I’ve survied poisoning by castor beans my parents brought home from a vacation, my liver started to fail, vomit, white poop, fever.. doctors was sure I was going to die when they found the cause, whole family gathered to say goodbye - somehow I came through 🤷🏻♂️
I once worked at a garden center where we had a couple huge castor bean plants in the raised beds out in front of the shop. One morning we came in and both 5’ tall castor bean plants had been dug up and taken. Needless to say, we reported that one to the police. They seemed to think it was unlikely someone took it to make poison, but idk.

I used to play with these seeds during my childhood. In my area these plant used to give seeds in summer. Crushing them gives an oily white paste. We childern used to take collect those seeds. The game i still remember is that two people take on seed each and try to crush the other. Didn't knew it was that deadly because sometimes we have crused them in our mouth.

I had a couple of geniuses in my class while I was in college. They were weighing castor beans in a biology class for an experiment on variation. The two of them decided to have a competition to see who could eat the most beans whole. The beans were also close to 20 years old, and had been stored alongside mercury. The two of them went up to the teacher at the end of the lesson to complain that they were feeling sick; after they admitted what they'd done, she had them rushed to hospital.

I also thought about extracting it at the school with my teacher and we had a whole plan how to do this. Edit: because some people are really stupid: no I didn’t planned to synthesize a biochemical poisonous Weapon like ricin… we build a plan with a teacher, with which we could theoretically do this. When I was a child, I was warned that castor seeds are poisonous. So I played with the seeds but never chewed it. But I knew that poor families in my village, who could not afford to buy cooking oil, would rub castor seed on woks to release the oil. If you are homeless from birth, It will be a lot stronger an tougher than newer homeless armors. Also, homeless people can spit toxic acid at their foes, burning off their flesh in self defense. Oh wow, wasn't expecting you to cover the assassination attempt on my dad Boris Korczak. If you want more details about that shooting just let me know and I'll tell you the hell that followed. He was shot with the pellet in Vienna Virginia at a Grocery store while I was next to him as we were picking out tangerines. What followed was pure hell that scarred me for life. Yes, Dad did survive but it was a harrowing and long recovery.

It wasn't unusual for Dad to be followed by the FBI so this trip to the grocery store was no different. A little beige car followed us and when we parked it disapeaed in the parking lot. My dad's friend noticed a man pushing a cart but not actually shopping as there was nothing in it and he was dressed unseasonably warmly for summer in Virginia summer. The rest played out as I said in my OP. We got home, I was watching cartoons while lying on the floor in front of the TV and suddenly Dad got terribly sick and all hell broke loose from there.
I've known about castor plants for rodent control since I was very young. My maternal Grandparents would plant them every so many feet in the rows of root/tuber vegetables to kill voles and moles because they would eat the roots of the castor plant on their way to the turnips, carrots, rutabagas, etc. The plants were kept pruned to encourage more root growth, and cut down on seed pods.
That's alright, I know of a deadly poison that is shockingly easy to get ahold of. It works on the brain, slowly eating away at the soft tissues until the victim becomes mentally retarded and eventually dies from a lethal overdose of hurt feelings. Here in Florida the castor bean plants are common weeds that grow very large, up to 10 feet or more. I've warned my friends about their toxicity and they found it shocking that a plant that is such a common sight is so deadly.
My dad had no idea that castor beans were poisonous so he ate a bunch like they were peanuts. He got really sick and couldn't walk but he survived with some basic care after a night at the hospital. (In Jamaica)

