every schools in korea have meal system instead of hrs of preparing lunchboxes ;) So not many moms do that these days because school feed your kids! (Except for sooneung day, the korean univ entrance exam)

      Lived in Costa Rica for a year and saw similar structure there. Its something that Western civilization is breaking down for capitalism. We not only have lost the numerous benefits to children from a single focused parent, but also made our society so that those women who truly wish to devote themselves to family cannot afford to do so unless their husband happens to be a very highly paid worker.

    Hi Maangchi, Hello from Philadelphia. I just have to say, you are great! I’ve grown up eating a variation of this dish…Jamaican rice and peas, made with kidney beans, creamed coconut and Scotch Bonnet peppers. I found your channel 2 weeks ago and have been addicted ever since! I can’t get enough and cannot wait to make some of your receipes!!

    What an interesting way to eat. The rice is the main dish, and the soup and meat are sides? That's pretty cool!

    In India, patbap is rajma chawal. Rajma is red beans and chawal is rice. It's my alltime favourite rice dish! Thank you Maangachi! Will definitely try them!