When I was a kid, we had Castor Bean plants - left by a former owner. My mother was weeding around them one day and beans were falling on the ground. Our stupid dog ate one of two of them and immediately threw them up. I knew they were toxic, but I had no idea how poisonous they were. The dog lived to an old age.
As a emergency physician I have come across cyanide poisoning once before. The person survived but they were severely disabled by it permanently. Hydroxocobalamin (antidote called cyanokit/very high dose B12) saved their life. But I’ve never seen ricin poisoning irl. There would be nothing we could do as you mentioned except supportive treatment/palliative care. It’s just always blown my mind how easy it is to acquire.
The B12 antidote for Cyanide is really interesting, the most common version used in supplements is cyanocobalamin, and basically hydroxocobalamin absorbs the cyanide to form cyanocobalamin, which your body just gets rid of as B vitamins are water soluble.
Hope you never do, ricin is a very swiftly acting and lethal poison that destroys cells from within by blocking protein synthesis. There is no antidote for ricin poisoning. One does not have to look far to find castor bean plants to get the beans that contain the toxin.
@@titaniusanglesmith9690 some people eat nuts that contain a small amount of a chemical containing cyinade. 2 or 3 nuts is fine but some people decide to binge eat whole bags like popcorn
If you plan on growing this plant yourself, I recommend cutting the flower stalks off soon after flowering or the pods, once dry, will cast beans all over the place, which quickly germinate. So they do have a tendency to become an invasive species in my area. It's an impressive plant, grows huge very quickly. But I got tired of dealing with seedlings popping up everywhere.
Once when I was a child I for some reason harvested a handful of these beans just because I tough they looked pretty. Then for some still unknown reason proceeded to mash them all into a paste with a rock. Just now, over a decade later, I realised how bloody close I came from meeting the maker, I'm shaking...
Probably not. Castor oil tastes absolutely disgusting, not to mention it gives you the shits from hell at much smaller doses than the lethal dose. Would you have had a bad time? Absolutely. Would you have died? Probably not.
I see these plants growing wild all around the roadside, especially near freeway overpasses. Someone once told me they were poisonous, but I never knew the name of the plant. Thank you for finally revealing what plant they are! Now I know my go-to if I'm ever feeling like I'm tired of living. So glad to know I can make my own "medicine."

So it’s not like calling the leaf of an apple tree the same as the apple, it would be like calling the apple and the apple seeds inside the same thing. Sure they’re different but they are both from the same collective thing.
@@anniebell6846 put it this way... there are more difficult entry level cake recipes.. its really like what at university we called "bucket and spade chemistry" like you can be pretty sloppy and rough with the amounts and methods and it should still work fine

When I was a kid my friends and I used castor beans from a plant growing on the edge of our elementary school's field as play currency. I remember opening the shells around the bean with my teeth once. I also remember biting into a bean, and panicking because I thought it might be poisonous so I washed out my mouth with water. So I guess I wasn't completely retarded.
That's what I am afraid of. I don't want my grandkids or my dogs to find these and decide to chew on them. I don't see how beans come from thorny looking plants though.
I remember the 2013 incident, where one part-rime karate instructor and Elvis impersonator tried to frame his rival karate instructor/Elvis impersonator. We played with Ricin a lot in our childhood, especially after finding it in fields and then removing shells and breaking it with fingers, but luckily no one died.

From watching the Netflix series Ozark I learned that apple seeds can be crushed and used to make poison for ingestion. I think peach pits can be used too. So many poisons around us!
Not likely as in reality people don't just end up on a watchlist. The amount of people who look up things kind of topics is so many that it would just be a waste of resources to monitor everyone so it usually boils down to if you were a suspect in a murder and then they find your researching by searching your computer. If you live in a country with free of information acts then you can always request your personal file if you really want to know
Never knew that it is poisonous. But it was once a common cultivation here in our place at Assam, India, to feed the silkworm. It is called "Endee" in our language and silkworm is called "Endee Emphou", worm that live on "Endee" and the cloth made of its thread is again called "Endee Si" cloth made by "Endee". One can esily guess how this plant was so much attached to us not as a poison but as a part of life :) .
I'm from the north eastern part of India in the state of Nagaland and it's basically the same here except we eat the worm as well (properly cooked of course) i also remember eating the seed of the plant during my early teens ending with a slight dizzyness and the taste was awful too..Never knew it was poisonous until now 😂

Such quality infotainment, and yes, you don't need to be too capable to extract ricin from Castor Bean Mash. It is a protein (actually a glycoprotein) which immediately provides those with the knowledge (and not too expensive equipment) the ability to effectively purify this.
I’m a plumber and I once did a job for an old sheriff. Not a deputy, but a sheriff. (The difference being the sheriff is an elected official and is the top dog of the whole county and a deputy is just one of his officers) He was well into his 80’s. He told me numerous crazy stories about how different the times were when he was a first voted in as sheriff in the 70’s. He spoke about things that he got away with and things he almost got caught for and different court cases he was able to help with for his friends around the county. Once I finished up we walked out to the front door and I asked him about this beautiful plant he had on the edge of his porch. He says- “oh you’d never imagine what that is. It’s a caster plant. You can pretty much boil it down and make ricin with it. I was given the plant in my early 20’s by a local fbi guy I used to drink with” I left there and my imagination didn’t stop running for a full week lol.
Used to play with this seeds when i was kid, keeping them as collection. Never knew it was poisonus. None even aware of that i guess, none ever told me to throw it away. People in the village use the leaf to prevent cold, steam the leaf and use it like a patch and put it on chest or tummy.
I actually have a very grim story related to this. In my city this plant is very very common, actually you can find it everywhere in the city and my family used to have one in the garden. It is a very beautiful plant in my opinion. But when i was a kid my cousin was trying to make a necklace out of seeds and he picked those ones (we had no idea it was poison) my cousin made orifices in the seeds by chewing them and he ended up in critical condition, gladly he recovered but damn he could have died.
I wasn’t aware that this lil seed was this powerful, we used to have them in our backyard and I was told that they are dangerous but nobody was ever aware of them being this poisonous.

As a young man I lived for a while in a shared house that had a castor bean plant. I was intrigued by the seeds (beans), and a strung a lot on a nylon line to make a necklace for my mother. She thought it was beautiful. It was many years later that I learned that these beans are poisonous. Luckily no harm was done.

Fun fact: In the whole entirety of Brazil, the Mamona plant (the plant of which the seed produces both ricin and castor oil) grows everywhere. Most people had their childhood playing "war" by throwing the seeds at each other, the seeds are protected by some kind of spikes and it hurts like hell. Look up "Semente de mamona" (Mamona's Seed). Another fun fact: In brazilian portuguese, "castor oil" is called "óleo de rícino" or "ricin oil".
Here in Germany we did the same thing but not with these plants we used "Kastanien" (chestnuts) and threw them at each other and the chestnuts have also a EXTREMLY spikey and PAINFUL shell but the fun part Was when the chestnuts shell busted open so we could make little figures out of the inside chestnuts
I guess I am one of those people who ate the beans. Growing up south in Mexico we use to play with the grease beans since plants grow as wild weed in certain areas and very easy to plant. We use the big leaves as umbrellas to protect us from the sun. As a child I never heard of anyone dying from eating the beans and I never remember pain discomfort when I ingested. It does taste disgustingly oily sour.
Castor bean was growing all over the place where I grew up, it was very common. I was never warned it was poisonous, but only told not to eat the beans because "they aren't edible" I can remember the neighbor's horse sticking his head over the fence and eating the leaves of it...I wonder if he ever ate the beans and survived? I know for a fact he ate the oleander leaves that he could reach, and he seemed to even like them. Maybe he was a defected Bulgarian draft horse seeking to build up his immunity in case the equine secret police came looking for him? All I know is "Rebel" was sure a cool ol' fella and was already pretty old when I had moved away at age 14, but seemed to be in remarkably good health. The other sad possibility I've considered is Rebel was trying to buy the big ticket out, coz I don't remember him ever being taken on the trail by my neighbors the whole 14 years I was living there. The poor guy spent all that time imprisoned alone in a corral run about 15' X 50' That would probably drive any living creature with a soul to engage in that kind of culinary roulette....
This is what got me into chemistry & biology. I found it fascinating and moved on to how it works on the boilogical/chemical scale and then other dangerous plants, then just other natural dangerous stuff, like nuclear energy.
There are good treatment options for ricin now - if you get some in you, and get to a hospital soon enough, and they identify the poisoning quickly, you'll very likely survive. Also, great episode as always, thanks :)
I think by appearance some would confused the castor seeds with the rubber tree seeds. The one I used to play with as a child in Indonesia was rubber tree seeds, it really looks almost the same but the poison in rubber tree seeds diminish by dipping it in water or hy boiling.
It's better than the taser. I think that's about 43% of the time it works 100%. That is, if the barbs get to your skin you're going to ride the lightning horse. If your cloths stop it, no go.
@@robertthomas5906 Weird comparison. If you want to silence a defector and he has a 17% chance of making it, you really might not get another shot at him. If a taser fails there's usually a backup officer ready to use lead to stop an attack.
@@eklhaft4531 That's another bad part of tasers that they really don't want to talk about. They're supposed to only use a taser where they normally would have used a gun. However, cops have degraded to the point they'll use it for fun to torture people. I've read of cases where a cop showed up as a medical call. Dude was having a diabetic episode and couldn't even get out of bed. Dumb cop shows up and starts ordering him around. Then tased him when he couldn't comply. Fire Dept showed up and said - WTF are you doing you idiot? Why are you even here? IMHO that cop should be doing serious time. Can you imagine calling for medical help and that happens? Sure, if it gets you just right it can kill you. It never seems to kill thugs, however. They make it back on the street quickly to hurt other people.
It is the meat on the inside that is the problem. Freshly harvested beans are more toxic than old seeds. You maybe didn't injest enough of the meat of the seed to hurt yourself.

I learned a great lesson today from your video. I would like to say thank you very much. I live in East Africa, Ethiopia. In my country literally, this plant is everywhere. As a kid, I have been playing with it as every kid does. Nobody knows this. I will try to teach the people I know. Thank you very much for this video again.
In our region of the world, South East of Nigeria, Castor Beans is a very important food condiment and my people have been eating it for centuries. We remove the shells, boil it for hours, ferment it for a week, then wrapped in dried leaves and stored in fridges or at fireplace. You can't imagine cooking bitter leaf soup without this condiment. It's strange to watch this video and learn that we've been toying with a potent poison. Well, we won't stop.
Here in America, we eat wild mushrooms that contain same structure as jet fuel and VERY deadly unless cooked out-but inhaling the fumes can be lethal as well. So, no worries. The cabbage family is incredibly toxic for a large number of creatures, and those are my favorite foods!🤣

I once worked at a garden center where we had a couple huge castor bean plants in the raised beds out in front of the shop. One morning we came in and both 5’ tall castor bean plants had been dug up and taken. Needless to say, we reported that one to the police. They seemed to think it was unlikely someone took it to make poison, but idk.
You would be surprised how often people steal plants. They are probably right. 100% suspect the person had no idea what you had.

I used to play with these seeds during my childhood. In my area these plant used to give seeds in summer. Crushing them gives an oily white paste. We childern used to take collect those seeds.

The two of them decided to have a competition to see who could eat the most beans whole. The beans were also close to 20 years old, and had been stored alongside mercury. The two of them went up to the teacher at the end of the lesson to complain that they were feeling sick; after they admitted what they'd done, she had them rushed to hospital.

When I was a child, I was warned that castor seeds are poisonous. So I played with the seeds but never chewed it. But I knew that poor families in my village, who could not afford to buy cooking oil, would rub castor seed on woks to release the oil. I never understood how they were not poisoned as they do that everyday. Thank you for your video and some search I finally found the answer. Ricin is destroyed at high temperature.

I've known about castor plants for rodent control since I was very young. My maternal Grandparents would plant them every so many feet in the rows of root/tuber vegetables to kill voles and moles because they would eat the roots of the castor plant on their way to the turnips, carrots, rutabagas, etc. The plants were kept pruned to encourage more root growth, and cut down on seed pods.

Here in Florida the castor bean plants are common weeds that grow very large, up to 10 feet or more. I've warned my friends about their toxicity and they found it shocking that a plant that is such a common sight is so deadly.

When I was a kid, we had Castor Bean plants - left by a former owner. My mother was weeding around them one day and beans were falling on the ground. Our stupid dog ate one of two of them and immediately threw them up. I knew they were toxic, but I had no idea how poisonous they were. The dog lived to an old age.

As a emergency physician I have come across cyanide poisoning once before. The person survived but they were severely disabled by it permanently. Hydroxocobalamin (antidote called cyanokit/very high dose B12) saved their life. But I’ve never seen ricin poisoning irl. There would be nothing we could do as you mentioned except supportive treatment/palliative care. It’s just always blown my mind how easy it is to acquire.

The B12 antidote for Cyanide is really interesting, the most common version used in supplements is cyanocobalamin, and basically hydroxocobalamin absorbs the cyanide to form cyanocobalamin, which your body just gets rid of as B vitamins are water soluble.
Hope you never do, ricin is a very swiftly acting and lethal poison that destroys cells from within by blocking protein synthesis. There is no antidote for ricin poisoning. One does not have to look far to find castor bean plants to get the beans that contain the toxin.

If you plan on growing this plant yourself, I recommend cutting the flower stalks off soon after flowering or the pods, once dry, will cast beans all over the place, which quickly germinate. So they do have a tendency to become an invasive species in my area. It's an impressive plant, grows huge very quickly. But I got tired of dealing with seedlings popping up everywhere.

My uncle is farmer and castor is major crop of the year. I never knew it can be used as deadly poison befor watching breaking bad.

I remember opening the shells around the bean with my teeth once. I also remember biting into a bean, and panicking because I thought it might be poisonous so I washed out my mouth with water. The amount of people who look up things kind of topics is so many that it would just be a waste of resources to monitor everyone so it usually boils down to if you were a suspect in a murder and then they find your researching by searching your computer. If you live in a country with free of information acts then you can always request your personal file if you really want to know

Never knew that it is poisonous. But it was once a common cultivation here in our place at Assam, India, to feed the silkworm. It is called "Endee" in our language and silkworm is called "Endee Emphou", worm that live on "Endee" and the cloth made of its thread is again called "Endee Si" cloth made by "Endee". One can esily guess how this plant was so much attached to us not as a poison but as a part of life :) .

I'm from the north eastern part of India in the state of Nagaland and it's basically the same here except we eat the worm as well (properly cooked of course) i also remember eating the seed of the plant during my early teens ending with a slight dizzyness and the taste was awful too..Never knew it was poisonous until now 😂

Such quality infotainment, and yes, you don't need to be too capable to extract ricin from Castor Bean Mash. It is a protein (actually a glycoprotein) which immediately provides those with the knowledge (and not too expensive equipment) the ability to effectively purify this.

I’m a plumber and I once did a job for an old sheriff. Not a deputy, but a sheriff. (The difference being the sheriff is an elected official and is the top dog of the whole county and a deputy is just one of his officers) He was well into his 80’s. He told me numerous crazy stories about how different the times were when he was a first voted in as sheriff in the 70’s. He spoke about things that he got away with and things he almost got caught for and different court cases he was able to help with for his friends around the county. Once I finished up we walked out to the front door and I asked him about this beautiful plant he had on the edge of his porch. He says-
“oh you’d never imagine what that is. It’s a caster plant. You can pretty much boil it down and make ricin with it. I was given the plant in my early 20’s by a local fbi guy I used to drink with” I left there and my imagination didn’t stop running for a full week lol.

Used to play with this seeds when i was kid, keeping them as collection. Never knew it was poisonus. None even aware of that i guess, none ever told me to throw it away. People in the village use the leaf to prevent cold, steam the leaf and use it like a patch and put it on chest or tummy.

I actually have a very grim story related to this. In my city this plant is very very common, actually you can find it everywhere in the city and my family used to have one in the garden. It is a very beautiful plant in my opinion. But when i was a kid my cousin was trying to make a necklace out of seeds and he picked those ones (we had no idea it was poison) my cousin made orifices in the seeds by chewing them and he ended up in critical condition, gladly he recovered but damn he could have died.

The poison is a protein and if it is exposed to high enough temperatures, it will denature making it inert. Don't ask me how I know this.
We used the oil,Caster Oil,get from this seeds for many generations and helped reduced body heat as well as a Laxative

As a young man I lived for a while in a shared house that had a castor bean plant. I was intrigued by the seeds (beans), and a strung a lot on a nylon line to make a necklace for my mother. She thought it was beautiful. It was many years later that I learned that these beans are poisonous. Luckily no harm was done.

I used to play with those seeds when I was a kid. I smashed them, sometimes I burned them. I'm quite sure I have even tried to eat them, to find out how it tastes. It grows everywhere over here. I have never heard of its poisonous nature.

Fun fact: In the whole entirety of Brazil, the Mamona plant (the plant of which the seed produces both ricin and castor oil) grows everywhere. Most people had their childhood playing "war" by throwing the seeds at each other, the seeds are protected by some kind of spikes and it hurts like hell. Look up "Semente de mamona" (Mamona's Seed).
Another fun fact: In brazilian portuguese, "castor oil" is called "óleo de rícino" or "ricin oil".

Here in Germany we did the same thing but not with these plants we used "Kastanien" (chestnuts) and threw them at each other and the chestnuts have also a EXTREMLY spikey and PAINFUL shell but the fun part Was when the chestnuts shell busted open so we could make little figures out of the inside chestnuts

I guess I am one of those people who ate the beans. Growing up south in Mexico we use to play with the grease beans since plants grow as wild weed in certain areas and very easy to plant. We use the big leaves as umbrellas to protect us from the sun. As a child I never heard of anyone dying from eating the beans and I never remember pain discomfort when I ingested. It does taste disgustingly oily sour.

Castor bean was growing all over the place where I grew up, it was very common. I was never warned it was poisonous, but only told not to eat the beans because "they aren't edible" I can remember the neighbor's horse sticking his head over the fence and eating the leaves of it...I wonder if he ever ate the beans and survived? I know for a fact he ate the oleander leaves that he could reach, and he seemed to even like them. Maybe he was a defected Bulgarian draft horse seeking to build up his immunity in case the equine secret police came looking for him? All I know is "Rebel" was sure a cool ol' fella and was already pretty old when I had moved away at age 14, but seemed to be in remarkably good health. The other sad possibility I've considered is Rebel was trying to buy the big ticket out, coz I don't remember him ever being taken on the trail by my neighbors the whole 14 years I was living there. The poor guy spent all that time imprisoned alone in a corral run about 15' X 50' That would probably drive any living creature with a soul to engage in that kind of culinary roulette....

I think by appearance some would confused the castor seeds with the rubber tree seeds. The one I used to play with as a child in Indonesia was rubber tree seeds, it really looks almost the same but the poison in rubber tree seeds diminish by dipping it in water or hy boiling.

It's better than the taser. I think that's about 43% of the time it works 100%. That is, if the barbs get to your skin you're going to ride the lightning horse. If your cloths stop it, no go.

However, cops have degraded to the point they'll use it for fun to torture people. I've read of cases where a cop showed up as a medical call. Dude was having a diabetic episode and couldn't even get out of bed. Dumb cop shows up and starts ordering him around. Then tased him when he couldn't comply. Fire Dept showed up and said - WTF are you doing you idiot? Why are you even here? IMHO that cop should be doing serious time. Can you imagine calling for medical help and that happens?
Sure, if it gets you just right it can kill you. It never seems to kill thugs, however. They make it back on the street quickly to hurt other people.

As a child we used to play with this. I never knew this was poisonous. A few times I chewed on it, just partly, to know how it tasted.
It is the meat on the inside that is the problem. Freshly harvested beans are more toxic than old seeds. You maybe didn't injest enough of the meat of the seed to hurt yourself.

In our region of the world, South East of Nigeria, Castor Beans is a very important food condiment and my people have been eating it for centuries.
We remove the shells, boil it for hours, ferment it for a week, then wrapped in dried leaves and stored in fridges or at fireplace.
You can't imagine cooking bitter leaf soup without this condiment.
It's strange to watch this video and learn that we've been toying with a potent poison.
